Resumen
La presente tesis estudia las características de la obra de Tim Burton, considerado uno de los cineastas más originales y estimulantes del Hollywood actual. Se pone en relación su obra cinematográfica con su biografía, algo especialmente relevante en un artista que recurre tan menudo a su experiencia vital y a los elementos que conformaron su educación sentimental. Se examina su situación dentro del contexto de la industria hollywoodiense y se estudian las constantes estéticas y temáticas que conforman su poética visual. Se aborda la problemática del género, la noción de fantástico y la tradición gótico-expresionista con el fin de comprender la obra de un autor que reinterpreta la tradición cultural desde la óptica de la postmodernidad. Se tratan los problemas y contradicciones que plantean tanto la concepción tradicional de los géneros fílmicos como la teoría del cine de autor. Se comprueba que no solamente resultan enfoques compatibles, sino que pueden además convertirse en planteamientos complementarios que contribuyen a la profundidad y riqueza del debate fílmico. Se habla sobre la particular reflexión genérica que realiza el cineasta en sus películas, conectándola con las características de la cultura postmoderna en la que se encuentra inmerso. En el capítulo dedicado al fantástico se pone de manifiesto que se trata de un concepto que se resiste a cualquier intento de definición y categorización exacta. Dado además su amplio alcance, resulta más apropiado considerarlo, más que un género, un modo artístico del que emergen distintas formas relacionadas. Se contemplan las diversas teorías que existen sobre el fantástico, su potencial subversivo y sus implicaciones psicoanalíticas. Se pone un interés especial en sus temas y mitos, ya que todos ellos son evocados en las películas de Burton. El fantástico actual destaca precisamente por su referencialidad, por su reflexión metagenérica y asimilación del pasado. También se contempla la obra del cineasta como continuadora de una tradición gótico-expresionista, un movimiento continuo cuyo espíritu, estética y posicionamiento vital se oponen a la actitud racionalista del clasicismo. Se realiza un recorrido por los elementos que conforman una tradición que Burton ha recogido principalmente a través de sus manifestaciones cinematográficas. Tim Burton es heredero y continuador de este espíritu romántico, de su atmósfera e iconografía características, de la estética de lo siniestro, de su macabro sentido del humor, de la denuncia de la hipocresía social y de la sociedad que niega la libertad y la identidad individuales, de su énfasis en la subjetividad, la intuición y lo irracional.A continuación se trata el modo en que Tim Burton crea el espacio fantástico mediante una cuidadísima puesta en escena donde el diseño, la fotografía y la música compuesta por Danny Elfman se convierten en elementos fundamentales de la expresión dramática. Finalmente se analizan en profundidad Eduardo Manostijeras y Pesadilla antes de Navidad, películas compendio que representan el conjunto de la poética visual del director. Cierto sector de la crítica considera las películas de Burton como deslumbrantes pero huecos ejercicios de virtuosismo formal. Este trabajo trata de demostrar que, efectivamente, Burton posee un brillante talento visual, pero esto no significa que deje de lado consideraciones más amplias sobre la historia y el significado. La entidad y complejidad de los temas y personajes de sus películas evitan que se conviertan en meros ejercicios de estilo.
This doctoral thesis studies the characteristics of Tim Burton's cinema. It relates his work to his life, examines his situation into the contemporary Hollywood industry and considers the constant elements that form his visual poetic. It studies the question and contradictions of film genres and the Theories of Authorship. It examines the characteristics of Postmodern culture and the particular intertextual practice in Burton's films. It contemplates the fantastic phenomenon, that is best regarded as an artistic mode from which a number of related genres emerge. It considers Tim Burton's cinema to be the heir of what is denominated the Gothic-expressionist Tradition, a movement whose spirit, aesthetics and vital position are in opposition to the rational attitude of Classicism. It discusses the way Tim Burton creates the fantastic space through a careful stage design and the music composed by Danny Elfman.The films Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas are analysed in depth in order to prove that Burton's emotive storylines, and the complexity and entity of his themes and characters, shift his films away from being mere exercises in style.

Référentiel, réflexif, métaphorique constituent un échantillon des expressions et concepts employés pour qualifier les films de Tim Burton, attestant du lien qui unit ce corpus à l'histoire de son art et à son époque. Partant de ce constat, l'hypothèse proposée ici affirme que cette filmographie constitue un cinéma de la ré-imagination. Le cinéaste emploie lui même ce terme pour définir l'approche conceptuelle de son cinéma. Cette thèse explique d'abord le choix de ce mot par rapport aux concepts pré existants pour ensuite analyser ce qu'il englobe et implique dans la filmographie de Tim Burton. Ses films sont conçus comme des boîtes à jouets rassemblant souvenirs, imagination et pièces intactes. Ces éléments constituent la base formelle des ré imaginations burtoniennes. Ils s'entremêlent au sein d'une même image, tout au long d'un fil narratif parfois ténu. Based on this observation, the present hypothesis argues that Burton’s filmography is a cinema of re imagination. The filmmaker himself uses this term to describe the conceptual approach to his films. This dissertation explains the choice of re imagination in regard to other pre existing concepts before analyzing the implications of re imagination in Tim Burton's filmography. His films are designed like toy chests in which memories, imagination, and intact pieces are collected. These elements establish the formal base of Tim Burton's re imaginings. They come together to form a single image by means an often tenuous narrative thread. By adopting cinematographic and filmic processes which look back to prior eras of the seventh art, and by bringing stories into the domain of the imagination through the intermediary of mental manifestations, Tim Burton builds a cinema that is anchored in the past, all while trying to restore the kingdom of childhood with what is left behind

Con le sue atmosfere macabre e fiabesche, Tim Burton è un regista che ha lasciato un'impronta peculiare nel cinema occidentale degli ultimi anni. I mondi da lui creati sono caratterizzati da luoghi e personaggi indimenticabili, come il villaggio di Halloween e Jack Skeleton in Nightmare Before Christmas. Quello che traspare da molte delle sue opere è una certa affinità tra il regista e i suoi personaggi. Quest'ultimi rivelano il ragazzino un po' strano che fu Burton, cresciuto nei sobborghi americani quasi stereotipati di Burbank, California. Molto spesso, infatti, i suoi eroi vengono considerati “diversi”, reietti di una società che li crede strani, a volte pericolosi. Tramite la sua sensibilità ed esperienza personale, Burton propone quindi il discorso sulla diversità e sulla normalità. In che modo il regista rappresenta questi due tipi di realtà, così distanti tra loro ma intrecciate allo stesso tempo? Spesso i suoi protagonisti, rinnegati o emarginati, sono considerati in una luce positiva, portatori di visione del mondo che va al di fuori degli stereotipi. Così facendo, il regista critica ciò che è “normale”, sottolineandone gli aspetti assurdi e le nevrosi che lo caratterizzano. Dopo aver analizzato la biografia del regista e le influenze che lo hanno formato, si cercherà di identificare il ruolo dell'outsider, figura a cui tutti i suoi personaggi fanno riferimento. Si analizzeranno quindi le loro carattristiche principali, per poi comprendere come essi si rapportino al mondo che li circonda.

This research conducts a narratological study of Tim Burton’s films in the light of the narrative theory of Vladimir Propp. It is to analyze in the oeuvre of Burton, analogous procedures to those of the wonderful tale such as described by Propp. It also pays attention to the matters that interconnect the Proppian wonderful world to the fantastic burthonian world. It seeks to understand how a reinterpretation in the cinematographic context of Tim Burton films create a connection with the morphological structure of the wonderful of V. Propp. The conducted literature reviews involve authoritative works on the fantastic cinema, the animation cinema in general and particularly the cinema of Tim Burton. The corpus of the research is composed by the Corpse Bride – 2005 of Tim Burton; The establishment of the corpus was based on the criterion of selection of the animation films that stand out in the oeuvre of Tim Burton. Methodologically, the research is bibliographical and comparative. The main theoretical reference is Propp's own narratological theory, which always seeks the wonderful in his works. This research also takes into consideration the masterful model work of Haroldo de Campos, Morphology of Macunaíma, which presents and reinterprets the proppian model. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that little research has been made on hybrid wonderful tale to the animation cinema. It is also proposing a new unfolding of the proppian semiology, turning it this time to the universe of visual discourse and digital manipulation
Esta pesquisa realiza um estudo narratológico em filmes de Tim Burton à luz da teoria narrativa de Vladimir Propp. Trata-se de analisar na obra de Burton, procedimentos análogos àqueles do conto maravilhoso tais como descritos por Propp.Atenta-se também para as pautas que interconectam o mundo maravilhosoproppiano ao mundo fantástico burthoniano. Busca-se entender como uma reinterpretação no contexto cinematográfico das películas de Tim Burton criam uma conexão com a estrutura morfológica do maravilhoso de V. Propp. A revisão bibliográfica efetuada aquienvolve trabalhos abalizados sobre o cinema fantástico, o cinema de animação em geral e o cinema de Tim Burton em particular. O corpus da pesquisa é composto pela obra cinematográfica A Noiva Cadáver – 2005 do diretor Tim Burton; O estabelecimento do corpus pautou-se pelo critério de seleção do filme de animação que despontam no conjunto da obra de Tim Burton. Metodologicamente, a pesquisa é bibliográfica e comparativa. O principal referencial teórico é a própria teoria narratológica de Propp que sempre busca o maravilhoso em suas obras. Este trabalho também leva em consideração o modelo da obra magistral de Haroldo de Campos, Morfologia do Macunaíma, que apresenta e reinterpreta o modelo proppiano. A relevância do trabalho está no fato de que poucas pesquisas foram realizadas sobre conto maravilhoso hibrido ao cinema de animação. Está também em propor um novo desdobramento da semiologia proppiana, voltando-a desta vez ao universo do discurso visual e da manipulação digital

Tim Burton is a North-American cineaste known by the movies Beetlejuice (1988), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), and Edward Scissorhands (1990). In 1997, Burton published his first literary work called The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories, a work which presents 23 poems illustrated by the author. Tim Burton’s cinematographic and literary works present some particular characteristics that exemplify the presence of a signature, which is meanly delineated by gothic elements, grotesque characteristics, and transtextual relationships. In this sense, this master’s research analyses the gothic and grotesque characteristics in the films Vincent (1982), Frankenweenie (1982), and Corpse Bride (2005); as well as in the book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories (1997).
Tim Burton é um cineasta norte-americano que se destacou pelos filmes Beetlejuice (1988), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) e Edward Scissorhands (1990). Em 1997, Burton publica seu primeiro trabalho literário: The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories, uma coletânea de 23 histórias, as quais são ilustradas pelo próprio autor. As produções de Burton, sejam elas cinematográficas ou literárias, possuem características que permitem a observação de uma assinatura, a qual é delineada, principalmente, pela presença do gótico, do grotesco e da transtextualidade. A presente dissertação discute o gótico e o grotesco em Tim Burton, analisando os curtas-metragens Vincent (1982), Frankenweenie (1982), o longametragem Corpse Bride (2005) e o livro The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories (1997).

Resumo: O presente trabalho tem em vista a realização de uma leitura crítica de O Triste Fim do Pequeno Menino Ostra e Outras Histórias, tradução de Márcio Suzuki da obra The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories, do diretor e gravurista Tim Burton. Para tanto, realizamos uma leitura crítica preliminar do livro dentro do contexto mais amplo de sua obra filmográfica. Após uma breve análise dos filmes, constatamos um movimento de ênfase na caracterização do personagem em sua obra filmográfica, além de uma série de traços que Burton imprime recorrentemente na construção de seus personagens, como uma espécie de assinatura. Tendo em vista essas constatações, partimos para uma leitura do livro de histórias em verso, com o intuito de verificar se também aí havia uma ênfase na caracterização do personagem e se essa assinatura se estendia também ao processo de construção dos personagens literários. Ao constatarmos que a construção de tais personagens se dava também no livro de forma semelhante, partimos então para uma leitura crítica da tradução brasileira, com o objetivo de verificar em que medida a leitura de que parte Suzuki para sua tradução se aproximava ou se distanciava da leitura que realizamos. Como essa análise do texto traduzido apontou para uma leitura diferente daquela que empreendemos, ainda que seja igualmente justificável, buscaremos sintetizar os princípios críticos de um novo projeto de tradução, nos termos concebidos pelo teórico francês Antoine Berman (1995), que tenha em vista os traços constitutivos da estética burtoniana nos termos do que constatamos.

O monstruoso normalmente é relacionado ao Mal, à crueldade, violência, morte e irracionalidade. O objetivo deste trabalho é reconfigurar a forma como o monstro e o feio são lembrados, pois é possível representá-los de forma diversa daquela cruel e fria que imediatamente nos ocorre. Consideramos que um dos grandes pioneiros para essa mudança, no que concerne ao cinema, seja o diretor hollywoodiano Tim Burton. Com um estilo bem peculiar, Burton faz uso de temas delicados para propor reflexões no público e mudanças de paradigmas. Além disso, ele mostra que é possível uma abordagem estética do feio com o objetivo de torná-lo mais agradável aos olhos. Também mostramos como o gênero do horror veio se aprimorando desde o início da história do cinema, objetivando sempre causar mais repulsa e medo no espectador, e com isso a atração que eles exercem sobre nós curiosamente só cresce a cada dia. Tal análise se dará à luz de autores como Morin, Nazário e Carroll. Posteriormente, as recorrências burtonianas são apontadas, tanto tematicamente quanto estilisticamente, fazendo, inclusive, o uso de fotografias e screenshots para facilitar o entendimento do leitor. O objetivo é mostrar, na prática, que o monstro nem sempre é o vilão, e que os filmes em que eles aparecem normalmente possuem metáforas e críticas fortes implícitas, o que faz valer estudos mais aprofundados sobre o gênero

Le cinéma de Tim Burton se reconnaît par des codes thématiques et des images si aisément identifiables que le nom du cinéaste a donné naissance à l’adjectif « burtonien ». Que signifie au juste ce qualificatif ? Cette thèse se propose de démontrer que si la signature de Tim Burton est reconnaissable entre toutes, c’est qu’elle porte l’héritage des gothiques littéraire et cinématographique. Burton s’en empare pour les transformer, adoptant une double stratégie d’adhésion et d’inversion des tropes du genre. Afin de définir ce gothique burtonien, nous étudions dans un premier temps le croisement entre l’humain et le monstrueux, un questionnement directement hérité du Frankenstein de Mary Shelley et de son adaptation éponyme par James Whale en 1931. Nous analysons ensuite la géographie de l’espace burtonien et sa représentation d’une société cruelle et machinique dont les personnages doivent s’extraire pour survivre. L’art émerge comme un moyen de survie ambivalent qui nous mène à considérer la création artistique du cinéaste lui-même, bâtie comme les grandes œuvres gothiques sur un brouillage des frontières, entre la vie et la mort, le passé et le présent, le rêve et la réalité
The films of Tim Burton can easily be recognized by their thematic codes and identifiable images so much so that the director’s very name has given birth to the adjective “Burtonian”. But what does it qualify exactly? This dissertation proposes to demonstrate that Burton’s signature is particularly recognizable because it inherits from gothic literature and film. Burton tackles and transforms gothic tropes using a double strategy of adherence and reversal. To define what we call the “Burtonian gothic”, we first study the crossing between the humane and the monstrous, an issue directly inherited from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and its film adaptation by James Whale in 1931. We analyze then the geography of the Burtonian landscape and its representation of a cruel and mechanical society from which the characters must escape to survive. Art emerges as an ambivalent means of survival which leads us to consider the artistic creation of the filmmaker himself, built like great gothic works on blurred frontiers, between life and death, past and present, dream and reality

The aim of the present dissertation is to show that Tim Burton’s imaginative universe can be considered as a remediation of a past tradition of grotesque and Gothic children’s book illustration which I have identified with the picturebooks realised by some illustrators who lived between the nineteenth and the twenty-first century. The first two chapters are meant to provide a historical and theoretical background to the development of the works specifically discussed in the last two chapters. At the beginning of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the young protagonist asks what is the use of a book without pictures or conversations. Turning Alice’s question upside down, in the first chapter I investigate what is the use of picturebooks. I start by tracing a brief history of picturebooks showing that it is strongly connected with the changes and improvements undergone by children’s literature and by book illustrations. Subsequently, I identify in the interaction between words and images the distinguishing feature of picturebooks. Text-picture interaction is what makes picturebooks original and unique, and what explains their usefulness in the development of both verbal and visual literacy and especially of the literacy of the imagination. The second chapter deals with the grotesque and the Gothic. Despite the fact that they are examined separately, I do not conceive the grotesque and the Gothic as two distinct entities and in this chapter I show that they share many elements and they can be considered as complementary. I especially pinpoint that in the beginning both the terms grotesque and Gothic are used in the artistic field and only later start to be applied also in literature. As far as the grotesque is concerned, I examine the etymology of the word and all its changes and developments over the centuries in order to identify its main features. The same procedure is then applied also to the analysis of the Gothic. This study is useful to make some remarks about the grotesque and the Gothic in children’s literature, thus introducing the examination of some grotesque and Gothic picturebooks. As a matter of fact, in the third chapter I take into consideration the following illustrators lived between the nineteenth and the twenty-first century: Alfred Crowquill, Heinrich Hoffmann, Edward Lear, Richard Dadd, John Tenniel, Wilhelm Busch, Arthur Burdett Frost, Charles Addams, Ronald Searle, Edward Gorey. These artists are examined in chronological order, according to their date of birth. For each of them I provide some biographical information and I analyse the most significant works. Both the illustrators and their picturebooks have been chosen according to the following criteria: - Their style is strongly characterised by the presence of grotesque and Gothic elements - Their imaginative universes may have influenced the Burtonesque style Tim Burton is the protagonist of the fourth and last chapter, where I examine his figure of “visual storyteller” in order to show that his whole artistic production can be considered as a remediation of the picturebooks analysed in the previous chapter in particular, and of the children’s literature in general. Taking into consideration his movies, his picturebooks and his drawings and sketches, which are the basis of his creative process, I identify the main features of the so-called "Burtonesque", providing evidence of its being at the same time an appropriation and a remediation. This is the reason why Burton’s imaginative universe succeeds in exploring the limitless possibilities of grotesque and Gothic picturebooks, respecting its main feature, that is the imaginative activity and the development of the literacy of imagination.

Uppsatsen handlar om hur karaktärer i utanförskap gestaltas i film med huvudfokus på Tim Burton (1958) och hans positiva freaks. Positiva freaks är karaktärer som anses vara annorlunda men som menar väl. Karaktärerna som analyseras i uppsatsen är Edward från Edward Scissorhands (1990), Victor från Corpse Bride (2005), Alice från Alice i Underlandet (2010) och Jake från Miss Peregrines Hem för Besynnerliga Barn (2016). Syftet med denna uppsats är att få en djupare förståelse för Tim Burtons freaks och hur de fungerar som ett nytt sätt att gestalta karaktärer för att vinna publikens sympati. I undersökningen har uppsatsen använt sig av en litteraturundersökning för att göra en analys av de ovannämnda filmerna och se hur Burton har gestaltat karaktärerna i sina filmer utifrån den ”yttre” och ”inre” karaktären. I slutdiskussionen så syns det tydligt att protagonisterna på ett eller annat sätt besitter egenskaper som skiljer dem från resten av omvärlden. Oavsett om det är fysiska abnormiteter eller psykiska så vinner de oftast publikens sympati. Det syns även tydligt att de har genomgått en förändring genom tiden där deras inre egenheter blir starkare men även osynliga. Man kan helt enkelt hävda att Burtons freaks har vandrat inåt.

O principal objetivo desta tese é demonstrar como um autor do século XIX influenciou uma narrativa cinematográfica contemporânea. Para o estudo da influência de Edgar Allan Poe sobre Tim Burton será utilizado um método de abordagem interdisciplinar que privilegia a relação inter-artes, associando Literatura e Cinema. Serão ainda tratados alguns contextos históricos e conceitos artístico-literários, como o Gótico e o Grotesco, que influenciaram a criação da obra do autor do séc. XIX e do cineasta contemporâneo. De forma a possibilitar uma adequada compreensão das obras ficcionais e cinematográficas em estudo, tornou-se necessário recorrer à abordagem destas tendências estético-literárias que desencadearam o seu surgimento; ABSTRACT: Projections of Edgar Allan Poe's Dark Romanticism in Tim Burton's Contemporary Gothic The main purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how a 19th century author influenced a contemporary cinematographic narrative. To study the influence of Edgar Allan Poe on Tim Burton, we will use an interdisciplinary approach method that privileges the relationship between different arts, combining Literature and Cinema. We will also select some historical contexts and artistic-literary concepts, such as the Gothic and the Grotesque, which influence the work of an author from the 19th century and a contemporary film director. In order to allow a complete understanding of the works to be studied, this kind of approach is the most adequate to associate these aestheticliterary tendencies that originated these fictional and cinematographic productions.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar, a la luz de la concepción bakhtiniana del lenguaje, el diálogo intersemiótico entre la novela del portugués José Saramago, As Intermitencias da morte (2005), y la animación producida por Tim Burton, A Noiva cadáver (2005). En él se examinarán, por medio de los estudios comparativos, La muerte carnavalizada en ambos textos con el fin de identificar cómo se produce El proceso de carnavalización. Así, el estudio no se detiene en la similitud temática de las obras, sino también en la postura ideológica de sus autores y la visión del mundo que se puede ver en los relatos de ficción. El trabajo propone un ejercicio analítico entre los sistemas de signos diferentes, en que será posible conocer lãs particularidades de cada texto artístico y sus modos de producción. Para ello, se utilizará como referencial bibliográfico, así como el principio dialógico bakhtiniano, los estudios, sobre todo, de Mikhail Bakhtin, sobre los conceptos de carnavalización y grotesco.
O presente trabalho visa a apresentar, à luz da concepção bakhtiniana de linguagem, o diálogo intersemiótico entre o romance do português José Saramago, As Intermitências da morte (2005), e a animação produzida por Tim Burton, A Noiva cadáver (2005). Examinar-se-á, por meio dos estudos comparados, a morte carnavalizada em ambos os textos, a fim de identificar como ocorre o processo de carnavalização. Desse modo, o estudo não se deterá apenas à semelhança temática das obras, mas, também, no posicionamento ideológico de seus autores e na visão de mundo que pode ser observada nas narrativas ficcionais. O trabalho propõe um exercício de análise entre diferentes sistemas sígnicos, em que será possível conhecer as especificidades de cada texto artístico, além de seus modos de produção. Para tanto, serão utilizados como referencial bibliográfico, além do princípio dialógico bakhtiniano, os estudos, sobretudo, de Mikhail Bakhtin acerca dos conceitos de carnavalização e grotesco.

A presente dissertação visa a analisar a forma como a temática da morte é abordada na produção para crianças e jovens; para tanto nosso trabalho se propõe à leitura de duas obras de campos narrativos diversos: um livro e um filme. Para realizar esse exercício, tomamos por fundamentos instrumentais dos Estudos Comparados de Literatura, perspectiva interdisciplinar que opera com a comparação e com os diálogos que podem ser estabelecidos entre diferentes literaturas, literaturas e outras artes e literatura e outros saberes. Serão utilizadas as relações estabelecidas entre literatura e outras artes, como o cinema, para focalizar como a morte vem sendo tratada na narrativa literária e fílmica. Assim, partiremos do conceito de literatura comparada, intertextualidade e dialogismo, fundamentais para estabelecer relações comparativas entre ambas as narrativas, demonstrando como os recursos próprios do cinema, bem como sua inter-relação de códigos e linguagens, concorrem para a construção de sentidos. O tema revelou-se interessante para o trabalho de pesquisa, tendo em vista que a morte é um ingrediente da vida humana, por isso, a escolha do corpus promoveu a divisão do estudo em dois momentos: a apresentação da morte na cultura ocidental e a representação da morte nas narrativas literária e fílmica para crianças e jovens. O corpus da pesquisa é composto pelas obras De morte! Um conto pagão do folclore cristão (1992), livro infantil escrito por Angela Lago e, A noiva cadáver (2005), filme produzido por Tim Burton.
This thesis aims to analyze how the theme of death is addressed in production for children and youth; for both our work proposes the reading of two works from different narrative fields: a book and a movie. To perform this exercise, we take for instrumental foundations of Literature Comparative Studies, interdisciplinary perspective that operates the comparison and dialogue that can be established between different literatures, literature and other arts and literature and other knowledge. The relationships established will be used between literature and other arts, such as cinema, to focus as death is being treated in literary and filmic narrative. So start from the concept of literature compared, intertextuality and dialogism, fundamental to establish comparative relations between the two narratives, demonstrating how the film\'s own resources as well as their interrelationship codes and languages, contribute to the construction of meaning. The theme has proved useful for research work, given that death is an ingredient of human life, so the corpus of choice promoted the study of the division into two phases: the presentation of death in Western culture and the representation of death in literary and filmic narratives for children and youth. The corpus of the research is composed of works from death! A pagan tale of Christian folklore (1992), children\'s book written by Angela Lago and The Corpse Bride (2005), a film produced by Tim Burton.

The aim of this study is to identify Aesthetics as a discipline pertaining to Philosophy, Modern Art and the Contemporary visualities that permeate the film image of Hollywood work. The aesthetic parallelism between the 1992 Tim Burton’s movie Batman Returns and the German Expressionism becomes evident as this study develops. It is through categories and in the identification of new aesthetic transitions which approximate works said modern, silent movies, of a production here considered post-modern. The analysis of the data follows methodology (Thompson, 2002) the Depth Hermenetics, considered in this paper for qualitative research.
Esse estudo tem como objetivo identificar a Estética, disciplina da Filosofia, a Arte Moderna e as visualidades contemporâneas que permeiam a imagem fílmica da obra hollywoodiana. Les œuvres de l'écrivain française Lydie Salvayre et des cinéastes américains Tim Burton et Terry Gilliam présentent une même dénonciation de la société du simulacre à travers une esthétique grotesque. Ils contestent dans leurs œuvres la pratique de la novlangue, celle du politiquement correct et le mélange de la réalité avec la fiction. Le fonctionnement dialectique du grotesque et sa capacité à procurer un vertige étonnant lui permet de rendre visible ces contradictions. La modification de l'imaginaire par la société de consommation et du simulacre les préoccupent particulièrement, car les auteurs observent que la transformation des signes en simples signifiants, dont le postmodernisme illustre le fonctionnement, conduisent l'individu à avoir un rapport déformé à la réalité, à la conscience historique et au symbole. Le grotesque est cette esthétique qui leur permet de former des mélanges dans leurs œuvres en préservant l'identité des signifiés et de restaurer ainsi un rapport à l'Histoire et au symbole. Le grotesque est cette esthétique qui permet le mélange sans équivalence, car elle donne à voir les contraires et leur confère du sens. Les auteurs lient leurs œuvres grotesques au mythe, cette fiction particulière qui permet d'avoir un rapport instinctif à la connaissance par le biais d'images particulièrement fortes. Le grotesque, dans sa dimension anthropologique et ontologique, réhabilite en définitive des fictions qui échappent aux problématiques du simulacre
The works of Lydie Salvayre, American movie directors Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam present a similar criticism of a society of simulacrum, by their use of the aesthetically grotesque. In their work, they question the use of newspeak, of the politically correct, and the mixing of reality and fiction. The dialectical working of the grotesque and its ability to produce an astonishing sense of vertigo enables it to bring out these contradictions. They are particularly concerned by the extent to which a society of consumption and simulacrum has modified the imaginary. These autors have observed that the transformation of signs into mere signifiers, something the workings of which are demonstrated in postmodernism, leads the individual to have a distorted relationship with reality, historical awareness and the symbol. The grotesque is that aesthetic form which allows them to make mixes in their work whilst preserving the meaning of the signified and which thereby allows them to restore a relationship to history and the symbol. The grotesque is that esthetic form which allows them to make mixes with no equivalent, since it shows opposites whilst conferring sense on them. The autors link their grotesque works to myth, that kind of fiction which enables us to have a instinctive relationship to knowledge by the means of particularly strong images. When all is said and done, the grotesque, in its anthropological and ontological dimension, reinstates a fiction which avoids the problems of simulacrum

Esta pesquisa busca analisar os elementos utilizados por Tim Burton para representar a Era Vitoriana através do figurino, meio de transporte e decoração. Trabalharemos também com a tradução em imagens do nonsense em sua adaptação fílmica Alice in Wonderland (2010). Nessa perspectiva, o presente trabalho resulta de um estudo comparativo entre o filme e a obra na qual se baseia, o cânone da literatura infantil Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland de Lewis Carroll (1865). Para tanto, faremos um cotejo entre as duas obras à luz das teorias de Elizabeth Sewell (2015), Wim Tigges, (1988) e Susan Stewart (1980) que alicerçam o gênero literário nonsense. Lançaremos mão da versão literária Lewis Carroll: The Complete Fully Illustrated Works de 1995 da editora Gramercy, contendo toda a obra de Lewis Carroll com ilustrações originais. Isso, a fim de viabilizar e facilitar a comparação com as figuras presentes no texto literário, quando necessário, para investigar se houve aproximação na representação visual feita pelo diretor.

The purpose of this research is to observe the traits of a difference, one that is built from the Batman adaptations of comics of the American publisher DC COMICS for film, made by directors Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan. The dissertation is precisely the dichotomy between Bruce Wayne, Gotham City and Batman-Gotham City in adaptations of the two filmmakers. For this work seeks to shape the profile of Batman and Bruce Wayne designed by filmmakers as part of the process that makes each of transpositions put in the foreground one or the other in their respective narratives. The immediate consequence of this process is the predominance of a certain look of Gotham City - in Tim Burton would be the Batman while in Christopher Nolan would be Bruce Wayne. The immediate implication of this difference lies in the way the villains are presented to Gotham City in the city of Burton that look falls on the Batman figure primarily; while in Nolan in Bruce Wayne Fig. In both cases, the eye defines the condition of both Batman as Bruce Wayne in relation to Gotham City and thus the bosses are presented according to the nature of one and the other. Different interweaving games between Bruce Wayne and Batman determine these narratives as the view that each of its directors assumes. So, what reverberates in adaptations is just the game fit the directors install when trying to blur the identity of who really is the hero - if Bruce or Batman - the stories they tell in the movies
O propósito desta pesquisa é observar os traços de uma diferença, aquela que se constrói a partir das adaptações de Batman, dos quadrinhos da editora norte-americana DC COMICS para o cinema, realizadas pelos diretores Tim Burton e Christopher Nolan. A dissertação trata precisamente da dicotomia entre Bruce Wayne-Gotham City e Batman-Gotham City nas adaptações dos dois cineastas. Para isso o trabalho procura modelar o perfil de Batman e Bruce Wayne desenhado pelos realizadores como parte do processo que faz com que cada uma das transposições ponha em primeiro plano um ou outro em suas respectivas narrativas. A consequência imediata desse processo é a predominância de um certo olhar sobre Gotham City – em Tim Burton seria o de Batman, enquanto em Christopher Nolan seria o de Bruce Wayne. A implicação imediata dessa diferença está na maneira como os vilões se apresentam à Gotham City: na cidade de Burton esse olhar recai sobre a figura de Batman primordialmente; enquanto na de Nolan na figura de Bruce Wayne. Nos dois casos, o olhar define a condição tanto de Batman quanto de Bruce Wayne em relação à Gotham City e, dessa forma, os vilões se apresentam segundo a natureza de um e do outro. Diferentes jogos de entrelaçamento entre Bruce Wayne e Batman determinam essas narrativas conforme o ponto de vista que cada um dos seus realizadores assume. Por isso, o que reverbera nas adaptações é justamente o jogo de encaixe que os diretores instalam ao tentar turvar a identidade de quem realmente é o herói – se Bruce ou se Batman – nas histórias que eles contam nos filmes.

Syftet med min uppsats har varit att undersöka mönster som binder samman normen, barnet och döden i Tim Burtons verssamling The melancholy death of Oyster boy and other stories. Detta gör jag med hjälp av en tematisk och komparativ metod för att undersöka motivet konflikten mellan barnet och samhället i boken i jämförelse med traditionell och subversiv barnlitteratur. Jag inleder med en översikt av hur konflikten mellan barnet och samhället sett ut i barnlitteratur, där drar jag även paralleller till Burtons bok. Därefter gör jag en analys av relationen mellan föräldrarna och barnen i boken i jämförelse med subversiv och traditionell barnlitteratur, för att visa på hur detta motiv kommer fram i Burtons bok. Jag går sedan över till att diskutera relationen till andra karaktärer, samt barnet och normen, för att sedan avsluta med en översikt av motivet döden i barnlitteratur och hur detta motiv framkommer i Burtons berättelser.

Uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka hur drömmen gestaltas i romanen Alice i Underlandet och Tim Burtons filmadaption från 2010. Tillvägagångssättet för att uppnå syftet är en intermedial analys kombinerat med teorier om drömmar i film samt Freuds teorier om drömmar i litteratur. Uppsatsens frågeställning är hur gränsen mellan dröm och verklighet är gestaltad, som besvaras genom en jämförelse mellan romanen och filmadaptionen. Gestaltningen av drömmen syns tydligast i kontrast till Alice vakna verklighet eftersom det då går att se vad som skiljer drömmen från verkligheten. Genom en enskild analys av romanen och filmen, samt en jämförande analys av båda medierna har uppsatsens slutsats fastställts. Slutsatsen är att filmens gestaltning av gränsen mellan dröm och verklighet består av en markerande passage mellan dröm och verklighet, medan romanen gestaltar gränsen mellan dröm och verklighet som en flytande övergång.  Romanen gestaltar övergången till drömvärlden främst genom text där Alice funderande blir en övergång till drömmandet. Filmen möjliggör även tolkningen att Underlandet finns på riktigt och därmed inte är en dröm.

Denna uppsats är en komparativ analys av Roald Dahls bok Kalle och chokladfabriken från 1964 med Mel Stuarts filmadaption från 1971 och Tim Burtons filmadaption från 2005. Syftet med uppsatsen är att se vilka möjliga likheter och skillnader som finns mellan karaktärerna och ifall de olika skillnaderna kan bero på tidsperioden verket skapades i. Analysen påvisar att det finns några tydliga skillnader som ändrar karaktärerna drastiskt och att detta bland annat kan kopplas till den tidsperiod som verket är gjord i. Således är det ingen stor skillnad i karaktärerna mellan Roald Dahls bok och Mel Stuarts filmadaption troligtvis då de skapats i samma tidsperiod. Budskapet i Burtons adaption har däremot blivit alternerat med mer fokus på tidens mer aktuella frågor såsom mental hälsa och familjerelationer och har därmed orsakat en stor förändring i karaktärerna Willy Wonka, Kalle Spann och Oompa-Loompianerna. Med dessa tre verk kan lärare didaktiskt undervisa eleverna om hur ett verk kan ändras när adaptioner sker för att passa samtiden. Dock får läraren påpeka att det inte alltid är självklart vad som är en produkt av tiden och vad som är en upphovsmans egen konststil.

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vad som skett i överföringen av Roald Dahls bok Kalle och chokladfabriken (1984) till filmatiseringen med samma namn regisserad av Tim Burton (2005). Det som mer specifikt fokuseras på i analysen är vad som skett med karaktärerna, om genren har påverkats och vad som har lagts till och tagits bort. Vidare diskuterar denna studie, med utgångspunkt i läroplan för grundskola, förskoleklass och fritidshem (2011), de värden och normer som framkommer i verken. För att se hur dessa skulle kunna ligga till grund för värdegrundskopplad undervisning i mellanstadiet. Detta har undersökts genom en komparativ analys av de båda verken. Det vi har kommit fram till är att en av karaktärerna i överföringen till film har fått en mer fördjupad funktion. Detta är något som påverkar filmens genre och därigenom också hela filmens budskap. Filmen har en tydlig psykologisk vinkel som inte finns med i boken. De andra karaktärerna är förhållandevis lika i adaptionen. De normbrytande och säregna karaktärsdragen gör detta till ett bra underlag för diskussion med elever i mellanstadiet.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att analysera mansbilden av karaktären Edward i filmen Edward Scissorhands (Tim Burton, 1990). Genom attstudera hans personlighet och egenskaper ur olika perspektiv, som kan uppfattas som både manligt och kvinnligt, har jag försökt att ta reda på vem denna utstickande karaktär är. Med hjälp av genusteorier och jämförelser av tidigare filmatiseringar som Ed Wood (Tim Burton, 1994), Sleepy Hollow (Tim Burton, 1999) och The cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Robert Weine, 1920) har jag även kunnat fördjupa mig i mansbilden av Edward. Jag har dessutom fokuserat kring Tim Burtons säregna filmskapande, men också kring stjärnskapet hos Johnny Depp, skådespelaren som Burton ofta samarbetar med. Edward Scissorhands har visat sig vara en man med både manliga och kvinnliga attribut, vilket gör honom till en icke stereotypisk man som saknar hjältemod och en muskulös kropp. Trots det så tyder inget på att han är mindre man bara för att han har mer eller mindre egenskaper som generellt uppfattas som manliga. Alla människor är olika, och besitterblandade egenskaper som kan tolkas som både maskulint och feminint. Det är just sådana unika personligheter som är intressanta för både Burton och Depp, vilket syns i deras samarbeten kring filmer som tidigare nämnda Ed Wood och Sleepy Hollow. Maskulinitet går aldrig att fastställa, och därmed kan inte heller mansbilden av Edward Scissorhands förklaras som om han har brist på manliga attribut. Han är bara en väldigt unik man som aldrig blev helt färdigställd.

The purpose of this essay is to study two film adaptations of the original Planet of the Apes novel and see what kind of relationship the two adaptations have with each other. The main question is if the secondary film adaptation is restricted by the primary and if the relationships between these two are as two separate adaptations or as a remake of an adaptation. What the results of the study show is that the secondary adaptation can not be seen as a remake even though it gets some of its inspiration from both the original story as well as the primary adaptation. The secondary adaptation is, however, restricted in what it can adapt due to the primary adaptation having the first pick, at least if the secondary adaptation wishes to be a whole new adaptation and not a remake of the primary. The study shows also that the fidelity in the secondary adaptation is not necessarily to either the original or the primary but to the knowledge the audience has about the Planet of the Apes universe which they have gathered from all of the important versions of the story. The essay also states that there is yet much to learn about the relationship between secondary and primary film adaptations which means that the field is still in need of exploration.

Adaptations cinématographiques d’Alice au pays des merveilles et De l’autre côté du miroir de Lewis Carroll: Analyse des transécritures de Walt Disney, Jan Švankmajer et Tim Burton observe comment trois versions cinématographiques différentes, provenant d’un même texte source, peuvent être singulières les unes par rapport aux autres. Le but de ce mémoire est d’analyser les transécritures de Walt Disney (1951), de Jan Švankmajer (1989) et de Tim Burton (2010) autant dans les changements narratifs que dans les ajouts faits par les réalisateurs qui personnalisent l’adaptation. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuierons sur la notion d’idée de Deleuze. Chacune des analyses est divisée selon: les idées de roman et de cinéma qui se « rencontrent », les ajouts et modifications des idées de roman, ainsi que les idées ayant été rejetés par l’adaptateur-cinéaste.

To do so, we rely on Deleuze’s notion of ideas. Every analyze is being divided by: the meeting of the novel’s ideas and the film’s ideas, by ideas that have been added or modified, and by ideas that were eliminated by the adaptor-filmmaker.

Film adaptations are becoming more popular and past critics and scholars have discussed films based on dramas and novels. However, few have explored the children’s literature genre. In discussing such a topic, it takes more than just debating whether the novel or book is better. A discussion on what elements have been maintained, removed, or added in such an adaptation has to be made along with its success or failure. With this in mind, Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and its two film adaptations will be explored along with an analysis of film adaptation theory to show that the first version of the novel succeeds and the second one fails.

El presente trabajo analiza la existencia de propuestas filmográficas con características siniestras y macabras, dentro de la estética y la narrativa, en el género cinematográfico de la animación, siendo Tim Burton su mayor exponente. Este género guarda una estrecha relación y está vinculado a un público considerado susceptible a contenido de dicha naturaleza, el público infantil. Sin embargo, muchos de los elementos macabros y siniestros aportan al desarrollo de la historia mostrando situaciones y personajes interesantes, reales y atractivos. Es así como se busca analizar dichos elementos para poder entender de dónde provienen y su aporte a la historia desde la estética y la narrativa; a través de la investigación descriptiva. Llegando a apreciar cómo esta propuesta, ejemplificada por Tim Burton, es una alternativa al universo de la animación, la cual mezcla elementos que no han sido explorados a profundidad en este género cinematográfico, pero que aportan nuevas perspectivas a los espectadores.
This investigation analyze the existence of filmographic proposals with sinister and macabre characteristics, related to the aesthetics and narrative, which can be found in the animation genre. Also, this investigation will be taking Tim Burton as it’s major expositor. This genre is associated with public that can be affected by this kind of content, minors. But a lot of these elements considered as macabre and sinister contribute to the development of the story showing all kinds of interesting, realistic and attractive situations and characters. For that reason, this research takes those elements to understand their origin and how they contribute to the story from the aesthetic and the narrative, using the descriptive research as a tool. Taking the director Tim Burton as a major expositor for these kind of animated films, he also shows it like an alternative in these universe, which took unexplored elements in these filmographic genre and add new perspectives to the viewers.

This doctoral program of research systematically estimated the global disease burden of diabetes-related foot disease (DFD), investigated factors contributing to the burden, and explored cost-effective ways to reduce the burden. Through four studies, this thesis identified DFD as a comparatively large and growing cause of global and national disease burden, identified several modifiable factors that reduce ulcer healing time in a real-world cohort, and provided novel economic evidence on the cost-effectiveness of implementing guideline-based care in clinical practice to potentially reduce future burdens globally. This research provides important new evidence, and a solid foundation for future research to reduce the burden.

Public health planning for influenza is based on morbidity and mortality estimates derived from statistical models. Lower than anticipated 2009 H1N1 pandemic death estimates have raised questions about the method. Examining the statistical method is important for future policy and program development. We compared the main methods of estimating influenza burden through a systematic literature review and by comparing statistical estimates of influenza-attributable burden at the Ottawa Hospital (TOH) to clinical estimates validated through chart review. We identified heterogeneity in methods used to estimate influenza-attributable mortality in the literature which resulted in within-season estimate variation by study. We found statistical estimates of influenza burden at TOH to be 4-8 times greater than clinically validated data. We also found no significant association between the outcomes examined and epidemic periods at TOH. The findings of this study suggest discordance between model estimates by model approach and between model estimates and validated findings. Examining reasons for these discordances should be pursued.

Bakgrunn: Demens er en av hovedårsakene til sykdom i eldre år. Pårørende til personer med demenser i risikofor å få omsorgsbelastninger, og en stor andel er i yrkesaktiv alder.Undersøkelser viser at pårørende kan komme i konsekvenser for arbeidsliv. Hensikt: Studiens hensikt var å undersøke og beskrive om, og i så fall hvordan pårørendes omsorg for personer med demens kan påvirkederes fungering i arbeidslivet. Videre,å sepå sammenhengen mellom pårørendes opplevelse av påvirkning og ulike karakteristika ved omsorgssituasjonen, samt beskrive hvordan de mestrer omsorgsutfordringene i arbeidstiden. Metode: Studien baseres på datafra spørreskjemaer fra 594 yrkesaktive pårørende som svarte på spørsmålet om omsorgsoppgavene påvirket deres fungering på arbeid. Dataene ble samlet inn i forbindelse med to tidligere norske tverrsnittsstudieri henholdsvis 2002-2004 og 2008-2009,og inkluderer både kvantitative og kvalitative data. Resultat: 37.5 % av de pårørendemed gjennomsnittsalder på 51 år og signifikant flere kvinner,svarte at omsorgen påvirket deres fungering i arbeidslivet. Den største gruppen (69.2 %) var døtre til en forelder med demens. Bosted til personen med demens ga ingen signifikant forskjell med hensyn til om pårørende opplevde påvirkning, mens derimot å bo sammen med personen med demens gjorde det. Situasjonen resulterte blant annet i telefoner fra personen med demens, praktiske omsorgs-oppgaverogoppfølging i forhold til tjenestetilbudet i arbeidstiden, samt ulike former for fravær fra arbeid. Pårørende opplevde stress og å komme i tidsklemme. Tilfredshet med tjenestetilbudog hjelp og støtte fra familie og venner syntes å ha en positiv effekt. Konklusjon: Studien viser at å være omsorgsgiver for en person med demens og samtidig yrkesaktiv kan ha en negativ påvirkning på fungering i arbeidslivet. Pårørende oppleveret dilemma mellomå mestre omsorgsoppgavene og samtidig opprettholde et optimalt yrkesaktivt liv
Background: Dementia is a major cause of illness in old age. Family carers for persons with dementia are at risk of experiencing burden of care. Many carers continue to work while providing care. Studies show that "time squeeze" induced by caring for an elderly family member might have negative consequences for the carers’employment. Aim: This study aimed to examine and describe whether caring for persons with dementia affects family carers’ ability to function at work. Furthermore,the aim of the study was to examine the relationship between various characteristics of the carer’s situation and functioning at work. It also describes how they cope with obligations both as carers and employees. Methods: The study is based on data from questionnaires completed by 594 of 614 employed family carers who responded to a question about how caring for a person with dementia affected ability to function at work. Data were collected in connection with two former Norwegian cross-sectional studies, conducted in 2002-2004 and 2008-2009.The present study includes both quantitative and qualitative data. Results: Among all respondents 37.5% reported that caring for a family member with dementia affects their ability to function at work. Mean age was 51 years and significantly more women and daughters formed the largest group (69.2%). The residence to the person with dementia (own home or nursing home)revealed no significant difference regarding the carers impact at work, whereas living together with the family member with dementia did. Impact factors included phone calls from the person with dementia, practical caring tasks, followingup on healthcare services, and different types of absence from work.The family carers experienced stress and lack of time. Satisfaction with health care services, as well as help and support from family and friends seemed to have a positive effect. Conclusion: This study shows that balancing caring for a person with dementiain combination with being profewssionally active may negatively affect the ability to function at work. The dilemma family carers experience between work and care giving obligations maybe difficult to manage while maintaining an optimal active working life.

Ny statistikk viser økende forekomst av aldersdemens blant eldre. Menn utgjør en økende gruppe omsorgsgivere. Disse mennene har fått relativt liten forskningsmessig oppmerksomhet, det finnes en begrenset mengde litteratur tilgjengelig om menn som omsorgsgivere for ektefeller med aldersdemens. Der er derfor viktig å gi dette feltet forskningsmessig oppmerksomhet, blant annet for å kunne gi helsepersonell kunnskap om denne gruppen. Med økt innsikt i mennenes opplevelse av sin situasjon vil de kunne gis bedre følelsesmessig og praktisk assistanse i omsorgsarbeidet sitt. Det ble gjennomført en studie med fokus på ektefeller av menn med demente ektefeller ved bruk av Grounded Theory som metode. Studien ble basert på opplevelsene til ni menn, seks av dem hadde omsorg for hjemmeboende ektefelle, de tre andre hadde flerårige erfaringer med å ha dement ektefelle hjemme men hadde nå sine ektefeller i sykehjem og fulgte dem opp der. Data ble samlet gjennom dybdeintervjuer tatt opp på bånd. Intervjuene ble analysert ved bruk av Grounded Theory. Det ble funnet fem hovedkategorier, mestring, ensomhet, lojalitet, sorg og tap av felleskap med ektefelle
Recent statistics reveal a growth in the incident of Alzheimer disease and related dementia amongst elderly. Males make up an increasing group of caregivers, yet little attention has been given to them as that, there is limited literature available on husbands as caregivers for wives with the disease. Therefore, the need to conduct research in the area of male caregivers is essential if nurses and other help personnel are to understand and provide appropriate support and care for male caregivers. A qualitative study which focused on the experience of husbands who are home caregivers of wives diagnosed with dementia was conducted using Grounded Theory as research method. The study was based on the experience of nine husbands, six of them were caregiving for their wives at home at the time of the interview, the others had their wives in an institutional setting after years of home caregiving. Data collected during in-dept tape recorded interviews with the participants was analysed using Grounded Theory. Five major categories themes emerged from the participants stories, coping methods, loneliness, grief, loyalty and loss of fellowship in relationship.

Climate change is the biggest threat to global public health of the 21st century and Australia is one of many affected countries. This thesis used time-series analysis to estimate the total mortality burden attributable to temperature exposure in the top five largest cities of Australia and applied Bayesian spatial analysis to investigate the spatial association between temperature and hospitalizations in Brisbane, Australia. The findings of this thesis add to increasing literature of temperature and human health and may have important implications for mitigating the negative health effects of climate change in Australia.

Lung cancer has become the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in China. The effect of ambient particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5μm or less (PM2.5) on lung cancer has received wide public attention. This thesis identified the spatial and temporal patterns and trends of lung cancer mortality among different subpopulations in China. The robust spatial and temporal regression models were used to assess the short- and long-term relationships between PM2.5 and lung cancer mortality. The findings will help policy-makers design more targeted and stringent PM2.5 control measures to curb lung cancer mortality in China.

The intention of this thesis is to identify and analyze the cat woman archetype as a contemporary extension of the transgressive witch archetype, which rampantly appears over the course of cinema history, working as a signifier of a patriarchal society's fear of autonomous and subversive women. The character of Catwoman is the ultimate representation for this archetype on grounds of her visibility, longevity, and ability to return again and again. More importantly, Catwoman and her sisterhood of cat women work against male creators as a means of female empowerment through trickery. Within this thesis, key films of varying genres are drawn from throughout cinema history and analyzed in order to demonstrate the intertextual network of characters that make up the cat woman archetype, and the importance of the Catwoman character in her many forms.

Technological advances during the past 30 years have dramatically improved survival rates for children with life-threatening conditions (preterm births, congenital anomalies, disease, or injury) resulting in children with special health care needs (CSHCN), children who have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition and who require health and related services beyond that required by children generally. There are approximately 10.2 million of these children in the United States or one in five households with a child with special health care needs. Care for these children is limited to home care, medical day care (Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care; P-PEC) or a long term care (LTC) facility. There is very limited research examining health outcomes of CSHCN and their families. The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of home care settings, P-PEC settings, and LTC settings on child health and functioning, family health and function, and health care service use of families with CSHCN. Eighty four CSHCN ages 2 to 21 years having a medically fragile or complex medical condition that required continual monitoring were enrolled with their parents/guardians. Interviews were conducted monthly for five months using the PedsQL TM Generic Core Module for child health and functioning, PedsQL TM Family Impact Module for family health and functioning, and Access to Care from the NS-CSHCN survey for health care services. Descriptive statistics, chi square, and ANCOVA were conducted to determine differences across care settings. Children in the P-PEC settings had a highest health care quality of life (HRQL) overall including physical and psychosocial functioning. Parents/guardians with CSHCN in LTC had the highest HRQL including having time and energy for a social life and employment. Parents/guardians with CSHCN in home care settings had the poorest HRQL including physical and psychosocial functioning with cognitive difficulties, difficulties with worry, communication, and daily activities. They had the fewest hours of employment and the most hours providing direct care for their children. Overall health care service use was the same across the care settings.

Erik Olof Burman, som disputerat 1872 på en boströmianskt präglad avhandling, efterträddes 1911 som professor i praktisk filosofi i Uppsala av sin adept Axel Hägerström. Denne kom att utveckla en materialistisk realism som bröt med Burmans och de närmaste föregångarnas subjektivism. Enligt vad han själv omvittnade, hade Hägerström inspirerats till filosofisk forskning genom att läsa Burmans skrift Om Kants kunskapslära (1884; Kk). I föreliggande studie undersöks dels om denna skrift innebär någon förskjutning av Burmans filosofi i realistisk riktning, dels om den påverkat utvecklingen av Hägerströms realism. Resultat: 1) Kk är väsentligen trogen den boströmianska metafysiken men innehåller formuleringar om rummet och tiden som kan tolkas objektivistiskt; 2) ingen specifik tanke i just Kk kan visas ha påverkat Hägerström; 3) Burmans betoning av verkligheten som logiskt bestämd, hans krav på systemisk enhet i kunskaps- och verklighetsteorin, och Kants avståndstagande från metafysisk spekulation påminner om Hägerström.
In 1872, Erik Olof Burman had defended a Boströmian idealistic dissertation in Uppsala. He was succeeded there in 1911 as professor of practical philosophy by his student Axel Hägerström, who was to develop a materialistic realism in contrast to the subjectivism of Burman and his predecessors. According to Hägerström’s own testimony, he had been inspired to take up philosophical research by reading Burman’s essay Om Kants kunskapslära (1884; ”Of Kant’s theory of knowledge”, Kk). In the present paper, an attempt is made at answering whether Burman’s essay on Kant represents any shift of Burman’s philosophy towards realism, and whether it has influenced Hägerström in that direction. Results: 1) Kk remains largely faithful to Boströmian metaphysics but contains expressions about space and time which may be interpreted in a more objectivistic manner; 2) no thought specifically from Kk can be shown to have influenced Hägerström; 3) Burman’s emphasis on reality as logical determination, his demand for systematic unity in the theory of knowledge and reality, and Kant’s rejection of metaphysical speculation are reminiscent of Hägerström.

Denna studie har haft som ambition att genom semistrukturerade intervjuer försöka belysa hur olika aspekter av mötet mellan socialarbetare vid Uppsalas Arbetsmarknadsförvaltning och klienter med utmattningssyndrom ser ut. Detta med bakgrund i att utmattningssyndrom ökat i Sverige de senaste fem åren. Uppsatsen tar avstamp i stämplingsteori, stigmateori och olika mötesmodeller, och maktförhållandet mellan socialarbetare och klient diskuteras och problematiseras. Dessutom vävs vad som utgör ett professionellt förhållningssätt gentemot klienten in i analys och diskussion, där empati, empowerment och klientdemokrati blir återkommande faktorer för vad som utgör det professionella förhållningssättet. Resultaten visar framförallt på att informanterna aktivt har funderat kring hur de ska bemöta klienter med utmattningssyndrom, samt att de flesta av dem i någon mån reflekterat kring fördomar kring utmattade personer. Majoriteten av informanterna var av åsikten att de hade färre fördomar om personer med utmattningssyndrom än allmänheten, samtidigt som någonting som kan tolkas som fördomar om utmattade framkom även i intervjuerna. Det tyder på att många av fördomarna är omedvetna. Det framgår också att informanterna är samstämmiga kring att samarbetet mellan Arbetsmarknadsförvaltningen och sjukvårdsapparaten lämnar mycket att önska. Eftersom studien omfattar tio personer kan inga långtgående slutsatser av studien dras, utan studien är mer att betrakta som en inblick i yrkesverksamma socialarbetares tankar om mötet med de klienter som har utmattningssyndrom. Studien är begränsad till socialarbetarna ifråga, men det hade varit intressant att ta del även av utmattade klienters upplevelser av mötet med socialarbetare. Upplevelsen av att möta socialtjänsten som person med utmattningssyndrom är den andra sidan av mötet, som vi önskar att antingen vi eller andra får tillfälle att undersöka i framtiden.

Conventional reliability analysis techniques are focused on the occurrence of failures over time. However, in certain situations where the occurrence of failures is tiny or almost null, the estimation of the quantities that describe the failure process is compromised. In this context the degradation models were developed, which have as experimental data not the failure, but some quality characteristic attached to it. Degradation analysis can provide information about the components lifetime distribution without actually observing failures. In this thesis we proposed different methodologies for degradation data based on the inverse Gaussian distribution. Initially, we introduced the inverse Gaussian deterioration rate model for degradation data and a study of its asymptotic properties with simulated data. We then proposed an inverse Gaussian process model with frailty as a feasible tool to explore the influence of unobserved covariates, and a comparative study with the traditional inverse Gaussian process based on simulated data was made. We also presented a mixture inverse Gaussian process model in burn-in tests, whose main interest is to determine the burn-in time and the optimal cutoff point that screen out the weak units from the normal ones in a production row, and a misspecification study was carried out with the Wiener and gamma processes. Finally, we considered a more flexible model with a set of cutoff points, wherein the misclassification probabilities are obtained by the exact method with the bivariate inverse Gaussian distribution or an approximate method based on copula theory. The application of the methodology was based on three real datasets in the literature: the degradation of LASER components, locomotive wheels and cracks in metals.
As técnicas convencionais de análise de confiabilidade são voltadas para a ocorrência de falhas ao longo do tempo. Contudo, em determinadas situações nas quais a ocorrência de falhas é pequena ou quase nula, a estimação das quantidades que descrevem os tempos de falha fica comprometida. Neste contexto foram desenvolvidos os modelos de degradação, que possuem como dado experimental não a falha, mas sim alguma característica mensurável a ela atrelada. A análise de degradação pode fornecer informações sobre a distribuição de vida dos componentes sem realmente observar falhas. Assim, nesta tese nós propusemos diferentes metodologias para dados de degradação baseados na distribuição gaussiana inversa. Inicialmente, nós introduzimos o modelo de taxa de deterioração gaussiana inversa para dados de degradação e um estudo de suas propriedades assintóticas com dados simulados. Em seguida, nós apresentamos um modelo de processo gaussiano inverso com fragilidade considerando que a fragilidade é uma boa ferramenta para explorar a influência de covariáveis não observadas, e um estudo comparativo com o processo gaussiano inverso usual baseado em dados simulados foi realizado. Também mostramos um modelo de mistura de processos gaussianos inversos em testes de burn-in, onde o principal interesse é determinar o tempo de burn-in e o ponto de corte ótimo para separar os itens bons dos itens ruins em uma linha de produção, e foi realizado um estudo de má especificação com os processos de Wiener e gamma. Por fim, nós consideramos um modelo mais flexível com um conjunto de pontos de corte, em que as probabilidades de má classificação são estimadas através do método exato com distribuição gaussiana inversa bivariada ou em um método aproximado baseado na teoria de cópulas. A aplicação da metodologia foi realizada com três conjuntos de dados reais de degradação de componentes de LASER, rodas de locomotivas e trincas em metais.
