Jones, Andrew M. "Design and construction for traditional house building". Thesis, Aston University, 1990. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/14272/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study is concerned with quality and productivity aspects of traditional house building. The research focuses on these issues by concentrating on the services and finishing stages of the building process. These are work stages which have not been fully investigated in previous productivity related studies. The primary objective of the research is to promote an integrated design and construction led approach to traditional house building based on an original concept of 'development cycles'. This process involves the following: site monitoring; the analysis of work operations; implementing design and construction changes founded on unique information collected during site monitoring; and subsequent re-monitoring to measure and assess Ihe effect of change. A volume house building firm has been involved in this applied research and has allowed access to its sites for production monitoring purposes. The firm also assisted in design detailing for a small group of 'experimental' production houses where various design and construction changes were implemented. Results from the collaborative research have shown certain quality and productivity improvements to be possible using this approach, albeit on a limited scale at this early experimental stage. The improvements have been possible because an improved activity sampling technique, developed for, and employed by the study, has been able to describe why many quality and productivity related problems occur during site building work. Experience derived from the research has shown the following attributes to be important: positive attitudes towards innovation; effective communication; careful planning and organisation; and good coordination and control at site level. These are all essential aspects of quality led management and determine to a large extent the overall success of this approach. Future work recommendations must include a more widespread use of innovative practices so that further design and construction modifications can be made. By doing this, productivity can be improved, cost savings made and better quality afforded.

Resumen
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1992.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 73-75).
The thesis deals with the various levels of meanings of the Chinese house and garden, and how the meanings operated in the context of traditional daily life. It is approached from the point of view of meaning in the context of daily life, using the activities and events of daily life described in The Dream of the Red Chamber as examples. An eighteenth century masterpiece, the book is regarded as authentically representing the life of the upper class of its time. In the book, the author uses the garden and house proper as the settings two different worlds of daily life activities of a family. The world in the house represents Confusian order, conforming with the social order, and that of the garden a poetic entity dominated by the Taoist ideal. The house was the microcosm of society, and the garden the microcosm of the universe. Reading beyond this level, we find one was built upon the demand of control over the individual; the other upon the desire of the individual for relief from tight control. The two worlds in the home environment represented the world of men and the world of nature. In the world of the house, i. e. the world of men, the individual had to deal with all kinds of human relationships, by following the social rules that were designed to sustain the hierarchical structure of the society. In the world of the garden, i.e. the world of the nature, the individual became one with the universe, by following the ultimate standards of Tao.

Resumen

Gary J. Coates
Sustainability is essential for survival on this planet but only focusing on the green aspects is not a comprehensive solution. The idea of Deep Beauty provides a more thorough and complete framework that is the answer to the sustainability problem of today. This framework is comprised of three levels: functional, typological and archetypal. These three levels combined, look at a building in terms of its functionality, its relevance to its region and the universal beauty that it must possess to exist long term. The union of aesthetics with function is what can save the planet. For this research, the focus of study is the traditional residential architecture of the city of Lahore, Pakistan, a city with a rich cultural background. Throughout history, Lahore has seen many transformations with respect to its architecture. Its architectural history can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization in the 3rd millennium BC, to a predominance of Buddhism, to a prevalence of Hinduism transformed further by the advent of Islam, the arrival of the British and the founding of the independent state of Pakistan. Currently, the housing trends are continuing to become more and more westernized in a pattern that is not fit for the region because of their inability to provide comfortable living environments and life-enriching spaces. In order to provide better housing solutions for the future, it is important that we look back at examples that have passed the test of time. This report discusses the present day and traditional housing trends of Lahore. With the purpose of improving the current residential designs, an analysis of a traditional house of Lahore has been performed to learn how it meets the criteria of Deep Beauty and sustainability. The results from this analysis provide design strategies that can be incorporated into present day houses to achieve sustainability. Based on these conclusions, a more sustainable design has been proposed for the modern house.

Resumen
The subject of this thesis is House No: 1 in Zenginler District Bü

k Ç
ikmaz in Antakya. It is a remarkable example of traditional houses dating back to 19th century in Antakya. The aim of this study is to prepare the restoration project of the building which is far too important for the city with its location, richness of its spatial and architectural elements, interventions have been done and provide to maintain its role in the city by re-functioning it. The thesis includes the detailed description of the present state of the site and the selected building, historical background of Antakya, comparative study and restitution scheme. Finally, the restoration project including the intervention decisions and a proposal for a new function are prepared according to the evaluation of the information gathered throughout the study. There are several steps to prepare the restoration project of a traditional building. The first step is the historical research of both the selected building and the city where it is located. It is important, as it constitutes a background for the study. In the second step of the project, the preparation of the complete graphical and verbal information of the building to the document the present conditions of it. Site survey is the base for this step. After all the information is gathered at the site, they are presented by graphical and verbal ways. Documentation includes the analyses of the building in various aspects like materials, construction technique and deformations. The third step is the comparative study of the building between the same period traditional Antakya houses. These analyses are not only important for the position of the building in Antakya but also form a base for the restitution project. The fourth step restitution consists of evaluation of traces to grasp the alterations done on the original building and thus it can be possible to establish the original scheme of the building. In the last step, the restoration project is prepared. It covers the interventions that should be applied to the building and the proposal for the new function.

Resumen
This dissertation research was designed as two independent research studies. The first study, qualitative, and non-experimental, aimed to examine residents’, family members’, and staff members’ (stakeholders’) satisfaction with, and attitudes toward Green House living one month prior to moving and again at one and three months after moving. Focus groups were the primary method of data collection. Thirty residents and 40 staff members transitioned to one of three Green House homes beginning January, 2013. Data collected began in December, 2012. Following each focus group, tape recordings were transcribed, and coded. Using grounded theory and the constant comparative method of analysis, themes emerged. Pre-move focus group themes revealed that stakeholders were concerned about (a) the quality of care in a system using fewer staff members and (b) the challenges associated with adjusting to a new environment. Post-move focus group themes revealed that (a) stakeholders remained concerned about staffing levels; (b) residents’ had improvements in appetite, socializing, and ambulation; and (c) staff members struggled with autonomous work teams, but preferred the Green House model of care to that of a traditional nursing home. The final model reflects a synthesis of themes from which self-efficacy beliefs were hypothesized. Themes were also linked to existing gerontological theories: Person-Environment Fit, Place-Space, Thriving, and Personhood. The second study, designed to explore the construct validity of the Person-Centered Care Attitude Tool (Per-CCat), consisted of 42 Likert-type questions divided into four sections that align with person-centered care principles. Eighty-six employees of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community completed the survey; only 70 were analyzed due to missing data. Principal Components Analysis was the analytic approached used for these data. Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity (X2 = 2006.56, p = 0.000) and Keiser-Myers-Olkins measure of sampling adequacy (0.746) indicated that the data were factorable. The final four-factor 34-item solution aligned with the following person-centered care principals: resident autonomy, social interaction and community, work culture, and feelings toward work. Further validations studies of the Per-CCat are necessary. Given the trend in long-term care toward person-centered care, a validated survey will be useful for hiring and educating caregivers and other nursing home personnel.

Resumen
Tuti is an Island at the confluence of the Blue and the White Niles in Khartoum city, the capital of Sudan. The intention of this thesis is to design a bridge on the blue Nile which links the Contemporary world of Khartoum, the urban conurbation, to the Vernacular world of Tuti Island, the rural settlement. In addition, the project aims to provide a space that welcomes the bridge and to be a meeting plaza for both worlds. It is also intended to provide the Island with landmarks to be used as a point of reference. These landmarks from an integral part of the main theme running through the design from the edge of the Island to the center. This theme incorporates the essential design elements of the Islamic traditional house, which are the courtyard (the core of the house), scattered rooms which form the courtyard, and the wall that encloses the house. These landmarks are: the edge sit, representing the first landmark housing a threshold, a wall enclosing the courtyard, a market and a mosque which is the predominant building; a library, a plaza, the center plaza that accommodates a renovated buildings. The end result would be the linking the fast life of Khartoum to the quite and settled life of Tuti.

Aktas, Yasemin Didem. "Evaluation Of Seismic Resistance Of Traditional Ottoman Timber Frame Houses". Phd thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613716/index.pdf.

Texto completo
Resumen
The aim of this study is to evaluate the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame &ldquo
himis&rdquo
structures, which form the major part of Turkey&rsquo
s cultural heritage, from an engineering point of view. On the other hand, the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame structures was not evaluated from an engineering perspective. For the aim of seismic resistance evaluation of traditional Ottoman timber frame houses, the TUBITAK (the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) project numbered 106M499 was carried out. Within this framework, 16 tests were carried out in the Structural Mechanics Laboratory of Middle East Technical University, by means of 8 1-1 scale timber frames of different geometrical configurations and material, carefully selected from traditional houses in Safranbolu, representing Ottoman timber frame &ldquo
himis&rdquo
technique. The frames were tested without and with different infill/covering types, and parameters that directly or indirectly indicate the behavior of a structure under earthquake loading were derived from the results obtained at the end of experimental work. In addition, capacity calculations were carried out for each test, using ATC-40 procedure. The results demonstrated that Ottoman timber frame &ldquo
himis&rdquo
houses are seismically resistant, and yet there are a number of important points that should be obeyed in their construction regarding size of diagonal elements, size and placement of openings, intervals between vertical studs, as well as connection details. It is also seen that certain infill/covering materials/methods are more advantageous than the others
for example, covering techniques results in a higher amount of maximum lateral load that the frame can bear under the same displacement. Infill with masonry blocks results in a larger increase in weight than in load bearing capacity. The conclusions drawn are intended to be used not only in the conservation of such structures but they are also expected to direct modern seismically resistant constructions.

Resumen
This thesis studies the use of night ventilation as a passive cooling strategy for a traditional courtyard house in a hot dry climate. This was done by CFD simulation of the house and its surroundings, using weather data for Baghdad. The simulation was done for a large number of scenarios in which each represented a change in one of the house elements, such as courtyard and room dimensions, and in some cases included modern technologies such as a ceiling fan. The thesis suggests that performance should be calculated with the aid of a "Night Time Effectiveness Ratio" (NTER) and time constants. The findings show that building elements can change the performance to various degrees, that the airflow patterns inside the rooms change from day to night, and that the thermal conditions during the day depend more on the intensity of solar radiation than other factors. The results show that a courtyard house can ensure the thermal comfort for its residents. However, it needs some assistance from new techniques such as fans to keep the air quality inside the house within acceptable limits. The values for NTER from initial simulations are around ten, which indicate that night ventilation is not enough for cooling the building. However, the values drop to less than one by using a small and narrow courtyard with a two-level house and a gallery around the courtyard. Also, it is necessary to have a connection between the courtyard and alleyway at ground level in the night only and to cover the courtyard during the day. The windows have the largest role in deciding the performance of night ventilation. Ideally they should be small and tall, or preferably a pair of windows separated by a vertical distance and kept closed during the day. The effects of room dimension are clearer in affecting the thermal comfort more than improving the performance of night ventilation. The research also examines the indoor air quality and suggests ways to improve it. Some of the ways are traditional like the use of a wind catcher in ventilating the courtyard and the basement, and others are more modern like using an exhaust fan. Furthermore, it suggests an algorithm to control these ways and to introduce only a limited quantity of fresh air to avoid excessive warming. Suggestions for future work are given, including tests for more elements in the courtyard house and for longer duration runs. It would also be helpful to study the use of latent heat storage (e.g. phase change material) as an additional effective thermal mass.

Resumen
The choice of content and number of technologies that audiences view television with are increasingly expanding in the post-network era, leading those who use the medium to question its definition. In the wake of the Internet, online programming and streaming technologies, the death of television is frequently forecast.  Netflix’s 2013 release of their original online production House of Cards prompted popular media and trade journals alike to declare a revolution of television that would result in a paradigm shift of current production and viewing practices. House of Cards is esteemed for its distribution method and asserted advantages over traditional television by creators and executives surrounding the show, which calls for an examination of the specific practices that are dubbed ‘innovative’, as current television production practices have been put in place for years. The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the claims surrounding the series through production and textual analysis. Second-hand sources are used to gather evidentiary claims surrounding the production, and analyzed using historical poetics analysis with Jason Mittell’s complex television definitions in order to make comparisons of particular elements of the creation, production and distribution of House of Cards. Making these areas its starting point, this inquiry provokes larger questions of the future of online television programming in general, and its role in the death of television in particular.

Sulaiman, Mohd Sabere. "Challenges in the conservation of the Negeri Sembilan Traditional Malay House (NSTMH) and establishment of a conservation principles framework". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23552.

Texto completo
Resumen
The survival of vernacular architecture in the world, and particularly in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, is under threat due to rapid modernization, urbanization, socioeconomic transformation, loss of its characteristics resulting from changes and development, and misinterpretation of its typology as well as serious issues of abandonment. Most Negeri Sembilan traditional Malay houses (NSTMH), in some cases over one hundred years old, are unprotected and are becoming derelict. The vernacular value of these houses and their preservation for future generations are therefore threatened. To date, little research has been undertaken into the challenges posed in the conservation of NSTMH from the perspectives of house owners and professionals, and how the changing patterns of their form, fabric, and function have shaped the challenges of preserving them. To explore this from a more holistic approach, existing local heritage legislation that protects traditional Malay houses in particular or timber vernacular architecture in general, and international charters were reviewed, as also successful cases of preservation of similar heritage. This research employs a multi-method qualitative approach by examining as a purposive sample selected 19th-century long-roof-type NSTMHs. The research methods consisted of semi-structured interviews with house owners and conservation experts, on-site survey of the houses’ changing patterns of form, fabric, and function, as well as reviews of the conservation heritage legislation context (national/ local) and international charters. Interview data were analysed using thematic analysis, while the accepted concept model of cultural heritage was used for analysis of the patterns of changes in the cases examined. Documents were reviewed using template analysis. Findings from the research outline the main challenges that include a lack of appreciation and understanding of heritage among house owners, lack of traditional building skills, lack of government support as well as insufficient documentation. Nonetheless, there is no legislation in place at either a national or local level to protect the traditional Malay house. All of the findings were triangulated prior to the development of the initial framework and further expert validation was obtained to establish the final framework. This research makes a significant contribution in expanding the existing body of knowledge, through exploration of how the house owners understand, value, and appreciate heritage within their environment, in addition to including conservation experts’ perspectives in this regard. Moreover, the main contribution of this study is the provision of a Conservation Principles Framework for the NSTMH that may be used by house owners, conservation experts, officials, the Village Security & Development Committee, academics, and students as a form of guidance to the implementation of conservation works. It is also hoped that it may act as a starting point for the Negeri Sembilan state government to develop guidance aimed to safeguard this valuable Malaysian heritage.

Resumen
The aim of this study is to survey the construction techniques of the traditional houses in Nevsehir and to make a comprehensive study which will guide for the further conservation works. In this manner, the terms of construction techniques were understood and defined basically before they altered. To achieve this goal, firstly literature reviews were done about traditional houses in Turkey. General characteristics and history of the region as well as Cappadocia traditional houses were studied. The settlements which will be studied were chosen with the comprehensive field surveys. Meanwhile, the base drawings and maps of the settlements were gathered from municipalities and other public organizations of Nevsehir. In detailed field surveys, 20 houses were selected for surveying. After that, general architectural properties of the houses were investigated and measured drawings and sketches were drawn in detail. A code system which is special to this thesis was developed and applied to the drawings. Building parts were analyzed and defined from foundation to roof. Moreover, architectural elements were also described and classified according to their construction technique. In this survey, it is considered not only the construction technique but also the material and usage areas of building units. Frequency of the building units and their classifications can easily be seen on the drawings and tables. Thus, Nevsehir traditional houses were studied in detail and a general evaluation was done about the construction techniques and architectural features of Nevsehir.

Resumen
The objective of this thesis was to examine the structural order of traditional timber houses in Turkey and Japan. A comparative analysis, based on literature and a case study was made toestablish differences of traditional timber structures in the two countries by examining their spatial organization, spans and pitches of the timber components. Four Houses were chosen for survey from Safranbolu, Turkey and Gokayama, Japan. Following two points were appeared as a conclusion: in Turkey, the structural order was orientated to the room size while the room size was dictated by the structural order in Japan, and the second conclusion is that the space size was dictated by the human body proportion in Turkey and by the module based on the ken measurement in Japan. Consequently the number of the structural components required for the room was discussed as a third conclusion.

Resumen
This thesis describes an investigation of the traditional houses of the western region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (the Hedj=az region) which has aimed to identify the cultural core of the region's domestic architecture and its components, and the environmental elements that were most supportive of that core. Since these traditional houses are no longer the prevailing type of dwelling, and the lifestyles that operated in them have also vanished, the research drew upon the experience of elderly Hedj=az=i mu'allem=in (master-builders) who are among the few surviving traditional architects. As the descendents of many generations of builders, their knowledge covers a large span of the history of the craft, as well as familiarity with the social convictions of Hedj=az extending from the traditional period (1700s) until today. Further interviews with prominent families who had lived in traditional houses have also helped to reconstruct both the physical and socio-cultural processes of producing the traditional homes of Hedj=az. The study of the traditional Hedj=az=i house reveals that they each and collectively represented a pattern of relationships, the aim of which was to bring order, integrity and meaning to people's life - a series of connections between person, group, house and the world. The traditional Hedj=az=i's effort to make the home a sacred place served both to legitimise the group itself and its occupation of the land, for in this way the town at large, and the home within it, formed a part of divinely-ordered nature rather than being a merely human creation. The design and building processes provide a clear evidence of the desire for correspondence between man, universe and building, each of them a 'dwelling' in the true sense. This expressed the idea of a supreme unifying order in the universe which is embodied in man. It is this order that the traditional mu'allem has tried to grasp and interpret in his works. This central idea was reinforced by rituals, language and by the building itself. Various forms and metaphors were employed which served as devices to remind people of the primordial event from which all order was generated.

Resumen
Traditional architectural and urban artefacts are showed over the centuries as a powerful imprint of human actions and practices and are being developed on the basis of concrete socio-cultural factors and environmental rationalities. Spatial and morphological patterns of traditional environments have exceedingly evolved to fulfill and accomplish the social and cultural needs of the populace in their dialectical interplay with the surrounding environment. This relationship conceptualises the man-made environment, as the repository of meaning, in users‟ reciprocal relation with the surrounding environment. In the context of history, the human tends to dwell when experiencing the built environment as meaningful. Traditional contexts are highlighted as physical and spatial interpretations of human activities, skills, thoughts and resources creating identifiable and meaningful realms related to space/place, time and society. The study uncovers the process of the formation of the house and mahalla in order to shed light on how the built environment responds to inhabitants‟ socio-cultural determinants and everyday lives. It unfolds how changes in the nature of Iraqi society and its priorities affect the architecture of home and mahalla by reference to the impact of modernity with all its alien socio-cultural principles. This thesis focuses on the architecture of home and mahalla within the traditional core of Kadhimiya city and similar Iraqi socio-cultural contexts. At the macro analytical level, the research investigates the spatial and physical formation of the mahalla as a whole through detecting the socio-spatial aspects of its realms, and how its spontaneous form has responded to the socio-cultural aspects of the community in an integral pattern. At the micro level, the research will go deeper in the perception of the basic aspects of the individual and the family. It investigates how the traditional house reflects and satisfies the personal values of the individual, and achieves his socio-cultural beliefs and everyday life on the basis of inherent norms and conventions. In this vein, public, semi-public/private and private domains are investigated to highlight the mutual interplay between these spheres as key factors in understanding the architecture of the house and mahalla. The research discusses indigenous aspects and principles contained or embedded in the structure of the traditional environment, such as privacy, social solidarity and stability, neighbourliness and so on. It reveals insight into the male-female relationship in the social life of the traditional context, and how the position of women and their idle qualities impact the structure of the house and the hierarchical sequence and organisation of spaces. Identity, tradition, sustainability and everyday life are the main fields discussed with a specific end goal to outline and uncover the role of social factors, cultural beliefs and daily practices in the creation of this particular form. Building on these values, the research adopts an interpretive historical method in revealing the characters of the traditional environment referring to residents‟ habits, customs, rituals and traditions. Several approaches to the built and home environment are discussed for paving or detecting reliable one in the methodological inquiry within which many tools and methods have been utilised and used i.e. archival records, interviews, historical narratives, personal observation and photographic surveys. Data generated consists of photos, maps, interviewees‟ comments, analytical diagrams and historical and travellers‟ descriptions. Research findings indicate many of the inherent and underlying principles upon which the architecture of Iraqi traditional house depends. Within this context, the study has tried to unfold how the formation of the traditional house and the mahalla responded to the socio-cultural aspects of the community and the daily life of its members. Findings, concerning the design principles of the traditional mahalla, were realised as indigenous norms and standards embedded in the structure of society, which can be useful for architects, designers and planners to reconcile traditional and contemporary urban forms through the application of former rules and conventions in City‟s conservation or redevelopment plans. The study reveals that the traditional environment had less socio-cultural contradictions, active day-to-day practices and clear, identifiable and meaningful identity compared with contemporary built environments. Research findings, thus, lead to a set of relevant recommendations addressed to many of the community categories, architects, planners, stakeholders and those interested in this field. They aim to promote the impressive role of socio-cultural factors and strengthen users‟ competence in their physical and spatial settings for home. Moreover, research recommendations discuss how social factors, cultural values, beliefs, practices and rituals can be re-employed in our approach to achieving a more sustainable living environment. Recommendations relating to identity and tradition aim to draw attention and shed light on the significance of traditional built environments in the development of special identity, which played a big role in the sustainability of these contexts for centuries.

Zhu, Qi. "Shi in Architecture: the Efficacy of Traditional Chinese Doors". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27733.

Texto completo
Resumen
This dissertation explores the concept of shi manifested in traditional Chinese architecture by examining the efficacy of the traditional Chinese house doors. Three connotations of the concept of shi derived from different philosophical schools of thought during the Warring States Period: the advantageous shi, the authoritative shi and the self-so-doing shi, are re-engaged as the theoretical framework for this study. The three categories of shi correspondingly shed light on the understanding of the craftiness in architectural constructions, the embodied cultural meanings in building elements and the aesthetics achieved by the artful arrangement of building elements. This study also further reveals the essential nature of shi as weak and amorphous in parallel with the weak ontology proposed by Gianni Vattimo. It is this weak and amorphous nature of shi that results in the complexity, diversity and richness of traditional Chinese house doors. This new perspective of examining architecture through the lens of shi also provides a way for looking at the future development of Chinese architecture beyond the limitations of internationalism yet within the realm of a critical local modernity.

Hwang, Bor-ling. "The influence of the female on the architecture of the traditional Chinese house : the example of Taiwan in the nineteenth century". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20584.

Texto completo
Resumen
The conventional view of the development of the traditional Chinese house is that the architecture, as expressed through the planning, the construction and the utilisation of space is dominated by the male. Deference to the role of the father figure and the concept of lineage which he represented has been seen to be the expense of both the physiological and psychological needs of female members of the household. Whilst accepting that, at a superficial level, provision for female needs within the home was inadequate when compared to the male, this study challenges the view that Chinese domestic architecture was uninfluenced by either the practical or cultural roles of women within the home where they spent almost the whole of their time and were almost solely responsible for the control of domestic affairs. The study is set in the context of Taiwan in the 19th century at a time when the traditional values of mainland China were being strongly re-asserted by the island's immigrant community. During this period the house was re-established as the primary focus of social order and values and discrimination - as we would view it today - against women was at its most extreme. The study examines Taiwanese domestic architecture of the period from a female perspective and argues that male attitudes and reactions towards the female - especially in relation to chastity - which manifested itself in the spatial organisation of the house were so strong that the influence of the female was evident "in the negative", but was still real and potent.

Resumen
The thermal quality of the contemporary building tends to be deteriorated due to aesthetic and economic considerations. Cheap materials which are thermally inappropriate are still rising in new buildings. Actually, the architectural design has been changed. Hence, the orientation is poorly investigated. The interior height of the new buildings is defectively compared to those of traditional houses. In addition, the patio is replaced by a corridor and different parts have already become communicating. Accordingly, the heating and cooling space becomes more and more important. The traditional dwelling, in fact, has a bioclimatic architecture which provides naturally minimal comfort. In our work, we tend to exploit the REVIT software in the residential building simulation in Tunisia and to optimize the modern housing model. Following the REVIT validation of the obtained results and comparing them to TRNSYS and SPREADSHEET ASHRAE, we have already relied on them to assess both housing models (contemporary and traditional). Using REVIT, the evaluation results show that traditional housing are more efficient than contemporary ones particularly during summer period. Then, we optimize the modern models making use of the passive strategies of traditional bioclimatic architecture and the improvement measures in the previous investigations. Numerous tests have been generated applying REVIT software in order to determine various models of contemporary housing which are able to be integrated into the Mediterranean climate. In fact, these tests indicate that REVIT efficiency is based on RTS method in thermal simulation of residential buildings.

A Story of placement looks at displacement in Colombia during three different time periods: 529 years ago during colonization, today, and a speculative scenario in 10 years.  The project springs from traditional ecological knowledge developed by indigenous Colombian communities, and applies it to create a habitat proposal for a displaced community in Medellin.   How can we generate stories of placement in the near future?  The Kogi, Arhuaco, Kankuamo, and Wiwa descendants from the Taironas, have been living in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta after being displaced from the lowlands during the colonization. They have remained isolated from the western cultures preserving their knowing and being and living harmoniously with their territory. Colombia has today around 5.6 million people in a situation of displacement because of the armed conflict, natural disasters, or big land acquisitions by corporations. The project develops a progressive, sustainable, portable, and productive housing solution for communities in  a situation of displacement, inspired by indigenous communities from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the North of Colombia.

Resumen

This report will examine the problems and possibilities of building a luxurious modern residence in Pattaya, Thailand, incorporating the old traditional building styles of the wooden houses to an ecological house with a low demand for technology.

The client, B. Grimm Group, has recently set up a polo club in the vicinity of Pattaya and has requested a complete set of layouts regarding a planned housing area on the premises. The project includes a structure plan of the village area, perspectives, facades, building layouts and axonometric views of all house types, as well as garden plans. The written report works as a complement to the designs and explains the background to the final proposal.

The report also handles the building technology and construction process of building a traditional Thai house and briefly investigates the ecological aspects of building in Thailand.

Resumen
The thesis begins with an introductory chapter that explains the creative process, providing quotes from well-known poets and examples from my own personal history and ideas. Some of the creative concepts discussed are different manifestations of inspiration, such as the duende and the Muses. However, the act of creating a work of art--what actually occurs when an artist works--remains undiscovered. Every poet is part of the poetic tradition, yet she also strives to supersede that very tradition. In my poetry, I try to build on and deviate from the poetic tradition, while simultaneously representing events from my cultural and personal history. Twenty-nine poems follow the introduction. The poems included in this volume represent a contemporary writing style influenced by Romanticism and Modernism, apparent in nature imagery and ambiguity.

Resumen
The architecture in Bahrain is now lost between tradition and modernity. The drastic economical changes that occurred there had a large influence on the architecture of the Island. My thesis is a study of the changes that occurred to the architecture of Bahrain over the past thirty five years. It is also a design of a modern house in Bahrain that does not neglect the traditional architectural values of the country. In my work I focused on using geometry and geometrical proportions which in turn unifies the different parts of the house in harmony.

Akbar, Sameer. "Home and furniture : use and meaning of domestic space, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia". Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/383.

Texto completo
Resumen
Saudi society is undergoing dramatic social transformation, brought about by rapid industrialisation and massive urbanisation. In this period of haste, home environments have experienced significant changes. There was a strong temptation by architects to pick Western houses designs off-the-shelf and by occupants to furnish their houses with modern imported furniture. A surplus economy made such 'shopping' possible. But while the Saudi society was transforming it would be an over simplification to term it `Westernising'. The new home environment leads us to question: how does modern furniture relate to the present-day Saudi family? Does modern furniture hinder or support Saudis' cultural values and identity? The aim of this study is to identify the influence of the use and meaning of modern furniture on the home environment in Jeddah. The study examines the home environment as a system within which constituents communicate continuously to reach different stages of compatibility. People communicate to furniture by using it and shaping its form, and furniture communicates to people by conveying how it is used and what it stands for (meaning). A model of nine stages has been developed to identify the possible relationships between form, use and meaning. The model is then used to analyse r, the relationship between occupants and furniture in both the traditional and contemporary home environment. The methodology of the study is qualitative. The data collection includes in-depth interviews with older women who lived in the traditional houses of Jeddah and housewives in contemporary houses, house floor plans, site and museums visits, a literature review, statistical data of furniture and appliances imported to Saudi Arabia, and other data related to social changes in Saudi Arabia. It has been found that traditional furniture was highly compatible with use, values and occupants' expression of identity. Modern furniture was introduced mainly for its meaning function and was incompatible with cultural values. Because cultural values have resisted change, some traditional furniture is still used and new local furniture was developed. This has led to an increase in the number of rooms, as some are used to express identity while others are used to maintain activities driven by traditional values.
