My aim in this article is to defend the essential core of the theories of truth that understand truth as identity, namely: that the truth-bearer is the truth-maker. In particular, I am interested in defending the version of Hornsby (1997) and McDowell (1994) against the attacks made by Dodd (1995; 1999; 2008). My defense is applicable to previous versions belonging to this family of theories, especially to that of Moore (1899; 1902).

It is as if the whole of a man's significance had now shrunk into a mere musical note or phrase, suggestive of his singularity—happy are those whose singularity gives a note so clear as to be victorious over the inevitable pity of such a diminution and

Abstract In ‘Against fictional realism’ Anthony Everett argues that fictional realism leads to indeterminate identity. He concludes that we should reject fictional realism. Everett’s paper and much of the ensuing literature does not discuss what exactly fictional characters are. This is a mistake. I argue that some versions of abstract creationism about fictional characters lead to indeterminate identity, and that some versions of Platonism about fictional characters lead only to indeterminate reference. In doing so I show that Everett’s argument poses a more pressing problem for abstract crea

177 Italian undergraduates (83 men and 94 women) completed the Italian version of the Spence, et al.'s Personal Attributes Questionnaire and the Italian version of the Christie's Mach IV Scale. One-way analysis of variance indicated for men that undifferentiated individuals reported significantly higher Mach scores. For women, feminine sex-typed individuals reported higher Mach scores. Low masculinity might be associated with stronger Machiavellianism. Further implications of the findings were discussed.

This study aimed to examine measurement invariance (configural, metric, scalar and residual) of English and Amharic language versions of the Multi-group Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) on a sample of Ethiopian public university students (n = 286, for the English and n = 343 for the Amharic versions). After establishing a baseline model of the scale using CFA, we assessed the four levels of measurement invariance, applying more stringent and increasingly restrictive multi-group confirmatory factor analyses. We used chi-square differences and alternative fit indices to determine model fit. In the

This study presents the results of multivariate statistical analyses of 26 different versions of Sadhukarn main melodies using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and cluster analysis. The objective was to identify the optimal number of parameters for identifying the origin and relationships among Sadhukarn versions, including r

The aim of this research was to identify versions of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) as practiced in different settings. For this purpose, an ethnographic study was carried out in two MMA academies in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, during 2014. It was possible to identify these different versions through observations and conversations carried out during practices in these two settings. The research was based on theoretical approaches of Actor-Network Theory in dialogue with Constructionist Social Psychology. The results suggest that MMA is concomitantly a sport, a spectacle and an event within the lo

Philosophical anthropology proceeds from understanding the essence of man as a fundamentally open, unfinished entity in its formation. But it was just such a formation that the representatives of philosophical anthropology understood differently: some saw certain stages, stages of such formation, some distinguished certain classification types, and only in recent decades more and more anthropologists have drawn attention to multiple identities as anthropological characteristics of man. Anthropology, in this case, seeks objective, mainly natural, grounds for such a plurality: the splitting of s

This paper investigated how the gender identity of the female protagonist in the English novel Pride and Prejudice (Austen, 1813) and its two Persian translations was represented under the influence of the dominant ideology in Iran`s pre-and post- Islamic Revolution eras. In so doing, Baker`s analytical model (2006) was applied by which the ST and the TTs were analyzed at micro-and macro-levels. In this regard, the configurations of features of narrativity in all versions (i.e., both ST and TTs), and the influence of Iran`s ruling systems on these configurations were investigated. In a recent issue of this journal, Steven Dezort criticizes two versions of the contralife argument, including my version and a version defended by some prominent new natural law theorists. In this essay, I argue that people should accept the contralife argument even if they disagree with other principles of new natural law theory. To defend this thesis, I correct some misstatements about the contralife argument and identify basic disagreements about defining actions and respecting human life.

This paper develops the idea of neocolonialism as organizational identity work in multinational corporations (MNCs). We argue that neocolonialism – the ethos and practice of colonialism and western superiority in contemporary society – is a means through which identity is worked on at MNC headquarters (HQ). In contrast to extant neocolonial studies of western MNCs, which focus on the subsidiaries (the colonized) and how their identities are shaped by the HQ (the colonizer), we analyse how the HQ is shaped by the subsidiaries. We elucidate two versions of neocolonialism at play: a traditional n

The article presents the genesis of spatial shift-share analysis. The author focuses on the links of spatial versions of shift-share analysis with the classical one, which is not just a starting point for them from a historical point of view, but retains the status of their constituent element. The author describes spatial versions that integrate spatially lagged variables into the classical version and keep the national economy as a reference, and a version that is used in conjunction with the classical one in terms of content and defines the economy of the neighborhood of the region as a ref
