Texto completoThis doctoral thesis is intended to analyse in depth Miguel de Unamuno’s work, Teresa. Rimas de un poeta desconocido, presentadas y presentado por Miguel de Unamuno (1924), undoubtedly one of the unamunian works to which readers, scholars and literary critics less attention have devoted. The methodology followed in this research is easily observed in its own structure, divided in two well distinguished parts: the theoretical frame and the specific analysis of Teresa. The first part goes through the evolution of the concept of artistic imitation, until the most recent studies about the literary intertextuality, in attention that Teresa appears under the imitative pattern. Besides, the notion of style is considered: a fundamental principle, both for Unamuno’s thought and poetical conception, as in the linguistic and literary criticism trends that appeared in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. In the second part, the doctoral thesis is exclusively devoted to the analysis of Teresa: the redaction and reception process of the work, its different editions and the parts of the text (“Preface”, “Presentation”, “Poems”, “Notes”, “Farewell”). This revision of the structure of Teresa as a whole emphasizes the importance of its poetry, and justifies the very detailed commentary of each of the ninety-eight poems that make it up and the final epistle. Teresa is absolutely not a minor work of Unamuno; on the contrary, this work condenses the huge and complex thought of its author, and it gives a good account of Unamuno’s literary and essential anxieties.

Texto completoThis thesis has been developed in the frame of the general project Homero: texto y tradición, by the investigative group of Greek Literature of the Classic Philology Departament of the University of Murcia, and it has been directed by the Professor D. Mariano Valverde Sánchez. OBJECTIVES The meeting with Circe is one of the stages of Odysseus’ travel: this character is presented as a magician hostile to the sailors, but she finally helps them to continue their voyage. Homer’s poems had a great influence in European literary creation. In the plentiful homeric bibliography, some studies about the Circe episode have been published, but few of them bring a complete vision of Od. X, and none of them handles Spanish literature. We intend to do a wide and systematic research in the paht of the Circe episode from Homer to present Spanish literature. This course covers a large number and variety of treatments, and is necessary to delve into the theme’s vision of each recreation in relation to its context. One of the main purposes is to explain which features of the episode aroused the interest of author belonging to so varied times, ideologies and backgrounds. Circe’s character offers different facets -woman, sorcerer, lover-, and we point out which one dominates in the treatments, explaining its motives and consequences. METHODOLOGY The study is approached from the methodological field of philology and comparative literature. We do an analysis based on all the texts, delving into the distinctive features of each era and author and drawing conclusions. We offer our own translations of Greek and Latin texts. The investigation of the sources of the episode takes place according to the following phases: a. Greek literature. Homer, Apollonius, Plutarch and others. b. Latin literature. Virgil, Ovid and secondary references. c. The Medieval and Renaissance literature. Standing out Boethius, Dante and mythographical compendia. d. The Golden Age literature major treatments are Lope de Vega’s La Circe and Calderon’s El mayor encanto, amor and Los encantos de la Culpa. e. Contemporary literature. f. Comparative analysis of all the studied texts and conclusions. RESULTS Our survey highlights that the Circe episode has had a significant fortune for centuries. This fortune is determined by the homeric origin, but also by heroine’s attractive features. The Homeric adventure inspires new literary creations and also is the subject of philosophical speculations from different angles, always oscillating between poetry and philosophy. Each input incorporates different elements that result in a new creation each time. Regardless of the time, the author and the literary movement, a set of items are kept in the foreground -love, magic, mystery, metamorphosis-, although they receive very different treatments and interpretations. With the comparison of different approaches we can appreciate the mindset changes in socio-historical context regarding various issues related to the episode, such as the supernatural, the religion, the hero’s profile or the women’s regard.

Texto completoThe purpose of our investigation is to analyze the image of Paris forged in four Surrealist texts published between 1926-1928 in order to understand the Surrealist elements that allowed Julio Cortázar to forge his own image of the city in the novel Rayuela. Our analytical criteria are the importance of the regard and the promenade in the construction of the city as an interior and personal space. To understand the importance of the Surrealist production, it was necessary to visit the origins of Paris as a literary text in the late eitheenth century, the importance of the tradition noctámbule in the XIXth century, the incidences of Baudelaire's work regarding the modern Paris and the change of century that allowed the Surrealist movement to understand the city as an interior and psychic space. Through the establishment of certain criteria and images, we analyzed Paris in Cortázar's novel Rayuela as a Surrealist product, even if Cortázar himself never felt as as a Surrealist writer.

Texto completoIn the first part of the thesis a comparison is drawn between two metatheatrical plays from the end of the 18th century, Leandro Fernández de Moratín’s La comedia nueva and Sheridan’s The Critic. These plays are examined in the context of the theatrical controversies that took place during the 18th century in England and Spain. In the second part of the thesis the reasons for a disparity are explored; for even though the theatrical situation in both countries is very similar, in Spain the answer to a theatrical scene considered deplorable by the neoclassicists is presented in terms of a “reform”, which is moreover backed by the government. Nothing of the kind happens in England. In this part of the thesis, and starting from some capital critical works and the topics discussed by their authors, I look into the different value, weight or meaning of a few “backdrops” in Spanish and English criticism of the time: patriotism, religion, politics… This brings us to the differences in the historical circumstances of both countries that help to explain the absence of a “theatrical war” in England. Religion, for instance, is one factor that substantially modifies the symmetry of the parallelism that could initially be established between the theatrical polemics that take place in both countries. Owing to the role the Puritans had played in the history of England, virulent attacks on the theatre are slightly suspect there, and neither the Whig administration nor the Hanoverian monarchy considered actively intervening in a theatrical reform. But the Puritans and the middle classes, more prudish in their tastes than the audience of the Restoration, had enough weight to affect the course of the drama by creating an atmosphere out of which the sentimental comedy was born.

Texto completoThe Regiment of Princes, Giles of Rome has never been much studied. We are facing the Catalan edition of the textual translation of the Regiment of Princes, from the fourteenth century; this text has a remarkable tradition and was an important dissemination in our environment About the translator of the text in Catalan, Arnau Estanyol, we think that now we can clarify his born place and when he was born. Estanyol was a Carmelite nuns with a good academic training, he spend his time between “l’Estudi General” (university) from Girona and from Lleida. This man who had enough culture for deal with any difficult text and he could clarify some questions of difficult vocabulary in his famous “Explanació d’alguns vocables obscurs”. Nowadays it has arrived three manuscripts to us, we have had a good description and an affiliation and datation very deep work, it been made clear the importance of text. This text has been edited followed all the edition moderns criterias and it follows the rules of “Els Nostres Clàssics” and the IEC. The Regiment of Princes was writing with the intended to educate the Philip III of France’s son, Philip of Bell, and for to teach the time elementals principles: the monastic, the economic and the politic. Giles of Rome approaches to surprising things, he made speeches about the price character and to the human psychology. The Regiment tackles a fundamental subject: the king power. For Giles of Rome it isn’t exempt from the divine essence. Which is the power over the power? The king? The Poppe? Giles of Rome doesn’t bring face to face this two powers; all the powers are recognising in one only agent which is God; one idea, how we know, it took Francesc Eiximenis. Giles of Rome has an human dimension it isn’t easy to find in the medieval world, nor in itself, because in another works isn’t nothing merciful and charitable with the opposite sex. It can’t be catalogued as “feminist” -he knows very well which the each one role in the society is-, but it’s true that he have a different perspective respect to the people close to the price. Sometimes the author approaches us to the Sufism theory, that it has so much echo in the nowadays character psychology. It talk about Al-Farabi, and we wonder if the erudite mustn’t to know to much we know about this philosophy: the character psychology. What fascinate to Jaume d’Urgell and other contemporary princes so that this work had so many diffusion? Probably the title itself - a regiment of princes would captivate all the time nobility.
