Separation of concerns has long been considered an effective and efficient strategy to deal with complexity in information systems.One sort of concern, like security and privacy, crosses over other concerns in a system. Such concerns are called cross-cutting concerns.As a result, the realization of these concerns is scattered through the whole system, which makes their management difficult. Aspect Orientation is a paradigm in information systems which aims to modularize cross-cutting concerns.This paradigm is well researched in the programming area, where many aspect-oriented programming languages have been developed, e.g., AspectJ.It has also been investigated in other areas, such as requirement engineering and service composition.In the Business Process Management (BPM) area, Aspect Oriented Business Process Modeling aims to specify how this modularization technique can support encapsulating cross-cutting concerns in process models.However, it is not clear how these models should be supported in the whole BPM lifecycle.In addition, the support for designing these models has only been limited to imperative process models that support rigid business processes.Neither has it been investigated how this modularization technique can be supported through declarative or hybrid models to support the separation of cross-cutting concerns for flexible business processes. Therefore, this thesis investigates how aspect orientation can be supported over the whole BPM lifecycle using imperative aspect-oriented business process models. It also investigates how declarative and hybrid aspect-oriented business process models can support the separation of cross-cutting concerns in the BPM area.This thesis has been carried out following the design science framework, and the result is presented as a set of artifacts (in the form of constructs, models, methods, and instantiations) and empirical findings. The artifacts support modeling, analysis, implementation/configuration, enactment, monitoring, adjustment, and mining cross-cutting concerns while supporting business processes using Business Process Management Systems. Thus, it covers the support for the management of these concerns over the whole BPM lifecycle. The use of these artifacts and their application shows that they can reduce the complexity of process models by separating different concerns.<br>Att separera angelägenheter har länge ansetts som en effektiv och ändamålsenlig strategi för att hantera komplexitet i informationssystem. Sådana angelägenheter, till exempel säkerhet och enskildhet, kan skära tvärs över andra angelägenheter i ett system, och de kallas därför övergripande angelägenheter. Hanteringen av dessa kan vara utspridda genom hela systemet, vilket ökar komplexiteten. Aspektorientering är ett paradigm som syftar till att modularisera övergripande angelägenheter. Detta paradigm är väl utforskat i programvaruområdet, där många aspektorienterade programmeringsspråk utvecklats. Paradigmet har också undersökts i andra områden som kravhantering och tjänstesammansättning. I ärendehanteringsområdet (BPM) syftar aspektorienterad processmodellering till att inkapsla övergripande angelägenheter i processmodeller. Whatever uncertainties and complexities the future might hold, companies will be faced with a dynamic environment and will have to cope with the resulting challenges through strategy management. The objective of work presented in this thesis is to develop a better understanding of the effect of a business process based approach to strategy management. This understanding adopts a business process perspective and extends the design view to integrate financial and operational performance measures by embracing the organisation as the unit of analysis. The work presented in this research, following an in-depth review of literature, developed a set of requirements for a Dynamic Strategy Management Process. These requirements suggest that strategy management is viewed as a business process. The research continued by critically evaluating the existing strategy management frameworks, models, methodologies, tools and techniques, which have been classified according to their scope. This rev iew concluded that although approaches reviewed collectively met all the requirements, individually none of the approaches fulfilled all of these requirements. Hence, to fulfil these requirements, PROPHESY (Process Oriented Performance Headed Strategy) was developed which is documented in detail in a workbook format. PROPHESY process was tested using two alternative approaches: The broad approach was conducted using a structured and close-ended questionnaire as well as holding workshops with a total of forty managers. Narrow approach was conducted through implementation of the PROPHESY in case studies with four manufacturing companies. All feedback from these participants was used as a basis for improving the process. The research concludes with interesting observations on the positive impact of business process based strategy management approach. It also concludes that operations strategy should focus on creating value that is independent for each business unit. This means developing horizontal strategies that have objectives of coordinating business processes and developing objectives that encourage the sharing of resources and skills.

Over the years Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has gained momentum and is becoming the standard for providing systematic business solutions. Likewise, the requirements for identifying business services are fast changing and a solution to the service identification problem needs a robust approach. It is known that this task of identifying candidate services is the first and the most important step in developing service-oriented business systems. The recent approaches of identifying candidate services have some shortcomings (defined data type size, unrepeatable approach, inapplicable to all enterprise information system and unadaptable to business factor change). Some approaches focus on fixed cases or certain types of organizations (single or collaborating organizations) neglecting the enterprise systems which are either (open or closed) single or collaborating enterprise information system, which makes some past approaches not applicable to some real-life business cases. This thesis focuses on solving the headline issues and introduces a new approach for service identification applicable to different organization’s business processes. The thesis also proposes a new step-by-step algorithm and methodology that identify business services derived from data-set from any given business case.

Reporting patient states is considered an important part of care process monitoring in the hospital to efficiently monitor how well the health care system is performing. Monitoring care processes with enough fine-grained detail to precisely track wait states and service states in order to reduce wait times and improve their quality of care are challenging. Business Process Management (BPM) technology is used to bring care processes online, but there is no clear methodology on how to integrate performance management into BPM tools in a systematic matter that is effective, and minimizes complications and development costs.
This thesis proposes a BPM methodology for care process monitoring that structures how to integrate performance monitoring into BPM. The major contribution of this thesis includes a generic methodology for care processes monitoring that describes how to structure and instrument a business process model for systematic care process monitoring which includes support for handoff points between organizations where many wait-time bottlenecks occur. It also includes a prototype implementation based on an existing case study based on a real cardiology care process from an Ontario hospital. Our results are evaluated using three different prototypes based on this same care process. The research methodology for the thesis is based on Design-Science research.

Business Process Management (BPM) is management technique which seeks to constantly innovate business processes to improve customer service while reducing costs. It is introduced into organisations alongside software called Business Process Management Systems (BPMS). BPM monitors and measures processes to find opportunities for improvement of these processes. The system enables the capture of business processes by rendering them as process models; these are used to link to information, to deliver this information to staff, to automate tasks where possible, and to turn tasks into work flows which appear on manager's and staff's desktops as 'to do' lists. This thesis presents a case study of the implementation of BPM and a BPMS into a large insurance company in New Zealand. The initial research objective was to identify critical success factors (CSF's) for BPM and use Action Research (AR) in conjunction with ethnography to track the presence of the CSF's and to develop strategies to compensate for any lack in CSF's. The pilot BPM project in the organisation was successful, although it did require radical change in the business unit. However, the BPM project failed to embed BPM techniques in the rest of the organisation and was ultimately cancelled. At this point the research objective shifted to understanding the forms of power and resistance that had emerged over the course of the implementation. To understand these, a theoretical framework was developed with Rescherian process philosophy as its ontological foundation and Foucauldian concepts of power/knowledge as its epistemological foundation. The axiological foundation is that the self-formed in this processual reality is formed in the grid of power relations in which it is situated. The key findings of the research are that the concepts of culture and values are not sufficient to explain the forms of resistance that emerge when BPM and its associated Information Systems (IS) are implemented. Instead, a processual analysis using Foucauldian concepts of power and resistance proved to be a richer and more explanatory framework. This analysis found that the insurance industry is a technique of bio-power. This form of power relies on techniques of pastoral power to produce ethical, self-regulating, risk-managing subjects, both consumers and suppliers of risk mitigation products. These subjects are seen as self-governing, guided by conscience, and capable of unique responses to situations so that the manager is primarily a coach. BPM, on the other hand, is a technique of disciplinary power which produces disciplined, docile, utile subjects. These subjects are seen as requiring the three elements of hierarchical observation, normalising judgment and examination to ensure productivity and quality so that the manager is primarily an enforcer. These two forms of managerial subjectivity are opposed so that the introduction of the form of disciplinary power relations required by BPM generated resistance from the existing predominant forms of pastoral power. Ultimately this predominant form of power successfully resisted the introduction of disciplinary power. I suggest that this framework may prove useful for predicting resistance in future BPM projects.

The constant changes in governmental and customer requirements are forcing organizations to adapt in today’s dynamic market. Challenges such as international competition, increased cost pressure and efficient resource allocation are just a few examples of what organizations currently are facing. The need of managing business processes has become evident, as processes describes how well the organization is operating. Processes are no longer seen as just a tool, but as a way to visualize and standardize the organization in order to decrease variation and waste. With limited resources, ABB HVC has been working with business processes for over 20 years without any major influence since the competition has not required it. During the last three years the focus has shifted and business processes are now a hot topic. A stance has been taken and ABB HVC is now aiming to become a process-oriented organization. To become a process-oriented organization, ABB HVC needs a solid foundation built around processes. This project aims to satisfy a part of that foundation by designing a process for the technology department. As the technology department currently lacks a defined process, they cannot in a clear and visual way describe how they operate. Most of the time spent during this project, was focused on designing a functional process and to identify options for development. The research type of this project is a change focused research with an action research strategy. The selected approach is a design research methodology with qualitative data collection. In order to gather all the required information to complete the task, a literature review and an empirical analysis of ABB HVC were conducted. The result of this project was a process map describing the workflow and interactions of the technology department. An implementation plan, tools and suggested improvements have also been included in the report to provide the technology department with a strategy in how to continue the process work.<br>Ständiga förändringar och krav från myndigheter och kunder tvingar organisationer att anpassa sig till dagens dynamiska marknad. Utmaningar som internationell konkurrens, ökat kostnadstryckt och en effektiv resursfördelning är bara några exempel på vad organisationer för närvarande står inför. Behovet av att hantera affärsprocesser har blivit uppenbart eftersom processerna beskriver hur väl organisationen fungerar. Processer ses inte längre som bara ett verktyg, utan som ett sätt att visualisera och standardisera organisationen för att minska variation och slöseri. Med begränsade resurser har ABB HVC arbetat med affärsprocesser i över 20 år utan någon större påverkan för att konkurrensen inte har krävt det. Under de senaste tre åren har fokus skiftat och affärsprocesser är nu ett hett samtalsämne. En ställning har tagits och ABB HVC siktar nu på att bli en processorienterad organisation. För att bli en processorienterad organisation behöver ABB HVC en stabil grund uppbyggd kring processer. Detta projekt syftar till att tillfredsställa en del av denna grund genom att utforma en process för teknikavdelningen. Eftersom teknikavdelningen idag saknar en definierad process kan de inte tydligt beskriva hur de arbetar. Merparten av tiden spenderat under detta projekt var inriktad på att utforma en fungerande process och att identifiera alternativ för utveckling. Forskningstypen för detta projekt är en förändringsfokuserad forskning med en aktionsforskningsstrategi. Det valda tillvägagångssättet är att använda design research metodiken med kvalitativ datainsamling. För att samla in all den information som krävts för att slutföra uppgiften, har en litteraturstudie och en empirisk analys av ABB HVC utförts. Resultatet av detta projekt var en processkarta som beskriver arbetsflödet och interaktionerna för teknikavdelningen. En genomförandeplan, verktyg och förslag på förbättringar har också tagits med i rapporten för att ge teknikavdelningen en strategi för hur man ska fortsätta processarbetet.

This research presents the Business Process perspective of HRM and demonstrates gaps in HR field. The research follows a combination of Constructive and Case Study research methodologies and complies with the quality criteria set for this type of research. In this light, the research develops the HRM Business Process Model by defining HRM as a business process. The first version of the model was initially developed following an extensive literature survey. Initial validation of the model involved several companies in the UK through a structured questionnaire. Second version of the model was developed according to the comments and recommendations received from companies. The second version of the model was validated by academics from HR and Business Process fields. The Model represents a hard systems model of HRM process, which is intended to be normative outlining the key activities and information flows. An audit methodology was produced based on the Model. The HRM business process of four companies were audited using the audit methodology. These four in-depth case study companies together with the research leading up to this point led to development of new insights to the HRM theory and practices. The most significant contributions of this research are as follows: Introduced HRM as a business process and classify it as a support process; Demonstrated that, the HRM activities can be modelled as a business process, taking a systems engineering approach. This provides a "Hard Systems" perspective to HRM; Demonstrated that, the Model provides a framework that would facilitate effective deployment of business objectives to HR objectives; HRM is a business process that supports other business processes. However, in practice HRM is not recognised as a cross-functional business process; Companies with no formal HR function seem to have the most complete HR business process where the process is embedded into each function; Impact of HR process / activities are not measured or monitored in an objective explicit manner.

Reducing the complexity in information systems is a main concern on which researchers work. Separation of concerns, also known as the principle of ‘divide and conquer’, has long time been a strategy for dealing with complexity. Two examples of the application of this principle in the area of information system design are the break out the data management into Database Management Systems(DBMSs) and the separation of the business logic from the application logic into Business Process Management Systems (BPMSs). However, separation of cross-cutting concerns from the core-concern of a business process is not yet supported in the Business Process Management (BPM) area. Aspect Oriented principle recommends such a separation. When looking into the business process, several concerns, such as security and privacy, can be identified. Therefore, a formal model that provides a foundation for enabling BPMSs to support separation of concerns in BPM area is needed. This thesis provides a formal model for dealing with separation of concerns in the BPM area. Implementing this model in BPMSs would facilitate the design and implementation of business processes with a lower level of complexity, which in turn would reduce the costs associated with BPM projects. The thesis starts with a literature review on aspect orientation both in programming and in the BPM areas. Based on this study, a list of requirements for an Aspect Oriented Service for BPMSs is compiled. Then a formal model for such a service, fulfilling a set of these requirements, is designed using Coloured Petri Nets and implemented in CPN Tools. The model is evaluated through the execution of a number of scenarios. The solution is also validated through an industrial case study. The results of the case study are presented the direction for future work outlined. The case study demonstrates that separation of concerns through aspect orientation does indeed reduce the complexity of business process models.

Die nodigheid van werknemer verbintenis en besigheidsprosesse in organisasies word beskryf. ‘n Vergelyk tussen die beginsels van werknemer verbintenis en die werksbestuur proses word gedoen.
Deur middel van statistiese evaluasie tegnieke (frekwensie evaluasie) dra hierdie navorsing by tot die bestaande kennis in hierdie domein deur die identifisering van faktore wat bydra tot die onttrekking van werknemers van die werksbestuur proses en gevolglik die organisasie verlaat.
Resultate bevestig dat die werksbestuur proses die verbintenis van werknemers tot die werksbestuur proses fasiliteer, veral vir werknemers wat onlangs die arbeidsmark betree. Persoonlike groei en loopbaan ontwikkeling word egter nie ten volle ondersteun in die uitvoering van die werksbestuur proses nie.
Aanbevelings word gemaak ter ondersteuning van die implementering van ‘n volhoubare werksbestuur proses.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Presents a qualitative evaluation of the factors that influence employee engagement from the perspective of implementing and sustaining a work management business process. Describes the intent of employee engagement and business processes in organizations. Compare the principles of employee engagement and the work management business process.
By applying statistical evaluation methods (frequency analyses) this research adds to the existing body of knowledge in this field by identifying factors that lead to disengagement of employees in the execution of work management business processes and subsequent loss of skills.
Analysis indicates that the business process facilitates engagement of employees in work management at the start of their careers, however career development and personal growth for experienced employees are lacking in the execution of work management.
Concludes with recommendation for sustaining employee engagement in work management.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO<br>CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO<br>A Gestão de Processos de Negócios (em inglês, Business Process Management – BPM) tem obtido uma importância significativa tanto para os acadêmicos quanto para os participantes no mundo industrial.
Contudo, um maior número de pesquisas empíricas se faz necessário para preencher uma lacuna existente na literatura acadêmica, especialmente no que diz respeito em como as organizações estão
desenvolvendo as tarefas relacionadas à gestão de seus processos, como estão identificando as barreiras enfrentadas nesta gestão e os principais facilitadores usados para superar tais barreiras. Neste contexto,
este estudo apresenta os achados empíricos e as lições aprendidas em uma pesquisa-ação sobre a evolução da gestão dos processos logísticos de uma multinacional do ramo de entretenimento que teve duração de aproximadamente dois anos e meio. O estudo contou com a participação de membros da academia, profissionais da organização e consultores externos. A partir da literatura em BPM, foram estudados diversos ciclos de vida da gestão de processos de negócios propostos por distintos
autores e um modelo conceitual é proposto para orientar o desenvolvimento das tarefas realizadas na gestão de processos. Diferentes fatores críticos são analisados e discutidos nesta tese de

However, the academic literature needs additional empirical researches to fulfill research-practice gaps, especially on how organizations are developing BPM tasks, identifying the barriers faced and main enablers adopted. Within this context, this paper presents the empirical findings and lessons learnt from
an action research on the evolution of the logistics processes management for a multinational entertainment company. Different critical factors are analyzed and discussed within the Master Thesis regarding the
entire BPM development from a life cycle approach, focusing in the organizational, people and IT dimensions, resulting in contributions for both academics and practitioners.

Information technology developments in software and hardware have enabled radical changes in information systems, culminating in the paradigm Business Process Management. There has been a concomitant rise in the importance of information security and security engineering due to the increased reliance by society on information. Information is seen as a critical success factor which needs protection. Information security is the response to increased hazards created through recent innovations in Web technology and the advent of intra and inter enterprise-wide systems. Security engineering is based on a variety of codes of practice and security metrics which aim at ameliorating these increased security hazards. Its aim is to produce a balanced set of security needs which are integrated into the system activities to establish confidence in the effectiveness of the security counter-measures. It is generally accepted that security should be applied in an integrated approach, for example, in Information Systems development. This has proved to be a noble thought but is the exception to the rule. Security, historically, is generally applied as an after-thought in an Information Technology implementation. This motivated the concept of formulating a model of integrating security inherently within the paradigm of BPM. The overarching requirements of the model are to align the overall organisational security initiatives and ensure continuous improvement through constant evaluation and adaptation of the security processes. It is the intention of this research to show that these requirements are achievable through aligning the process management methodology of BPM, with the security paradigms of Information Security Management (using the ISO 17799 standard) and security engineering (using the Systems Security Engineering Capability Maturity Model – SSE-CMM). The aim of the Business Process Security Maturity model as the output of this research, is to link the SSE-CMM, as the security metric and appraisal method, to the ISO 17799 security standard, which provides the guidance for the information security management framework and security control selection, within the Business Process Management environment. The SSE-CMM, as the security version of the Capability Maturity Model, provides the necessary strategy to control the security engineering processes that support the information systems and it maintains that as processes mature they become more predictable, effective and manageable. The aim of the model is to provide an integrated, mature security strategy within the business process and monitor and correct the security posture of the implemented counter-measures.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the business management process for small to medium size enterprises (SMEs) and to develop an automated product management system for integrated business processing. Due to the relatively small scale of operation of these companies, they experience difficulties in applying readily available tools in the area of product management. The target of the analysis is to develop a prototype software system for automatic product management. Moreover, this software developed for this thesis is applied to a real business case---that of Inshore Fisheries, a small scale integrated fishing operation in Atlantic Canada. The system consists of six components that are grouped into two categories of input and output analysis. The Input category includes production operations and customer ordering. The Output category includes four performance reports: (1) order invoices, (2) production worksheets, (3) inventory tracking, and (4) periodic income statements. The entire system is implemented using Visual Basic 6.0. The database is designed using Microsoft Access. The four performance reports in the output are designed using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Furthermore, a GUI integrates all components together to form a complete business processing system. Based on the results of the application of this system to Inshore Fisheries, this software solution can be applied to other SMEs by making specific modifications but without revising the basic principle and system design of the software system. This system possesses a great amount of flexibility and extendibility for practical business process decision-making.

Through first using Axiomatic Design to map and optimize the process system, broader-inefficiencies will be addressed before they constrain individual processes. Then Object-Process Methodology is conducted for process-specific optimization by utilizing modern system architecture layering principles to identify nonvalue-adding entities and improve them through deletion or simplification. A case study at a large aerospace manufacturing company demonstrates the method in practical application. Results suggest that application is better suited to new or small-scale systems due to the challenge of applying Axiomatic Design to pre-existing large scale systems. Companies develop process models to explicitly describe their business operations. In the same time, business operations, business processes, must adhere to various types of compliance requirements. Regulations, e.g., Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002, internal policies, best practices are just a few sources of compliance requirements. In some cases, non-adherence to compliance requirements makes the organization subject to legal punishment. In other cases, non-adherence to compliance leads to loss of competitive advantage and thus loss of market share.
Unlike the classical domain-independent behavioral correctness of business processes, compliance requirements are domain-specific. Moreover, compliance requirements change over time. New requirements might appear due to change in laws and adoption of new policies. Compliance requirements are offered or enforced by different entities that have different objectives behind these requirements. Finally, compliance requirements might affect different aspects of business processes, e.g., control flow and data flow. As a result, it is infeasible to hard-code compliance checks in tools. Rather, a repeatable process of modeling compliance rules and checking them against business processes automatically is needed.
This thesis provides a formal approach to support process design-time compliance checking. Using visual patterns, it is possible to model compliance requirements concerning control flow, data flow and conditional flow rules. Each pattern is mapped into a temporal logic formula. The thesis addresses the problem of consistency checking among various compliance requirements, as they might stem from divergent sources. Also, the thesis contributes to automatically check compliance requirements against process models using model checking. We show that extra domain knowledge, other than expressed in compliance rules, is needed to reach correct decisions.
In case of violations, we are able to provide a useful feedback to the user. The feedback is in the form of parts of the process model whose execution causes the violation. In some cases, our approach is capable of providing automated remedy of the violation.<br>Firmen entwickeln Prozessmodelle um ihre Geschäftstätigkeit explizit zu beschreiben. Geschäftsprozesse müssen verschiedene Arten von Compliance-Anforderungen einhalten. Solche Compliance-Anforderungen entstammen einer Vielzahl von Quellen, z.B. Verordnung wie dem Sarbanes Oxley Act von 2002, interne Richtlinien und Best Practices. Die Nichteinhaltung von Compliance-Anforderungen kann zu gesetzlichen Strafen oder dem Verlust von Wettbewerbsvorteilen und somit dem Verlust von Marktanteilen führen.
Im Gegensatz zum klassischen, domänen-unabhängigen Begriff der Korrektheit von Geschäftsprozessen, sind Compliance-Anforderungen domain-spezifisch und ändern sich im Laufe der Zeit. Neue Anforderungen resultieren aus neuen Gesetzen und der Einführung neuer Unternehmensrichtlinien. Aufgrund der Vielzahl der Quellen für Compliance-Anforderungen, können sie unterschiedliche Ziele verfolgen und somit widersprüchliche Aussagen treffen. Auf Grund dessen können Compliance-Prüfungen nicht direkt Hard-coded werden. Vielmehr ist ein Prozess der wiederholten Modellierung von Compliance-Regeln und ihrer anschließenden automatischen Prüfung gegen die Geschäftsprozesse nötig.
Diese Dissertation stellt einen formalen Ansatz zur Überprüfung der Einhaltung von Compliance-Regeln während der Spezifikation von Geschäftsprozessen vor. Mit visuellen Mustern ist es möglich, Compliance-Regeln hinsichtlich Kontrollfluss- und Datenabhängigkeiten sowie bedingte Regeln zu spezifizieren. Jedes Muster wird in eine Formel der temporalen Logik abgebildet. Die Dissertation behandelt das Problem der Konsistenzprüfung zwischen verschiedenen Compliance-Anforderungen, wie sie sich aus unterschiedlichen Quellen ergeben können. Ebenfalls zeigt diese Dissertation, wie Compliance-Regeln gegen die Geschäftsprozesse automatisch mittels Model Checking geprüft werden. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass zusätzliche Domänen-Kenntnisse notwendig sind, um richtige Entscheidungen zu treffen.
Der vorgestelle Ansatz ermöglicht nützliches Feedback für Modellierer im Fall eines Compliance-Verstoßes. Business Continuity Management (BCM) addresses these problems by conducting a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) and providing a Business Continuity Plan against various expected threats and disruptions. For Business Continuity Management an integrated and coherent view of all involved business processes, IT and facility level resources services is essential. Creating such a view using ' conventional methodologies is, however, time consuming and error prone. Dealing with large, heterogenous, and complex IT infrastructures further demand automated process impact analyses, Service Level Agreement (SLA) translations and recovery plan validations. The major contributions of this research are: * A non-intrusive approach to extend business process modelling environments with BCM analysis and a model-driven methodology to create a coherent view on all important IT and facility level elements, * A novel methodology for automated Business Impact Analyses * A first ever Petri-Net based solution which permits to translate Business Process Continuity Requirements into SLAs and prop- agate these SLAs across an IT landscape.

A business process is a defined collection of linked structured tasks, activities, and decisions performed together to produce a desired set of results in order to achieve business goals on behalf of the organization. Companies are increasingly moving their business processes online using Business Process Management (BPM) tools and technologies. With BPM, online business processes are defined by an explicit business process model that flexibly combines and orchestrates forms delivered through a web browser to integrate tasks performed by people, and web services accessible through Internet protocols to integrate tasks performed by software.
Often the approach to quality assurance for online business processes is similar to what would be done with any other web application. This is insufficient since it only provides rudimentary verification of single user behavior whereas the orchestration of tasks across many users and software systems can be quite complex. As well, a simple web application testing approach does not leverage the defined model for a business process to ensure consistency, completeness and enable automation. Nor will such an approach validate that a business process is contributing towards the achievement of business goals. A more systematic approach is required.
This thesis proposes a quality assurance framework to provide a repeatable, systematic, cost-efficient approach to quality assurance for BPM. A prototype framework was implemented and evaluated using two case studies, including one case study that was developed in collaboration with a local hospital to support a business process for cancer care assessment.

Today, organizations often need to modify their business processes to cope with changes in the environment, such as mergers/acquisitions, new government regulations, and new customer demand. Most organizations also have a set of business policies defining the way they conduct their business. Although there has been extensive research on process analysis and design, how to systematically extract workflow models from business policies has not been studied, resulting in a missing link between the specification of business policies and the modeling of business processes.Given that process changes are often determined by executives and managers at the policy level, the aforementioned missing link often leads to inefficient and inaccurate implementation of process changes by business analysts and process designers. We refer to this problem as the policy mismatch problem in business process management. For organizations with large-scale business processes and a large number of business policies, solving the policy mismatch problem is very difficult and challenging.In this dissertation, we attempt to provide a formal link between business policies and workflow models by proposing a logic-based methodology for process analysis and design. In particular, we first propose a Policy-driven Process Design (PPD) methodology to formalize the procedure of extracting workflow models from business policies. In PPD, narrative process policies are parsed into precise information on various workflow components, and a set of process design rules and algorithms are applied to generate workflow models from that information.We also develop a logic-based process modeling language named Unified Predicate Language (UPL). UPL is able to represent all workflow components in a single logic format and provides analytical capability via logic inference and query. We demonstrate UPL's expressive power and analytical ability by applying it to process design and process change analysis. In particular, we use UPL to define and classify process change anomalies and develop algorithms to verify and enforce process consistency.The Policy-driven Process Design, Unified Predicate Language, and process change analysis approach found in this dissertation contribute to business process management research by providing a formal methodology for resolving the policy mismatch problem.

The importance of collaboration has been recognized for more than 2000 years. While recent improvement in technology creates vast opportunities for collaboration, effective collaboration remains challenging as ad hoc teams work across time, geographical, language, and technical boundaries, and suffer from process inefficiency. My dissertation addresses part of these challenges by proposing theoretical frameworks for business collaboration and process management. Case study is used as a research strategy for this thesis and it consists of three studies. The first study proposes a process modeling framework to support efficient process model design via model transformation and validation. First, we divide process modeling into three layers and formally define three layers of workflow models. Then, we develop a procedure for transforming a conceptual process model into its corresponding logical process model. Third, we create a validation procedure that can validate whether the derived logical model is consistent with its original conceptual model. The second study proposes a framework for analyzing the relationship between interaction processes and collaboration efficiency in software issue resolution in open source community. We first develop an algorithm to identify frequent interaction process structures referred to as interaction process patterns. Then, we assess patterns' impact through a time-dependent Cox regression model. By applying the interaction process analysis framework to software issue resolution processes, we identify several patterns that are significantly correlated with collaboration efficiency. We further conduct a case study to validate the findings of pattern efficiency in software issue resolution. The third study addresses the issue of suitability of virtual collaboration. Virtual collaboration seems to work well for some cases, but not for others. We define collaboration virtualization as the suitability for a task to be conducted virtually and propose a Collaboration Virtualization Theory (CVT) to explain collaboration virtualization. Three categories (i.e., task, technology, and team) of constructs that determine the suitability of collaboration virtualization are derived from a systematic literature review of related areas. In summary, this dissertation addresses challenges in collaboration and process management, and we believe that our research will have important theoretical and practical impacts on the development of collaboration management systems.

The middle part contains descriptive tables and Event-driven process chains of three main processes and their subprocesses. In the all processes there are identified few weaknesses that are the base for the last section. The final part suggests specific improvements to the weaknesses. It is author's proposals for solving difficulties inside of the processes. In conclusion all of the plans are grouped by every single role in the process.

Flowly is a tool for iBPMS packages, as are these intelligent suites for process management nicknamed by Gartner. These are technologies that make it possible to create and execute processes. Development of processes for these platforms goes through standard IT delivery cycle even for trivial and routine processes. Goal of this thesis is to create a tool for creating runnable business processes based on IBM Business Process Manager platform. The tool will allow creation of executable processes without programming or deep technical knowledge. Processes are created using a wizard like configurator in which processes can be drawn, users have ability to add data to the process, notifications, define SLAs and use other features. Tool created within this thesis is a workflow tool, which is a subset of iBPMS suites. The goal of this thesis is achieved by defining general functionalities of workflow tools which lay down basis of functionalities Flowly should contain. Following chapters describe in detail the creation of the tool, from initial analysis and design to technical details of implementation and user documentation. Benefits of the tool lie in simplicity of creating processes in iBPMS suites, increased agility of the company, when the creation and deployment of new process is shifted into the order of days and in massive reduction of cost of routine processes and agendas due to reduced IT involvement.

This fragmentation manifests itself in the form of diversified business processes performing similar activities. To address this challenge and achieve synergies across business units, processes should be integrated. Extant research on business process management has not paid much attention to such integration. Motivated by this concern, the primary objectives of my research are: “1) to understand how integration of similar business processes is achieved by semiautonomous business units and 2) to develop a process modeling support system that can help find similarities among business process models to aid process designers and to empirically evaluate its effectiveness in supporting process modeling activities.” I use a two-phased approach to address above objectives. In the first phase, I draw upon the analytic concept of frames of reference to develop a socio-cognitive process model to understand cognitive processes of stakeholders involved in the business process integration. This is done by analyzing the shifts in frame salience and frame congruence to enable the development of common-yet-tailorable business process. Data collection was conducted at ManCo, a Fortune 500 manufacturing company that had undertaken a process integration initiative in its multi-billion dollar supply chain across its five business units. Using qualitative data analysis, I identify four frame domains. Shifts in the frame salience and congruence highlight how, through a series of events, process stakeholders bring about integration. Frames domains identified in phase 1 highlight how individual business units’ perceptions differ. The use of diverse terminologies to refer to similar concepts added to the inability of process designers to reuse existing process models. These observations motivated the design research conducted in the second phase. I develop a prototype system, BPSimilar, which helps users to retrieve semantically similar process models. The approach to retrieve process models combines structural and semantic similarity-matching. The need for such a mechanism to speed up the model development was suggested by the case study. The effectiveness of BPSimilar for improving performance of users is evaluated in a qualitative study using verbal protocol analysis.

<p>We analyze here the topic of integration, in the area of factory automation,</p><p>from sensor/actuator levels to plant management levels.</p><p>The communication at the plant level is based on wireless technology</p><p>while management applications run in supervisory concentrators</p><p>but can also be distributed, communicating via the Internet. The</p><p>work reported here is part of SOCRADES, a European advanced research</p><p>and development project aiming to build a design, execution</p><p>and management platform for next-generation industrial automation</p><p>systems. While theoretical and simulation level results have been</p><p>previously reached, our nal goal here is a real-life demonstrator at</p><p>a mining plant - New Boliden (Boliden, Sweden). The thesis work</p><p>is a continuation of the previous work in the project, and provides</p><p>support for the integration of WirelessHART networks at the plant</p><p>level, and a management application dialogue between ABB and SAP</p><p>systems, two main partners in the SOCRADES project. A small control</p><p>environment is to be deployed at the Boliden plant, to supervise</p><p>a tank level control system. The plant is connected, via ABB control</p><p>and management applications and servers to high management</p><p>procedures of the partners. Targeted results of the MSc work are</p><p>an interface between wireless and wired systems, the deployment of</p><p>a control environment at Boliden, the development of the enterprise</p><p>business management facilities and the realization of a software package</p><p>to support the WirelessHART solution.</p>

Workflow technology has become a standard solution for managing increasingly complex business processes. Successful business process management depends on effective workflow modeling, which has been limited mainly to modeling the control and coordination of activities, i.e. the control flow perspective. However, given a workflow specification that is flawless from the control flow perspective, errors can still occur due to incorrect dataflow specification, which is referred to as dataflow anomalies.Currently, there are no sufficient formalisms for discovering and preventing dataflow anomalies in a workflow specification. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation is to develop formal methods for automatically detecting dataflow anomalies from a given workflow model and a rigorous approach for workflow design, which can help avoid dataflow anomalies during the design stage.In this dissertation, we first propose a formal approach for dataflow verification, which can detect dataflow anomalies such as missing data, redundant data, and potential data conflicts. In addition, we propose to use the dataflow matrix, a two-dimension table showing the operations each activity has on each data item, as a way to specify dataflow in workflows. We believe that our dataflow verification framework has added more analytical rigor to business process management by enabling systematic elimination of dataflow errors.We then propose a formal dependency-analysis-based approach for workflow design. A new concept called "activity relations" and a matrix-based analytical procedure are developed to enable the derivation of workflow models in a precise and rigorous manner. Moreover, we decouple the correctness issue from the efficiency issue as a way to reduce the complexity of workflow design and apply the concept of inline blocks to further simplify the procedure. These novel techniques make it easier to handle complex and unstructured workflow models, including overlapping patterns.In addition to proving the core theorems underlying the formal approaches and illustrating the validity of our approaches by applying them to real world cases, we provide detailed algorithms and system architectures as a roadmap for the implementation of dataflow verification and workflow design procedures.

[Context] Interdisciplinary healthcare teams (IHTs) include practitioners from different disciplines who collaborate for providing care to patients. IHTs often follow clinical workflows composed of tasks that must be executed by practitioners with specific capabilities. The membership in an IHT can however evolve over time for a given patient. [Problem] Existing Business Process Management (BPM) suites and their workflow execution engines are designed for supporting and monitoring general workflows, but they are insufficient in supporting the allocation of tasks to the most suitable practitioners during the execution of healthcare workflows in a dynamic context. [Methodology] Using Design Science Research, this thesis builds on top of an existing semantic layer, which includes an ontology defining IHT team concepts and relationships that are used to reason automatically about team dynamics, in order to add dynamic team management to BPM suites. It does so by proposing and designing middleware (including a generic interface) that enables the semantic layer to command the BPM suite to allocate suitable practitioners to tasks during the execution of clinical workflows. The design and implementation of this middleware are discussed, and the latter is tested on a commercial BPM suite for two realistic clinical processes. [Results] The proof-of-concept implementation demonstrates the feasibility of using middleware with a generic interface to add support for IHT executing BPM suite when managing a patient. In addition, the thesis also demonstrates that the ontology used in the semantic layer is minimal, that is, all of its concepts and relationships are necessary for the required team functionalities (usually absent from BPM tools) to work properly.

[Context] Clinical pathology is a medical specialty that uses laboratory analysis of tissues and fluids to diagnose diseases. As emerging methodologies and technologies extend their realm to anatomical pathology, pathology facilities are faced with new challenges related to the increasing volume and complexity of patient cases in their work processes. [Problem] Existing tools that monitor process data show limitations in supporting pathology process management. They lack the capability of identifying emerging process bottlenecks in a real-time manner, and this prevents facility managers from conducting corrective actions proactively. [Methodology] Applying the Design Science Research Methodology, this thesis proposes and builds a Business Intelligence solution that provides visual analysis and real-time monitoring functions to support pathology process management. A usability study with expert participants from the Eastern Ontario Regional Laboratory Association was conducted to validate this solution. [Results] The proposed solution meets the requirements of the experts and can provide efficient, flexible, and multi-tenancy support to users in the context of their daily professional activities.
