The interpretation of Qur'an 66:4 relates to our understanding of events in the Prophet's household in the early Medinan period. Traditionally, exegetes have tended to interpret this verse as a reprimand to the wives of the Prophet, their interpretation resting on their understanding of the meaning of ṣaghw. AbstractThere is a strong correlation between a restrictive view on women’s clothing as detailed in Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-83582-8_16 and a restrictive view on women’s participation in public life. Combined with the jurists’ extending of the “elite” rules applicable only to the Prophet’s wives to all women while re-interpreting them to boot, this leaves women in many societies with too little room in public life. The chapter examines the figure of Umm Salama, one of the Prophet’s wives who is lauded in the Shiʿi tradition for her devotion to the ahl al-bayt, the Prophet’s descendants. Umm Salama plays a key role in establishing the legitimate succession of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib to the position of leadership of the Muslim community, as well as subsequent successions. Her case is one of many instances in which the women associated with the ahl al-bayt play a vital part in preserving the naṣṣ or explicit designation of a successor that guaranteed the proper unfolding of the historical Imamate.
