Resumen
Sand dunes play a significant role during coastal storms by absorbing the impacts of storm surge and high waves. Therefore, rapid profile changes and destruction of sand dunes, which may be caused by wave-induced overwash, lead to an increased flood risk landward of dunes. The effects of vegetation on dune erosion and overwash during storm events, however, have never been studied. This study is based on a laboratory experiment investigating the effects of woody plants on dune erosion and overwash of high and low dunes. During the five tests conducted foredune scarping was observed for the thre

SynopsisThe principal types of stratification and some characteristic sedimentary sequences found in vegetated coastal dunes in Atlantic Canada are described. Four examples are selected to show a range of dune types and depositional settings. In each case the documentation and interpretation of the internal structure and stratification has made an important contribution to understanding the evolution of the dunes. Stratification and depositional models are presented for:(1) a single, continuous, transgressive foredune ridge which maintains its form during transgression;(2) a discontinuous tran

Most geomorphologists and geologists do not differentiate the various types of linear dune and refer to them as one dune type mainly in the terms of linear, longitudinal or seif dunes. In recent morphodynamic and genetic classifications of dunes, all types of linear dunes are lumped under the heading of longitudinal dunes (Wasson and Hyde, 1983; Hunter et al., 1983). This review, however, substantiates three different simple linear dunes - lee dunes, seifs and vegetated- linear - each of which has a different shape and mechanism of formation and elongation.

This project is designed to chacterize and map the vegetation of the Great Sand Dunes National Monument, Colorado (GSDNM) and to determine if the vegetated areas in the dune field are permanent, temporary, or migratory. It is not known if the vegetation around the dunes is encroaching on the dunes, being replaced by the dunes or is stable. There are also concerns about the possible effect a proposed water export project adjacent to GSDNM would have on the dunes and their vegetation.

Resumen
SynopsisThe importance of aeolian deposition is clearly shown by the size and bulk of coastal dunes. Sand dunes occur where there is a large supply of sand, a wind to move it, and a place in which it can accumulate. A dune classification is presented which takes into account the origin, internal geometry and surface geomorphology of coastal dunes. Since the main element that distinguishes coastal dunes from desert dunes is vegetation, the relative amount of vegetation may be used as a typology. Four dune types are distinguished: vegetated dunes, parabolic dunes, medanos (i.e. large sand hills

Resumen
The ‘Falster dike’ is a system of a coastal vegetated dunes with a grass-covered sand dike protecting a low-lying area of about 7,000 summer houses, many of which being inhabited during winter, and therefore in danger of any storm surge induced flooding. The paper discusses (i) the assessment and uncertainties of relevant data such as bathymetry, topography, wind and wave data, water levels; (ii) deterministic calculations of wave run-up and overtopping of the dike without dunes; (iii) the calculations of dune erosion; and (iv) a reliability assessment of a dune and dike system. Resumen
The New Holland mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) was first recorded at Wilson?s Promontory in 1972 in heathland vegetation, but has not been located in this habitat subsequently. The species was not trapped again until 1993 when it was found in calcarenite dune woodland on the Yanakie Isthmus. The aims of this study were to assess the population dynamics and habitat use of the species in this dune habitat. Mark-recapture trapping was conducted at three sites from 1999 to 2002. One site was located on low (0 - 5 m), flat sand dunes and open swales, another on medium (5 ? 10 m) vegetated dunes,

Resumen
Sand movement is one of the main environmental hazards in Northern Sudan that threaten livelihood and rural communities. This paper investigates for the first time the use of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) offset tracking technique for detecting sand movement in Northern Sudan, and distinguishes the impact of the movement influencing factors: wind speed/direction, vegetation and topography. High-resolution images from the Sentinel-1 satellite were used for the generation of displacement maps. Three different dune fields with different characteristics were investigated for a study period be

Parabolic dunes are ‘U’ or ‘V’-shaped aeolian landforms that form on pre-existing sand deposits. Their morphology consists of an upwind deflation basin, bordered by often vegetated trailing arms and a downwind depositional lobe. The orientation of parabolic dunes is commonly attributed to the prevailing or resultant wind direction. Consequently, the orientation of parabolic dunes stabilised by vegetation growth has been used as a proxy for wind direction during past climates in several studies. However, the ability or extent of parabolic dune morphology to steer incident wind flow parallel to

Resumen
Vegetation is believed to increase the stability of dunes during wave attack, but limited data is available. A physical model study was performed to evaluate changes in the dune stability with and without biomass, both above and belowground. The above and belowground biomass was modeled using wooden dowels and coir fibers, respectively. For both the collision and overwash storm impact regimes, the results of this study clearly demonstrate that the inclusion of biomass in the model dune reduces the erosion and overwash. The combination of both above and belowground biomass was the most effectiv
