Resumen
This article extends an understanding of how the embodied nature of work, in this case nursing work, is reformed by workplace technologies. It outlines how technological advancements helped to partially restore the physical and psychological perforations inflicted on those performing nursing work. However, the transitions to remote nursing analysed here also undermined the prospects for future professional advancement. By analysing how technologies can disrupt embodied practices within the occupational field of nursing, the article provides both an empirical and a theoretical contribution to existing research on embodiment and work.

Resumen
The tele–intensive care unit (ICU) provides a remote monitoring system that adds an additional layer of support for critically ill patients. However, to optimize contributions, the bedside team must incorporate this resource into the patient’s plan of care. Using the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ Healthy Work Environment Standards as a platform, we can create and nurture a new partnership model. Strategies that embrace the standards of skilled communication, true collaboration, and effective decision making become mutual goals for improving patient safety and outcomes. Joint communication guidelines facilitate timely and meaningful communication. Trust and the desire to cooperate encourage provider engagement to strengthen collaboration. The use of tele-ICU technology can assist in the interpretation and transformation of data to affect decision making at all levels to influence patient care. Through the lens of the healthy work environment, the tele-ICU/ICU partnership provides enhanced opportunities for improved patient care and team satisfaction.

Requests for tele-medicine are rapidly growing. We are now used to being constantly connected to the internet via laptops, smartphones and, recently, tablet computers. The next step is to have access to work-related data, such as echocardiographic images. The continuous and rapid growth of echocardiography as the mainstream cardiac imaging modality (40 %), and the use of portable ultrasound devices, are stimulating this request for tele-echocardiography. With the diagnostic quality of the tablet computer screens, the future of tele-echocardiography looks bright.

Resumen
Background Families living with Alzheimer disease and related dementias have more access to support thanks to the development of effective telehealth-based programs. However, as technological science grows, so does the risk that these technology-based interventions will diverge from foundational protocols, diluting their efficacy. Strategies that ensure programs are delivered as intended, with fidelity to guiding protocols, are needed across the intervention spectrum—from development to wide-scale implementation. Few papers address fidelity in their technology-based work. Here, we present our translated telehealth intervention, Tele-STAR, with our fidelity findings. Objective This study aimed to assess the preliminary efficacy of Tele-STAR on reducing family caregiver burden and depression. Across the implementation phases, we assessed the fidelity of a caregiver education intervention, STAR-C, as it was translated into a telehealth option (Tele-STAR). Methods A total of 13 family caregivers consented to participate in an 8-week, videoconference-based intervention (Tele-STAR). Tele-STAR efficacy in reducing the affective burden of caregiving was assessed using pre- and postintervention paired t tests. Content experts assessed program fidelity by reviewing and rating Tele-STAR materials for adherence to the original STAR-C protocol. These experts assessed treatment fidelity by viewing videos of the intervention and rating adherence on a checklist. Results Tele-STAR reduced caregiver burden and retained good program and treatment fidelity to STAR-C. Conclusions We found Tele-STAR reduced caregiver burden and had good fidelity to the original protocol. Assessing fidelity is a complex process that requires incorporation of these procedures early in the research process. The technology used in this study facilitated the accrual of informative data about the fidelity of our translated intervention, Tele-STAR.

Resumen
Background: While quality health-care is considered a fundamental human right for all citizens; the challenge remains in making it accessible to all. Information systems have been identified as possible solution that can be used to alleviate disparity between rural and urban healthcare services and bridge the digital divide. Literature has suggested that one of the barriers for successful implementation of health information system is the user acceptance by health care personnel. The main objective of this study is to assess perceived usefulness, relative advantages of telemedicine technology among health personnel of selected district. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, using Semi-structured questionnaire. Data was collected from research participants from PHCs of Bijapur district, during July to November 2017.Results: In general the health-care personnel were aware of the benefit of tele-medicine to improve effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system. The barriers to the effective implementation of tele-medicine include lack of knowledge and lack of awareness regarding use and usage of the tele-medicine system. Conclusions: Health care personnel do acknowledge that tele-medicine can help to increase the effectiveness of the healthcare system. In general the acceptance of tele-medicine among healthcare personnel is positive. However in order to integrate it into standard work practices, specific training and capacity building for tele services is essential among health care personnel.

Resumen
Robot human-like behavior can enhance the performance of human–robot cooperation with prominently improved natural interaction. This also holds for redundant robots with an anthropomorphic kinematics. In this article, we translated human ability of managing redundancy to control a seven degrees of freedom anthropomorphic robot arm (LWR4+, KUKA, Germany) during tele-operated tasks. We implemented a nonlinear regression method—based on neural networks—between the human arm elbow swivel angle and the hand target pose to achieve an anthropomorphic arm posture during tele-operation tasks. The method was assessed in simulation and experiments were performed with virtual reality tracking tasks in a lab environment. The results showed that the robot achieves a human-like arm posture during tele-operation, and the subjects prefer to work with the biologically inspired robot. The proposed method can be applied in control of anthropomorphic robot manipulators for tele-operated collaborative tasks, such as in factories or in operating rooms.

Resumen
Health services in the United States and Europe have reported that tele-orthopaedics saves significant patient travel time, reduces time off work, increases satisfaction with care and in some scenarios reduces the cost of care. Less is known about the role of tele-orthopaedics in Australia. The aim of this study was to explore Australian-based tele-orthopaedic services, and to identify the barriers and enablers associated with these services. We used a qualitative case study methodology where specific services were identified from multiple sources and invited to participate in a structured interview. Nine tele-orthopaedic services contributed to the study. Telehealth activity in each service ranged from one to 75 patients per week, and service maturity ranged from three months to 10 years. Services were used predominantly for fracture clinics and peri-operative consultations. The majority (78%) of services used videoconferencing. Two services used asynchronous methods to review radiographs without direct patient involvement. Tele-orthopaedics was found to be disruptive as it required the redesign of many care processes. However, all services found the redesign feasible. Staff resistance was a commonly cited barrier. Further, imaging repositories from multiple imaging providers complicated access to information. Key enablers included clinical champions, picture archiving and communication systems, and the perceived benefit to patients who would avoid the need for travel. Whilst it appears that tele-orthopaedics is not widely utilised in Australia, recognition of the barriers and enablers is important for the development of similar services.

Resumen
BackgroundThere is a strong policy drive towards implementing alternatives to face-to-face consultations in general practice to improve access, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. These alternatives embrace novel technologies that are assumed to offer potential to improve care.AimTo explore the introduction of one online consultation system (Tele-Doc) and how it shapes working practices.Design and settingMixed methods case study in an inner-city general practice.MethodThe study was conducted through interviews with IT developers, clinicians, and administrative staff, and scrutiny of documents, websites, and demonstrator versions of Tele-Doc, followed by thematic analysis and discourse analysis.ResultsThree interrelated themes were identified: online consultation systems as innovation, managing the ‘messiness’ of general practice consultations, and redistribution of the work of general practice. These themes raise timely questions about what it means to consult in contemporary general practice. Uptake of Tele-Doc by patients was low. Much of the work of the consultation was redistributed to patients and administrators, sometimes causing misunderstandings. The ‘messiness’ of consultations was hard to eliminate. In-house training focused on the technical application rather than associated transformations to practice work that were not anticipated. GPs welcomed varied modes of consulting, but the aspiration of improved efficiency was not realised in practice.ConclusionTele-Doc offers a new kind of consultation that is still being worked out in practice. It may offer convenience for patients with discrete, single problems, and a welcome variation to GPs’ workload. Tele-Doc’s potential for addressing more complex problems and achieving efficiency is less clear, and its adoption may involve unforeseeable consequences.

Resumen
Rural and remote communities often have complex and diverse mental health needs and inadequate mental health services and infrastructure. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) provide an array of potentially innovative and cost-effective means for connecting rural and remote communities to specialist mental health practitioners, services, and supports, irrespective of physical location. However, despite this potential, a review of Australian and international literature reveals that ICT has not attained widespread uptake into social work practice or implementation in rural communities. This article reviews the social work literature on ICT, draws on research on tele-psychology and tele-education, and provides suggestions on how to enhance engagement with ICT by social workers to implement and provide mental health services and supports tailored to community values, needs, and preferences that are commensurate with the values of the social work profession.

Resumen
Social work competency reports are reports submitted by forensic social workers to criminal courts to assist the court in assessing the competence of the child witness in cases of child sexual abuse. The purpose of the research was to establish the views of magistrates and public prosecutors regarding social work competency reports submitted to criminal courts. A qualitative research approach was used to collect the data from the relevant court officers. The data collection instrument used was an interview guideline for conducting semi–structured interviews with the respondents selected by means of purposive sampling. The results indicated that the establishment of the competence of the child witness is important to magistrates and public prosecutors in court cases on child sexual abuse. Two aspects they considered important were whether the child could distinguish between the truth and lies, and fantasy and reality. The respondents in the research project were generally satisfied with competency reports submitted to the courts. It was recommended that forensic social workers establish the expectations of magistrates and public prosecutors in their areas regarding the content of competency reports.

Resumen
To work and live in the same place where ones employer also is the landlord, can create a situation with many special requirements for the individual. Constrains regarding time, space and impact on social life is likely to appear. Based on theory and empirical research about the Boundaryless work and the Psychological contract the purpose of this report is to examine employees who live and work at the same place. This is done by studying the regulation regarding time and space factors and the psychological contracts in expectations and in violation of the psychological contract and the risks associated with this like Locked-in factors. The study includes interviews with managers and employees (n=9). The result shows the difficulties to set standards for the constrains of the factors concerning time and space. The expectations from both employees and the organization goes beyond what can be considered as formal work boundaries. The results are discussed in relation to the risks of stress, health and Lock-in.

Toledano, O'Farrill Ruben. "Conceptions of effective information use and learning in a tele-health organization : a phenomenographic study of information literacy and knowledge management at work". Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/374.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research study investigates the concept of workplace information literacy (IL) theoretically and empirically, focusing on the connections between information literacy and knowledge management (KM). This dissertation examines the relevance and applicability of current IL frameworks in a workplace environment by means of a review of the literature, a review of NHS Scotland documentation on its KM initiatives, and a phenomenographic study undertaken with frontline staff at NHS24, a nurse-led, 24/7 service of NHS Scotland that provides over-the-phone consultation and health information. For that study, a working definition of IL as ‘effective information use’ was employed. The concept of information literacy has been developed mainly within librarianship, researched mainly within educational contexts and focused on individual competence in information use. While its application to workplace environments has been assumed, comparatively little research has been done into workplace situations. On the other hand, the concept of knowledge management is directed at a wider organizational level. However, while there is a clear focus in the KM literature on the value of information and its importance for organizations, little attention has been paid to the theoretical and empirical developments of Library and Information Science (LIS) relative to information behaviour and effective information use. The findings of this research identified limitations in the current IL frameworks, notably the lack of consideration for people’s exchanges of knowledge and information and of the social sense making that influences information interpretation and application. The findings endorse views of learning and information use grounded in socio-constructive perspectives and a consideration of context as situated practice. The conclusions suggest the need for more collaboration between studies of IL and information behaviour, and for LIS research to focus more on workplace studies and knowledge management.

Resumen
The past three decades have witnessed major changes to organizations and the work that is performed by their members, brought about in the main by technological changes and global competition. Terms such as lean production, manufacturing business process re-engineering, outsourcing, team-based working, kaizen, just-in-time production, empowerment, call centers, contingent workers, virtual teams, tele-work, and the learning organization are just some of the words that have entered the lingua franca of management, denoting ways in which organizations have attempted to respond to such changes. This article outlines a systems framework for describing the ways in which work activities are structured and coordinated by organizations in response to technological, economic, and social imperatives. In doing so, it is particularly mindful of the impact that evolving work configurations have upon an organization, its members, and the broader environment within which that organization operates.

AbstractThe congruence of sociometry theory and social work theories is covered in detail in this chapter. The social atom, cultural atom, and sociogram are described with visual depictions. Moreno’s theories of interpersonal connection, social networks, and society are depicted while introducing sociometry terms such as the sociodynamic effect, tele, and the organic unity of mankind. Sociometry’s connection to social work’s person-in-environment theories is emphasized while also considering the shared concern for how social forces impact individuals and groups.

Resumen
Intensive care units (ICUs) are highly complex organizations where lives are hanging by a thread. Approximately 400,000 to 500,000 people die each year in American ICUs. The highly complex environment and large responsibilities put a burden on ICU staff including physicians and nurses. Research has shown that ICU physicians and nurses report high levels of workload and burnout that are related to lower quality of care provided to ICU patients and patient safety problems. Furthermore, there is a shortage of ICU personnel. In the past decades, the number of critical care beds has increased while the number of hospitals offering critical care services has decreased. Telemedicine may be one solution to deal with the shortage of ICU personnel. The tele-ICU technology represents the application of telemedicine in ICUs: ICU patients are monitored remotely by physicians and nurses trained in critical care. Recent estimates show that a nurse in the tele-ICU environment can monitor as many as 50 ICU patients in different ICUs, using the most recent telemedicine technology that provides access to patient information as well as video and audio links to patient rooms. The physicians and nurses in the tele-ICU collaborate with the physicians and nurses in the ICUs in what can be considered virtual teams. We know little about how the virtual team characteristics affect communication and trust between the participating members of the team. Furthermore, we know little about how the technological environment of the tele-ICU may affect the physicians and nurses’ workload and possibly burnout, and how this may affect quality of care and patient safety. In this chapter we describe the ICU and tele-ICU from a sociotechnical perspective, and examine how organizational factors may affect the jobs of nurses in the tele-ICU, and possible consequences for quality of work life, quality of care and patient safety.

Resumen
The focus of this article is perception affects and enhancement during ground robotic tele-operation. Three independent factors were studied, namely scale perception, distance perception, and orientation awareness. Enhancements for each factor was proposed, implemented, and evaluated. The results show that under remote perception conditions, where the operator was separated from the environment where the navigation took place, both distance perception and scale perception were significantly impaired as compared with that obtained under direct perception conditions. In addition, for each of the proposed enhancements designed for each critical factor, the corresponding factor was significantly improved. The broader impacts of this work can be applied to various human-robot collaborated applications, such as urban search and rescue. Applying the proposed enhancements will allow the operators to have fewer failures through hallways, doorways, or maneuvering around obstacles, as well as allowing a more accurate understanding of the area's layout when a map is not available.

Resumen
On the Internet, a cyberspace is created where people communicate together, usually by using textual messages. Therefore, they cannot see each other in cyberspace. Whenever they communicate, it is desirable for them to see each other as if they were gathered at the same place. To achieve this, various kinds of concepts have been proposed, such as a collaborative environment, Tele-Immersion, and tele-presence (Sherman & Craig, 2003). In this article, HyperReality (HR) is introduced. HR is a communication paradigm between the real and the virtual (Terashima, 1995, 2002; Terashima & Tiffin, 2002; Terashima, Tiffin, & Ashworth, in press). The real means a real inhabitant, such as a real human or a real animal. The virtual means a virtual inhabitant, a virtual human, or a virtual animal. HR provides a communication environment where inhabitants, real or virtual, that are at different locations, meet and do cooperative work together as if they were gathered at the same place. HR can be developed based on virtual reality (VR) and telecommunications technologies.

Resumen
This paper considers the practice of a tele-echography through a new slave holder robot for a remote echographic diagnostic application. This robot is integrated in a master-slave system called ‘Robotic Platform for an Interactive Tele-echographic System’ (PROSIT ANR French national project). The proposed approach is based on motion capture of an expert’s gestures during the echography examination. The medical gestures were analyzed in terms of positions and velocities; the result has been used in the definition of the kinematics specifications of the proposed manipulator. The effective workspace size of a standard echography act, done by the medical expert, is determined through an experimental study. The evaluation of the workspace is based on the use of the Vicon Nexus motion capture system. The spherical parallel mechanism (SPM) has been selected because of its characteristics meeting the constraint requirements. In addition this architecture offers an excellent stiffness, high precision and is light weight. The design problem of a new parallel probe-holder robot according to the identified experimental workspace for the tele-echography system is presented. In this work, in order to increase the workspace volume of the manipulator, a minimal set of geometrical parameters of spherical parallel manipulators are optimized to find the maximum workspace. Seven independent design parameters have been identified. The optimal synthesis of spherical parallel manipulators is performed using a real-coded genetic algorithm (GA) based method. An optimal study of the orientation workspace is also presented.

Resumen
This paper analyzes the suitability of pneumatically driven, MRI-compatible vane actuators for stroke rehabilitation, particularly functional recovery of hemiparetic limbs. Hemiparesis patients suffer a sudden loss of motor skills in the upper-limb due to brain injury, such as stroke. As an emerging physio-therapy technique for hemiparesis, named repetitive facilitation exercise, or RFE, a therapist manually applies brief mechanical stimuli to the peripheral target muscles (e.g., tapping, stretching of tendon/muscle) followed by wrist pronation/supination immediately before a patient intends to produce a movement with the muscle. In an earlier study, a robotic system that replicates the mechanical tendon stimulation part of RFE procedure in MRI with the required timing precision has been developed and tested by the authors to investigate the underlying principles of functional recovery via RFE. This work presents the design of a vane actuator that fits into the tight space in MR-scanners, and analyzes its dynamic performance via a detailed pneumatic system model. The analysis indicates that a pneumatically driven, tele-operated vane actuator can satisfy the dynamic requirements of the targeted rehabilitation procedure.

Resumen
According to a recent report of ILO (International Labour Organization), more than two million people die or loose the working capability every year because of accidents or work-related diseases. A large portion of these accidents are related to the execution of motion and transportation tasks involving heavy duty machines. The insufficient degree of interaction between the human operator and the machine may be regarded as one of the major causes of this phenomenon. The main goal of the tele-operation system presented in this paper is to both preserving slave (machine) stability, by reducing the inputs of slave actuators when certain unsafe working conditions occur, and improving the level of interaction at master (operator) side. Different control schemes are proposed in the paper, including several combinations of master and slave control strategies. The effectiveness of the algorithms is analyzed by presenting some experimental results, based on the use of a two degrees-of-freedom force feedback input device (with one active actuator and one passive stiff joint) coupled with a simulator of a telescopic handler.

Resumen
In this work a novel command strategy is presented for tele-operating a mobile-manipulator system. To test its effectiveness, the command strategy was implemented on the mobile-manipulator system “Omnibot MMS”. The Omnibot MMS is teleoperated using a three degree-of-freedom haptic joystick and is controlled by driving either the base or the manipulator using an intuitive automatic mode switching command strategy. Virtual fixtures are used to provide additional information to the operator about the configuration of the Omnibot MMS, as well as increase accuracy and decrease errors. Through testing it was shown that new operators increased performance faster using the novel command strategy, and both accuracy and efficiency were improved, when compared to the traditional method of control using two joysticks.

Resumen
Tele-operation of mobile-manipulator systems (MMS) is typically done by modeling both the manipulator and mobile base as a single system combined with the use of various redundancy resolution techniques to achieve coordinated motion. In this work, the Omnibot MMS is controlled by a 3-DOF (degrees-of-freedom) haptic joystick. The base is a holonomic platform having 3-DOF supporting a 3-DOF manipulator capable of position control within its workspace. By controlling the base and manipulator individually, redundancy resolution techniques are not required because the master has equal DOF to the device it is controlling at any given time. Two command strategies are proposed herein for automatic switching of control between the manipulator and base. The first command strategy is a virtual wall method that uses haptic forces to make the operator feel like they are pushing against a wall at the edge of the manipulator’s workspace, resulting in the base moving. The second command strategy is a two state approach in which each state controls a different device and switching between the two is done by breaking through the workspace limits. With the help of haptic forces, the operator has the sensation of breaking through a compliant surface when switching states. The two proposed strategies were implemented and tested on the Omnibot MMS and both subjective and objective data was used to evaluate and compare the two methods.

Resumen
Abstract This paper presents a systematic design of high-fidelity tele-operated scaled vehicles to be used as a research and development platform for intelligent transportation technologies. Compared to computer simulation and full-scale physical tests, the use of high-fidelity scaled setups provides advantages on testing time and financial effectiveness. The physical design of the vehicles features a 1:14 scale with realistic appearance licensed by car manufacturers. Customized steering system and propulsion control provide high-fidelity maneuver characteristics. Remote control is deployed using a target-host structure over WiFi and can provide seamless switching between human driving and autonomous/assisted driving on the host side. Several possible solutions for real-time panoramic vision feedback are explored, with a tri-camera design based on parallel acquisition interfaces adopted. An adaptive color compression technique is developed to shorten the video streaming latency. A customized miniature LIDAR system is introduced to provide an ultra-small package for on-board installation. As a solution balancing between test fidelity and costs, the proposed scaled vehicles are especially suitable for validation tests during the early stage of research and development. With a long-term goal of developing a multi-vehicle traffic network test platform, ongoing and future work on the construction of scaled buildings and road systems is also discussed.
