Resumen
Purpose: The paper presents empirical evidence of sustainable practices adopted by rural tourism stakeholders. It explores the concept and meaning of sustainable practices and what motivates rural tourism stakeholders to adopt sustainable tourism practices as well as recommendations to enhance sustainable rural tourism practices. Design/methodology/approach: This paper describes an exploratory qualitative research project designed to investigate sustainable tourism practices of the rural tourism stakeholders. An inductive approach was adopted to address the research objectives. Specifically, this paper focuses on individuals' subjectivity and understanding of sustainable tourism practices in terms of meaning, motivations, and areas of improvement. The respondents' opinions were collected through semi-structured interviews. A total of 29 rural tourism operators participated in the data collection from the two rural tourism associations in Sabah, Malaysia. The data collection was held at Kota Marudu and Kuala Penyu from April to May 2022. Findings: The findings revealed that sustainable tourism practices relate to conservation and preservation, economic benefits, collaboration and protection, environmental impact, future growth, awareness, knowledge, and improvement. Interestingly, the meaning of sustainable tourism practices is strongly connected to the term “fairness”, to competitive products and quality attractions, and to meeting tourists' needs. This implies the meaning of sustainable tourism practices is not limited to economic, environmental, and sociocultural impacts; it also relates to quality tourism products and the needs of tourists. Key drivers for sustainability practices include economic, social, environmental, and government support. Relevant approaches for improving sustainable rural tourism practices include greater participation and collaboration among rural tourism operators, conservation and preservation, destination uniqueness, long-term growth, and 3Rs practices (reduce, reuse, and recycle). Research limitations/implications: Findings implicate sustainable rural tourism destination management and the rural tourism stakeholders to adopt and enhance the sustainability of the rural sites and destination. It also extends the scope of existing literature on the meaning, motivation and sustainability practices of rural tourist destinations. Originality/value: This study focuses on the importance of sustainability in rural tourism in Sabah, Malaysia, an area on which limited empirical research has been done. The study provides an in-depth understanding of the meaning and drivers of sustainable practices from the rural tourism operators' perspectives. Additionally, it proposes sound strategies for sustainable rural tourism practices. Such practices and development are attributed to an individual's understanding of the concept of and motives for adopting sustainable development practices, government support, and core infrastructure. Finally, this study offers practical implications for sustainable development of rural tourism.

Resumen
Tourism is one of the greatest successful business activities in the world. Its success depends upon the success of a number of other sectors. The tourism industry doesn't manage the majority of products and experiences it sells. Tourism managers are transporting people to view natural features, cultural attractions, economic activities and lifestyles of people worldwide. Unlike other enterprises, tourism takes consumers to the product, not the products to the consumers.

Resumen
Several crucial concepts are integral to the successful implementation of sustainable tourism practices in Indonesia. Among these, Green Tourism, Community Based Tourism, and Local Empowerment stand out as pivotal frameworks. Green tourism has promise as an environmentally friendly offering, although it requires a deeper understanding of environmentally conscious advancement within the tourism sector. At present, difficulties remain in delineating the notion of sustainable tourism and in implement it in tourism destinations. This study is filling the gap of the existing research on sustainable tourism by providing recommendations to enhance environmental sustainability practices by focusing on Green Tourism, Community Based Tourism and Local Empowerment. This article aims to explore these concepts in depth and highlight the best practices associated with each one. This research employs a qualitative methodology, specifically employing an integrative literature review approach to investigate the implementation of green tourism in Indonesia. In conclusion, sustainable tourism implementation in Indonesia is a complex and multifaceted process. It involves the active participation of local communities, the development of sustainable policies and plans, and the promotion of a green economy. Government engagement and community involvement are crucial for the successful implementation of sustainable tourism. To comprehensively examine the role of stakeholders and prioritize variables crucial for devising strategies in sustainable tourism implementation, further research utilizing a quantitative approach is recommended. Additionally, it is imperative to test the concept of step-by-step local empowerment using quantitative methods to ensure its validity.

Resumen
Objective. The purpose of the article is to generalize and analyze the existing strategic guidelines and modern management practices for the sustainable tourism development, proposed by international organizations and associations. Methods. To achieve the goal, such research methods as literature review, substantive bibliometric analysis, data visualization were used. The review of international tourism organizations reports was used to identify, collect and analyze data on modern strategic guidelines and management practices for the sustainable tourism development, as well as their critical evaluation. Results. The initiatives of international tourism organizations to manage the sustainable tourism development are summarized and analyzed. It was determined that the most systematic approach to substantiation of strategic guidelines for the sustainable tourism development is inherent in the World Tourism Organization, which carries out its activities according to certain issues in seven directions, namely: increasing energy efficiency and use of renewable energy in hotels; monitoring the sustainable development of tourism at the destination level; resource-efficient use in tourism; simplification of tourist trips; stopping the loss of biodiversity and promoting the preservation and restoration of the environment; fight against climate change; launching a global plastic tourism initiative. The analysis and generalization of the existing strategic guidelines and modern management practices for the sustainable tourism development, proposed by international organizations and associations, allows us to conclude that the optimal recommendations for the sustainable tourism development should: 1) be aimed at the optimal use of environmental resources; 2) respect the socio-cultural authenticity of the host communities; 3) ensure viable, long-term economic operations, providing socio-economic benefits for all stakeholders.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide strategic recommendations for Indian hotel administrators for improving sustainability practices: environment, economic and social with respect to the supply chain members by analyzing performance dimensions and the importance attached to them. Design/methodology/approach Importance performance analysis is a tool to analyze the perception of top-level, middle-level and first-level managers in hotels. Questionnaire is developed to collect the hotel manager’s perceptions. The snowball sampling method is used for data collection. Findings The paper introduces specific sustainability practices, namely, environment, economic and social factors, at the interface of the tourism supply chain (TSC). This will allow the hotels to identify the importance and performance of various sustainability practices to achieve a long-term competitive advantage. The present work finds that the responding hotel managers have given highest importance to the sustainability practices within the organization and the hotel manager’s perception of sustainability practices in the TSC will vary with respect to the supply chain members. Research limitations/implications The effort has been made to capture specific sustainability practices across the supply chain. The paper reinstates the fact that sustainability practices are not firm specific and should be practiced at the supply chain interface. The data for the study were taken from focal organizations perspective which is the hotels. Practical implications Results provide the hotel administrators to develop appropriate strategies to improve their practices and functions by analyzing their strengths and weakness regarding their tangible and intangible assets. The identified sustainability practice attributes can act as a benchmark and drive the hotel industry toward possible cost-saving conditions by prioritizing the allocation of the resources while taking care of overall performance. Social implications Results will help the hotel administrators to identify the better sustainability practices which will reduce the negative effects and protect the Mother Nature. Originality/value The study included hotels/resorts from tourism locations: hill station, backwaters and coastal areas, specifically in the Indian context.

Resumen
Human beings depend on nature's resources to ensure their well-being and even to survive. The correct management of natural resources allows all people to have access to these goods of nature, in this way the theme of Ecosystem Services (ES) was developed, seeking to realize an appreciation of the benefits that human beings extract from nature. During this work, a participatory map was built together with the local community, pointing to ES in a Conservation Unit (UC). This CU, located in the northeast of Brazil, is home to several traditional and indigenous communities of fishermen who live in close connection with nature and traditional knowledge inherited by generations, it is home to fragments of the Atlantic Forest, a rich expanse of mangroves, the estuary of the Mamanguape River and beaches suitable for leisure. Among the methods and techniques used, we found tools such as observation, interviews, questionnaires and a manual participatory mapping with an intensive focus on the local community, this information was complemented with interviews with policy managers and a questionnaire addressed to tourists. The results identified that policy managers, tourists and the community cite different ES as the main ones, however, the main ES that support both the community's livelihood and tourist activities, the interactions between the provision ES with the cultural ES, as well as point to the loss of ES supply due to anthropic activities outside the traditional community. In conclusion, we highlight the importance that ES obtained from the estuary represent for the community and the role of traditional knowledge for the conservation of ES. Greater participation of public bodies is needed both to supervise and to carry out participatory planning that involves the three spheres of government and guarantees the well-being of communities.

Resumen
This article aims to evaluate tourism competition between countries by examining world tourism indices. Tourism indices are widely used tools to measure and compare the performance of the tourism industry. This study will discuss the Global Tourism Competitiveness Index, Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index and other important indices, explain the calculation methods of the indices and analyze the results. Sustainability, the economic contribution of tourism and future trends are also among the focuses of this article. This study will help us understand how tourism indices affect tourism competition between countries and predict future tourism trends. Major tourist destinations such as Turkey and the USA are making various efforts to promote sustainable tourism practices. This is an important step aimed at growing tourism sectors sustainably in the future. Countries such as Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran have the potential to offer different experiences for tourists with their cultural diversity and unique traditions. These countries have growth opportunities in the field of cultural tourism. Sustainable tourism practices are important for future growth and success for major tourist destinations. A major tourist destination like the USA aims to make its tourism industry more environmentally friendly by increasing its efforts on sustainability. Iran may not have been able to fully utilize its tourism potential due to regional and international political factors. Security concerns and political instability may limit tourist interest in Iran. As a result, these five countries have different tourism potentials and each offers unique attractions. Turkey, the USA and others aim to grow their tourism sectors in the future by promoting sustainable tourism practices. The competition between the countries examined reflects the development of tourism indices and the diversity of tourist destinations.

Resumen
This work aims to address whether knowing what dark tourism is (or not) impacts rumination on sadness, self-hatred, hostility, psychological vulnerability, and tourist wellbeing, as well as practices and motivations for dark tourism. A quantitative approach, based on a survey of 993 respondents, reveals that women and more educated participants know more about dark tourism; people who know what dark tourism is have visited more Holocaust museums, sites of human tragedy and natural disasters, concentration camps, and prisons; show more curiosity, need to learn and understand, and need to see morbid things. A model was found showing that gender, age, know/do not know dark tourism, and motivations (curiosity, the need to learn, the need to understand, and pleasure) explained 38.1% of a dark tourism practice index. Most findings also indicate that rumination on sadness, self-hatred, hostility, and psychological vulnerability are associated with darker practices. Greater wellbeing was not found in participants who knew in advance what dark tourism was. Interestingly, participants who visit tragic human sites present higher values in hostility and tourist wellbeing than those who do not. In summary, people who visit more dark places and score higher on negative personality characteristics have higher values of tourist wellbeing.

Resumen
The objective of this study was to investigate tourism business owners’ and operators’ perceptions of sustainable practices which would facilitate the success of their tourism businesses in the long term, as well as their perception of barriers to implementation of these sustainable practices. The study area was the North Carolina coastal counties where tourism is a major economic driver. Data were collected from 90 tourism businesses in 20 coastal counties in North Carolina. The study profiled the tourism business segments using a factor-cluster grouping approach that identified tourism business clusters. Three clusters were identified representing different levels of tourism business owners’ and operators’ perceptions of sustainable practices: Advocators, Accepters, and Anticipators. Comparative analyses were then conducted among these three groups to profile them based upon perceived barriers that prevent them from implementing sustainable practices. The results showed that prevalent barriers to implementing sustainable techniques were lack of funds, lack of financial incentives, complexity of implementation and cost. These findings could provide informed guidance to tourism entities when considering their sustainable actions, as well as provide data which may influence the role that state tourism officials play in advocating best practices that maintain and present tourism products in a sustainable manner.

Resumen
This research explores sustainable tourism, which aims to reduce the harmful environmental, social, and economic effects of travel while enhancing advantages for indigenous communities, economies, and ecosystems. Important elements of sustainable tourism involve environmentally conscious lodging, responsible travel, conserving water and energy, supporting community-based tourism, and promoting ethical wildlife tourism. Tour operators are essential in this process by securing sustainability certifications and providing educational initiatives to foster awareness of conservation efforts and responsible travel practices. Sustainable tourism also addresses issues like over-tourism, promoting off-season travel to ease pressure on popular destinations, reducing carbon emissions, and encouraging eco-friendly activities. The goal is to foster economic growth for local communities, preserve natural and cultural heritage, and confirm the responsible use of resources for the upcoming generations. In India, sustainable tourism is gaining traction, particularly in eco-tourism destinations like Kerala, Uttarakhand, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. National parks such as Jim Corbett and Kaziranga are adopting eco-friendly initiatives to protect wildlife and involve tourists in conservation. Community-based tourism programs in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka help support local communities by promoting cultural experiences, traditional crafts, and local customs. Despite challenges like overcrowding and infrastructure pressure, government has initiated ideologies such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) and Dekho Apna Desh encourage domestic tourism and responsible travel practices. There is a limited understanding of how aware students are of sustainable tourism practices and how they adopt them, despite their crucial part in influencing the future of the tourism segment. This study targets to evaluate the awareness and adoption of sustainable tourism practices among students in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and seeks to offer insights into how education and awareness can promote sustainable practices, ultimately impacting future tourism policies and strategies in India. Resumen
This study examines how tourists prioritize sustainable practices in Central Europe using the Kano model. With the growing importance of sustainability in tourism, there is limited research on how tourists evaluate different sustainable practices in this region. The objectives are to classify sustainable tourism practices into five Kano quality categories based on tourist preferences and to identify the key practices tourists prioritize when selecting destinations. A quantitative approach was used, surveying 250 tourists in Budapest, who rated 12 sustainable tourism practices. The data were analysed to categorize these practices as "Must-be," "One-dimensional," "Attractive," "Indifferent," or "Reverse." The results revealed that environmental conservation (M = 84.4%), wildlife-friendly tourism (M = 77.6%), and waste reduction (M = 75.2%) were the top priorities, classified as "Must-be" attributes, indicating their essential role in tourist satisfaction. In contrast, fair trade practices (68.8%) received lower priority. These findings suggest that tourists in Central Europe place more value on visible environmental sustainability efforts rather than ethical practices like fair trade. The study highlights the importance of focusing on environmental conservation, wildlife protection, and waste reduction in tourism strategies. By understanding these preferences, tourism stakeholders can develop strategies that align with tourists' priorities, supporting both sustainability and economic growth in the region.

Resumen
This study aims to explore key drivers of tourism sustainability practices and their impact on the sustainable competitive performance of the tourism accommodation industry. The study adopts an exploratory research design under qualitative research, using semi-structured interviewing of owners and managers of tourism accommodation firms using the TOE framework and RBV theory. The findings reveal that technological sustainability expertise, executive sustainability support, organizational resources and capability, service intermediary sustainability practices, collaborative innovation adoption capability, tourism sustainability regulatory policy, and sustainability practices perceived by residents are the key drivers of TSP. The outcomes also show that tourism sustainability practices have a positive impact on the SCP of accommodation firms. This study makes a theoretical contribution to the literature on tourism sustainability by exploring how TOE antecedents motivate firms to adopt sustainability practices as product innovation, which in turn enhance SCP. Also, this study provides strong backing for the premises of the TOE framework, and RBV theory offers valuable practical insights for managers and owners. This will aid in identifying the pivotal factors influencing TSP and SCP, enabling the implementation of innovative strategies to enhance firm competitiveness. Also, the research can help the government and policymakers formulate sustainable tourism policies to promote tourism innovations. The adoption of sustainable practices has been a focal point for both academic researchers and professionals in the tourism industry. However, there has been insufficient exploration of the TOE drivers that facilitate the integration of tourism sustainability within the context of TAFs in a developing country. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap in knowledge.

Resumen
This study investigates how green tourism affects the Hmong community in Lao Cai province, Vietnam. The results indicate that the environmental and sociocultural advantages of green tourism have a positive and noteworthy influence on the community's understanding of sustainable tourism practices. This increased awareness, in turn, encourages their dedication to sustainable tourism practices. However, the study did not establish a significant link between economic benefits and public perception, implying that the Hmong community places a higher value on cultural heritage conservation than financial gain. These findings underscore the importance of involving local communities in decision-making processes and ensuring that they obtain tangible benefits from participating in sustainable tourism initiatives. This study makes two significant contributions to knowledge. First, it provides a comprehensive understanding of how green tourism impacts local communities, specifically the Hmong community in Vietnam. Second, it highlights the critical role of community participation in sustainable tourism development. Local communities are essential in promoting and maintaining sustainable tourism practices. This research suggests that policymakers involve local communities in decision-making and ensure that they receive tangible benefits from engaging in sustainable tourism practices.

Resumen
This study explores the interrelationship between community attachment in AlUla Heritage City (located in Saudi Arabia) and tourists’ green consumption practices, testing support for green tourism development as a mediator. The old historical city of AlUla, a significant city experiencing ongoing preservation and tourism development, represents an adequate context for exploring the link between community attachment and green tourism practices. This study employs a quantitative approach, including surveys with 328 local residents of AlUla. A structural equation modeling partial least square (PLS-SEM) analysis is conducted to explore the indirect influence of community attachment on tourists’ green consumption through the mediating role of support for green tourism development. The findings indicated a positive path from community attachment in AlUla to tourists’ tendencies toward green consumption behavior. Moreover, the mediating effects of support for green tourism development suggested that a deep sense of community attachment improves tourists’ support for green practices in the tourism sector. This study adds to the extended body of the literature on place attachment and green tourism by emphasizing the significance of community place attachment in stimulating tourists’ green consumption practices. Several practical implications for policymakers seeking to promote green tourism practices in heritage cities like AlUla are explored from the study results.
