Resumen
The prominence of Modular Multilevel Inverters (MMI) is rising owing their merits of simple mechanical construction and good voltage sharing for semiconductor devices. Mostly Multilevel Inverters use more than one source; however, the effective use of all the sources at all levels is rare. Conventional Multilevel Inverters will diminish the energy efficiency of the conversion system. When compared to conventional multilevel inverter, Modular Multilevel Inverter with a high numbers of voltage levels seem to be the most suitable because of the use of an isolated dc source. This paper explores a three-phase eleven level modular multilevel inverter with phase disposition pulse width modulation technique (PD-PWM) that can extract power from all the sources at all the levels. Besides, this paper develops a synchronous d-q reference frame controller to control the current of 11kV. When compared with Reduced Switch Count based Multilevel Inverter Series/Parallel switching topologies, the Modular Multilevel Inverter provides better Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of output voltage and utilization factor.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the three phase seven-level Z-source neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter with multicarrier pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique. Despite numerous topologies and modulation methods, there is a dire need of developing PWM techniques that can be deployed in multilevel inverters. These inverters decrease the total harmonic distortion and it has a good performance for various electrical power system applications. The proposed inverter is investigated for its performance by executing it in shoot through and non-shoot through modes. Design/methodology/approach The purpose is validated through MATLAB/Simulink software platform for implementing the proposed seven-level Z-source NPC inverter outlined with multicarrier based phase disposition technique. The experimental results are verified using SPARTAN 3E FPGA controller with the same control strategy. Findings The efficiency of the proposed inverter is confirmed in terms of increased and faster conversion in the shoot-through mode. By using PDPWM technique the maximum boost gain is achieved with lower modulation index. High control of DC voltage is obtained with only one DC voltage source and one Z network. Originality/value Three phase multilevel inverters are widely used in improving the output voltage quality and reducing the encountered electromagnetic interference in electronic device or circuitry. They are employed in medium and high –power applications to attain increased power ratings while decreasing the switching losses. The performance results shown in this paper will satisfy the above needs of usage in certain applications and less switching losses.

Resumen
Various industrial applications require a voltage conversion stage from DC to AC. Among them, commercial renewable energy systems (RES) need a voltage buck and/or boost stage for islanded/grid connected operation. Despite the excellent performance offered by conventional two-stage converter systems (dc–dc followed by dc–ac stages), the need for a single-stage conversion stage is attracting more interest for cost and size reduction reasons. Although voltage source inverters (VSIs) are voltage buck-only converters, single stage current source inverters (CSIs) can offer voltage boost features, although at the penalty of using a large DC-link inductor. Boost inverters are a good candidate with the demerit of complicated control strategies. The impedance source (Z-source) inverter is a high-performance competitor as it offers voltage buck/boost in addition to a reduced passive component size. Several pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques have been presented in the literature for three-phase Z-source inverters. Various common drawbacks are annotated, especially the non-linear behavior at low modulation indices and the famous trade-off between the operating range and the converter switches’ voltage stress. In this paper, a modified discontinuous PWM technique is proposed for a three-phase z-source inverter offering: (i) smooth voltage gain variation, (ii) a wide operating range, (iii) reduced voltage stress, and (iv) improved total harmonic distortion (THD). Simulation, in addition to experimental results at various operating conditions, validated the proposed PWM technique’s superior performance compared to the conventional PWM techniques.

Resumen
This study aims to create a PWM inverter that can drive the Brushless Unidirectional Flow Machine (MASTS). PWM inverters are intended to correct deficiencies in six-step inverters. Inverter is a circuit that is used to convert a DC voltage source into an AC voltage with a certain frequency. The use of inverters is found in electric vehicles. The system often used to control an inverter is a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) based control, where pulse width is used to regulate speed. The inverter is tested using 3 pairs of mosfets as a switch to control the three-phase output of the inverter. In the inverter, PWM is used to adjust the width of the frequency pulse that will be given to the mosfet. This research used 3 variations of duty cycle 30%, 60%, 90% to determine the effect of MASTS speed on PWM by using a PWM inverter. The results of this study the speed of MASTS can be influenced by changes in duty cycle, with increasing value of the duty cycle, the faster the speed of MASTS, and vice versa. Photovoltaic grid-connected power generation is the inevitable development trend of solar photovoltaic systems,grid inverter is an essential part of photovoltaic grid-connected power generation. With the developed three phase current type PWM inverter device as the research object, and symmetry rules sampling method is applied to the inverter, through the method combined by the computer simulation and experiment research, the device was verified by simulation and experimental .The results show that: This method could not only effectively reduce the DC side inductance volume of the current-mode PWM inverter , and it could make output AC currents sinusoidal and in phase with grid voltages, but also improve the efficiency of the system, it will be more suitable for photovoltaic grid-connected.

Resumen
In recent years, a Multilevel Inverter (MLI) topology is highly preferred in the various renewable energy applications for converting power due to their merits. In this paper, a three-phase inverter has been designed for grid-connected applications using Proportional Integral (PI) current controller scheme. To generate a sequence, the Level shift (LS) and Phase Shift (PS) Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) methodologies are adapted. This topology has been designed with two stages: the DC-DC conversion stage and DC-AC conversion stage. The DC-DC conversion stage is used to enrich input DC voltage which is obtained from the solar PV array. The PI current controller has been designed to regulate the grid current with park transformation. The performances of the inverter have been examined in terms of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) using different PWM techniques and also investigated with existing research works. The developed results are verified using MATLAB/ Simulink.

<span lang="EN-US">In this paper a hardware implementation of single-phase cascaded H-bridge three level multilevel inverter (MLI) using sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) is presented. There are a few interesting features of using this configuration, where less component count, less switching losses, and improved output voltage/current waveform. The output of power inverter consists of three form, that is, square wave, modified square wave and pure sine wave. The pure sine wave and modified square wave are more expensive than square wave. The focus paper is to generate a PWM signal which control the switching of MOSFET power semiconductor. The sine wave can be created by using the concept of Schmitt-Trigger oscillator and low-pass filter topology followed by half of the waveform will be eliminated by using the circuit of precision half-wave rectifier. Waveform was inverted with 180º by circuit of inverting op-amp amplifier in order to compare saw-tooth waveform. Two of PWM signal were produced by circuit of PWM and used digital inverter to invert the two PWM signal before this PWM signal will be passed to 2 MOSFET driver and a 3-level output waveform with 45 Hz was produced. As a conclusion, a 3-level output waveform is produced with output voltage and current recorded at 22.5 Vrms and 4.5 Arms. The value of measured resistance is 0.015 Ω that cause voltage drop around 0.043 V. Based on the result obtained, the power for designed inverter is around 100W and efficiency recorded at 75%.</span>

Discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) strategies are usually adopted to reduce the switching loss and output current ripple of three-phase three-level traction inverters under three-phase load conditions. However, if there is a short circuit in any arbitrary phase or the inverter is used to feed a two-phase load, the output performance of conventional DPWM strategies will be deteriorated. Here, four improved DPWM (IDPWM) strategies for three-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) traction inverter fed two-phase load are proposed. Unlike three-phase load conditions, the phase angle and the amplitude of each basic voltage vector in the space vector diagram are modified under two-phase load conditions. Consequently, sectors are re-divided and duty cycles of basic vectors during synthesis are recalculated. Clamping intervals of each phase for the four type discontinuous PWM (DPWM) strategies are rearranged according to the modified space vector diagram; then, the proposed DPWM strategies can be obtained. Compared with the conventional DPWM strategies, the output current waveform quality of the proposed strategy is significantly improved. Meanwhile, the amplitude of the neutral-point voltage ripple is also reduced.

Resumen
<span>The multi carrier modulation technique is the most employed PWM technique for cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI) since this control strategy can be easily extended to higher number of levels of output compared to space vector PWM technique. This paper proposes a modified multi carrier PWM technique for three-phase CMLI. The proposed PWM technique has been implemented using MATLAB Xilinx System Generator, which automatically generate code from system model. The hardware implementation of the three-phase CMLI has been carried out to substantiate the working of proposed PWM technique. Novel FPGA Wavect digital controller is used to generate the PWM pulses, which is a real time simulator and controller. This digital controller improves the accuracy of the hardware implementation. Hardware implementation of proposed control strategy for three-phase CMLI with RL load proves that the proposed PWM technique results in improved power output quality with reduced harmonic components.</span>

In this paper, a new 9-level inverter employing switched capacitor technique is proposed. Three bidirectional voltage blocking switches are employed to connect the four H-bridges and to incorporate the three switched capacitors. The proposed multilevel inverter (MLI) circuit outputs a 9-level waveform with a maximum boosting factor of four. Unlike the already established switched capacitor based MLI consisting of two stages the proposed MLI is single stage inverter. The switches in the proposed MLI is subjected to a low value of voltage stress equal to Vdc. The proposed MLI is further analyzed by using various multicarrier sinusoidal PWM technique such as Phase Shift PWM (PSPWM), Phase disposition PWM (PDPWM), Phase Opposition Disposition PWM (PODPWM), Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition PWM (APODPWM) and Variable Frequency PWM (VFPWM).

<p>A 21-levels cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter topology based on three-phase voltage source inverter has been proposed as a superior replacement for conventional two-level in high voltage applications. In this work we have presented the usage of the new technique called virtual synchronous generator based synchronverter model to operate the multilevel inverter as synchronous generator, and to share active and reactive power automatically in case of parallel operated inverters of the same type. Carrier-based PWM is used to control each phase leg of the cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter. This carrier-based PWM scheme is derived from the carrier phase disposition pulse width modulation strategy. By aid of MATLAB/Simulink package a simulation experiment is established to verify the performance of the proposed technique.</p><p> </p>

Resumen
Based on the Bessel function, a novel calculation model of iron losses of electric magnetic material fed by PWM inverter is proposed. Considering the influence of modulation index of inverters, the numerical relationship between material iron losses and PWM modulation index is presented. By improving on the Epstein frame measuring system, a method is proposed to measure the material loss under non-sinusoidal voltage, two three-phase experimental induction motors fed by inverter is considered, the results prove the model is valid.

This paper proposes a three-phase isolated flyback inverter (IFBI) for single-stage grid-tied solar PV applications, considering a simple sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) scheme. The proposed single-stage inverter employs a reduced passive elements count by considering three input-parallel output-differential (IPOD) flyback converter modules. Additionally, a single small size LC-input low-pass filter is utilized at the input paralleling point for ripple-free input current operation, which is essential in grid-connected renewable energy applications. In addition, a mathematical model of the IFBI is presented to confirm the existence of its low-order harmonic components. A simple PI controller-based control scheme, considering only two loops and five sensors, is used to control the proposed grid-tied IFBI. Continuous modulation scheme (CMS) combined with SPWM is used to diminish the low-frequency harmonic components. Moreover, a simple selective harmonic elimination (SHE) loop is used for second-order harmonic components (SOHC) elimination from grid-injected currents. The SHE has decreased the SOHC from 43% to 0.96%, which improves the grid current THD from 39% to 3.65%, to follow the IEEE harmonic standard limits. Additionally, the harmonic elimination technique decreases the circulating power between the inverter paralleled modules, which enhances the grid currents power factor. The proposed inverter is verified through a grid-connected 200 V, 1.6 kW, 60 Hz experimental prototype, and the switching frequency is 50 kHz. TMS-based DSP controller is used to control the grid-injected power to follow the reference power set-point.

Traditional three-phase voltage-source inverters supplied by constant dc-link voltage usually utilize the space vector PWM to achieve maximum output voltage. This paper deals with optimization of inverter leg voltages using linear programming method. System definition is based on the relationship between the known voltage vector, which is demanded by an upper control loop and the unknown leg voltages which enter the carrier-based PWM block as modulation signals. A slack variable is introduced to the system as minimization objective, defining border for all leg voltages. Optimization procedure minimizes leg voltage maxima, and thus, the maximum utilization of the dc-link voltage is ensured. The theoretical assumptions have been verified by simulations as well as by experiments on laboratory prototype.

This paper presents PIC microcontroller based PWM inverter controlled four switch three phase inverter (FSTPI) fed Induction Motor drive. The advantage of this inverter that uses of 4 switches instead of conventional 6 switches is lesser switching losses, lower electromagnetic interference (EMI), less complexity of control algorithms and reduced interface circuits. Simulation and experimental work are carried out and results presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. Simulation is carried out using MATLAB SIMULINK and in the experimental work a prototype model is built to verify the simulation results. PIC microcontroller (PIC 16F877A) is used to generate the PWM pulses for FSTPI to drive the 0.5 hp 3-phase Induction Motor.

The conventional line-commutated ac-to-dc converters/ inverters have square-shaped line current. It contains higher-order harmonics which generates EMI and it causes more heating of the core of distribution or power transformers. PWM based inverters using MOSFET/IGBT have higher switching losses, and the power handling capability and reliability are quite low in comparison to thyristors/ SCR. A thyristor based forced commutated inverters are not suitable for PWM applications due to the problems of commutation circuits. A pure sinusoidal voltage output or waveform with low harmonic contents is most desirable for ac load using dc to ac conversion. This paper presents a new multilevel inverter topology in which three phase ac- to-dc converter circuits are used in inversion mode by controlling the switching angle. Due to natural commutation, no separate circuit is required for synchronization. In this paper simulation and analysis are done for grid-tied three-phase 6-pulse, Two three-phase, 3-pulse and 12-pulse converter. These converters are analysed for different battery voltage and different switching angle combinations in order to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD). Three-phase harmonic filters are further added to the grid side to reduce the harmonic content in the line current. A comparative study of these converters is also presented in this paper.

This paper presents a three-phase cascaded five-level H-bridge quasi-switched boost inverter (CHB-qSBI). The merits of the CHB-qSBI are as follows: single-stage conversion, shoot-through immunity, buck-boost voltage, and reduced passive components. Furthermore, a PWM control method is applied to the CHB-qSBI topology to improve the modulation index. The voltage stress across power semiconductor devices and the capacitor are significantly lower using improved pulse-width modulation (PWM) control. Additionally, by controlling individual shoot-through duty cycle, the DC-link voltage of each module can achieve the same values. As a result, the imbalance problem of the DC-link voltage can be solved. A detailed analysis and operating principle with the modulation scheme and comprehensive comparison for the CHB-qSBI are illustrated. The experimental and simulation results are presented to validate the operating principle of the three-phase CHB-qSBI.

In this paper, a hybrid multilevel inverter (MLI) with reduced number of components is modelled by deriving its source from solar PV array. The power switches of this MLI are controlled by utilizing the pulses derived by comparing the reference and carrier signal. The reference signal for the modulation process is based on 60 degree PWM. The carriers considered for the modulation process are triangular carrier wave and inverted sine carrier wave arranged in phase Disposition (PD) multicarrier method. The output voltage waveform of this hybrid MLI under consideration is analyzed with different performance parameters like Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), RMS Voltage, DC utilization Rate and harmonic spectrum. The simulation results show that the inverted sine based PD technique is yielding better performance than that of other technique. The above mentioned are examined with the help of MATLAB / SIMULINK.

With increasing research and advancement in solid-state power electronic devices and microprocessors, various inverter control techniques employing Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) are becoming popular especially in AC motor drive applications. The most commonly used techniques are Sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) and Space Vector modulation PWM (SVPWM). SVPWM is considered to be superior to the SPWM because of better DC bus utilization. In this paper, a real-time digital implementation of SVPWM algorithm for three-phase two level inverter using dSPACE DS1104. The results obtained from the experimentation are closer to that of simulation, which confirms the validity of the implemented algorithm.

Resumen
Many reduced-switch-count (RSC) inverter topologies have been proposed in the literature. As the number of switches required to produce a set of voltages in RSC inverters are less than that in conventional inverter, as a result utilizing RSC inverters in a certain system reduces its size and cost. In this paper, a novel RSC shared inverter topology consisting of fifteen switches and capable of driving four three-phase AC-loads independently is proposed and experimentally verified. A carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) technique that employs the zero-sequence-signal injection principle is developed to drive the proposed inverter along with adequate DC voltage bus utilization between the shared loads for common frequency (CF) as well as different frequency (DF) modes. The structure and the principle of operation of the proposed inverter are introduced and intensively verified using simulation and field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA)-in-the-loop simulation under linear and nonlinear loads. Then, Inverter prototype was built and the proposed inverter has been verified experimentally. The experimental results verify the applicability of the proposed inverter and the employed PWM.

The paper discusses the method and procedure to the simulation model that includes several key modules: PWM module, inverter module, and PMSM module. The simulating results are presented and analyzed.
