The thesis deals with the various levels of meanings of the Chinese house and garden, and how the meanings operated in the context of traditional daily life. It is approached from the point of view of meaning in the context of daily life, using the activities and events of daily life described in The Dream of the Red Chamber as examples. An eighteenth century masterpiece, the book is regarded as authentically representing the life of the upper class of its time. In the book, the author uses the garden and house proper as the settings two different worlds of daily life activities of a family. The world in the house represents Confusian order, conforming with the social order, and that of the garden a poetic entity dominated by the Taoist ideal. The house was the microcosm of society, and the garden the microcosm of the universe. Reading beyond this level, we find one was built upon the demand of control over the individual; the other upon the desire of the individual for relief from tight control. The two worlds in the home environment represented the world of men and the world of nature. In the world of the house, i. e. the world of men, the individual had to deal with all kinds of human relationships, by following the social rules that were designed to sustain the hierarchical structure of the society. In the world of the garden, i.e. the world of the nature, the individual became one with the universe, by following the ultimate standards of Tao.

Sustainability is essential for survival on this planet but only focusing on the green aspects is not a comprehensive solution. The idea of Deep Beauty provides a more thorough and complete framework that is the answer to the sustainability problem of today. This framework is comprised of three levels: functional, typological and archetypal. These three levels combined, look at a building in terms of its functionality, its relevance to its region and the universal beauty that it must possess to exist long term. The union of aesthetics with function is what can save the planet. For this research, the focus of study is the traditional residential architecture of the city of Lahore, Pakistan, a city with a rich cultural background. Throughout history, Lahore has seen many transformations with respect to its architecture. Its architectural history can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization in the 3rd millennium BC, to a predominance of Buddhism, to a prevalence of Hinduism transformed further by the advent of Islam, the arrival of the British and the founding of the independent state of Pakistan. Currently, the housing trends are continuing to become more and more westernized in a pattern that is not fit for the region because of their inability to provide comfortable living environments and life-enriching spaces. In order to provide better housing solutions for the future, it is important that we look back at examples that have passed the test of time. This report discusses the present day and traditional housing trends of Lahore. With the purpose of improving the current residential designs, an analysis of a traditional house of Lahore has been performed to learn how it meets the criteria of Deep Beauty and sustainability. The results from this analysis provide design strategies that can be incorporated into present day houses to achieve sustainability. Based on these conclusions, a more sustainable design has been proposed for the modern house.

ikmaz in Antakya. It is a remarkable example of traditional houses dating back to 19th century in Antakya. The aim of this study is to prepare the restoration project of the building which is far too important for the city with its location, richness of its spatial and architectural elements, interventions have been done and provide to maintain its role in the city by re-functioning it. The thesis includes the detailed description of the present state of the site and the selected building, historical background of Antakya, comparative study and restitution scheme. Finally, the restoration project including the intervention decisions and a proposal for a new function are prepared according to the evaluation of the information gathered throughout the study. There are several steps to prepare the restoration project of a traditional building. The first step is the historical research of both the selected building and the city where it is located. It is important, as it constitutes a background for the study. In the second step of the project, the preparation of the complete graphical and verbal information of the building to the document the present conditions of it. Site survey is the base for this step. After all the information is gathered at the site, they are presented by graphical and verbal ways. Documentation includes the analyses of the building in various aspects like materials, construction technique and deformations. The third step is the comparative study of the building between the same period traditional Antakya houses. These analyses are not only important for the position of the building in Antakya but also form a base for the restitution project. The fourth step restitution consists of evaluation of traces to grasp the alterations done on the original building and thus it can be possible to establish the original scheme of the building. In the last step, the restoration project is prepared. It covers the interventions that should be applied to the building and the proposal for the new function.

l Asatekin July 2010, 329 pages The subject of thesis is to prepare the restoration project of a traditional Anatolian dwelling in Tokat. As being a representative of traditional historic background of Tokat, Ibrahim Sahin Dwelling is aimed to be rehabilitated at first and revitalized then by refunctioning. Within the context of the study, existing situation of the dwelling and its nearby environment is documented in detail. Graphical presentation of the dwelling is supported by verbal descriptions and analysis of the existing situation. The dwelling is then compared with other examples found at nearby site within its historical background. This information provided a basis for restitution stage and evaluated in restoration chapter then. The study is ended up with a restoration project including intervention decisions aiming both conservation of physical existence, revealing out of the authentic features of the dwelling and the sustainability of it within traditional historic framework by an assigned function.

structures, which form the major part of Turkey&rsquo
s cultural heritage, from an engineering point of view. On the other hand, the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame structures was not evaluated from an engineering perspective. For the aim of seismic resistance evaluation of traditional Ottoman timber frame houses, the TUBITAK (the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) project numbered 106M499 was carried out. Within this framework, 16 tests were carried out in the Structural Mechanics Laboratory of Middle East Technical University, by means of 8 1-1 scale timber frames of different geometrical configurations and material, carefully selected from traditional houses in Safranbolu, representing Ottoman timber frame &ldquo
himis&rdquo
technique. The frames were tested without and with different infill/covering types, and parameters that directly or indirectly indicate the behavior of a structure under earthquake loading were derived from the results obtained at the end of experimental work. In addition, capacity calculations were carried out for each test, using ATC-40 procedure. The results demonstrated that Ottoman timber frame &ldquo
himis&rdquo
houses are seismically resistant, and yet there are a number of important points that should be obeyed in their construction regarding size of diagonal elements, size and placement of openings, intervals between vertical studs, as well as connection details. It is also seen that certain infill/covering materials/methods are more advantageous than the others
for example, covering techniques results in a higher amount of maximum lateral load that the frame can bear under the same displacement. Infill with masonry blocks results in a larger increase in weight than in load bearing capacity. The conclusions drawn are intended to be used not only in the conservation of such structures but they are also expected to direct modern seismically resistant constructions.

Texto completoThis report will examine the problems and possibilities of building a luxurious modern residence in Pattaya, Thailand, incorporating the old traditional building styles of the wooden houses to an ecological house with a low demand for technology.
The client, B. Grimm Group, has recently set up a polo club in the vicinity of Pattaya and has requested a complete set of layouts regarding a planned housing area on the premises. The project includes a structure plan of the village area, perspectives, facades, building layouts and axonometric views of all house types, as well as garden plans. The written report works as a complement to the designs and explains the background to the final proposal.
The report also handles the building technology and construction process of building a traditional Thai house and briefly investigates the ecological aspects of building in Thailand.
