Resumen
This study researches local economy's competitiveness in the Varaždin-Koprivnica Region (North-Western Croatia) in the period between 2009 and 2020. Shift-share method has been used which measures the deviation between the regional development and the development of total national area and tends to explain whether it is the result of exogenous or endogenous conditions. Data on the number of employed people and Gross Value Added were used as points of reference for the competitiveness. The results showed the above average regional development which is the result of the influence of endogenous o

Resumen
Abstract From 1990s to the end of 2006 there have been two stock exchanges in Croatia - an official stock exchange in Zagreb and a so-called alternative capital market in Varaždin. The Zagreb stock exchange had a dominant role in the Western Balkan region until 2008, when its market capitalisation significantly decreased because of the influence of the global financial crisis and the economic downturn of the country. This paper analyses gradual regulatory and institutional development of the Croatian capital market, emergence and strengthening of institutional investors and assets under their

Resumen
Groundwater is a valuable source of water for human consumption, and its quality is a current issue worldwide. Understanding carbon and water cycling presents the basis of biogeochemical reactions occurring in the aquifer; therefore, understanding their interaction is imperative for sustainable water management. In the paper, this interaction was investigated within the complex surface water (SW)–groundwater (GW) system in the Varaždin region (Croatia) by using a multi-parameter approach: δ13CDIC values, carbon species (DIC, DOC), δ18O and δ2H values, geochemical indicators (T, pH, DO, EC), an

1. This article reconstructs six pairs of PSl equivalents for ‘alder' preserved in Slavic dialects in an appellative and/or onomastic function, whose elements can be distinguished from one another by grammatical gender (feminine or masculine) and declension type: *olьxa - *olьxъ, *olьša - *olьšь, *olьs'a - *olьs'ъ, *elьxa - *elьxъ, *elьša - *elьšъ, and *elьs'a - *elьs'ъ. The masculine forms are known only in East and South Slavic dialects. 2. The elements of the pair with the oldest phonetic form, which show the word-formational relationship of an ā-stem for the feminine form (*alisā) versus a

Resumen
This paper deals with the problem of collections from former socio-political organizations that resulted from the activities of the Communist Party of Croatia, such as local and district committees and the National Front, which are kept in authorized institutions in the National Archive in Varaždin and the National Archive for Međimurje. In this paper we will first provide a short description of the formation and constitution of the Communist Party of Croatia, and will then describe the collections of the organizations mentioned in the Međimurje and Koprivnička Podrava regions.

Resumen
The variation in the major groundwater chemistry can be controlled by dissolution and precipitation of minerals, oxidation-reduction reactions, sorption and exchange reactions, and transformation of organic matter, but it can also occur as a result of anthropogenic influence. The alluvial aquifer represents the main source of potable water for public water supply of the town Varaždin and the surrounding settlements. Sampling campaigns were carried out from June 2017 until June 2019 to collect groundwater samples from nine observation wells. Major cations and anions, dissolved organic carbon an

In the region of north-western Croatia (NWC) 328 topsoil samples were taken (from a depth of 0 to 25 cm). The composite samples were analyzed after near total decomposition (a hot acid mixture: HClO4–HNO3–HCl–HF at 200°C) by ICP–AES for As, Cd, Cu, Pband Zn. Hg was analysed by cold vapour AAS. The following element concentration ranges were acquired: As 2–74 mg/kg (geometric mean 8 mg/kg), Cd 0.4–9.4 mg/kg (geometric mean 0.4 mg/kg), Cu5–248 mg/kg (geometric mean 22 mg/kg), Hg 5–4,535 mg/t (geometric mean 55 mg/t), Pb 15–699 (geometric mean 32 mg/kg) and Zn28–1,432 (geometric mean 82 mg/kg). Resumen
Honey has been recognized as a reliable indicator of environmental quality because of honeybees’ intense foraging activity, which brings them into contact with many persistent organic pollutants around the hive. In this study, four types of honey (meadow, acacia, chestnut, and honey in comb) collected at three different locations were analyzed for Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn levels. The highest levels of Fe and Cu in chestnut honey, Co and Zn in meadow honey, and Pb in honey in comb were observed in Varaždin County. The lowest levels of Pb in meadow honey and Co in comb honey were found fro

The paper follows the epidemic wave which spread in 1679 from Austrian towards Slovenian Styria, and then, continuing through Ptuj and Varaždin, moved in the directions of Podravina and Croatian Zagorje, reaching Markuševac and other villages in the Zagreb region. A description of the disease and its devastating impact on the Ptuj region is taken from a unique and preserved source, the Latin poem about the plague by the Hajdina parish pastor, Jurij Hauptmanič. The paper then focuses on the situation in Zagreb in the summer and autumn of 1682 and the beginning of 1683, analysing Jesuit and Fran
