Resumen
This study researches local economy's competitiveness in the Varaždin-Koprivnica Region (North-Western Croatia) in the period between 2009 and 2020. Shift-share method has been used which measures the deviation between the regional development and the development of total national area and tends to explain whether it is the result of exogenous or endogenous conditions. Data on the number of employed people and Gross Value Added were used as points of reference for the competitiveness. The results showed the above average regional development which is the result of the influence of endogenous o

Abstract From 1990s to the end of 2006 there have been two stock exchanges in Croatia - an official stock exchange in Zagreb and a so-called alternative capital market in Varaždin. The Zagreb stock exchange had a dominant role in the Western Balkan region until 2008, when its market capitalisation significantly decreased because of the influence of the global financial crisis and the economic downturn of the country. This paper analyses gradual regulatory and institutional development of the Croatian capital market, emergence and strengthening of institutional investors and assets under their

Groundwater is a valuable source of water for human consumption, and its quality is a current issue worldwide. Understanding carbon and water cycling presents the basis of biogeochemical reactions occurring in the aquifer; therefore, understanding their interaction is imperative for sustainable water management. In the paper, this interaction was investigated within the complex surface water (SW)–groundwater (GW) system in the Varaždin region (Croatia) by using a multi-parameter approach: δ13CDIC values, carbon species (DIC, DOC), δ18O and δ2H values, geochemical indicators (T, pH, DO, EC), an

This paper deals with the problem of collections from former socio-political organizations that resulted from the activities of the Communist Party of Croatia, such as local and district committees and the National Front, which are kept in authorized institutions in the National Archive in Varaždin and the National Archive for Međimurje. In this paper we will first provide a short description of the formation and constitution of the Communist Party of Croatia, and will then describe the collections of the organizations mentioned in the Međimurje and Koprivnička Podrava regions.

The variation in the major groundwater chemistry can be controlled by dissolution and precipitation of minerals, oxidation-reduction reactions, sorption and exchange reactions, and transformation of organic matter, but it can also occur as a result of anthropogenic influence. The alluvial aquifer represents the main source of potable water for public water supply of the town Varaždin and the surrounding settlements. Sampling campaigns were carried out from June 2017 until June 2019 to collect groundwater samples from nine observation wells. Major cations and anions, dissolved organic carbon an

Honey has been recognized as a reliable indicator of environmental quality because of honeybees’ intense foraging activity, which brings them into contact with many persistent organic pollutants around the hive. In this study, four types of honey (meadow, acacia, chestnut, and honey in comb) collected at three different locations were analyzed for Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn levels. The highest levels of Fe and Cu in chestnut honey, Co and Zn in meadow honey, and Pb in honey in comb were observed in Varaždin County. The lowest levels of Pb in meadow honey and Co in comb honey were found fro

A description of the disease and its devastating impact on the Ptuj region is taken from a unique and preserved source, the Latin poem about the plague by the Hajdina parish pastor, Jurij Hauptmanič. Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to assess the hydropower potential of the Bednja River for the construction of hydroelectric power plants using turbines that use the potential energy of water and those that exploit the kinetic energy of the watercourse. The location near Lovrentovec, specifically at the bridge over the Bednja River, is analyzed. Hydropower plants are classified as renewable energy sources and therefore do not have a negative impact on the environment compared to fossil fuels. The year 1664 represented an important historic milestone in Southeast Europe. The Ottoman Empire reached its peak size in Europe, but at the same time the gradual decline of their rule began tobe obvious. The Habsburg court, headed by the Caesar Leopold I, was not prepared to carry out an extensive military operation against the Ottomans. The latter, well aware of this fact, substantially raided the lands of Ban Nikola Zrinski, especially the beglerbeg of Kanizsa with his constant invasions into the surroundings of Varaždin. In Croatia, TBE was reported for the first time in 1953 near Križevci (Stara Ves, northwestern region).1 In addition to this first focus, several continental foci (Bjelovar, Pakrac, Koprivnica, Karlovac, Varaždin) have been recorded since 1961. Moreover, TBEV antibodies were detected in residents of the Croatian littoral near the islands of Zadar, Pula, and Brac.2 In 1991, TBEV emerged in the mountainous area of Gorski Kotar.3 The disease is also endemic in northwestern and eastern regions between the Sava and Drava rivers. Endemicity is highest in northwestern counties, with average incidence

This article deals with historical and contemporary language contact between Croatian on the one hand and Italian and German on the other in the Zadar and Varaždin regions. It focuses on language contact identifiable in the analysis of linguistic items related to space and occurrences in space. Because language contact frequently results in language conflict, it also considers the possibility of correlating the two phenomena based on a corpus analysis and from the perspective of three areas of interest: language, individual language user(s), and society. The findings suggest that there is a di
