Collaborative problem solving is one of a series of abilities that are needed in the 21st century in various aspects of life such as work, community, organization and even in the family. If it is not instilled early on, this ability will not be owned by a person given the flow of globalization and technological development, communication and information in many studies actually gives the effect of exlusivism, individualism and low social attitudes that make it difficult for them to collaborate in solving increasingly complex problems. Discourse on Collaborative Problem Solving in various aspects is needed. In addition to strengthening and developing science, studies on CPS are needed to further strengthen practitioners to implement them. Before proceeding further in the application and development of Collaborative Problem Solving skills, the meaning and aspects must be clearly known first.

Resumen
Whether dealing with social work, humanitarian assistance, solidarity or cooperation, the multilingual linguistic resources necessary for supporting social mediators within the domain of humanitarian work are significantly lacking. Institutional infrastructures which could be capable of fulfilling these needs end up being excessively rigid and sluggish in responding to the complex linguistic situations in which people in vulnerable circumstances find themselves immersed. As such, in times of need and of assistance following a natural disaster, or as a consequence of armed conflict or due to reasons of social injustice, the traditional, linear and hierarchical processes of terminology production prove inadequate when the tools critical for dealing with urgent situations must be provided. Unlike the methods typically used in industrial societies, the “network society” proposes new models of collaborative work patterned on virtual communities. This article takes as its premise that the hacker spirit, a key aspect of the “network society” (Castells 2011), is an exceptional point of reference around which new processes for terminology work can be developed. The goal of the article is to explore this terrain and show how these ideas have actually been implemented in practice through the creation of the collaborative platform Humanterm.

Résumé Depuis le début des années 70, le Canada montre un vif intérêt pour tout ce qui touche le traitement électronique du langage. Le projet TAUM MÉTÉO et la banque de terminologie TERMWM en sont d'excellents exemples. Le Secrétariat d'État se livre maintenant à l'essai, en milieu opérationnel, de deux outils de traduction haute technologie, soit du logiciel de TAO LOGOS et du poste de travail du traducteur (PTT). Les expériences menées jusqu'à ce jour ont donné lieu à diverses évaluations techniques ainsi qu'à des études linguistiques et ergonomiques, notamment à l'établissement d'une typologie des textes pouvant se prêter au traitement machine. Le Secrétariat d'État travaille dorénavant en étroite collaboration avec la société Logos et avec le centre de recherche responsable de la conception du PTT afin d'améliorer les prototypes à la lumière des besoins et des recommandations des traducteurs. Outre les deux grands projets-pilotes susmentionnés, le Secrétariat d'État vient également de doter l'ensemble de ses 800 traducteurs de micro-ordinateurs haut de gamme et il procède actuellement à la création d'une trousse d'ouvrages électroniques. De plus, il collabore à la mise au point d'une station de travail pour terminologue appelée LATTER (L'ATelier du TERminologue), dont le premier prototype sera mis à l'essai à l'été 1992. Toutes ces entreprises tendent vers un but à long terme, soit l'intégration en un seul et même système des meilleures aides à la traduction disponibles sur le marché. C'est ainsi que le traducteur de demain pourra, de son poste de travail, communiquer directement avec son client, consulter toutes les sources de documentation et les bases de données terminologiques électroniques nécessaires, confier la traduction de certains passages à un logiciel de traduction et, le cas échéant, procéder à l'éditique de son texte. Les possibilités sont immenses dans le domaine du traitement des langues naturelles, et le Secrétariat d'État du Canada déploie des efforts soutenus afin de demeurer à la tête du peloton.

This paper discusses a semantic web architecture for formation of an extended project team manufacturing system engineering moderator (EEMSEM) which includes four major modules: ontology acquisition, ontology mapping, knowledge acquisition, and design moderation. This collaborative system architecture focuses on how to support information autonomy that allows individual enterprises to keep their own preferred terminology or languages rather than requiring them to adopt a single standardized vocabulary. Different engineering information terminologies are interpreted and automatically connected to the corresponding terminologies through mapping into the mediated ontology model. A case study is provided to demonstrate how the EEMSEM applies its ontology during the moderation of an extended enterprise, supply chain focused project.

Purpose – This paper aims to collect the terminologies from the Ministry of National Defense military dictionary and to design a military-based wiki system, TMTpedia, to serve as a collaborative and sharing platform for military personnel. Design/methodology/approach – The development of the system is based on a prototype design and case illustration. The framework of the Taiwan Military Terminology Wikipedia system (TMTpedia) consists of three major subsystems, namely, Military Terminology Dictionary Processing, Military Article Contents Extension and Military Article and Resource Recommendation. This paper applies the engines of MediaWiki to design the proposed TMTpedia, and embedded different functions into a variety of system modules are developed by using such tools as C#, Java and SQL Server. Findings – In this demonstration, the focus is on the topics of “Communications, Electronics and Information Operations” that are illustrative of cases that reveal the results of the TMTpedia system. Originality/value – The main contributions of this paper are to transform military terminologies from a traditional dictionary into Wiki-based platform that can provide a reference framework for knowledge collaboration, to extend the content on the TMTpedia system from an external knowledge encyclopedia to an extensible mechanism that can renew military concepts for the accuracy of knowledge sharing and transformation and to implement a recommendation model into the TMTpedia system that dynamically provides relevant military information from external resources to enhance the effectiveness of knowledge acquisition.

Creative collaborative learning (CCL) is attempted in a classroom environment for studying macroeconomics for a global economy where the frontier of models and theories are often shaped by decision makers in global and national institutions. The methodology is suitable for student-centered learning MBA students who must put themselves through realistic situations, asking right questions, and making decisions. Traditional top-down methodology of emphasizing model building and mathematical proofs in studying macroeconomics are not suitable at the MBA level. The proposed CCL model in this study entails the joint efforts of three groups of players—the professionals, the students, and the instructor. Constructive knowledge is acquired not by drill and memorization of definitions, but by learning from the contexts in which terminologies are pragmatically applied, utilizing critical thinking. Students in an MBA class were asked to form country-focus teams, identifying country macroeconomic indicators as well as specific issues affecting infrastructure and performance of a country. Specific video clips were searched and reviewed in C-span video library. This search and review exercise were analyzed by evaluating their effectiveness in motivating interests, learning of abstract terminologies, professional manner and articulation method, and recognizing the role of important institutions through the speaking professionals. Our research shows that if students hear a terminology from a professional in a particular field, they connect the term with an experience of listening to the person and also with a face of the person and with the institution where he/she is affiliated with. An abstract concept becomes easier, more pragmatic, and more fun to learn beyond memorization. On that dimension, our classroom experiment achieved good success. However, CCL demands evaluations for “in-the-moment” expressions and quotations that can “elevate thinking” in a student-centered learning environment. CCL is effective for some clips but not generally. Our research also looks into how design of learning activities can better achieve CCL. Abstract The need for international collaboration in rodent pathology has evolved since the 1970s and was initially driven by the new field of toxicologic pathology. First initiated by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer for rodents, it has evolved to include pathology of the major species (rats, mice, guinea pigs, nonhuman primates, pigs, dogs, fish, rabbits) used in medical research, safety assessment, and mouse pathology. The collaborative effort today is driven by the needs of the regulatory agencies in multiple countries, and by needs of research involving genetically engineered animals, for “basic” research and for more translational preclinical models of human disease. These efforts led to the establishment of an international rodent pathology nomenclature program. Since that time, multiple collaborations for standardization of laboratory animal pathology nomenclature and diagnostic criteria have been developed, and just a few are described herein. Recently, approaches to a nomenclature that is amenable to sophisticated computation have been made available and implemented for large-scale programs in functional genomics and aging. Most terminologies continue to evolve as the science of human and veterinary pathology continues to develop, but standardization and successful implementation remain critical for scientific communication now as ever in the history of veterinary nosology.

Le secteur langagier vit actuellement un changement de paradigme. De nouvelles pratiques collaboratives facilitent les échanges entre des gens de partout dans le monde. Bien que certaines de ces pratiques, par exemple la traduction collaborative, ont suscité l'intérêt de nombreux chercheurs, d'autres, comme la terminographie collaborative, sont peu connues. Quel est le spectre de la terminographie collaborative? En quoi la terminographie collaborative se distingue-t-elle de la terminographie classique? Quelles sont leurs forces et leurs faiblesses respectives? La présente thèse définit la terminographie collaborative, identifie ses caractéristiques et ses divers modes et formes et présente ses outils afin de permettre une compréhension approfondie du phénomène. Nous comparons la terminographie classique et la terminographie collaborative au moyen d'une étude de cas d'un modèle classique (TERMIUM Plus) et d’un modèle collaboratif (TermWiki) afin de relever les ressemblances et les différences entre elles. Puis nous illustrons leurs forces et leurs faiblesses respectives. Nous concluons que la terminographie classique et la terminographie collaborative diffèrent principalement au niveau des participants, du style d'interaction et de l'infrastructure. The language industry is experiencing a paradigm shift. New collaborative practices facilitate exchanges between people from all around the world. Although some of these practices, such as collaborative translation, have attracted the interest of many researchers, others, such as collaborative terminography, are little known. What is the spectrum of collaborative terminography? How do collaborative terminography and traditional terminography differ? What are their respective strengths and weaknesses? This thesis defines collaborative terminography, identifies its characteristics and its various modes and forms, and presents collaborative tools to enable a thorough understanding of the phenomenon. We compare traditional and collaborative terminography through a case study of a traditional model (TERMIUM Plus) and a collaborative model (TermWiki) to identify similarities and differences between them. We then list their respective strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that traditional terminography and collaborative terminography differ mainly in terms of participants, interaction styles and infrastructure.

Natural raw materials are consumed at a rapid rate due to the ever-growing population and the endless pursuance of higher living standard of human kind, which alerts the manufacturing industry that resource crisis would come soon if no proactive actions are taken. Rapid manufacturing and consuming of products also brings about the serious environmental problems, e.g. over mining leads to surface water and groundwater pollution, energy consumption emits huge greenhouse gases, countless solid wastes threats human’s health and the sustainable use of land. Manufacturing industry is faced with the dilemma of either to keep the economic growth to meet the increasing society demand by immolating the earth and eco-system, or to save the earth by sacrificing economic growth. However, besides those two alternatives, we could rethink about developing innovative sustainable manufacturing strategies to find the balance point of environmental, economic and social sustainability. In this thesis, Multiple Lifecycle Product (MLP) is put forward as a solution towards sustainable manufacturing. It aims to shift the current open loop manufacturing model i.e. “take-make-dispose” to a seamless closed loop manufacturing model, which enables a product to have multiple lifecycles for maximizing the utilization of raw material, minimizing the consumption of energy and recapture the utmost value-added i.e. inputs in terms of labor, plant, equipment, etc. Resource Conservative Manufacturing (ResCoM) is such a closed loop manufacturing system developedbased on MLP concept, which implements MLP through a series of meticulous and collaborative works of product design, business model, closed loop supply chain and remanufacturing. Numberless information will be generated from the collaborative work during the implementation of MLP, and in each lifecycle of a MLP a wide range of product-related information has to be archived properly. Therefore, this research work starts to develop a new PLM for MLP, also called ResCoM PLM which will be one of the most powerful support tools for information management and decision-making of MLP manufacturing. As the beginning of ResCoM PLM research, this thesis targets to create a framework and foundation of ResCoM PLM research. Concepts and terminologies in the area of PLM for MLP are established systematically, and the ambiguous or overlapped concepts and terms presented in the state-of-the-art will be compared and explained. IDEF0 information model of MLP is createdby investigating the essential activities of implementing MLP, i.e. product design, business design, closed loop supply chain management and remanufacturing/manufacturing. Through elaborating the mutual interdependence, interactions, feedback and causalities among the essential activities and revealing the information and material flows of MLP manufacturing helps the readers to have deep understanding of MLP manufacturing and identify the issues of ResCoM PLM research.

Em uma de suas definções, a Terminologia representa o conjunto de princípios e métodos adotados no processo de gestão e criação de produtos terminológicos, tais como glossários e dicionários de termos. A sistematização desses métodos envolve a aplicação de ferramentas computacionais específicas e compatíveis com as tarefas terminológicas, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento desses produtos e a difusão de conhecimento especializado. Entretanto, principalmente no Brasil, a combinação da Terminologia e Informática é incipiente, e dentre as atividades do trabalho terminológico é comum a utilização de várias ferramentas não especializados para esse fim. Isso torna o trabalho dos terminólogos muito moroso, pois esse trabalho geralmente é feito por uma equipe multidisciplinar que deve ter acesso, a todo o momento, à versão mais atual das várias etapas da geração de um produto terminológico. Além disso, deixa o gerenciamento dos dados mais complicado, pois não existe um padrão de entrada e saída definido para os programas. Apoiado nos pressupostos da Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia (TCT), este trabalho apresenta a proposta de desenvolvimento e avaliação do e- Termos, um Ambiente ColaborativoWeb composto por seis módulos de trabalho bem definidos, cujo propósito é automatizar as tarefas de gestão e criação de produtos terminológicos. Cada módulo do e-Termos possui a responsabilidade de abrigar tarefas inerentes ao processo de criação das terminologias, sendo atreladas a eles diferentes ferramentas de apoio lingüístico, que possuem a função de dar suporte às atividades de Processamento de Língua Natural envolvidas nesse processo. Além delas, há também ferramentas colaborativas, designadas para dar apoio às necessidades comunicacionais e de interação da equipe de trabalho. Particularmente com relação ao processo de avaliação proposto, uma de suas características é a capacidade de ser executado em um tempo curto, viabilizando a avaliação controlada de vários grupos, mas executada no ambiente de trabalho do público alvo. As principais contribuições desta pesquisa são o aspecto colaborativo instanciado na prática terminológica, a criação flexível da Ficha Terminológica, a possibilidade didática de uso para o ensino de terminologia, lexicografia e tradução e o processo de avaliação para sistemas colaborativos desenvolvido para o e-Termos, que combina Cenários de Uso e um Questionário de Pesquisa. Utilizando tecnologias Web e da área de Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) para o desenvolvimento da sua arquitetura computacional colaborativa, o e-Termos apresenta-se como um ambiente inovador para a pesquisa terminolóogica assistida por computador, pois automatiza um método prático que exp~oe os postulados da terminologia de orientação descritiva e evidencia todas as etapas do processo de criação de produtos terminológicos com o inédito diferencial colaborativo. Para certificar este êxito, o e-Termos tem recebido um número crescente de novas propostas de projeto, tendo até Agosto de 2009 mais de 130 usuários cadastrados, alocados em 68 diferentes projetos terminológicos
In one of its definitions, Terminology represents the set of principles and methods adopted in the creation and management of terminological products as glossaries and dictionaries of terms. A systematization of these methods includes the application of specific computational tools, compatible with terminological tasks, which contribute to developing such products and disseminating expert knowledge. However, especially in Brazil, the combination of Terminology and Computer Science is still incipient, and to perform the tasks of a terminological work it is typical to employ several nonspecialized tools, which make terminologists\' work very time-consuming, since it is usually carried out by a multidisciplinary team that should have access, all the time, to the latest versions of the various stages of the generation of a terminological product. Moreover, it makes data management more complex, because there is no input/output standard defined for programs. Based on the presuppositions of the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT), this thesis proposes the development and evaluation of e-Termos, a Web Collaborative Environment composed of six well-defined working modules, whose purpose is to automatize tasks for creating and managing terminological products. Each module in e- Termos is responsible for tasks inherent to the process of creating terminologies. Linked to these modules, there are different linguistic support tools that assist the Natural Language Processing activities included in the process. Besides them, there are also collaborative tools for supporting the communication and interaction needs of team members. As far as the proposed evaluation process is concerned, one of its features is that it can be run in a short time, making viable a controlled evaluation of several groups that is, however, run in the work environment of the target audience. The main contributions of this research are the collaborative aspect instantiated in terminological practice, the exible creation of Terminological Records, the possibility of being used for teaching terminology, lexicography and translation, and the evaluation of collaborative systems developed for e-Termos, which combines Scenario-based Evaluations and Surveys. Using Web technologies and Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) to develop its collaborative computational architecture, e-Termos is an innovative environment for computer-assisted terminological research, since it automatizes a useful method that represents the postulates of descriptive terminology and highlights all stages of the process of creating terminological products with the unprecedented collaborative differential. Confirming its success, e-Termos has been receiving a growing number of new project proposals, and in August 2009 has more than 130 registered users in 68 different terminological projects

Online collaborative translation has received increased attention from Translation Studies, mostly with a focus on explaining the various models it exhibits and the factors that shape these models. This study takes a new perspective on this phenomenon by focusing on its outcome through the lens of terminology. A terminometric analysis is carried out on the terminology used in the discussions of Francophone users on online forums of the Ubuntu-Québec open-source software community. The implantation of terms used in the forums and those stored in a selection of major term banks is examined with the objective of identifying potential correlations between term implantation and term formation patterns. The examination indicates that most terms formed through the use and modification of existing linguistic resources have higher implantation rates than terms formed through the creation of new lexical items. A new avenue of terminometric research is introduced by shifting the focus from the institution to the community, aligning with the global shift in content production and distribution. The study provides insight into online collaboration in the context of localization and points out correlations between term formation patterns and term implantation. These observations can mark a starting point for terminological decision-making that is informed by user behaviour and may thus improve the reception of localized content by adapting to users' terminological expectations.

Syftet med det här examensarbetet är att presentera process och erfarenheter från mitt konstnärliga musikproduktionsprojekt som genomförts under mitt sista år av min masterutbildning. Genomförandet har bestått av att skapa ett svenskt popmusikalbum där låtar har skapats enskilt, genom samarbeten och tre verk har blivit slutförda och distribuerats på streamingtjänster så som Spotify och YouTube. Vidare är syfte att presentera en modell med hjälp av mitt konstnärliga arbete där det prövas potentiella omformuleringar för yrkesroller inom låtskapande. Dessa termer ska i sin tur underlätta rolldefinition inom låtskapande och även ge utrymme för att förtydliga den ideella rätten som medverkande i ett konstnärligt verk har. Med utgångspunkt till att musikproducenten ofta hamnar i en multikompetent position så har jag valt att låna begrepp från systemutvecklarens yrkesvärld för att skapa modellen. Begreppen jag valt att låna består av back-end, front-end och full-stack och avsikten är att bryta upp paraplybegrepp såsom ”låtskrivare, producent och performer” och även kunna bidra till tydligare rekryteringsprocesser för samarbeten inom låtskapande.
The purpose of this master’s thesis is to present the process and experiences of my music production project that was carried out during the last year of my masters’ studies. The project’s creative content is a Swedish pop album which created through collaborative and independent work. Three single releases and one music video have been released and distributed through the course of the project on streaming platforms such as Spotify and YouTube. In addition to the making of the album I have chosen to create a model to use as a frame for potential recruitment instances of creative collaborations, improve role definition and develop a more accurate method to credit rights holder’s moral credentials as a contributor to an artistic work. The root cause of this model is that a music producer often finds themselves as a multicompetent keyperson in creative collaborations where the lines between different professions overlap. The model is inspired of the software developers job terminology and aims to break up umbrella concept roles such as “songwriter, producer and performer” to facilitate the recruiting process of creative collaborations within the crafting of songs. The terminologies inspired out of the software developer’s professions are back-end, front-end and full-stack.

Scrivere di Islam. Raccontare la diaspora (Writing About Islam. Narrating a Diaspora) is a meditation on our multireligious, multicultural, and multilingual reality. It is the result of a personal and collaborative exploration of the necessity to rethink national culture and identity in a more diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist way. The central part of this volume – both symbolically and physically – includes Shirin Ramzanali Fazel’s reflections on the discrimination of Muslims, and especially Muslim women, in Italy and the UK. Looking at school textbooks, newspapers, TV programs, and sharing her own personal experience, this section invites us to change the way Muslim immigrants are narrated in scholarly research and news reports. Most importantly, this section urges us to consider minorities not just as ‘topics’ of cultural analysis, but as audiences and cultural agents. Following Shirin’s invitation to question prevailing modes of representations of immigrants, the volume continues with a dialogue between the co-authors and discusses how collaboration can be a way to avoid reproducing a ‘colonial model’ of knowledge production, in which the white male scholar takes as object of analysis the work of an African female writer. The last chapter also asserts that immigration literature cannot be approached with the same expectations and questions readers would have when reading ‘canonised’ texts. A new critical terminology is needed in order to understand the innovative linguistic choices and narrative forms that immigrant writers have invented in order to describe a reality that has lacked representation or which has frequently been misrepresented, especially in the discourse around the contemporary Muslim diaspora.

The final chapter summarizes the benefits of clinician support for students and families who experience academic challenges and learning problems. A review of issues covered in this volume includes the definition of learning disability, challenges in understanding differences between school and external evaluations, differences in terminology, and the lack of congruence between parental expectations for schools and what schools may actually (and appropriately) offer. Recommendations for clinicians include the importance of obtaining a thorough academic history and consideration of school performance as a critical piece of the diagnostic and treatment picture. The impact of related disorders, such as ADHD and executive function deficits, is discussed. Clinicians are advised to become familiar with school-based legal requirements, evaluations, and identification procedures for the benefit of students and their parents.

However, most school-based clinicians (school psychologists, counselors, social workers) who are charged with addressing the special needs of these children have not had coursework or experience related to common pediatric conditions. This book is a practical guide for school-based clinicians working with children with chronic health conditions. Section I provides a broad overview of school-related issues for children with chronic health conditions. This includes a review of common medical conditions and terminology and cross-cutting issues related to social and emotional and academic functioning, as well as the role of the school-based professional in collaborating across systems of care. The section also reviews legal and policy issues and alternative educational settings for students with chronic health needs. Section II focuses on prevention, assessment, intervention, and consultation strategies for individual students and entire school systems. Finally, Section III addresses common groups of medical conditions. Each chapter provides an overview of the condition(s), common school-related concerns, risk and protective factors, and cultural considerations, as well as practical strategies, resources, and handouts for the school-based professional. It would eventually serve (to employ the terminology of Pierre Bourdieu) as a rite of consecration, or of legitimization, as the regime and collaboration slowly hardened. But Pelléas was not a monolithic emblem of French cultural pride, nor was its message or its physical instantiation immutable or unequivocal. Through its successive performances the chapter traces the evolution of the regime as well as its vision, conception, and uses of French culture. It also discerns the way in which the Resistance appropriated and used the work in its clandestine publications.

Evidence suggests that in the past support services for patients and family carers of terminally ill people have often been unavailable or inadequate in addressing their needs. This chapter will briefly summarize the context of hospice and palliative care services. The chapter argues that definitions of palliative care are culturally and temporally dependent, exemplified by the changing terminology used in the United Kingdom. One of the challenges facing service deliverers is the necessity to work collaboratively across health and social care services, and statutory and voluntary sector organizational boundaries. The funding and organizational positioning of hospice and palliative care services are often contingent upon health care systems and resources. All roles require careful recruitment, dedicated training, and consistent support to provide effective contributions from volunteers. The chapter ends by providing a short description of three studies investigating the role of volunteers undertaken in the United Kingdom.

An entire chapter on historical context and legal framework describes obligatory supports for students with learning disabilities in all settings. Chapters on preschool assessment and the transition to post–high-school college and career expand the scope of the book beyond the school years. Clinicians who work in nonschool settings view learning disorders through the lens of DSM-5. They may be surprised at IDEA requirements and how the law works to identify and serve students with learning disabilities. Clinicians may not be aware that DSM-5 is not familiar in the school setting and that their diagnoses and recommendations may not have their intended effect. Through detailed examination of relevant special education requirements and procedures, this text addresses and clarifies the confusion that clinicians and families often experience about the lack of diagnostic congruence and differing terminology between DSM-5 and IDEA. No other book describes learning disorders and the psychoeducational evaluation process for mental health clinicians who work with these children and adolescents. A chapter on referral and collaboration will inform clinicians who seek deeper educational knowledge about their clients to better guide students and their families.

AbstractAt the core of model-driven development (MDD) of collaborative embedded systems (CESs) are models that realize the different participating stakeholders’ views of the systems. For CESs, these views contain various models to represent requirements, logical functions, collaboration functions, and technical realizations. To enable automated processing, these models must conform to modeling languages. Domain-specific languages (DSLs) that leverage concepts and terminology established by the stakeholders are key to their success. The variety of domains in which CESs are applied has led to a magnitude of different DSLs. These are manually engineered, composed, and customized for different applications, a process which is costly and error-prone. We present an approach for engineering independent language components and composing these using systematic composition operators. To support structured reuse of language components, we further present a methodology for building up product lines of such language components. This fosters engineering of collaborative embedded systems with modeling techniques tailored to each application.

AbstractMany cities around the world have adopted climate neutrality targets, and, to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, they need climate action plans. Energy system optimization models (ESOMs) can be used as tools to support their energy transitions. ESOMs have been in use at the national level for several years and also have recently been used at the city level. Even though several researchers have focused on how city ESOMs can be developed, the literature lacks a discussion of the challenges that are faced in data collection during model development. In this paper, we share the challenges encountered in the model development, as well as in the scenario development and recommend practical solutions for overcoming these challenges. The following three challenges were identified and discussed in the model development process: (a) data availability and quality; (b) communication; and (c) knowledge and background of civil servants and researchers. The main challenges in the scenario development were: (a) parameter selection and (b) complexity. It was found that explanation of the terminology used in ESOMs, presentation of the model structure and preliminary base-year results were crucial actions for overcoming challenges during model development. During the scenario development, collaboration between modelers and civil servants when reviewing parameter combinations and working with preliminary scenario results were decisive strategies for improving the civil servants’ understanding of ESOMs. Complementarily, it was found that continuous communication between the researcher and the civil servant and good comprehension of the model on the municipality's side helped improve the usefulness of ESOMs in cities’ energy transitions.

Semantic interoperability is a major challenge in multi-center data sharing projects, a challenge that the German Initiative for Medical Informatics is taking up. With respect to laboratory data, enriching site-specific tests and measurements with LOINC codes appears to be a crucial step in supporting cross-institutional research. However, this effort is very time-consuming, as it requires expert knowledge of local site specifics. To ease this process, we developed a generic manual collaborative terminology mapping tool, the MIRACUM Mapper. It allows the creation of arbitrary mapping workflows involving different user roles. A mapping workflow with two user roles has been implemented at University Hospital Erlangen to support the local LOINC mapping. Additionally, the MIRACUM LabVisualizeR provides summary statistics and visualizations of analyte data. We developed a toolbox that facilitates the collaborative creation of mappings and streamlines the review as well as the validation process. The two tools are available under an open source license.

The Executable Models (ExM) research area is an ascending discipline that explores the use of models capable of being executed during the software development process. The research area is overloaded with terms and concepts derived from several areas. There is also ambiguities and an absence of consensus on definitions. This is a problem not only for newcomers in the area but it can generate unproductive studies and conflicts among researchers. However, there is not yet a study presenting those concepts in a concise and structured manner. Thus, this study aims to collaborate with the research area with a collection of relevant concepts and their definitions. The concepts were obtained from a literature review where we collected relevant studies from several disciplines. We organized those concepts into a concept map that establishes the relationship between concepts while presenting them separated by disciplines.

Standards cannot satisfy the information sharing needs of collaborators, because these needs cannot be standardized. This paper discusses the design and use of a shared representation of knowledge (language and vocabulary) to facilitate communication among specialists and their tools. The paper advances the opinion that collaborators need the ability to establish and customize knowledge sharing agreements (i.e. mutually agreed upon terminology and definitions) that are usable by people and their machines. The paper describes a formal approach to representing engineering knowledge, describes its role in a computational framework that integrates a heterogeneous mix of software tools, and discusses its relationship to current and emerging data exchange standards. Abstract A current research project at the University of Strathclyde is introduced which aims to better understand the role of distributed engineering design in industry and address present problems. The first major industrial case study of the project, completed within a multinational in the oil and gas industry, is then described together with the main research questions. This multinational will be described in the text as company A. The findings are split into three areas depending on the data collection method employed. The main case study issues are investigated through interviews while a profile of current activities and perceptions comes from completed questionnaires. Sampling and analysis of distributed activity over time is served by the completion of daily diaries and direct observation. These combine to increase the understanding of information sharing and collaborative design in a distributed organization. Interviews show the importance of design reuse within the organization contrasting with the pressures of formalizing all parts of a design project. The preponderance of variant design activity is also highlighted along with concerns of continued practice. The questionnaires show that 34% of engineers’ time is spent sourcing relevant information and knowledge and that the most popular sources are company systems followed by personal contact. 18% of work is found to be distributed while colleagues from another location and another floor/department know more 51% and 57% of the time respectively. The detail design phase of a distributed design project is analysed over time which finds that most collaborative work consists of simple information exchange supplementary to the main design activity. Furthermore, concentrated periods of collaborative design are found to follow these information exchange cycles’. Distributed problems are also discussed in the paper, ranging from difficulties with unfamiliar terminology to a lack of visibility at worldwide sites.

The Collaborative Research Center 666 (CRC666) is concentrated on the research of methods and procedures for the optimized illustration of branched structures in integral sheet metal construction by regarding their functions and strains [1]. The virtual development of such branched structures emphasizes the found methods and procedures with regard to make them based on algorithms. This paper describes several approaches, which help to identify customer requirements based on algorithms. A standardized structure for the requirements is developed that builds the basis for a system of requirement terms. Product requirements can have relations among themselves. To make these relations directly and automatically available for the stakeholders during the identification process a semantic product requirement network was developed. This network helps the stakeholders to clearly identify and handle the requirements. This semantic product requirement network is based on the graph theory. A mathematical model for the access to the graph nodes (requirement) is introduced in the system for requirement terms that helps with the identification of requirements by using algorithms. Today requirements for a product are also collected in the form of a continuous text. For this case an approach is shows how requirements can be extracted from the continuous text by using linguistic procedures within the semantic product requirement network.

Abstract Over the past 50 years, researchers have repeatedly proposed the establishment of a new interdisciplinary engineering field in Engineering for Global Development (EGD), whose analytical tools and design processes result in positive social impacts and poverty alleviation in a global development context. Within each discipline and research area, a growing body of work has sought to systematically create scientific knowledge in this area. However, a recent network analysis of Human-Centered Design plus Development research indicates that sub-communities are not collaborating at a high level and therefore the overall research agenda may lack cohesion. This paper presents a descriptive analysis of EGD research within mechanical engineering along four dimensions through a systematic literature review and secondary data analysis. Results from the review and a Latent Dirichlet Allocation model indicate EGD work in mechanical engineering draws upon research methodologies from a number of other fields and has low levels of consensus on technical terminology. These results suggest consensus in the broader interdisciplinary EGD field should be examined.

With the increasing heterogeneity and on-node parallelism of high-performance computing hardware, a major challenge to computational physicists is to work in close collaboration with computer scientists to develop portable and efficient algorithms and software. The objective of our work is to implement a portable code to perform interface reconstruction using NVIDIA’s Thrust library. Interface reconstruction is a technique commonly used in volume tracking methods for simulations of interfacial flows. For that, we have designed a two-dimensional mesh data structure that is easily mapped to the 1D vectors used by Thrust and at the same time is simple to work with using familiar data structures terminology (such as cell, vertices and edges). With this new data structure in place, we have implemented a recursive volume-of-fluid initialization algorithm and a standard piecewise interface reconstruction algorithm. Our interface reconstruction algorithm makes use of a table look-up to easily identify all intersection cases, as this design is efficient on parallel architectures such as GPUs. Finally, we report performance results which show that a single implementation of these algorithms can be compiled to multiple backends (specifically, multi-core CPUs, NVIDIA GPUs, and Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors), making efficient use of the available parallelism on each.

BIM uses are complex specific processes in architecture, engineering, construction, and operation mediated by Building Information Modeling technologies. Several initiatives are dedicated to detailing these uses in a standardized way, enumerating and describing them in terms of scope, benefits, process maps, required competencies, associated technology, and theoretical framework. Examples of these efforts are Penn State's Computer Integrated Construction Research Program (MESSNER et al., 2019), buildingSMART (2021), and BIM Excellence Organization (SUCCAR; SALEEB; SHER, 2016). This study presents the approach to educate, evaluate and assist Model Uses using templates (Model Use Templates - MUT) of the BIM Excellence Initiative (BIMe). The BIM use is called Model Use in BIMe terminology. In three years, starting in 2021, the initiative intends to detail all the domain model uses listed by the organization (BIMe, 2020). The domain model uses are organized in the series of capture and representation, planning and design, simulation and quantification, operation and maintenance, monitoring and control of buildings and infrastructures. In terms of domain model uses, there is the linking and extending series of BIM integrated to Facility Management, interfaced with the Internet of Things, linked to Enterprise Resource Planning, etc. The initiative developed a Construction Domain Model Use Template (MUT) and applied it as a demonstration for Clash Detection or MUT 4040. This summary will describe the template, its application to Clash Detection, and guidance on how to transform it into a template class to teach Clash Detection with BIM. The MUT consists of an extended description, software list, activity flow, and bibliography. This content is available in the BIM Dictionary associated with the equivalent term (https://bimdictionary.com/en/clash-detection/1). The extended description includes the corresponding term's definition, the detailed description, purpose, and an available online media-list. The detailed description presents the different types of use (e.g., hard, soft, time-based) and benefits. The software list lists platforms and environments used in the model use development. For each platform or environment, there is a list of the vendor or developer, the corresponding technical functionality, the applicable discipline, the software description, the availability of the software in the cloud or location, differentiation of versions, the link to the official website, the model use code that the software can support, specific functionalities associated with the use and availability of a plugin or extension. The activity flow is described using a process map and details in up to 3 hierarchical levels for each macro activity. All the terminology adopted in the MUT is semantically aligned to the various projects and initiatives of BIM Excellence, bringing consistency to the meaning. In the case of MUT 4040, that is, the application of the template for the model use of Clash Detection, the short description is a “Use of the Model representing the use of 3D Models to coordinate different disciplines (e.g., structures and air-conditioning) and to identify/resolve possible conflicts between virtual elements prior to actual construction or fabrication”. The extended description presents the Clash Detection as automated or semi-automated procedures to identify design errors in 3D models, where objects occupy the same space or are too close to violating spatial restrictions. Time-based interferences are conflicts involving temporary objects that compete for the same space at the same time. The benefits are listed, for example, like better project coordination and quality; conflict reduction in the workplace; acceleration of design and delivery processes; and cost reduction through productivity increase. The available online media does not represent the entire process involved in Clash Detection and are generally restricted to confronting models on specific platforms. We advocate that the activity flow should structure the class of model uses in BIM education. In this way, there is a holistic and representative approach to practice. Thus, we advise escaping this model's understanding in a restricted and instrumental way, as it already occurs in most of the online media found. We propose to organize the class program by the macro stages of the activity flow, covering: (i) creation of the strategy for the clash detection in the project in question; (ii) preparation of specific models for federation; (iii) identification of federation environments or model integration; (iv) federation or integration of models; (v) checks for interference in the federated or integrated model; (vi) analysis of the conflicts identified; and (vii) referral to conflict resolution. The details of each of these activities in the template can guide the teacher on how to proceed or prepare educational content. The bibliography listed in the template covers the theoretical framework to support the class in terms of books, scientific articles, and BIM guides. One can develop the class at the level of graduation, extension, or continuing education. Being an undergraduate class, it can be mandatory or elective. Items (i) to (iii) make up the theoretical part of the class, and the rest are essentially practical content. Thus, two types of competency assessment are possible: knowledge and skills. Knowledge can be developed through discussions and seminars. Skills covered are associated with execution or domain skills, according to Succar, Scher, and Willams (2013). Execution skills are associated with learning model verification platforms and collaboration environments. The execution competence generates an instrumental skill that can be provided through individual online training with tutorials. Domain skills are essentially technical (analysis and simulation) and functional (collaboration). These skills must be instigated in a participatory and collaborative way in practical exercises involving cycles of verification of the federated model and adjustments of complementary projects' models. As a suggestion for support material, the teacher should prepare a dataset including models with errors in file naming disobeying conventions, errors in the control elements impacting the overlapping of models, errors of omission or duplication of elements in the models, and errors of data schema in terms of categorization of elements and classification of content. The models must also include issues of all types (hard, soft, and temporal interferences). Errors must be plausible to be identified by different types of verification: visual or script.
