A granulovirus isolated from Cryptophlebia leucotreta larvae was shown through restriction endonuclease analysis to be a novel strain (CrleGV-SA). No more than one isolate could be identified from a laboratory culture of C. leucotreta. However, a preliminary examination of restricted DNA profiles of isolates from different geographical regions indicated some minor differences. Septoria blight of celery (Apium graveolens) caused by Septoria apiicola is a common disease. This work dealt with the development of a simple forecast model to time fungicide application to manage the blight. Two studies were conducted to examine the effect of relative humidity (65, 88, 92, 96%, and wet) temperature (15, 20, 25, and 28 C) and exposure period (6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr) on spore production. Biological control was investigated as an alternative to conventional chemical control of late blight. Research presented in this dissertation describes pathogenicity studies and control measures for P. nicotianae on tobacco. Special attention is given to the population structure of P. nicotianae in South Africa. The implications of these genetic studies in breeding and selection programs against P. nicotianae were also evaluated.
