Resumen
A national House of Traditional Leaders and provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders have been established in terms of Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1993. The role of Traditional leaders at provincial and national level in the National House of Traditional Leaders and the Provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders has not yet been clearly defined in South Africa. The National and Provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders experience various problems that hamper their functioning. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the significant role of the National House of Traditional Leaders and the Provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders as Constitutional institutions at national and provincial levels and to make proposals regarding their future role and functioning. It can be expected of Constitutional institutions to function properly and effectively. That is, however, not the case with the National House and the various provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders. In the rural areas are the poorest of the poor. This is a result not only of the former apartheid policy but also of a lack of interest by former governments to invest in rural areas. Attention and investment were focused mostly on the development of urban areas. People in rural areas had no voice. It should be ensured that their comments on legislation are for example taken seriously and are not discarded as a mere formality. The 1996 Constitution gives them this voice, but for the intended institutions to function properly, they must be effective. In this article a brief overview of the recognition of traditional institutions in the 1993 and 1996 Constitutions is given, whereafter the National House and Provinical Houses of Traditional Leaders are discussed with regard to their composition, role and the problems they experience in order to make recommendations with regard to their problems and future role.

Resumen
The Perak Malay Traditional houses are one of the relics that should be appreciated due to their space organization uniqueness which is not present in today's modern houses. The study of the house's space organization should highly be given attention for future generations to discern. The issue is there is minimal approach to appreciating the space organization and there is even no concern of its benefits if applied in the construction of modern houses today. Indeed, in an orientation before the construction of a residential house, the role of the environment including culture, way of life, especially the occupants of the residence are taken care of by a craftsman. Discussion between the host and the craftsman is an important aspect before the residence is established. Space requirements are the most in the architecture of a traditional Malay house, a space was born as a result of the activities of the society, by gender requirements in addition to the comfort of concern with the residential environment. Space requirements are common in almost every traditional Malay house in Malaysia but there are differences in orientation, climate, environment and local culture that trigger the use of space. The purpose of this study is to pass knowledge to the future generation in order to appreciate the relics house. For that, the objectives of this research are to analyse the spatial organization design and architecture of a traditional Malay house with Perak state based on space functional diversity through research on the role of space during the performance of activities. This paper employs qualitative research adapting the observation on-surrounding and the house's interior space. Besides, sketches on house spatial pattern, joinery detailing and joinery construction were some of the approaches that have been applied to obtain the data. To strengthen data acquisition, interviews with target groups like village heads or local house carpenters were made. The data were analyzed and the sketches were illustrated in diagrams to interpret the pattern of findings. The results strengthened the characteristics of the interior spatial organization for Perak house traditionally do influence the environment, society, cultural customs, beliefs and religions.

Resumen
The Paiwan, an Austronesian-speaking ethnic group, are one of sixteen Aborigines of Taiwan. This is an essay about the ethnography of traditional houses of the Paiwan. This is an essay about the ethnography of traditional houses of the Paiwan. I will describe structures, functions and construction process of traditional houses, and discuss briefly the social process and cultural meanings of houses. I have argued in an earlier paper that the Paiwan is a ‘house-based society’, in which social and cultural reproduction are bound up with the reproduction of houses. The goal of marriage is the mission of reproduction, and the ideal conjugal relationship is the one in which the couple share a common devotion to the reproduction of the house they created. In this paper I reconsider this point of view, and I propose that the parent-child relationship and the siblingship in the family are equally important. Because the traditional houses of the Paiwan are made of stone slabs, the process of making houses is quite long. In contrast, marriage may be short-lived and fragile. Even when the marriage relationship is terminated due to divorce, the process of building and maintaining a house will not stop, and this motivation could be maintained by the parent-child relationship and the siblingship.

Traditional Thai house architecture is a significant part the Thai culture and heritage. One unique attribute of traditional Thai house construction is the modular, pre-fabricated wood components, with non-permanent connections. This allows the house to be dissembled and reassembled in a new location without damage. This is a case study of Thai-style houses built and owned by six generations of the Usiri family. Their houses have been passed down from the first to subsequent generations. From only two Thai-style houses 130 years ago, there are now eleven houses as part of an expanding cultural inheritance. Keywords: cultural heritage; traditional house; preservation; living environment.eISSN 2398-4295 © 2018. House is one of the most basic needs of human life other than food and clothing. House comfort can be studied in house ergonomic. In House Ergonomic, research of the various factors that can be called decent house would have to meet the criteria of ergonomic house. Indonesia is a country with many different cultures, each of which has a typical traditional house for the region. In the days before globalization began, people of Indonesia had to build their own houses. The traditional house of the culture diversity is constructed without researching the science of ergonomics and modern architecture in theory, but is built from traditional local knowledge based on the philosophy and beliefs.

Resumen
Courtyard house, as one of oldest forms of housing tradition, is a remarkable form of residential architecture due to its attributes of naturally climate controlled spaces, spaces of peace and seclusion and as a central nucleus (a social space) around which domestic life revolves. In Lahore, visible transformation of housing trends has continued after independence (1947) with several emerging issues of growing population, rapid densification and exponentially rising land value. By 1960s and 70s, bungalow style of housing with a flavor of modernism inspired middle and upper middle income people to adopt modern life style. All these facts impelled courtyard style of housing into complete disuse. Researchers and designers are certainly aware of the need to cope with local climatic and energy crisis problems in residential architecture to enhance physical comfort of inhabitants which needs to analyze design and performance patterns of traditional courtyard houses, in comparison to modern detached houses. This research paper, through analysis of two local case studies in Lahore, explores how a courtyard house can be revived with minimal interventions to achieve climatically responsive houses that would be address adequately the climatic concerns. Findings on evolution and aspects of housing typologies (courtyard house, detached and semidetached houses), followed by comparative case studies analysis, and field investigation through questionnaire and interviews supplement research methodology for this paper.

Resumen
The existence of traditional houses in Banda Aceh has been extinguished in modern times. With globalization's impact, the traditional house connotates as ‘old house style,’ and thus, the house style is not up to date. A large number of house owners demolish them and reconstruct them with new modern houses. Despite that, it is approved that the traditional houses of Aceh were survived the earthquake that frequently hit the region. As Banda Aceh is one of the regions resided on Sumatran's segment, the region has a large number of earthquakes. This paper, which is part of the previous study on the thermal comfort of traditional and modern houses in Aceh, explores a historical architectural example that reveals local experiences that involve local wisdom and expertise. This paper focuses on a traditional house located in a modern housing neighborhood in Banda Aceh city. In doing this, the paper identifies how Acehnese ancestors, through their local knowledge, have constructed a traditional Acehnese house. The article also shows how its architectural form's construction techniques respond to the region's geographical condition. In constructing this study, interview and observation toward the building as primary data collections are conducted. Also, several written sources, as secondary data, related to an Acehnese traditional house, are reviewed. This paper shows that constructing a conventional house is a responsive architecture toward hot climate and earthquake. Therefore, this architectural building type with the local wisdom value's involvement is worthy of being applied and adapted in modern life.

Resumen
Abstract. It has been noticed that research is increasingly focused on exploring opportunities to use environmental devices of traditional origin to create more sustainable contemporary buildings. Unfortunately, this “neo-traditional trend” (Abdelsalam et al., 2013) is hindered by the performance of vernacular solutions, which are unable to meet the new needs of contemporary society. Advocates of this ideology believe that this situation is due to a lack of knowledge of these vernacular devices. From this point of view, this paper aims to establish a better knowledge of them for the purpose of improving their performance within contemporary buildings. Thus, it presents a comparison study between the traditional architecture represented by the Algiers Kasbah house and the M’zab valley house in Algeria. The choice of the case studies was made in light of the fact that notwithstanding the very opposite environmental contexts of each case study, they belong to the same typology of traditional houses called “house with wast ed dar”. In fact, they share several similar environmental features such as the patio and the terrace. Even though initially there appear to be many similarities, some aspects of these devices vary from one environmental context to another. Therefore, this paper investigates the urban layout in which the houses are built as well as the principles of design and building materials in order to explore the impact of the physical and climatic conditions, referred to in this article as the “geo-climatic environment”, on the environmental devices developed by each house. It compares the performance of these devices and how they respond to their geo-climatic environment in order to better understand their functioning mode which is the key of their successful adaptation to each environmental context and which could be the key to any future use of these vernacular devices in contemporary buildings.

Resumen
A considerable amount of energy is being consumed for heating and cooling indoor environments in order to provide thermal comfort. For older buildings located in the southern parts of Iran, particularly in Bushehr, many climatic and passive design strategies are being used to provide indoor thermal comfort. This architecture and these elements have been developed in response to unfavorable weather conditions. The current study aimed to identify those passive elements and evaluate indoor thermal comfort in older houses. To achieve these objectives, passive elements in main houses located in the ancient urban structure were first identified. Then, a house in the coastal belt, Tabib’s house, and another house inside the ancient urban structure, Nozari’s house, were selected for the purpose of field measurement. The results revealed that the passive techniques used in these older houses significantly provide sufficient indoor thermal conditions. The mean measured predicted mean vote (PMV) of Tabib’s rooms was 0.88 and the mean measured PMV of Nozari’s rooms was 0.91, which were in an acceptable range. The measured predicted percentage of dissatisfied of rooms in both houses were lower than 10%. The main factor in creating indoor thermal comfort in these houses was the natural ventilation and its availability in the selected houses.

Abstract- Wee Lewo traditional village is one of the cultural conservation areas that still hold the traditions and culture closely that applied from generation to generations. In Wee Lewo traditional houses village, the uniqueness of traditional houses found that their house use is not devoted to the needs of their users only, but also covers theological needs and traditional needs that surround their human relations horizontally and vertically. Tara manu traditional house was chosen because it has complete data and has a different arrangement of space than other traditional houses in Wee Lewo traditional village. The purpose of this study was to identify the meaning of Tara manu's home based on the cosmological aspects that exist in Sumba culture. The research method used in this study uses a descriptive-qualitative method by describing the analysis of objects based on a cosmology that is in Sumbanese culture, which is then explained through the existence of architectural elements in it. The data taken as an analysis material is physical data and object data that can be obtained through field surveys and related interviewees. The analysis process is carried out by examining all local activities and understanding of traditional houses which are then comprehensively studied using the cosmological theory of Sumba culture.Cosmological analysis in Sumba's culture of the architectural elements in the traditional Sumba house can be concluded by concluding that traditional houses are a gathering place for users both in families and in colonization; traditional houses are also a manifestation of Marapu who is always present among traditional home users; in the traditional house there is also a balance that is interconnected with each other but both cannot be separated. Resumen
Purpose – The control of the environmental impacts of buildings and constructions has certainly progressed in recent years in Europe, but very little in Algeria. The purpose of this paper is to identify and to introduce old environmental systems in the Algerian traditional house which could inspire designers to come up with new constructions with enhanced comfort. Design/methodology/approach – In this work, the authors used the “HQE” French certification grid to gauge the environmental implication of the vernacular architecture. Findings – Environmental systems in the traditional house respect the environment but have to be adapted to the current perception of comfort in order to be applied to the new architecture. Research limitations/implications – The main advantage is that the old environmental systems found in the Algerian traditional houses do not require any machinery to enhance the comfort. Thus they do not need any energy to be useful. Practical implications – As the Canadian Well inspired and influenced the architecture produced around the world to improve the comfort inside the houses, or as the thatched roof which inspired the vegetative roof used today to improve and regulate the energy consumption, the authors hope that some old systems used in the vernacular architecture will inspire architects or regular people who would like to enhance their comfort and life quality. Originality/value – Passive solutions used to improve comfort, with reduced energy consumption in houses, are increasingly sought all around the world. This work can play a part in introducing some environmental solutions used in the vernacular architecture which are nowadays left aside.

Resumen
The principal aim of this research is maladjustment of the traditional family house space concept to the requirements of the contemporary city and to the needs of an urban emancipated citizen. New patterns of every-day life seek their sanctuary in new living models, striving to re-evaluate the current patterns and determine spatial and social frame for the development of the contemporary family house adjusted to the urbanity of the 21st century town. The main aim is to define the elements and characteristics of contemporary urbane family house spatial structure by establishing mutual support between private and public domain of every-day life, throughout observation and analyses of spatial concept of the traditional urban family house, and also throughout the examination of its transformation during the first and second half of the 20th century, and by establishing the potential and final limits of its growth at the beginning of the 21st century. The first part of the analysis deals with transformation of the traditional house structure and determination of basic elements of the traditional urban house.

Traditional Sumba houses not only have meaning arising from the belief system, but also have technical solutions that are able to solve architectural problems arising from the shape of the building. The Mbatangu traditional house in Ratenggaro village, known as the tower house, is divided into 3 parts, namely the lower part (kali kambunga), the middle part or (uma dei), and the upper part (uma deta). These three parts have an integrated structural system from the foundation to the roof structure system so that this traditional house can stand in a unique shape and become part of the cultural heritage of the people of Southwest Sumba. Especially the Mbatangu traditional house on the coast, which has a roof which is much higher than other traditional houses in mountainous areas.

The natural mathematical abilities of humans have advanced civilizations. These abilities have been demonstrated in cultural heritage, especially traditional houses, which display evidence of an intuitive mathematics ability. Tribes around the world have built traditional houses with unique styles. The present study involved the collection of data from documentation, observation, and interview. The observations of several traditional buildings in Indonesia were based on camera images, aerial camera images, and documentation techniques. We first analyzed the images of some sample of the traditional houses in Indonesia using projective geometry and simple house theory and then formulated the definitions of building numbers and projective coordinates. The sample of the traditional houses is divided into two categories which are stilt houses and nonstilt house. The present article presents 7 types of simple houses, 21 building numbers, and 9 projective coordinates.

Resumen
The meaning of traditional Javanese house is as an expression of respect to creating harmonious relations with the numinous unity of supernatural environment, natural environment, and community. This is done in order to achieve safety in the life of Javanese people. To accommodate the demands of development needs, especially from the economic aspect, some houses experienced renovations in the form of adding commercial functions to their initial residential functions. As a case study, four houses which have been renovated were chosen. This study sought to reveal the effect of the renovation on the meaning of the house. The research begins by identifying the zones of each houses before renovation. Then the zones of each room were identified as a result of the renovation. The next step was to identify the suitability of the space zone due to renovation of the initial zone. Based on the suitability or incompatibility of the zone, the structuralism approach was used to interpret the effect of renovation on the meaning of the house. The results show that the renovation of the traditional house generally only affects the change on surface structure and not on the deep structure, thus, does not change its meaning. The wider the original house and the more residents living there, the higher the possibility of changing the meaning.

Resumen
The wooden house in Bucovina evolved over hundreds if not thousands of years of permutations and assimilations to reach, by the end of the XIXth century, a coherent and rich original style that was diffused throughout the region. With a name derived from the Slavic word buk that means beech, the region thus named land of beech trees has always been and continues to be a very rich source of wood. Unsurprisingly, this was the material of choice for the houses in the land. Constructed entirely in wood, including apparent beams to the interior and exterior and wood shingles for the roof, the traditional house in Bucovina elevated the craftsmanship of woodwork to the level of an art. This is obvious when analyzing the constructive details or the ornaments that adorn the windows or the columns of the porch. Similar to the houses of the Moldavian region, on which the style originates, the pattern for the house in Bucovina implies larger dimensions, due to the abundance of the material, larger windows, classical proportions and the use of specific decorative elements. The wooden houses evolved for thousands of years, so the people who built them got an empirical knowing of the material that helped them adopt in time the best measures to insure the durability of the constructions. This article analyses the style characteristics of the house in Bucovina and focuses on the means of constructions that ensured the durability of this dwellings. It is with the purpose of learning from a historical pattern that proved its durability in time and establishing the rules for constructing today with the same material and in the same climatic conditions, those of Bucovina.

<p class="Keywords">In contemporary houses in Iran, because of changes in the methods of designing and building houses, importance of entrance reduced to such level that now in contemporary houses entrance is just a door. Entrance correlates indoor safe space of house and outdoors. It`s importance lays in controlling entry, exit, territory and hierarchy. Since house owners were satisfied with traditional form of entrance, it is a good idea to learn from them in designing new entrances. The purpose of this research is to find a way for designing appropriate entrances for Iranian contemporary houses. To do this at first 40 traditional houses and 40 contemporary houses in Isfahan and Kashan were selected. These two cities are from margin of desert and the origin of traditional houses of Iran. Analysis showed that blockage of visual and phonic relation, creating a space between outdoor public space and indoor private space, creating access patterns to internal spaces and traits that separate in and out were the most significant properties of traditional entrances. All these traits are ignored in contemporary entrances. Suggestions made for design include creating public meeting space in yard and creating a separate entrance space for each house in apartments.</p>

<p>The spatial orgnisation of the domestic spaces is the manifestation of regional context. The differences in organisational quality of space reveal varied social structures. The paper aims at analysing the relationship of the prevailing social structure and the space organisation. This paper examines domestic spatial arrangements of the traditional <em>Pol</em> houses of Ahmedabad, India. In this paper, space syntax theory is used to examine the spatial morphology of the houses to map visibility, permeability, visual fields and movement pattern. Traditional <em>Pol </em>houses are distinctive in its character and generic in nature. The houses are evolved over the period of 400-500 years. After a sample of house layouts is analysed morphologically, the relationship of spatial organisation and social behavior is determined. Analysis results show that the traditional house layouts are evolved as per social conditions and offer better social interaction in present context. Hierarchy of spaces demarcates public to the private realm of the house. The flexible activity pattern makes the house more adaptable to the changing social conditions. The analysis will be valuable in the design process to safeguard the social fabric of the community.</p>

The Atoni tribe is a native of Timor, inhabiting the western and central parts of Timor Island. Its traditional house functions as a place for dwellings and for performing certain rituals. The form of the house is unique and contains rich meanings that could be studied. There are some Atoni traditional houses that are still maintained in Maslete Village, North Central Timor Regency in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. There are four types of Atoni traditional houses namely, Sonaf, Ume Kbubu, Lopo and Ume Knat/Kanaf. This research will focus on studying Sonaf Nis None, the house with the highest hierarchy in Maslete Village. It is qualitative research with the method of descriptive analysis and using Panofsky's approach of iconography that was conducted through two stages. The first stage was pre-iconography stage which was conducted to obtain the textual meaning and the second was the iconography stage, performed to discover the contextual meaning. Findings reveal that the traditional house of the Atoni Tribe has a rich meaning, conveying life values. The house was a manifestation of the outlook and philosophy of a harmonious life, articulated through the form of the house and its surrounding environment as a microcosm in accordance with the rules of the universe or and the wider world (macrocosm), by using a double pattern (pairs) in the architecture and interiors of the traditional house. The set of pairs as a whole is represented by the masculine and feminine nature of the fetomone couple (female-male), that have two opposing qualities but complement and enliven each other. These meanings have been the sources of inspiration for the design of today's homes. Their form and appearance may be modern, but the concept of the value presented is the continuity of Atoni's preserved cultural values.

Resumen
At the beginning of the 20th century, the terms genotype and phenotype in biology were adopted into architecture. In the science of architecture genotype was an abstract relational model that governs the arrangement of space, and the principle of organizing space while phenotype was a physical form of architecture. Genotype passed from generation to generation thus informing an identity in the community. The development of globalization and the environment can influence the identity of architectural diversity in each region. Vulnerability in the transformation of architectural forms can have an impact on identities that can survive or disappear. Malay traditional houses in West Kalimantan are on stilts and are located on the riverside. the sample used is a traditional Malay house around the palace in West Kalimantan with a sample of 8 cities and uses 69 sample houses. The method in this study uses the Levi Strauss structuralism and configuration space. External structure analysis has an informed of variation phenotype. through configuration space to finding archetypes. Then, continue to inner structure analysis to finding genotype from that archetype. The result from this study found the value and meanings of principle and arrangement space in traditional Malay house in West Kalimantan in the form of zoning of men and women as well as clean and dirty zones which have always been passed down from generation to generation.

Resumen
Abstract Iranian domestic tradition such as privacy and hospitality plays a significant role in shaping the Iranian traditional housing. However, studies on modern architecture have rarely focused on the house architecture, which has been adapted based on domestic tradition. The aim of this study is to understand how some features of local traditions, like privacy and hospitality, influenced housing development during the modernization period in Tehran. To this end, through a qualitative approach and data collection methods, this study identifies traditional values in modern housing. By categorizing the new house typology into detached houses, row houses, and high-rise apartments, the study discovers how architecture enables the consideration of privacy and hospitality in the physical form of modern houses. As a result, the new organization partly belonged to the traditional architecture and partly became unique as an Iranian modern house.

AbstractThis study aims to explain (1) the form of a traditional house made of bamboo in Makassar culture; (2) the components of the traditional houses made of bamboo and their respective functions; and (3) socio-cultural dimensions of the shape and structure traditional house constructed of bamboo in Makassar culture. To discuss these problems, we used the Saussure’s Structural Linguistics approach (semiology) and Levi Strauss’ Structural Anthropology. Both are elaborated into cultural semiotics. The data collection methods used were field surveys (observation) accompanied by technical documentation, interviews, and records. Data were analyzed qualitatively. Results of the research indicate that the traditional house form made of bamboo in Makassar culture is generally divided into three parts, either vertically or horizontally. Vertically, the upper part is called pammakkang ‘attic’; the middle part is called kale ballak ‘house body’; and the bottom is called siring ‘underneath.’ Horizontally, the front is called paddaserang ri dallekang ‘vestibule’; the middle section is called paddaserang ri tangnga ‘living room’; the backside is called paddaserang ri boko ‘back room.’ The components of the upper, middle, and lower houses show opposition to each other. However, these components are logically related and related to one another so as to form a meaningful social and cultural construction. The shape and structure of traditional houses in Makassar culture is influenced by socioeconomic and socio-cultural factors (cosmology, belief, and social stratification).

From the architectural drawing top to bottom, both houses show the same structure that is identical to the human body; head at the top, followed by the body, and feet at the bottom. However, the comparative study shows that each area represents a different meaning. The circulation of the house is also different, while the Balinese house is started with feet and continued to body and head area. Simultaneously, the Javanese house is started with the head, then continued to body, and feet area.

Resumen
The main considerations of building some new-type rural houses in Yinchuan are to improve indoor thermal environment and to reduce heating energy consumption by passive solar use and high-insulation envelope. Two houses were measured, a traditional one with adobe walls and a wooden roof, and a newly-built one with straw-bale insulation. Results show: (1) the linear layout of the traditional house leads to a higher heating energy consumption than the new one with climatic buffers; (2) the new house with straw-bale bricks have better thermal insulation performance than the traditional one with adobe wall; (3) lacking thermal storage is one of the main causes of larger indoor temperature fluctuation in the new house; (4) as a traditional partial interval heating mode, the “Kang”(a bed-stove made of bricks or fired clay) in the bedroom uses energy efficiently and improves the indoor thermal comfort.
