Resumen
Being a collegiate student athlete is known to be more difficult and hindering on grade point averages then being the typical full-time student. However, it is also thought that being a part of a team can help improve communication skills and thus, assist in receiving a job or simply be more organized in life’s day to day activities. This study surveyed alumni and current members of the University of Tennessee at Martin Rodeo Team on their views of how being a student athlete affected their college experience. In this survey, 77 participants were asked questions about the social, academic, and athletic views on being a student athlete at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Another extension to this survey is to show the positive and/or negative effects athletic teams bring a university. This survey questioned athletes on why they chose the university and if they if they perceived being part of the team helped them succeed in future careers. The study gave insight on how student athletes experience college and how universities can help improve the student athlete experience. The study revealed that rodeo had a positive impact on student time management skills and ability to work with others. Results show that a majority of survey participants had a positive and valuable experience being a student athlete at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Resumen
This study was conducted from the fall of 2014 until the fall of 2016 with the purpose of exploring the common traits found in successful applicants to veterinary school. The study sought to answer the research question, “What should a student who wishes to become a veterinarian focus on and engage in today to ensure they are on a pathway to success in this profession?” A survey was distributed to students in pre-veterinary classes at the University of Tennessee at Martin to gather data with the intention of determining common traits of certain variables. The categories in the survey were general information, career goals, expectations, and academic or personal skills. Once the surveys were returned, data was calculated in Microsoft Excel and compared with similar statistics in the veterinary field. Results showed that 84.5% of the students intend to apply to veterinary school. Additionally, 59.2% either grew up on a farm or have worked on a farm before and 64.1% had work experience at a veterinary clinic. When considering involvement in a youth leadership organization, 79.6% indicated that they were a part of at least one at some point prior to their completion of the survey. Eighty percent of veterinary schools indicate they place a stronger emphasis on experience over strictly academic performance. Therefore, future applicants should compare their qualities with what veterinary school committees look for in candidates to determine whether they are on a pathway toward success in this field of study.

Resumen
e16084 Background: Data is limited regarding outcomes in patients with RCC with positive surgical margins. We sought to evaluate the impact of margin status after radical nephrectomy (RN) on relapse free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted evaluating patients with RCC having undergone RN at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, between January 2009 and December 2013. Patients were identified from the tumor registry at this institution, and IRB approval obtained. Patient and tumor characteristics and survival were analyzed by GraphPad Prism, Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS. Results: 156 patients that underwent RN for RCC were identified; 12 patients (7.7%) had positive margins and 144 had negative margins. Mediation duration of follow-up was 3.4 years. 5 of 12 patients with positive margins relapsed, versus 20 of 144 with negative margins (41.7% v. 13.9%, p = 0.022) with a RR of 3.10 (95% CI 1.417-6.799). Among those who relapsed, there was a statistically significant difference in time to relapse between patients with positive and negative margins (mean number of days to relapse 275 versus 621, respectively, with p = 0.038). On multivariate analysis of age, gender, ethnicity, laterality, tumor histology, margin status, and tumor size, margin status was not a statistically significant determinant of OS at 1, 3, and 5 years (p = 0.051, 0.124 and 0.185 respectively) or RFS at 1, 3, and 5 years (p = 0.372, 0.271 and 0.242 respectively). Pearson correlation analysis showed significant correlation between tumor size and margin status, R = 0.478, p < 0.001. Conclusions: Positive margins were associated with earlier time to relapse among patients following RN. However, in multivariate analysis, margin status was not a statistically significant determinant of OS or RFS. In the current era of multiple available agents in RCC capable of cytoreduction, the risk factors that are predictive of a positive surgical margin at RN should be considered in the design of neoadjuvant systemic therapy trials, with the goal of improving long-term outcomes.

"App Use and Usability of a Barcode-Based Digital Platform to Augment COVID-19 Contact Tracing: Postpilot Survey and Paradata Analysis". Resumen
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed life in the United States, as the country has recorded over 23 million cases and 383,000 deaths to date. In the leadup to widespread vaccine deployment, testing and surveillance are critical for detecting and stopping possible routes of transmission. Contact tracing has become an important surveillance measure to control COVID-19 in the United States, and mobile health interventions have found increased prominence in this space. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the use and usability of MyCOVIDKey, a mobile-based web app to assist COVID-19 contact tracing efforts, during the 6-week pilot period. Methods A 6-week study was conducted on the Vanderbilt University campus in Nashville, Tennessee. The study participants, consisting primarily of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty in the Chemistry Department at Vanderbilt University, were asked to use the MyCOVIDKey web app during the course of the study period. Paradata were collected as users engaged with the MyCOVIDKey web app. At the end of the study, all participants were asked to report on their user experience in a survey, and the results were analyzed in the context of the user paradata. Results During the pilot period, 45 users enrolled in MyCOVIDKey. An analysis of their enrollment suggests that initial recruiting efforts were effective; however, participant recruitment and engagement efforts at the midpoint of the study were less effective. App use paralleled the number of users, indicating that incentives were useful for recruiting new users to sign up but did not result in users attempting to artificially inflate their use as a result of prize offers. Times to completion of key tasks were low, indicating that the main features of the app could be used quickly. Of the 45 users, 30 provided feedback through a postpilot survey, with 26 (58%) completing it in its entirety. The MyCOVIDKey app as a whole was rated 70.0 on the System Usability Scale, indicating that it performed above the accepted threshold for usability. When the key-in and self-assessment features were examined on their own, it was found that they individually crossed the same thresholds for acceptable usability but that the key-in feature had a higher margin for improvement. Conclusions The MyCOVIDKey app was found overall to be a useful tool for COVID-19 contact tracing in a university setting. Most users suggested simple-to-implement improvements, such as replacing the web app framework with a native app format or changing the placement of the scanner within the app workflow. After these updates, this tool could be readily deployed and easily adapted to other settings across the country. The need for digital contact tracing tools is becoming increasingly apparent, particularly as COVID-19 case numbers continue to increase while more businesses begin to reopen.

Resumen
The Dept. of Agricultural Sciences currently offers degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Undergraduate programs in Plant Science, Animal Science, and Rural Development were consolidated within the Dept. of Agricultural Sciences in the late 1980s due to the declining number of graduates. However, no personnel turnover or course changes occurred due to consolidation. Enrollment at the undergraduate level has doubled within the past 5 years. Student enrollment for Fall 1995 included 127 undergraduates and 31 graduate students. Graduation figures projected for 1995–96 include 26 undergraduates and 8 graduate students. Horticulture and Agronomy are now two of the concentrations available for the BS degree in Agricultural Sciences, and Plant Science is an option for the MS degree in Agricultural Sciences. Presently in the plant sciences there are approximately 30 undergraduates and 20 MS students. Faculty and professional staff affiliated with the Cooperative Agricultural Research Program are encouraged to submit teaching proposals to the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants Program, a USDA-funded competitive program for the agricultural sciences. Awards enable grantee institutions to attract more minority students into the agricultural sciences, expand institutional linkages, and strengthen education in targeted need areas. The Grants Program supports teaching projects related to curricula design, materials development, and faculty and student enhancement. Current teaching grants address graduate and undergraduate education in molecular biology and undergraduate education in soil sciences.

Resumen
Early histories of the civil rights movement that appeared prior to the 1980s were primarily biographies of Martin Luther King, Jr. Collectively, these works helped to create the familiar “Montgomery to Memphis” narrative framework for understanding the history of the civil rights movement in the United States. This narrative begins with King's rise to leadership during the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott in Alabama, and ends with his 1968 assassination in Memphis, Tennessee. Since the 1980s, a number of studies examining the civil rights movement at local and state levels have questioned the usefulness and accuracy of the King-centric Montgomery to Memphis narrative as the sole way of understanding the civil rights movement. These studies have made it clear that civil rights struggles already existed in many of the communities where King and the organization of which he was president, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), ran civil rights campaigns in the 1960s. Moreover, those struggles continued long after King and the SCLC had left those communities. Civil rights activism also thrived in many places that King and the SCLC never visited. As a result of these local and state studies, historians have increasingly framed the civil rights movement within the context of a much longer, ongoing struggle for black freedom and equality, unfolding throughout the twentieth century at local, state and national levels. More recently, a number of books have sought to place the civil rights movement within the larger context of international relations. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Montgomery bus boycott next year, the event that launched King's movement leadership, it seems an appropriate point to return to the existing literature on King and to assess what has already been done, as well as to point to the gaps that still need to be filled, in what remains important field of study.

Initial trials of woody genera include Acer, Castanea, Cornus, Lagerstroemia, Quercus, Syringa, and Ulmus. Herbaceous genera are Echinacea, Hemerocallis, and Hosta. Plantings will be made over a three year period as infrastructure at the new station develops. Complementary grant proposals have been recently submitted. Design, funding and support of all Tennessee introduction and evaluation programs will be discussed.

Resumen
Many new plants and varieties are introduced into the market every year. Little information is generally available about the landscape performance of these plants. To take the guesswork out of their landscape performance in the Tennessee region, the Univ. of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) Gardens were established. Started in 1983 as an All-America Selections (AAS) Test Garden, on less than a quarter of an acre, the UTIA Gardens have grown to 5 acres and now include plant introductions from 25 commercial seed and plant companies. An average of 550 summer and winter annuals are evaluated annually in addition to an assortment of bulbs, perennials, herbs, groundcovers, ornamental grasses, aquatics, trees, and shrubs. Because of the volume of plants, evaluation criteria are in conjunction with industry requests and are not always replicated. In addition to university support, the gardens receive revenues from the sponsoring commercial seed and plant companies, the Tennessee green industry trade associations, a “Friends of the Gardens” support group, and gifts. As a result of the herbaceous plant evaluation program, the UTIA Gardens have grown to be a significant resource for the university, community, and green industry. A variety of university departments use the gardens in their teaching; community groups, including schools, tour and use the gardens; and open houses and field days assist commercial growers and landscapers in remaining current on new plant introductions and their performance.

Resumen
The Lower Mississippi Delta region surrounds Memphis, Tennessee, in a two-hundred-mile radius. The character of this region has exerted a powerful influence on the applied anthropology program at Memphis State University. Pervasive poverty, income disparities, labor conflict, industrial restructuring, and the growth of community-based groups in the Delta region have created a framework for the successful development of the program.

Resumen
The Tennessee State University Nursery Crops Research Station is located at McMinnville in Middle Tennessee. This is a major nursery production area with a USDA Zone 6b climate and 134 cm mean annual rainfall. Approximately 4 ha has been established, with drip irrigation, for comparative evaluation trials of Acer, Cornus, Lagerstroemia, Quercus, Syringa and Ulmus. Plants are being evaluated for: 1) landscape performance - growth, drought tolerance, heat/cold tolerance, 2)ornamental characteristics - bloom. leafcolor, fall color, shape, 3) resistance to disease and pests, and 4) adaptability for production under commercial conditions. Acquisition of plant materials began in 1992 with the collection and planting of more than 120 spp/cv of Acer. Plantings in 1994 consisted of Cornus = 100 spp/cv; Lagerstroemia = 70 spp/cv; Quercus ≈ 90 spp/cv; Syringa ≈ 50 spp/cv and Ulmus ≈ 30 spp/cv. The long term objective is the establishment of a comprehensive evaluation program for the nursery industry of Tennessee.

Resumen
Abstract Many studies have estimated demand functions for visits to recreation sites. Several included commonly defined recreation-based areas such as beaches, parks, lakes and rivers, but excluded examination of horticulturally significant sites such as botanic gardens and arboreta. This study estimates user-demand and consumer surplus for visits to the University of Tennessee Arboretum by the travel cost method. Results suggest that travel cost and income of consumers are important determinants of demand, at least in the case of visits to the University of Tennessee Arboretum, and that consumer-use value may be derived from this demand. Consumer-use value is estimated to be $20.43 per person.

Resumen
Public works efforts, if properly targeted, could be invaluable in overcoming barriers to the productive reuse of brownfields. A survey conducted by the University of Tennessee's Waste Management Research and Education Institute found that, in Tennessee, brownfield redevelopers are likely to encounter impediments because of the sites' urban character, not simply because of their contamination. This article summarizes the results of that survey.
