Resumen
In the NSM approach to semantic analysis, semantic molecules are a well-defined set of non-primitive lexical meanings in a given language that function as intermediate-level units in the structure of complex meanings in that language. After reviewing existing work on the molecules concept (including the notion of levels of nesting), the paper advances a provisional list of about 180 productive semantic molecules for English, suggesting that a small minority of these (about 25) may be universal. It then turns close attention to a set of potentially universal level-one molecules from the “enviro

AbstractThis paper considers the nature of lexical knowledge and its role in language and information processing. The lexicon is the central component of language and plays a pivotal role in current linguistic theory [3, 4] and, increasingly, in natural language processing systems [5-7]. The lexicon embodies information aboutthe lexical items ofthe language and serves as the foundation for morphologic, syntactic, and semantic processing. The differences as well as commonalities among dictionaries, thesauri, and lexicons are discussed, and distinctions between words, lexical items, and terms ar

Abstract With the rise of exemplar theory, the role of lexical frequency in language variation has been the object of considerable study. Their results suggest that frequency either activates or amplifies the effects of other constraints, such as co-reference. To do so, we analyze the cases of phraseological variation drawn from the novel La Plaie, written by the French author Nathalie Henneberg, as a resource that encourages the contextualization of the readers within a fictional universe thanks t

This paper concisely reinvestigates translatorial action and observes that the ‘meaning’ of lexical items is not the same with the ‘sense’ of lexical items. The central distinctions between the two terms are that the meaning of lexical items is not only a subjective application, but is also dependent on its environment for its truth-value within any given linguistic discourse. The sense of a word however, refers to its objective use and is context independent. Meaning is viewed as having a direct link with the communicative approach to translation. Drawing on the feature analysis of pronouns and the assumption that lexical items normally have equal probabilities, his analysis provides two ‘routes’ to we/you was, but only one to we/you were, thereby explaining why the former is on average twice as common as the latter. Lexical-semantic relationships between words are key information for many NLP tasks, which require this knowledge in the form of lexical resources. This thesis addresses the acquisition of lexical-semantic relation instances. State of the art systems rely on word pair representations based on patterns of contexts where two related words co-occur to detect their relation. This approach is hindered by data sparsity: even when mining very large corpora, not every semantically related word pair co-occurs or not frequently enough. The four elements may be regarded both as four separate motifs and as constituting one semantically coherent motif complex. Chapter 2 introduces an empirical classification of evidentials across languages. This chapter discusses semantic diagnostics from the literature, illustrating them with representative languages, and shows how Cheyenne fits into this classification. While there are several dimensions of variation, there are also striking crosslinguistic generalizations, with evidentials sharing a core set of properties. This points to the need for a unified analysis that can capture these shared properties, treating evidentials crosslinguistically as a natural semantic class, while being fine‐grained enough to

Although the roughly 6,500 languages around the world have many similarities in the sorts of concepts they encode, they also vary greatly in how they partition particular conceptual domains, how they map those domains onto syntactic categories, which distinctions they force speakers to habitually track, and how deeply they weave certain notions into the fabric of their grammar. AbstractSensory-motor information is linguistically encoded by action verbs. Such verbs are not only used to express action concepts and events, but they are also pervasively exploited in the linguistic representation of abstract concepts and figurative meanings. In the light of several theoretical approaches (i.e., Embodied Theories, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Image Schema Theory), this paper analyzes the mechanisms that enable action verbs to acquire abstract meanings and that motivate the symmetries (or asymmetries) in the semantic variations of locally equivalent verbs (e.g., premere and spingere; Eng., to press and to push). The research is carried out within the IMAGACT framework and focuses on a set of four Italian action verbs encoding force (i.e., premere, spingere, tirare, and trascinare; Eng., to press, to push, to pull, and to drag). The results confirm that metaphorical extensions of action verbs are constrained by the image schemas involved in the core meaning of the verbs. Additionally, the paper shows that these image schemas are responsible for the asymmetries in the metaphorical variation of action verbs pertaining to the same semantic class (i.e., force).

Surgical instrument segmentation is crucial for computer-assisted surgery. Different from common object segmentation, it is more challenging due to the large illumination variation and scale variation in the surgical scenes. In this paper, we propose a bilinear attention network with adaptive receptive fields to address these two issues. To deal with the illumination variation, the bilinear attention module models global contexts and semantic dependencies between pixels by capturing second-order statistics. With them, semantic features in challenging areas can be inferred from their neighbors,

Abstract Capturing design process is becoming an important topic of feature-based modeling, as well as in product data exchange, concurrent design, and cooperative design. Three critical issues on the modeling of design process are considered in this paper, namely, feature concepts, feature evolution, and the semantic consistencies of the states of product models. A semantics-based product model is introduced to facilitate the description of both conceptual and detailed models, and to maintain the semantic consistencies of product states. The process is represented by feature states and their

Due to the variation of business practices from one company to another and the lack of flexibility to support different business practices, enterprise systems need to be customized based on the requirements of individual companies. Customization is one the major activities in the enterprise system implementation. It is mainly a process of redesigning and redeveloping functions of an enterprise information system for a particular company. The extra time required for customization definitely stretches the deployment cycle and increases the implementation cost. It is also a barrier that hampers c

Abstract One of the main problems to be solved in design-by-features is to preserve the semantic correctness of feature-based models. Currently, feature-based parametric design (FbPD) is being used as one of the most powerful approaches for solving this problem. In this paper, a fundamental principle of this approach is introduced. Three aspects stated, are: FbPD deals with functional design primitives, it solves the automatic generation of model variations, and it offers the basis for the development of a mechanism to check the semantic correctness of feature-based models. This paper discusses the use of most widely-known Russian corpora, namely Russian National Corpus, ruTenTen, General Internet Corpus of Russian, and Araneum Russicum Maximum, for the theoretical study of Russian language. Based on a sample of papers from 2019, I demonstrate that scholars, especially theoretical linguists, tend to ignore the opportunities provided by a wide range of Web corpora, even though these resources are well-known to the NLP community. I present a selection of case studies to show that data from “non-classical” corpora can be used for studying various linguistic phenomen

Using network topology and semantic contents to find topic-related communities is a new trend in the field of community detection. By analyzing texts in social networks, we find that topics in networked contents are often hierarchical. In most cases, they have a two-level semantic structure with general and specialized topics, to respectively denote common and specific interests of communities. However, the existing community detection methods ignore such a hierarchy and take all words used to describe node semantics from an identical perspective. This indiscriminate use of words leads to natu

Motivated by the capability of Generative Adversarial Network on exploring the latent semantic space and capturing semantic variations in the data distribution, adversarial learning has been adopted in network embedding to improve the robustness. However, this important ability is lost in existing adversarially regularized network embedding methods, because their embedding results are directly compared to the samples drawn from perturbation (Gaussian) distribution without any rectification from real data. To overcome this vital issue, a novel Joint Adversarial Network Embedding (JANE) framewor

Scientific discourse is a specialized, semantically dense language used to formulate clear, objective arguments around experimental results. However, science classrooms are practically void of scientific argumentation and this important skill is rarely modelled or developed in these spaces. Yet, students are expected to engage with complex disciplinary texts and then demonstrate their mastery of scientific subject matter using appropriate scientific discourse. Students find this extremely challenging and many are implicitly excluded from successful engagement with the subject. The aim of our s
