På Söderbergs Personbilar i Norrköping AB bedrivs en serviceprocess för begagnade bilar, en tjänsteverksamhet som idag är präglad av en stor ineffektivitet med avseende på tid. I detta examensarbete utförs en fallstudie på företaget där problemet analyseras i syfte att identifiera det tidssvinn som förekommer i processen, utreda dess uppkomst, samt formulera passande åtgärdsförslag till företaget som vid ett genomförande skulle minska genomloppstiden för bilarna i processen. Intervjuer och observationer har skapat en övergripande förståelse för processen, där förklaringar har erhållits om hur processen är tänkt att fungera, hur den fungerar i praktiken, och varför den fungerar som den gör. Som komplement till detta har värdeflödeskartläggning av två bilar genomförts, där bilarnas färd genom processen studerades i praktiken. De två bilarna studerades från dess inkommande till företaget tills det att de var klara till försäljning. Genom detta erhölls ytterligare information om processen. I värdeflödeskartläggningen framkom det att tidssvinnet var stort för bägge bilar, och att andelen tid för värdehöjande aktiviteter var mycket liten för bilarna. Allt material om processen analyseras och ett antal olika åtgärdsförslag för processen är framarbetade till företaget. Tre huvudåtgärder presenteras som vid ett införande troligen skulle underlätta avsevärt för företaget vid ett genomförande av övriga åtgärdsförslag. Den första av dessa tre huvudåtgärder är att tillsätta en ledare för processen, något som saknas idag. Ledaren ska ha befogenheter att genomföra förändringar i processen, och ska arbeta för en ständig förbättring av processen. Den andra huvudåtgärden är att utveckla nedskrivna standarder för personalen som beskriver hur alla aktiviteter inom processen ska utföras. Standarderna ska vara utformade så att aktiviteterna utförs på ett optimalt sätt. Den tredje huvudåtgärden är att göra fler resurser dedikerade inom processen. Dessa tre åtgärder, och övriga åtgärdsförslag skulle med största sannolikhet generera en avsevärt kortare genomloppstid för bilarna, det vill säga precis det resultat som eftersöks i processen.

Sammanfattning

Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka huruvida man på Viking Sewing Machines (VSM) skall sköta hanteringen av de symaskiner som företaget köper in från leverantörer i fjärran östern. Skall företaget inom egna lokaler sköta lagerhanteringen eller skall de fortsätta som i dagsläget med att företaget Schenker hanterar lagerhållningen?

Det här är en intressant frågeställning men samtidigt en komplex sådan. Det finns flera aspekter att ta hänsyn till innan man kan komma till ett beslut. Det krävs ett grundligt arbete med prognosplanering, t.ex. på grund av de långa ledtiderna som motsvarar 3-4 månader. Det här är viktigt för att kunna hålla en hög leveransservice mot kund då det periodvis sker svängningar i försäljningen. Handeln med symaskiner är kraftigt säsongsbetonad, med ett uppsving under vinterhalvåret. För att kunna hålla en ledande ställning på marknaden under rådande konkurrensklimat har VSM tvingats att förändra i produktstrukturen, där de enklare maskinerna är på väg bort från den egna produktionen. Kvar finns de mer avancerade maskinerna med imponerande datorkraft som klarar av de mest avancerade sömnader och mönster. Maskiner som tagits bort från den egna produktionen har ersatts med ”billiga” köpesmaskiner från leverantörer i fjärran östern, för att kunna konkurrera i segmentet av enklare symaskiner. Den här förändringen har resulterat i att det är mer ekonomiskt att outsoursa verksamheten till så kallade låglöneländer. Vi har utfört en så kallad fallstudie, där underlaget för arbetet består av primär och sekundär informationsinsamling. Det här har gjorts för att kunna samla in de olika data som är nödvändiga för att besvara vår frågeställning och komma fram till ett beslutsgrundande resultat. Den primära informationsstudien består av resultatet av de intervjuer som gjorts på företaget och den sekundära datainsamlingen består av litteratursökning.

Vi har räknat ut hur stor del av lagret som dessa köpesmaskinerna kommer att ta upp och detta har vi gjort genom att på olika sätt beräkna säkerhetslager och det totala maxilagret.

Rapporten visar att lägga ut lagerhanteringen på en utomstående part medför en extra kostnad. Resultatet av studien är utformad så att kostnaden att ha maskinerna ”hemma” är jämförd med kostnaden att ha maskinerna på Schenker. Uträkningar visar att det är väsentligt dyrare för företaget att lagerhålla hos den utomstående parten. VSM har ett automatiserat system och på Schenker tillkommer det hanteringskostnader dvs. kostnader för in- och uttag utöver hyra av lager. Skillnaderna i att ha maskinerna på brätt i VSM:s lager är alltså betydligt billigare jämfört med att ha dem på pall hos Schenker. Att lagerhålla maskinerna ”hemma” skulle också medföra en rationalisering av hanteringen då maskinerna skall säljas och pallarna skall packas om till respektive adress. Att i VSM:s lager ha maskinerna i datasystemet och i ett redan fungerande packningssystem tar alltså bort den arbetsbörda som tillkommer med att ha dem på Schenker. De siffror som inte tagits i beaktning är de investeringskostnader som krävs för att göra införandet av maskinerna möjligt. Problemformuleringen är som sagt tidigare komplex och för att ett beslut skall kunna tas måste man bedöma helheten och inte endast se till en kostnadspost. Det är därför svårt att utifrån endast resultatet av denna rapport kunna fälla ett 100% beslut.


Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the company Viking Sewing Machines (VSM) should handle the storing of its sewing machines bought from the Far East. Should VSM continue to store the machines in assistance with Schenker, or should the company handle the process by itself and store the machines in its own warehouse.

This question is interesting at the same time as it is complex. There are several aspects to consider prior to a decision can be made. It demands a thorough forecast planning, due to the three to four months long lead-time from the Far East. The company needs to consider this aspect carefully in order to keep a high quality delivery service during the sale fluctuations. The trade with sewing machines is highly dependent on the season, with increasing sales during the winter. To be able to maintain the leading position on the market VSM has been forced to make changes in its structure of products, where the simpler machines have been taken away from the production. The advanced machines are still produced by VSM, these machines have an impressive capacity that manages the most advanced sewing and patterns. The machines that have been taken away from production have been replaced with low-priced machines traded from the Far East. This change has resulted in that parts of VSM’s production are outsourced to low paid countries. We have conducted a case study, and our information consists of primary and secondary data. This study is done in order to collect data that is necessary for answering our research questions, and find a result for a decision. The primary data consists of the results received during the interviews, and the secondary data are based on the literature study.

We have done calculations of how much of the space in the warehouse will be occupied by the trading machines, calculating safety-stock and the total warehouse has attained this.

The study illustrates that by using an external part that handles the warehouse will result in increased costs for VSM. The result of the study is accomplished by comparing the cost of having the machines at “home” to the cost of using Schenker. The calculations demonstrate that it is much more expensive for VSM to make use of an external part. VSM has a fully automation system and at Schenker costs of handling the machines will be added, these costs consists of input and output of the products, besides the cost of renting the warehouse. The differences of having the machines on shelves, so-called “brätt”, at VSM are therefore considerably beneficial. It would also lead to a rationalization when handling the machines when they are sold and the pallets are to be loaded to respective dispatch note. At VSM the machines are registered in the computer system and they already have a functional packing system. The numbers that the report not have bin taken in consideration are the investment costs that are required for making the introduction of the machines at VSM´s warehouse possible. The problem are as said earlier a complex decision variable and to make a decision you have to estimate the global approach and not only to one cost unit. It is therefore from only this report hard to come by a 100% resolution.

Companies face new challenges almost every day. In order to stay competitive, it is important that companies strive for continuous development and improvement. By describing companies through their processes it is possible to get a clear overview of the entire operation, which can contribute, to a well-established overall understanding of the company. This is a case study based on Stort AB which is a small logistics company specialized in international transportation and logistics solutions. The purpose of this study is to perform value stream mapping in order to create a more efficient production process and propose possible improvements in order to reduce processing time. After performing value stream mapping, data envelopment analysis is used to calculate how lean Stort AB is today and how lean the company can become by implementing the proposed improvements. The results show that the production process can improve efficiency by minimizing waste produced by a bad workplace layout and over-processing. The authors suggested solution is to introduce standardized processes and invest in technical instruments in order to automate the process to reduce process time. According to data envelopment analysis the business is 41 percent lean at present and may soon become 55 percent lean and finally reach an optimum 100 percent lean mode if the process is automated.
Företag står idag inför ständigt nya utmaningar. För att behålla sin konkurrenskraft är det viktigt att företag ständigt utvecklas och förbättras. Att beskriva företag genom deras processer och kartlägga alla flöden som genomströmmar företaget så uppstår en tydlig överblick över hela verksamheten som bidrar till en bra helhetsförståelse av företaget. Denna studie baseras på en fallstudie hos Stort AB som är ett mindre logistikföretag med specialisering på internationella transporter och logistiklösningar. Syftet med studien är att utföra en värdeflödesanalys med mål att effektivisera pakethanteringen och föreslå möjliga förändringsalternativ hur Stort AB kan effektivisera den befintliga pakethanteringen med fokus på tidsreducering. Efter värdeflödesanalysen användes data envelopment analysis för att beräkna hur lean verksamheten är idag och hur lean verksamheten kan bli genom förbättringsförslagen. Resultaten visar att pakethanteringen kan effektiviseras genom att minimera slöseri i form av onödiga rörelser och överbearbetning, införa standardiserade processer och genom att investera i teknik för att automatisera processen. Enligt beräkningar är verksamheten 41 procent lean i nuläget och kan inom kort framtid bli 55 procent lean och slutligen nå ett optimalt 100 procentigt lean-läge om pakethanteringen automatiseras.

Bakgrund: Den svenska produktionsindustrin hotas utav så kallade låglöneländer som kanerbjuda samma tillverkning med en högre lönsamhet. Detta gör att verksamheten måste varaattraktiv för såväl investerare som kunder vilket gör att företaget måste genomföra ständigaförbättringar för att klara konkurrensen. Detta är något som även Xylem i Emmaboda kännerav. Xylem tillverkar ett brett utbud av dränkbara vattenpumpar men även annan utrustningsom krävs för att leverera vattenteknologi. Tidigare studier på en utav Xylems verkstäderOPX har visat att produktionen lägger mycket tid på aktiviteter som inte är värdeskapande såsom materialhantering och andra förflyttningar genom fabriken. Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen är att identifiera var det kan finnas slöserier genom att utföra enValue stream mapping på en utav Xylems verkstäder i Emmaboda. Metod: Arbetet består av en fallstudie med explorativt syfte som utförs genom en Valuestream mapping. En kvalitativ forskningsmetod med insamling av såväl kvalitativa somkvantitativa data, genom observationer, intervjuer, litteraturstudier och tidsstudier hargenomförts. Resultat, slutsatser: Uppsatsen resulterade i en nutidskarta över bana 102 på OPX som i vilken en del mindre slöserier identifierades. Dock gav inte den valda metoden Value stream mapping önskat resultat då de upplevda slöserierna ifrån fallföretagets sida inte kunde identifieras. Utifrån detta drar författarna slutsatsen att en annan metod med utgångspunktifrån de upplevda problemen borde ha valts eller att de upplevda slöserierna inte grundar sig iden utvalda tillverkningsbanan.

In the final of magistral work I investigate increase of efficiency of industrial companies. I am mostly concentrated in creation of model for increase of efficiency of manufacturing. That will mostly be appropriate for industrial companies that are specialized in metal manufacturing and welding. In the first part analysis of scientific – methodic literature on theme of manufacturing efficiency increase is described by me including the essential notions. I have investigated various aspects of manufacturing organization. I have deepen in principles of possession of manufacturing and have analyzed principles of selection of Lean tools paying attention on criteria set in companies. In the second part information about surveys of trends of development of industrial companies is being given. I have invoked data of the Department of statistics. Questionnaire has been concluded and sent to industrial companies. In the third part model of increase of manufacturing efficiency is chartered. Also model of installment stages is drawn and divided. In each stage installment steps are named together with which the tool appropriate for installment of this is offered. Advantage of the model is such that all steps are shown in priorities together with the offered tools. Baigiamajame magistro darbe nagrinėju pramonės įmonių gamybos efektyvumo kelimą. Labiausiai koncentruojos ties gamybos efektyvumo kelimo modelio sukūrimu. Kuris labiausiai tiks pramonės įmonėms, kuriuos specializuojasi metalo apdirbimo ir suvirinimu. Pirmoje dalyje atlikta mokslinės - metodinės literatūros analizę gamybos kelimo efektyvumo tema aprašiau pagrindines sąvokas. Išnagrinėjau įvairius gamybos organizavimo aspektus. Įsigilinau į gamybos valdymo principus bei išanalizavau Lean įrankių pasirinkimo principus atsižvelgdamas į įmonėse nusistatytus kriterijus. Antroje dalyje yra pateikiama pramonės įmonių plėtros tendencijų tyrimus. Pasitelkiau Statistikos departamento teikiamus duomenys. Buvo sudaryta klausimų anketa ir išsiustos į pramonės įmones. Trečioje dalyje aprašytas mano sukurtas gamybos efektyvumo kelimo modelis. Taip pat nubražytas ir suskirstytas į modelis į diegimo etapus. Kiekviename etape yra įvardijami diegimo žingsniai, šalia kurių yra pasiūlytas tam žingsniui idiegti, galimas įrankis. Modelio privalumas tame, kad visi žingsniai yra parodyti eiles tvarka ir šalia pasiūlyti įrankiai. Kadangi išnagrinėjes kitų autorių pasiūlytus to pasigedau, manau kad mano modelis labai padėtų pradedančioms įmonėms įsidiegti Lean. Baigiamaji darba sudaro keturios dalis: įvadas, mokslinės literatūros analizė, empiriniai tyrimai ir sukurto modelio aprašymas kartu su įgyvendinimu. Sustainable Value Stream Mapping (Sus-VSM) builds upon traditional VSM to capture additional sustainability aspects of the product flow, such as environmental and societal aspects. This work presents research to expand the utility of Sus-VSM to supply chain networks, develop a general approach towards improving supply chain sustainability, and examine the benefits of implementing simulation and a design of experiments (DOE) style analysis. Metrics are identified to assess economic, environmental, and societal sustainability for supply chain networks and visual symbols are developed for the Supply Chain Sus-VSM (SC Sus-VSM) to allow users to easily identify locations where sustainability can be improved. A discrete event simulation (DES) model is developed to simulate the supply chain, allowing easier creation of future state maps, which are used to identify locations for sustainability improvement. A scoring methodology and DOE-style analysis are developed to collect more information from the supply chain. Results from the case study show that the SC Sus-VSM meets the goals desired, and that the DES model aids the goals of the map. It is also indicated that interventions in the supply chain should first focus on economic improvements, followed by societal and then environmental improvements to achieve the greatest supply chain sustainability.

Este trabalho teve como principais objetivos a exploração e o controle da técnica de Litografia Óptica de Escrita Direta na preparação de arranjos magnéticos extensos e de boa qualidade. Foram preparadas microestruturas à base de Permalloy e realizamos a caracterização morfologia e magnética desses sistemas. Os objetos obtidos pela técnica de microlitografia foram círculos e elipsóides cujas dimensões se restringiram a alguns micrômetros e foram dispostos em uma matriz quadrada contendo milhares destes elementos. Além de utilizar o DWL66 da HEIDELBERG instruments para a fabricação das máscaras de fotoresina, também foi utilizado o plasma etching para a limpeza do substrato antes e depois do processo de escrita. A deposição do material magnético foi utilizando magnetron sputtering DC. Ainda na preparação, foi confeccionada uma câmara para iluminação das amostras, com o intuito de aperfeiçoar o processo de sensibilização da fotoresina e assim minimizar a presença de resíduos decorrentes da etapa de remoção pelo revelador. Para a caracterização estrutural das amostras foram feitas análises por microscopia óptica, microscopia de Força Atômica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As imagens obtidas por essas técnicas revelaram arranjos extensos de boa qualidade e estruturas cujas dimensões e formas obedeciam à regularidade desejada, indicando a aplicabilidade da técnica e a confiabilidade em reproduzir estruturas. No que diz respeito à caracterização magnética, utilizou-se um Magnetômetro de Amostra Vibrante para obtenção de curvas de magnetização em função do campo aplicado.

Nas últimas décadas, tem aumentado o interesse no estudo da viabilidade organizacional por meio da utilização do Viable System Model (VSM) para o exame, analise e (re)desenho de uma organização que atravessa mudanças significativas. Dentre os modos de emprego do VSM (Modo I: Diagnóstico Organizacional e Modo II: Re-desenho Organizacional), o Modo I é fundamental e decisivo para seu sucesso, permitindo examinar, interpretar e modificar fraquezas ou falhas da estrutura sendo logo adotadas ações corretivas/preventivas por meio de indicadores (Modo II). O presente trabalho tem como objetivo propor e aplicar um método que permita avaliar a viabilidade da área de Produção do Programa da Pós-Graduação em Engenharia Aeronáutica e Mecânica (PG/EAM-P) do ITA. O método proposto foi baseado no modelo cibernético do Viable System Model (VSM) e no Sistema de Medição de Desempenho. A aplicação do método proposto no PG/EAM-P, mostrou-se idôneo para uma instituição federal de ensino superior, visando examinar a viabilidade organizacional e posterior desempenho da instituição que atravessa uma fase de mudanças. Os resultados do diagnóstico organizacional do PG/EAMP-P sugeriram que perante a complexidade, o sistema em estudo é um sistema viável e que cumpre os requisitos fundamentais e necessários para que possa manter uma existência independente, com unidades que tenham autonomia e com melhoria da sinapse (feedback) nos canais de comunicação e controle.

ABSTRACT Introduction and purpose Development of a VSM tool has been done by performing experimental field work at ABB Robotics, a company that mass produces industrial robots and associated accessories. The tool development, the primary part of the project, mainly puts focus on production aspects. Furthermore, it has been centered on plant layouts of the product layout kind (production line). The purpose of the development is to create a tailored VSM tool that auto generates a foundation for value stream maps based on calculations and possibly simple simulation. The purpose is broken down into two questions where concrete problems can be illustrated: A) How should the VSM tool plainly signal capacity vs. demand, time balances in production and the ratio between value and non-value adding aspects as well as intuitively promote knowledge and in a simple and fast manner be applicable to different kinds of production lines? B) Which constraints are placed on the potential of the VSM tool due to the current situation of the company, how does this contradict the main principles of VSM and how can the company work to maximize the tool´s potential in the future? Methodology and knowledge The development which is characterized by continuous counseling and feedback with the internal mentor is mainly based on laboratory work in Excel. In addition, the work has also involved the making of a user guide as well as an adjustable function for indicating production effects with colors. An evaluation of the tool and the user guide has also been made, which mainly is supported by a test run with the internal mentor and the nature of the methodology. The knowledge that the development uses as its footing mainly involves process- and value stream maps from the company, discussions with company personnel, self-performed laboratory work and theory from Rother and Shooks book “Lära sig se” (2005) and Drew. A. Locher´s book “Value Stream Mapping for Lean Development” (2008). Results The VSM tool manages, in a relevant way, to factor in all aspects that can be interpreted using a typical value stream map. In addition it also provides the following: balances between workstations and production lines, suggestions for amount of WIP between these, simple simulation of WIP between these, disturbance aspects, three total times; manufacturing lead time, inventory time and value adding time as well as a graphic illustration over production courses. The results are considered to fulfill the purpose of the project. Conclusion and future meaning The development results in a hybrid solution of sorts, a tool that exists somewhere in-between the typical draw-by-hand VSM work and simulation software. Its advantage is that it combines VSM theory with intuitive, swift and practical usage, which goes well in hand with today´s fluctuating conditions where time pressure of different kinds are present. The drawback is that the concept as a whole requires complementing in the form of Lean knowledge and gemba observations. Furthermore, there are implications associated with some types of parallel production and editing of the tool, which is to be addressed before implementation. In order to fully utilize the tool, the company also has to examine production times and make a minor adjustment to the process of collecting disturbance data. Three suggestions for the future are given; to study availability, transport aspects and the measuring of production times.

Detta examensarbete går ut på att för TitanX Engine Cooling ABs räkning analysera deras användning av Lean-verktyget Value Stream Mapping (VSM). Detta på grund av att verktyget inte levererar all information som företaget efterfrågar. För att hitta potentiella alternativ till VSM har verktyg och ramverk inom Enterprise Architecture studerats (EA). Utöver detta har även Theory of Constraints och Sex Sigma analyserats. För att undersöka om det är möjligt att även skapa en kostnadsdimension i VSM har påläggskalkylering undersökts. Resultatet av jämförelsen av teorin bakom VSM och hur TitanX använder VSM visar att det finns vissa skillnader, dock är skillnaderna inte så stora och tros inte påverka resultatet av själva kartläggningen. Vidare har analysen givit att EA kan ersätta VSM men också att modellerna och ramverken inom EA är avsevärt mer komplexa och omfattande än VSM. Theory of constraints är integrerbart med Lean och innehåller också en serie mätvärden som ger den information som TitanX efterfrågar.

På Kongsberg Automotive (KA) i Mullsjö tillverkas bland annat växelföringssystem till en gemensam plattform av personbilar. Företaget ser idag potential i att förbättra flödet av produkterna och dess ingående komponenter genom fabriken. KA tillverkar dessutom många av komponenterna i samma fabrik som slutmonteringen sker vilket skapar goda förutsättningar till att upprätthålla effektiva flöden. Idag körs treskift i produktionen samt extra helgskift vid behov. Ett av målen med studien är att utreda möjligheterna till ett kontinuerligt treskift och eliminera extrainsatta helgskift då dessa är kostsamma för företaget. Syftet med studien är att kartlägga flödet för två av de ingående komponenterna i slutprodukten med hjälp av metoden värdeflödesanalys (VSM) och utifrån detta läge sedan skapa ett önskvärt framtida tillstånd där olika slöserier i flödet eliminerats. Målet är slutligen att upprätta en konkret handlingsplan för hur det framtida önskvärda tillståndet ska uppnås. Studien avser även att pröva huruvida metoden produktionssimulering kan användas som komplement till värdeflödesanalys för att kvantifiera identifierade förbättringar. Som ett första steg i studien behövde data samlas in för att kunna fastställa nuläget. Detta utfördes med olika metoder för att skapa en så bred och korrekt bild av verkligheten som möjligt. Dels genomfördes tidsstudier för att kartlägga eller verifiera redan given data. Även genomgång av olika dokument, leveranslistor och uppföljningslistor ligger till grund för det nuläge som tagits fram. Projektet har genomsyrats av en nära kontakt med personalen på företaget för att få fram så mycket och trovärdig information som möjligt. Deltagande observationer har skett löpande under studien för att få tillgång till förstahandsdata. Med hjälp av värdeflödesanalys har först ett nuläge och sedan ett önskvärt framtida läge kunnat fastslås. Som en del av projektet har även en produktionssimuleringsmodell skapats över det aktuella flödet i syfte att testa hypotesen att föreslagna förbättringar med hjälp av simulering kan stärkas och kvantifieras. Under arbetet med att skapa det framtida önskvärda läget genomfördes en workshop på företaget där personer med olika funktioner på olika avdelningar deltog. De förbättringsförslag som kunnat identifieras under arbetets gång och som ligger till grund för det framtida tillståndet resulterade slutligen i en konkret handlingsplan. Resultaten av studien visar på stor förbättringspotential i de kartlagda flödena. De teoretiska beräkningar som gjorts visar att ledtiderna för komponenterna kan reduceras med upp till 2/3 och att antalet produkter i arbete kan reduceras med upp till 50 %. Även en stor potential till förbättring av tillgängligheten i flaskhalsen har identifierats. Skulle tillgängligheten öka med omkring 9 % skulle också ett kontinuerligt treskift kunna tillämpas med nuvarande kundbehov. Studien har även resulterat i en slutsats om att produktionssimulering inte lämpar sig som metod i denna fallstudie. Istället har analyser och experiment kunnat utföras med mindre avancerade analytiska verktyg. Studien föreslår även att företaget investerar i utbildning då bristande kunskaper inom Lean production idag medför en begränsad förståelse för arbetet med att bli effektivare och mer flexibla.
Kongsberg Automotive (KA) in Mullsjö manufactures gear transmission systems to a common platform of passenger cars. The company does see a potential to improve the flow of products and its components by the factory. KA also manufactures many of the components in the same factory as the final assembly is done, creating good prospects for maintaining efficient value streams. Today, production is running three shifts supplemented with extra weekend shifts as needed. One objective of this study is to investigate the possibilities of a continuous three-shift and eliminate weekend shifts as these are extra costly for the company. The main objective of this study is to map the flow of two of the components in the final product using value stream mapping (VSM) method. From this position a future desired state is created in which different types of waste in the flow has been eliminated. The goal is finally to set up a concrete action plan to achieve the desired future state. The study also intends to examine whether the method of production simulation can be used as complement to value stream mapping and to quantify the identified improvements. As a first step in the study, data had to be collected to determine the current situation. This was performed with different methods to create a broad and accurate picture of the situation. Time studies were used to either identify or verify given data. Also a review of various documents, supply lists, and tracking lists are the basis for development of the present state. The entire project has been permeated by a close contact with the staff of the company to obtain as much and credible information as possible. Participant observation has been made continuously during the study to get access to primary data. The use of value stream mapping has resulted in a current state and a desirable future state of the components flow. As part of the project, a production simulation model has been created over the current flow in order to test the hypothesis that the proposed enhancements can be strengthened and quantified by using production simulation. During the process of creating the desired future state, a workshop was held at the company where people with different functions in different departments participated. The proposed improvement that has been identified during the work has resulted in a concrete action plan to reach the future state. The results of the study demonstrate a great potential for improvement in the identified value streams. Theoretical calculations show that the lead time for components can be reduced by up to 2/3 and the number of products in process can be reduced by up to 50%. Also a great potential to improve the accessibility in the bottleneck has been identified. Would this availability increase about 9%, three-shift production can be applied to satisfy the current customer needs. This would result in that weekend shifts are no longer needed. The study also resulted in a conclusion that simulation is not suitable as a method for this case study. Instead, the analysis and experiments have been performed with less advanced analytical tools in agreement with the literature. Finally, the study suggests the company to invest in training when the lack of knowledge in Lean production offers a limited understanding of the work to become more efficient and flexible.

Today many companies face problems with inventory management. The importance of adequate inventory management has become more evident, while organizations try to reduce their costs and increase their service level.

This master thesis was conducted at VSM Group AB in Huskvarna, which is a manufacturer that produces and delivers sewing machines to a worldwide market. VSM Group AB has problems with the management and the refilling of the work-in-process (WIP) inventories and also with lack of information about component balance and location in the production and material planning system.

Therefore, the purpose of the thesis was to improve the control of the WIP inventories and the information about the components in the production and material planning system. In order to achieve the purpose, interviews and observations were performed, theories in inventory management were reviewed and the production process was studied.

Afterwards solutions for improvements were proposed. To solve the management and refilling problem, a kanban ordering system was proposed, which would use kanban cards to order components from the storages to the WIP inventories. To develop the component information displayed in the production and material planning system, an additional feature was proposed to the system. So instead of showing one inventory balance for each component, the system would display balances for three different places in the factory: the goods arrival and quality control area, the storage and the production.

The proposed solutions can provide several benefits to the company. The kanban ordering system can increase the material handlers’ efficiency, set a standard refilling quantity and be a tool for reducing the WIP inventory levels. The more detailed information in the production and material planning system can improve the decision making for the purchasers and planners and give the ability to measure the flow and level of material inside the factory.

These solutions will provide a more appropriate inventory management to the company, with better control of the components and improved information quality.

This thesis is a subtask of the research project “Green Production System”, which is jointly launched and run by Volvo/Volvo Technology, Haldex, Saab and All-Emballage J.E. AB as industrial party, and Mälardalen University as academic party. The whole project is dedicated to develop “green production system” to be a competitive mean to Swedish automotive and manufacturing industry through four work packages, which are “Wet preconditions and frames of a green production system”, “Visualization of environmental impact and added value”, “Development and implementation of tools for green control and management” and “Development of guidelines for environmental value improvement and cost decrease” respectively. And this thesis is an effort to package 2. Value stream mapping is assumed to be a potentially effective tool to be developed for visualizing environmental wastes produced by production processes. Thereby, the focus of this thesis is on the transformation of VSM into EVSM (Environmental Value Stream Mapping). By reviewing literature, the reduction of environmental wastes is additionally counted into a characteristic of lean production. Meanwhile, seven environmental wastes are identified and defined. The development of EVSM is on an absolutely great degree based on the identification and measurement of environmental wastes. Thus, waste measurement and production data collection are supposed to be the prerequisite of EVSM implementation. In order to verify the supposition, a test practice was carried out in CH Industry AB, which is a metal processor. After the practical study, CH’s incompetence of working on EVSM is analysed, and advice is proposed. At the end of thesis, analysis of EVSM is made in terms of its prerequisite, difference from VSM, pros and cons, etc. In addition, suggestions for further research are given.

Ce travail a pour objectif d'etudier la contribution des principales classes de phospholipides a l'oxydation des viandes separees mecaniquement (vsm) et de preciser les mecanismes mis en jeu. Nos resultats montrent que: 1) dans les trois vsm de poulet et les deux de dinde etudiees, les phospholipides representent de 0,5 a 1,0 g/100 g de vsm. La phosphatidyl-ethanolamine (pe) et la phosphatidylcholine (pc) sont les deux phospholipides majeurs (de 150 a 360 mg/100 g et de 220 a 630 mg/100 g suivant la vsm). La pe est plus riche en acides gras polyinsatures (agpi) (50% dont moitie d'agpi a chaine longue: c#2#0, c#2#2) que la pc (30 d'agpi dont 1/3 d'agpi a chaine longue). Le rapport molaire agpi/hemoproteines varie de 330 a 400 suivant la vsm; 2) le suivi de la degradation des principales classes de phospholipides dans une vsm de poulet au cours de 5 mois de conservation a l'etat congele indique que la pe est le substrat privilegie de l'oxydation. Ainsi, en 5 mois, sa teneur diminue de 50% et sa quantite d'agpi de 60%. De plus, les cardiolipides subissent une legere degradation de leur agpi (15%). Par contre, la pc n'est pas alteree; 3) en systeme modele constitue de liposomes de phospholipides, la vitesse initiale d'oxydation est maximale pour un rapport agpi/hemoglobine de 450:1; 4) l'hydrolyse des phospholipides est un facteur favorisant leur oxydation puisque dans les systemes modeles ou la lipolyse est importante l'oxydation des phospholipides est tres rapide, alors qu'elle est faible en absence de lipolyse

O Value Stream Mapping (VSM) é uma ferramenta integrada na filosofia de gestão Lean que tem provado a sua eficiência no apoio à identificação e eliminação de desperdícios em diversas áreas da indústria e prestação de serviços. Este projeto tem como objetivo analisar a cadeia de valor do processo produtivo de pás eólicas na empresa Riablades através da aplicação do VSM. Utilizando esta ferramenta foram representadas as várias etapas que compõem o processo produtivo, as suas ligações e fontes de desperdício. Inicialmente é feito o mapeamento do fluxo de valor atual, identificando as atividades que acrescentam ou não valor ao produto final. De seguida é analisado o mapa resultante e são feitas propostas de melhoria utilizando os princípios Lean. Por fim, a partir dos resultados dessa análise é desenvolvido o mapa do estado futuro do processo produtivo.
The Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a tool integrated into the Lean management philosophy that has proven its effectiveness in supporting the identification and elimination of waste in various areas of industry and services. This project aims to analyze the value chain of the production process of wind blades in the company Riablades through the application of VSM. Using this tool the various stages that make up the production process, their connections and sources of waste were shown. Initially the value flow mapping of the current state is done, identifying the activities that add value or not to the final product. Then the resulting map is analyzed and proposals are made for improvement using Lean principles. Finally, from the results of this analysis are developed a future state map of the production process.

Leanproduction börjar i allt större utsträckning appliceras inom olika verksamheter. Filosofins fokus på kundvärde samt dess skapade av effektiva och felförebyggande processer lockar mängder av aktörer inom olika sektorer av marknaden. Då kundvärde bör vara fokus för samtliga verksamheter och effektiva, kvalitetssäkra processer är något att eftersträva bör filosofin lämpa sig inom fler områden än just produktion. Tjänsteverksamhet är ett marknadssegment där kundvärde är särskilt viktigt. Då målet med tjänsteverksamhet vanligen är att skapa en bra service och på så sätt addera kundvärde bör leankonceptet framgångsrikt kunna appliceras inom verksamheten. Dock är leanfilosofin huvudsakligen utformad för produktionsverksamhet och få konkreta riktlinjer finns om hur den kan appliceras inom andra verksamheter. Scania Finans är ett företag som nyligen påbörjat ett initiativ att införa lean i sin organisation.Det här examensarbetet syftar till att analysera möjligheten att applicera lean inom tjänsteverksamhet genom att använda Scania Finans som fallföretag. Företagets kreditprocess har analyserats med hjälp av värdeflödesanalyser för att finna slöseri i processen. För att finna problem och slöseri i Scania Finans kreditprocess utfördes processkartläggningar i workshops med medarbetarna samt tidstudier för att mäta ledtid och processtid. Därefter kunde värdeflödesanalyser av processen utföras.En anpassning av värdeflödesanalyser för tjänsteprocesser har utformats i examensarbetet. Dessa är inte helt i enlighet med de traditionella värdeflödeskartorna som upprättats inom produktionsverksamhet men mer applicerbara för tjänsteföretag. Värdeflödesanalyserna pekade ut tydliga problem samt allokerade slöseri i processen och visade sig därav vara ett mycket användbart verktyg inom tjänsteverksamhet. En ny definition av slöseri, gällande inom tjänsteverksamhet, har framtagits i examensarbetet. Dåflera av de problemområden som identifierats hos Scania Finans är kännetecknande för tjänsteföretag är dessa mer representativa slöserier inom tjänsteverksamhet än de som tidigare definierats. Bland annat lider företaget av instabila processer med mycket defekter och bristfällig information.Företaget har också en mycket hög variation i ledtid. Just variation är ett svårt problem i tjänsteprocesser då det råder en variation i efterfrågan, som inte kan elimineras. Därför är det viktigare för tjänsteföretag att hantera den rådande variationen snarare än att eliminera den. En bidragande orsak till de varierande ledtiderna är frekventa avbrott av processen som leder till förlorad koncentration. Avbrotten beror i huvudsak på kundens närvarande i processen, vilket även det är karakteristiskt för tjänsteverksamhet. Då avbrotten i många fall kan vara värdeskapande för kunden går de inte att helt eliminera. Ett annat huvudsakligt problem är det abstrakta flödet som gör det svårt att arbeta flödesorienterat i en tjänsteprocess. På grund av medarbetarnas arbete i parallella processer, de frekventa avbrotten samt det abstrakta flödet är det svårt för tjänsteföretag att ha ett fokus på flödeseffektivitet. Flera åtgärder har föreslagits i examensarbetet med syfte att förbättra kreditprocessen ur ett leanperspektiv och reducera de identifierade problemen. Examensarbetet visar hur leankonceptet kan användas för att förbättra en tjänsteprocess genom att reducera slöseri och på så sätt öka det adderade värdet till kunden. Det belyser även den problematik som råder vid en introduktion av lean inom tjänsteverksamhet. En anpassad modell för värdeflödesanalyser inom tjänsteprocesser finns redovisad i examensarbetet vilken har visat sig vara framgångsrik. Arbetet definierar även slöseri inom tjänsteverksamhet och visar problemområden som är representativa för tjänsteföretag, vilka inte är helt i enlighet med de slöserityper som tidigare definierats för produktionsverksamhet.
Different business sectors are increasingly applying lean production. The philosophys focus on customer value and its establishment of efficient and defect preventing processes appeals multitude actors in different market sectors. Since customer value should be a general focus for all organizations and efficient, quality proofed processes are main objectives, the lean philosophy should be suitable for more areas than just production. In particular, customer value is vital in the market segment of service business. Since the objective of service business is to create good service and thereby add customer value, a successful application of the lean concept in this particular segment should be possible. However, the lean philosophy is mainly designed to suit manufacturing companies and there are few concrete guidelines on its applications in other areas. The company ScaniaFinans AB has recently introduced an initiative to apply lean in their organization. This master thesis aims to analyze the possibility of applying lean in service business with ScaniaFinans as model. The sales process of the company has been analyzed with the use of value stream mapping in order to identify waste. Process mapping was conducted at workshops held with employees, in order to identify obstacles and waste in the sales process. Subsequently, a time study, where waiting times and process times were measured, was conducted. The mapped processes along with the time studys result were converted to value stream maps to enable value stream analysis. These analyses pointed out legible obstacles and allocated waste in the processes. They therefore proved to be a useful tool in service business. Some adjustments of the most common metrics and symbols were necessary but the value stream analyses still fulfilled their purpose; identifying waste in the process. Several identified obstacles at ScaniaFinans are characteristic in service business. For instance, the company suffers from unstable processes with several defects and inadequate information. It is possible for service companies to make tremendous improvements by increasing their process focus, which also was illustrated at ScaniaFinans. High variation in total lead time is also a main obstacle at ScaniaFinans. Standardization is a common lean tool in order to eliminate variation, although not applicable in service companies. Since handling a fluctuating demand is vital to service companies the standardization application is not suitable in that area.ScaniaFinans is therefore recommended to handle the variation with use of process control in order to attain a stable process. A factor increasing lead times at ScaniaFinans is frequent disruptions causing loss of concentration. The disruptions are mainly due to the participation of the customer in the process, which also is characteristic in service business. To attend the disruptions, ScaniaFinans are recommended to change the distribution of employees and accordingly make one individual responsible for all disruptions every day. This allows the remaining employees to execute tasks undisturbed and waste consisting loss of concentration is reduced. This master thesis illustrates how the lean concept can improve a service process by reducing waste and therefore increase the added customer value. The report implies how application of lean enables allocation and elimination of waste using value stream mapping in service companies. Since the main identified obstacles are characteristic to service companies the problem is general and is of interest for several actors in the service business.

The sector of small industrial companies has a problem with not being able to satisfy total market demand, mainly due to factories not capitalizing on their production capacity. Consequently, a method to solve downtime related problems has been proposed, which consists of applying 5S to reduce dead time stemming from disorder and uncleanliness, while simultaneously applying value stream mapping (VSM) to find the most efficient method to conduct processes. In conclusion, by implementing these tools in this manner, it was proven that businesses in this sector could operate with up to 73% efficiency.

The Master's Thesis reviews the application of Lean management methods in the healthcare sector. The theoretical section describes the background of Lean process management - its history, principles, methods and tools. The methods currently used to manage processes in the healthcare sector are then described. The practical section of the thesis tests whether these processes could be improved by implementing a Lean methodology. A project was undertaken in a healthcare centre where the principles, tools and methods described in the theoretical section were applied. The project consisted of five phases, according to DMAIC cycle. The conclusion of the Master Thesis summarises the findings and results which evidence the improvement of the processes in this specific healthcare centre after the implementation of a Lean methodology.

En la actualidad el mundo Retail ha tenido que diversificar y explorar diferentes propuestas de formatos en base a las necesidades de los clientes. Se han ido desarrollando tiendas físicas para clientes tradicionales pero existe un mercado online que en el mundo ha ido tomando una importante participación y que en el Perú está en crecimiento. Por este motivo el presente trabajo de investigación se busca proponer mejoras en el negocio Ecommerce o venta online en el proceso de multipicking, asegurando un proceso que agregue valor al cliente y a la empresa eliminando los desperdicios o mudas que se presenten utilizando la metodología de Lean Service y las herramientas de análisis necesarias para identificar las causas que generan las problemáticas identificadas como pedidos incompletos, demora en la entrega de los pedidos o las demoras en las reversiones de los cliente. El primer capítulo abordará los antecedentes, la teoría y la metodología de mejora seleccionada. El segundo capítulo presenta la situación actual de la empresa, el diagnóstico de la problemática en el proceso multipicking. En el tercer capítulo se determina la asignación de cada herramienta para la solución a las problemáticas detectadas y se presenta propuestas de mejora. El cuarto capítulo se muestra los resultados de la implementación de las mejoras y el análisis del impacto de la implementación aplicando la matriz de Leopold. Asimismo se muestra un análisis financiero del despliegue del proyecto en la empresa.
Currently, the Retail world has had to diversify and explore different proposals based on the needs of customers. Physical stores have been developed for traditional customers but there is an online market that in the world has been taking an important participation and that in Peru is growing. For this reason, the present research seeks to propose improvements in the Ecommerce business in the multipicking process, ensuring a process that adds value to the client and the company, eliminating the waste that are presented using Lean Service methodology and the necessary analysis tools to identify the causes that generate the problems identified as incomplete orders, delay in the delivery of orders or delays in customer reversals. The first chapter will deal with the background, the theory and the selected improvement methodology. The second chapter presents the current situation of the company, the diagnosis of the problem in the multipicking process. In the third chapter, the application of each tool for the solution to the problems detected is determined and proposals for improvement are presented. The fourth chapter shows the results of the implementation of the improvements and the analysis of the impact of the implementation applying the Leopold matrix. It also shows a financial analysis of the deployment of the project in the company.

En el presente trabajo se ha mejorado el lead time de reparación de equipos de construcción a través de la selección de una metodología de ingeniería denominada Six Sigma, para lo cual se utilizó la matriz multicriterio PJA (proceso de jerarquía analítica). Asimismo, logramos identificar los tiempos muertos por sub proceso, con la finalidad de medir los tiempos muertos en cada etapa del proceso. Por otro lado, planteamos las mejoras a través de técnicas de ingeniería de métodos, análisis de informe de capacidad six pack, gráficas MFV (mapeo de flujo de valor), entre otras, las cuales soportaron nuestra mejora de tiempo de hasta un 50 %. Asimismo, validamos el proceso con los cambios planteados en el software BIZAGI, el cual nos mostró un incremento de nuestra productividad en poco más del 40%. Finalmente, el análisis de sensibilidad con Montecarlo nos emitió una probabilidad mayor al 90% de que nuestro VAN (valor actual neto) sería mayor a MMUSD 3.00, lo cual demostraba que el proyecto era viable.
In this work it has been improved lead time equipment repair of construction machinery through the selection of an engineering methodology called Six Sigma, for which the multi matrix AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) was used. Also, we identify downtime by sub process, in order to measure dead times at each stage of the process. Furthermore, we propose improvements through methods engineering techniques, analysis capability report six pack, graphic VSM (Value Stream Mapping), among others, which endured our time improvement up to 50%. Also, we validate the process with the changes proposed in the BIZAGI software, which showed an increase in our productivity by just over 40%. Finally, the sensitivity analysis montercalo gave us greater than 90% probability that our NPV (net present value) would be higher than MMUSD 3.00, which showed that the project was viable.

Authors        Jonathan Kölemo (890303) and Simon Jensen (870212)                         Title              Goodbye to Inbound and Outbound waste - A case study at IKEA’s Distribution                      Centre, Älmhult   Background The DC in Älmhult is working in two administrative teams; Inbound and Outbound. The relationship between and inside the Inbound and Outbound teams are complex and unclear. This increases the risk for bad and unnecessary work. The teams’ are handling tasks regarding planning and scheduling for unloading and loading shipments. The complexity at the DC in Älmhult also makes it difficult for managers to control and understand the whole flow within the two teams. The problem is based on complicated and unsynchronized tasks, poor utilization of IT systems and lack of integration and standardization within the teams work.   Purpose        The purpose with the thesis is to identify wastes within the teams’ work, and thereby provide suggestions for improvements.                 Method         A positivist approach has been used as a scientific perspective throughout the study. The scientific approach is deductive and the research strategy is qualitative. From the theoretical and empirical material an analysis has been designed that eventually lead to a conclusion.   Results            The study shows that both the Inbound and Outbound teams’ processes consist of a number of wastes. By using One-piece-flow, Standardization, Capacity and FIFO theories, the wastes can be reduced or completely eliminated.   Conclusions The most critical wastes have been chosen and by combining the four improvement theories, reductions of unnecessary activities can be made. By implementing the suggested improvements, the number of unnecessary activities can be reduced, and the total process and lead times will decrease. By doing this, the Flow planners can focus on more important activities and the same amount of staff can handle increased throughput of goods.

Nowadays, the global economy imposes great competition between companies that creates an intense pressure. Due to this increasing competition, companies have to keep improving their process for becoming more efficient to lower costs while improving their quality level and providing a better service. A company that does not improve every year is a company that is dying. Although Kraft Foods Inc. is the world’s second largest food company, they also need to keep improving in order to maintain its competitive position on the market and this is why they have been implementing the Lean culture in France since 2007. They want to become more efficient by eliminating all the activities that the customer is not willing to pay for, defined as waste. Providing more value with fewer resources, goal of Lean manufacturing, should make Kraft Foods France even more competitive. However, in order to become Leaner, the nine plants of Kraft Foods Biscuit needed a structured method because the first difficulty of eliminating wastes lies in identifying them. The main purpose of this thesis was to develop one of the most important Lean tools to identify wastes called “Value Stream Mapping”. This master thesis will therefore explain and describe how mapping the value stream can help identifying and eliminating the wastes but also can be a priceless support to share a common vision of the value stream among managers. This tool should be seen as the starting point of any improvements projects since it allows identifying opportunities for improvement that will improve the bottom line of the company. VSM should be used to challenge the status quo and the behaviors of all employees in order to improve Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, Sustainability and Morale. This master thesis will deal with the two main missions I led in order to reach this goal. The first mission was to develop a standard of the Value Stream Mapping for Kraft Foods France. I was asked to participate in the structuralizing and in the standardization of the VSM tool for the company. The tool was first analyzed and then a taylor-made VSM tool was developed to meet the characteristics and needs of the food industry. The last step of this mission was to train managers and engineers so that they can lead VSM projects themselves, in any plants, that can help them identifying improvements to be done. The second mission was to apply this method in different production lines to show managers the effectiveness of the tool for identifying rooms for improvement that could increase the productivity of theses studied production lines. For example, the project at Granville’s plant, described in the last part of the thesis, shows what types of improvements can be identified thanks to a Value Stream Mapping project since this project led to a productivity improvement of 40 k€. On completion of this thesis, I wish to have contributed to the emergence of the good use of Value Stream Mapping tool at Kraft Foods that will help the company to keep improving and focusing on customers.

The aim of this project is to establish whether video self-modelling is an effective approach in decreasing fear responses in children with ASD aged between five and 15 years. Participants were recruited through a flyer that was posted in the Autism New Zealand Canterbury newsletter and the Autism in New Zealand Facebook page. Three participants were recruited who were aged 11 to 12 years, who had a diagnosis of ASD and a fear. This study used a single-case, AB design replicated across the three participants. The participants met with the researcher to discuss their fear and what the study entailed. Baseline measures were obtained and videos were created to depict the child being in the same environment as their feared stimulus. Participants watched their videos for a two-week period then the baseline measures were repeated twice. Two out of the three participants showed some increase in steps achieved in their fear hierarchies. A similar pattern was found with the self-reported levels of fear, one participant showed a decrease in post intervention measure, the second showed variability and the third was not able to complete the intervention due to his extreme fear response. The results of this study reflect some of the literature, which suggest that while VSM can result in rapid learning, in some cases it may not work for all participants and individual differences can account for some of this variability. Due to the variation in the results and individual differences, it is difficult to determine the effects of this type of intervention for fears and phobias in children with ASD. Limitations on this study included the number of participants, as a larger number would have provided more data on the effects of VSM for different participants and the amount of time that was allocated to complete the study.

The desire to develop a holistic framework for knowing and modelling in human enterprises is not new. Methodologies, such as Systems Dynamics, Soft Systems and the Viable Systems Model all claim a holistic perspective. Each of these approaches emphasises the interrelatedness of `things', rather than the `things' themselves. Thus, they avoid the possible fragmentation that can occur when elements within a situation are treated as if they exist independently. Unfortunately, the systems approaches flounder because they fail to reconcile knowledge with the path that brings it into being, or to satisfactorily deal with the concepts of order or communication in language. The Thesis, therefore, provides a greater clarification of these issues, in the light of enactive cognitive science, chaos theory and contemporary theories on dialogue. As a result, a new framework is presented, for knowing and modelling in human enterprises, that is based on our `new' understanding of holism. The organisational context of the Thesis is provided by two generic models, both developed by the author (a model of Duopoly Competition and a model of Chaos Control ), together with a case study of the Danish hearing aid manufacturer Oticon. The Thesis concludes by presenting various insights arising from our new frame of reference and reflecting on their challenges for organisations.

Today it is important for production companies to create an overview of how the company is conducted to maintain its competitiveness. Mapping processes and material flows visualize production areas that create a direct value for the customer, while remaining areas or activities that do not add a direct value  should be minimized or eliminated. In order to identify material flows and non- value creation activities, complex models are required that can be combined in different ways. The study is based on a case study of an international mass-producing company that is partly located in the middle of Sweden. The factory studies four production lines, each producing the same product type but of different sizes. The aim of this survey is to create a deeper insight in a production process cost and material flows by combining a process-calibration method with methods for calculating the efficiency of processes. The first model used is a mapping process and material flow model to shorten lead times. The 2nd model used is a model that graphically shows which value and non-value creation activities to use the result in an efficiency calculation. The result consists of efficiency calculation, which shows that production Line 1 was streamlined by 19.12%, Line 2 by 6.68%, Line 3 by 18.73% and Line 4 by 4.77%. The goal of efficiency calculations is to achieve an optimal method where the efficiency is 100%.
I dagsläget är det viktigt för produktionsföretag att skapa en överblick över hur verksamheten bedrivs för att upprätthålla sin konkurrensförmåga. Att kartlägga processer och materialflöden synliggör områden i produktionen som skapar ett direkt värde för kunden, medan de resterande områden eller aktiviteter som inte tillför ett direkt värde bör minimeras eller elimineras. För att kunna identifiera materialflöden och de icke-värdeskapande aktiviteter krävs komplicerade modeller som kan kombineras på olika sätt. Studien är baserad på en fallstudie på ett internationellt massproducerande företag som delvis är beläget i Mellansverige. I fabriken studeras fyra produktionslinjer som alla tillverkar samma produkttyp men av olika storlekar. Syftet med den här studien är att skapa en djupare insikt i en produktionsprocess kostnader och materialflöden genom att kombinera en processkartläggningsmetod med metoder för att beräkna effektivitet. Den första modellen används för att kartlägga processer och materialflöden med avseende på att förkorta ledtider. Nästa steg är att använda en modell som grafiskt visar vilka aktiviteter som är värde- och icke-värdeskapande för att sedan kunna använda resultatet i en effektivitetsberäkning. Det sista steget består av effektivitetsberäkning och resultatet blev då att produktionslinje 1 effektiviserades med 19,12%, linje med 2 6,68%, linje 3 med 18,73% och linje 4 med 4,77%. Syftet med effektivitetsberäkningarna är att nå ett optimalt läge där effektiviteten är 100%.

Genom fokusering kring de aktiviteter som tillför värde hos kunden i slutprodukten kan företag reducera och eliminera oönskade slöserier inom tillverkningsprocessen. Ett verktyg som utvecklats och används för att eliminera dessa oönskade aktiviteter så som lagerhållning är Value stream mapping (VSM).   Problemformulering: Hur kan man identifiera slöserier samt dess förbättringsmöjligheter för att möjliggöra en högre produktionskapacitet genom frigörandet av anläggningsyta?¨   Syfte: Genom användandet av VSM som modell, identifiera slöserier och kostnadseffektiva förbättringsmöjligheter.   Metod: Denna fallstudie har utförts på ett företag som arbetar inom metallindustrin. Större delen av datainsamlingen har tagits från företagets egna dokumenterande data samt intervjuer med anställda och observationer under de besök författarna genomförde.   Slutsatser: Genom att använda VSM som en modell har författarna lyckats identifiera fallföretagets största faktorer till slöserier samt ge förslag och underlag till framtida förbättrings implementationer av förbättringsstrategier. Lean is an umbrella term for a powerful combination of techniques to maximize customer value by minimizing waste and achieving continuous flow through a sustainable culture of continuous improvement. The term ―lean is used in the U.S. for what was originally created as the "Toyota Production System" by the Japanese carmaker. It is so fashionable since it was born that it’s been widely used in the manufacturing industry during the past decades all over the world. No matter in the opinion of insiders or outsiders, this is a magical word stands for discovering and eliminating discreet wastes, reducing resources requirement and time demand for production, making the manufacturing process efficient and cost effective and eventually building the sustainable competitive advantage of the organization. There’s already a world of books discussing the implementations. But as for the service delivery process, especially within the telecom industry, there’s no qualitative research carried out to check the validation of lean tool yet. Most researchers still remain on the theoretical level, arguing and debating on the applicability. The objective of this research is to fill in this research niche, check the possibility of using lean tool, naming VSM, to study and redesign the service delivery process in a qualitative way. The research question comes to how to apply the tool in a qualitative way and exam the both sides of the coin. The author investigated on the service delivery process performance in the Business-As-Usual projects and the key performance indicators of the case company business unit to find out any inconsistencies. One of the powerful lean tools - VSM is used step by step, node by node to identify existing discreet wastes. Based on the lean philosophy and literature reviews, potential possible improvements are proposed to eliminate the wastes, afterwards an ideal new VSM is created, with which it is able to dramatically reduce the resources required to seize customer value, satisfy the same amount of customer demand, increase customer satisfaction, make the company focusing on continuous improvement, and in the end move the company to a higher position in the field with stronger competence to win more market share. This research work is conducted as a single case study under the lean philosophy by collecting and studying qualitative data using various semi-structured interviews and archival data analysis. Six applicable solutions to lead the organization lean is proposed, and based on which, a brand new Optimization Focus Matrix is introduced to have a broader applicability. Possible benefit, difficulties in implementation and potential risks are also presented. The thesis ends with conclusion, answer to the research questions and discussion on the thesis limitation & future research direction.

With increasing demands from customers, companies face the challenges of shortening the new product development (NPD) period, reducing development cost and increasing development efficiency. High quality and efficiency of NPD can increase the chance for companies to be competitive on the market. Forming up cross-functional teams becomes a popular way of maximizing the knowledge then increase the development quality and efficiency. However, it is challenging to integrate the resources from different functions and even more challenging when the resources are from different countries. To overcome the integration challenges can increase the efficiency of NPD projects therefore finally win global market shares. This study’s purpose is to identify and analyze integration challenges experienced by a verification team involved in global NPD and to suggest how those challenges can be managed by answering two research questions: 1) What are the integration challenges with the current work process encountered by the global verification team? 2) How can the integration challenges be met in the improved work process? The case study is used as the research method in order to get deep insight of the challenges that a global verification team faces. VSM Group AB, an international leading sewing company is selected as the case company.  The case team, a global verification team locates both in Sweden and China, plays the role of verification work within NPD process. The case team verifies the design and new products in the process.  Through interviews, observation and literature reviews, the challenges in this global verification team are identified. It is found that the case team needs to overcome language barriers, culture difference, task planning and formalization and standardization on work performance during integration. Based on the investigations, a set of solutions are proposed in the end to meet the challenges. These solutions are an improved work process, work performance system, training program and uniformed documentation. These proposals are inspired by the integration mechanisms such as formalization and standardization, special reports etc and then fit them into the case team context. By simulation and evaluation the solutions within the global verification team, the feedback on the proposals helped for improvement. This case study at VSM is an empirical example of implementation of integration mechanisms into a real life context.

Globalization is rising progressively, with companies facing many challenges and complexities in recent times. Also, the demand for high-quality products at a lower price is driving companies to change their production systems. Lean production is one of the proven approaches to gain an advantage. The lean approach is about eliminating activities that do not add value and delivering the best possible qualitative product to the customer. Implementation of lean is feasible in any organization irrespective of its size or industry. For initiating lean in an organization, there are many tools and techniques available. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is one such tool that is economical and easy to implement. VSM identifies waste and discovers opportunities for improvements as it observes material and information flow from the collection of raw materials to delivery to customers (Forno et al., 2014).The current research is based on a case study performed at an aircraft heater manufacturing firm, which is willing to implement lean for an efficient production cycle. Since the company is not subjected to the lean methodology, the study attempts to understand the VSM implementation process and its favorable circumstances. VSM has been implemented and data were analyzed. The results obtained from this study concludes that, VSM is a suitable technique to initiate lean ways of work in an SME that lacks sufficient knowledge and experience on lean.In addition, successful removal of wastage and increase in productivity are the key factors, necessary to initiate lean in an organization from a technical point of view whereas management support and acceptance of change is essential from an organizational point of view. However, there are few barriers and challenges that the company may have to face. Besides, the study suggests that it is better to have a lean training or a workshop before its implementation. This study will lay the foundation for future studies related to the initiation of lean methodology through implementing VSM when the case company is not familiar with the process as there are very few studies on this topic.

Saab Component Maintenance in Linköping, Sweden, offers maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for civilian and military aircraft components. Lately, the department has struggled with slow throughput rates, despite various counteracting attempts. Studies show, that large parts of the delays derive from the logistics department where goods arrive and dispatch. Therefore, Saab wants to carry out an extensive analysis of the department in order to further investigate what is causing its slow throughput rates. The thesis begins with extensive mapping over Component Maintenances whole value stream to find out how departments interact with each other and which role individual departments have in the total supply chain. Out of 13 000 different part numbers, components were divided into five product families. From statistical history of package frequency, two value streams were chosen as scientific research objects, where improvements of which show great potential to have serious positive effects. From activity studies, observations, workshops and interviews various elements were identified as obstructing in the logistics department’s material and information flow. Activity studies show, that 55, 8% of activities performed in the arriving goods department were considered as value adding time. In addition, 67, 9% of activities performed in the dispatch goods department were considered as value adding time (where over half of the value adding time was spent in administrative systems). 11 critical challenges and five associated root causes have been identified in the arriving goods department. 14 critical challenges and five associated root causes have been identified in the dispatch goods department. To reduce and prevent further waste, the thesis recommends 14 critical actions in order to reduce the amount of elements obstructing the flow of material and information at Component Maintenance. In addition, recommended changes have been illustrated in a Future State Map for each department respectively on a process level. By performing tasks in new sequences where material and information flow progresses in a parallel synchronized rate, the benefits of a balanced lean flow could be demonstrated in the dispatch department. Shortest lead time, from finished component to packaged and booked shipment, was noted for small units and took 20 minutes.

The objective of this project is to improve productivity and efficiency for the inbound material handling operations in the warehouse of DC Älmhult. After three weeks pre-study in place of the distribution center, the authors have observed several problems existing in the current production, among which three types of wastes are found and analyzed by using VSM that are pick and drop, operator waiting time and inefficient transport. Two typical cases chosen from the inbound production are analyzed to reflect the current process and address problems. Fish-bone tool is used to identify wastes and roots. To eliminate or reduce the wastes, recommendations and solutions are developed by creating continuous flow combining with internal transport optimization. Future-state VSMs are drawn based on the suggested changes in line with continuous flow. Different productions models are simulated by elaborately developed excel sheets. A „distance table‟ is developed by using Microsoft Excel to help the loading or unloading leaders with the gate steering function so as to minimize internal transport distance. A new layout of the conveyor system is also suggested to lower the idle transport rate.

Detta examensarbete syftar till att inom industriell förrådsverksamhet undersöka hur ett internt materialflöde kan bidra till en effektivare produktion. Studien avser även att redogöra för hur slöseri i ett internt materialflöde kan reduceras inom industriell förrådsverksamhet.Genom empiriskt data från fallföretaget parallellt med relevant litteraturstudie har teorier tagits fram för hur detta kan genomföras.Vid kartläggning av nuläget har en värdeflödesanalys tillämpats hos förrådsverksamheten som är ansvarig för att distribuera material. Därefter har MUDA tillämpats för att upplysa slöseri.På grund av omfattning och tidsbrist kunde endast ett av flertal områden analyserats. Med hjälp av intervjuer har forskaren kunnat fokusera på endast det som ansetts vara det mest kritiska problemet för att förse riggen med material i god tid. Detta då fallföretaget strävar efter att ha så korta ställtider som möjligt. För att uppnå detta är det viktigt att så mycket som möjligt förbereds innan omställning. Därför är det viktigt med ett effektivt materialflöde för att kunna förse riggen med material i rätt tid.Då komponenterna lagras i stora kvantiteter på rullar sker det att det endast finns en rulle av vissa komponenter vilket skapar störningar då samma komponent använts till två eller flera jobb samtidigt.Arbetet resulterar i att fallföretaget bör jobba med ständiga förbättringar samt att tillämpa en metod för förebyggande av störningar inom det interna materialflödet.

Instrument Control Sweden (ICS) is a software company that develops NATO STANAG 4586 compatible ground station software for control of unmanned systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). To perform testing and demonstration of the ground station software ICS needs a realistic UAV simulator that implements the STANAG 4586 protocol. This thesis studies what methods are best suited for the rapid development of such a simulator.

One goal with the project was to examine what existing flight simulator systems and flight dynamics models can be used to rapidly develop a UAV simulator. Another goal was to design and implement such a simulator. It is found that it’s possible to quickly develop a UAV simulator based on existing projects such as the flight simulator FlightGear, the simulation framework OpenEaagles and the flight dynamics model (FDM) JSBSim.

The design of the simulator is modular, object-oriented and features real-time design techniques. The main application is a simulation of a Vehicle Specific Module, which implements the STANAG 4586 protocol. Another module based on the OpenEaagles framework simulates the aircraft and its subsystems. A third module consists of the JSBSim FDM and simulates the flight dynamics and movements of the aircraft under the forces and moments affecting it.

Globale Krisen, Rohstoffengpässe oder Preisschwankungen stellen die globalisierten Lieferkettensysteme der westlichen Produzenten vor große Herausforderungen. Das Konzept der Kreislaufwirtschaft ist eine Möglichkeit, sich angesichts dieser Herausforderungen robuster zu positionieren, um weniger abhängig von äußeren Einflüssen zu sein. Die größte Hürde bei dem Aufbau von Netzwerken für Kreislaufwirtschaftsprozesse ist die Identifikation von potentiellen Partnern auf Basis von Stoffstrommodellen. Ein erfolgreiches Mapping ist von vielen Faktoren abhängig. Aktuell existiert kein Ansatz, um die Stoffströme so zu modellieren, dass die Darstellung und Berechnung für eine Partnersuche in der Kreislaufwirtschaft geeignet ist. Um der Komplexität, sowohl der Stoffstrommodellierung, als auch der Partnersuche gerecht zu werden, wird hier ein MBSE-Ansatz gewählt - ein überlegener Modellierungsansatz im Detaillierungsgrad und der Adaptionsfähigkeit. Das Modell verknüpft die 3 Hauptelemente der Wertstromanalyse (Produktionsprozess, Materialfluss und Geschäftsprozess) und ermöglicht dadurch neuartige Kennzahlen zu ermitteln. Diese Kennzahlen und die detaillierte Modellierung schaffen eine verbesserte Informationslage, auf Basis derer die Effektivität der Partnersuche in der Kreislaufwirtschaft signifikant gesteigert wird. Nach einer theoretischen Herleitung der Modellierungslogik und der Erweiterung des bestehenden Ansatzes der nachhaltigen Wertstromanalyse (engl. Sustainable Value Stream Mapping – Sus-VSM) wird anhand eines Beispiels das MBSE-Modell implementiert und validiert. Dieser MBSE-Ansatz besitzt das Potential, die Beschreibung industrieller Produktions- und Herstellungsprozesse erheblich zu verfeinern und dadurch Analysen und Berechnungen zu optimieren, was zu einer besseren Vernetzung der Industrie führt. Die dadurch identifizierten industriellen Symbiosen fördern die Kreislaufwirtschaft maßgeblich und helfen Ressourcen nachhaltiger zu nutzen.

The industrial plant floor is increasingly pressured by stakeholders (society, customers, government, etc.) to adopt a sustainable philosophy to achieve the reduction of environmental, social and economic impact in manufacturing processes; and it is the manufacturing phase that contributes most to the environmental impact. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze, through a case study, the applicability of lean manufacturing, mainly the practical value stream mapping of the flow of value to measure sustainability, that is, to measure environmental losses, social losses and economic losses from the manufacturing process of a specific product (in this case a water-cooled cable manufacturing process). As a result of the research, it was possible to identify and quantify the economic, environmental and social losses at each stage of the manufacturing process, such as lead time, excess and loss of water, energy and raw materials, and potential risks health and safety of employees.
O chão-de-fábrica industrial é cada vez mais pressionado pelas partes interessadas (sociedade, clientes, governo, etc.) para a adoção da filosofia sustentável para a obtenção da redução do impacto ambiental, social e econômico nos processos de fabricação; e é a fase de fabricação que mais contribui, principalmente, para o impacto ambiental. Portanto, este trabalho tem como proposta analisar, através de um estudo de caso, a aplicabilidade da manufatura enxuta, principalmente da prática de mapeamento de fluxo de valor para medir a sustentabilidade, ou seja, medir as perdas ambientais, as perdas sociais e as perdas econômicas do processo de fabricação de um produto específico (no caso, um processo de fabricação de cabos refrigerados a água). Como resultado de pesquisa, foi possível identificar e quantificar as perdas econômicas, ambientais e sociais em cada etapa do processo de fabricação, como, por exemplo, o lead time, excesso e perda de água, de energia e de matéria-prima, e os riscos potenciais à saúde e segurança dos colaboradores.

This thesis is a case study centred around a professional development workshop, developed to teach video self modelling techniques using video self modelling to teachers and other professionals, evaluated from a practitioner researcher‘s perspective. Observational learning, social learning, social cognitive and self model theories are discussed as they relate to video self modelling and professional development and informed the structure and delivery of the workshop. The empirical literature base of video self model is documented. The thesis concludes with a discussion of learning that has accrued throughout this study. This learning relates to the use of VSM and the experiential learning that the author, as both researcher and practitioner has gained from the work carried out in developing, using, and evaluating the workshop to support VSM. The six participants were successful in completing a video self model. The thesis recognises and discusses the complexity of interactions between empirical and theoretical investigation. In a similar way it discusses the complexity of interactions between traditional forms of research and practitioner research.

Value Stream Mapping is a common tool used in a lot of instances in today’s industrieswho have adopted any kind of Lean initiatives. However, Value Stream Mapping (VSM) may not always fit to the best extent and intention of the industry applying it; therefore a need for tailoring certain aspects of it have been seen in some cases where the original tool has not been enough. However there is little research on how to adopt VSM towards the tire industry, it is the case that some adaptation is needed in order to fully map the value the chain is trying to capture as seen by some authors who use VSM on other industries. This leads to conclude that further research is needed in order to see the benefits and chal-lenges in the creating of a tailored value stream tool in order to understand how it would affect the company its applied on as well as increasing the knowledge of its capabilities and drivers for it application. The impact this research would have is to begin bridging a gap of the usage of how a Tai-lored Value Stream Mapping (TVSM) tool would affect when applied to a specific industry. For this paper, a case study within a Tire Company located in Europe, who stated that they had issues regarding their current usage and utilization of VSM, was conducted. The com-pany has projects going all over the globe but sees a lack of initiative and success without the direct involvement of its central plant. The purpose of this research is to investigate the perceived impact as well as the benefits and challenges of utilizing a company TVSM, in-stead of a standardized one, taking into consideration both particularities of the industry, as well as the culture of the firm. Also an understanding is sought to recognize the motiva-tions that drove the Tire Company to choose a tailored approach. The research was conducted as a qualitative single case study involving three different sitesbelonging to the tire industry located in Europe. It is built upon both a theoretical part, comprised by a literature review of the concepts of VSM, Lean and TVSM; and an empiri-cal part derived from the case. The Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews as well as participant observations, supported by secondary data collected from the company in form of written documents concerning the internal training of VSM. The findings concluded that, the reasons for sustaining a TVSM are its ease of use, and ability to reach out and be understood by people with little to no training in VSM’s. The company fitted training documents would decrease the training needed and the time spent doing so. Some other benefits were the empowerment of employees and the sharing of knowledge across multiple sites in a standardized company language. Albeit with the chal-lenge of creating and upholding such documents and training, compelling the company to have experts with knowledge of VSM and the company processes and culture with the added challenge of also maintaining regularly updates as the company moves forward. Implementation of a tailored approach is practical where there has been identified that it exists a gap between different plants or departments, local or globally, regarding knowledge or experience when there is a requirement for standardisation, communication and need for change.

Returflödet kommer undersökas genom en fallstudie på ett företag. Genom att identifiera slöserier enligt Lean Production förväntas denna uppsats eliminera eller åtminstone reducera identifierade slöserier. Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen är att identifiera slöserier i returflödet och presentera förbättringsförslag som reducerar nämnda slöserier. Metod: Studien har utförts som en kvalitativ fallstudie med ett deduktivt angreppssätt och ett postpositivistisk synsätt.  Primärdatan har samlats in genom semi-strukturerade intervjuer och observationer. Slutsats: Efter en genomförd Value Stream Mapping analyserar författarna returflödes nuvarande tillstånd. Därefter identifieras slöserier och orsakerna till varför slöserierna uppstår. I slutsatsen presenteras förslag på förbättringar såsom att öka andelen webbreturer och minska avstånden inom lagret.

Questa tesi rappresenta il risultato di una forte collaborazione fra il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale e Scienze Matematiche (DIISM) dell’Università Politecnica delle Marche e Teuco S.p.A., un’impresa manifatturiera italiana leader nella produzione di vasche idromassaggio, docce, minipiscine ed arredo bagno. Il tema di ricerca sviluppato riguarda l’ottimizzazione ed il miglioramento del processo di controllo qualità dei beni in ingresso attraverso l’implementazione di innovativi modelli operativi di Total Quality Management (TQM) e di Supply Chain Management (SCM) lungo l’intera catena di fornitura di cui Teuco è il punto focale, in quanto situata tra i suoi fornitori ed il suo mercato. Questo lavoro di ricerca discute di metodi e modelli per la gestione e schedulazione delle attività di controllo qualità dei prodotti in ingresso in aziende lean. In particolare, lo scopo finale è l’implementazione di sistemi di gestione non invasivi che ottimizzino il processo di controllo qualità in accettazione in termini di tempo e costi, ma mantenendo e assicurando allo stesso tempo il livello di qualità richiesto dall’azienda e dal mercato. Quindi, iniziando da un’analisi As-Is dell’attuale processo di controllo qualità, metodi e tecniche di ingegneria industriale sono stati studiati per essere applicati (talvolta anche in modo non convenziona- le) nel miglioramento dell’efficienza (considerando tempo e costi) e dell’efficacia (considerando gli aspetti qualitativi) del processo. La definizione e l’implementazione di un miglior processo di controllo qualità di beni in entrata, supportato da metodologie di ingegneria e sistemi di supporto decisionali ben stabiliti, permette di creare valore e vantaggio competitivo nel processo di approvvigionamento dell’impresa. Infatti, questo lavoro nasce proprio dalla necessità di creare e implementare nella fabbrica italiana di Teuco S.p.A. una struttura ta procedura di controllo qualità di prodotti in entrata che abbia caratteristiche lean. La filosofia del Total Quality Control ha tracciato le linee guida per la reingegnerizzazione del processo di controllo qualità in accettazione attraverso lo sviluppo e l’integrazione di tecniche efficaci ed efficienti quali Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA), Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Cost Analysis, Lot Acceptance Sample Plan (LASP), Queueing Theory (QT) e Supplier Evaluation and Monitoring (SEM). In fine, questa tesi propone un’applicazione pratica attraverso l’analisi e la descrizione di uno specifico caso di studio. Nella parte finale sono poi analizzati i risultati ottenuti sia per il caso di studio sia per l’intero processo di controllo qualità in accettazione di Teuco per gli anni che vanno dal 2011 al 2014.
The proposed thesis represents the result of a strong collaboration between the Department of Industrial Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (DIISM) of the “Politecnica University of Marche” and Teuco S.p.A., an Italian manufacturing enterprise leader in the production of hot tubs, showers, spas and bathroom furniture. The developed research theme concerns the optimization and improvement of the quality control process of inbound goods implementing innovative operative models and techniques about Total Quality Management (TQM) and Supply Chain Management (SCM) along the supply chain where Teuco is the focal point, because placed between his suppliers and his market; research work discusses the methods and models for managing and scheduling the quality control activities of inbound products in lean factories. Particularly, the final purpose is the implementation of a non-invasive management system of this part of the quality control activity that optimizes the process in terms of time and costs, but maintaining and assuring at the same time the quality level requested by the company and by the market. Therefore, starting to an As-Is analysis of the current quality control process, industrial engineering techniques and methods have been studied (sometimes even used in a non-conventional way) to be applied for improving efficiency (considering costs and time) and effectiveness (considering the quality aspects) of the process. The definition and implementation of a better quality control process of inbounds goods, supported to a well-established engineering methodologies and decisional support systems, allows to create values and competitive advantages in the procurement process of the enterprise. In fact, this work comes from the necessity to create and implement a structured and lean procedure of quality control on incoming items in the Italian factory of Teuco S.p.A. Total Quality Control philosophy has laid down the guidelines for the reengineering of the quality control process in acceptance through the development and integration of efficacy and efficiency techniques such as Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA), Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Cost Analysis, Lot Acceptance Sample Plan (LASP), Queueing Theory (QT) and Supplier Evaluation and Monitoring (SEM). Finally, this thesis proposes a practical case study to describe and analyze the application of the technique just listed. The obtained results, both for the case study and for the quality control process in acceptance of Teuco, are discussed and analyzed in the final part of the work.

Devido aos riscos que apresentam à saúde pública e ao ambiente, os agrotóxicos são regulados e fiscalizados pelo Estado. Muito dos problemas que vem ocorrendo com relação aos agrotóxicos são consequências da dificuldade do poder público em cumprir com a sua obrigação de proteger o ambiente e a saúde da população. Em Santa Catarina, várias entidades públicas têm responsabilidades específicas com relação aos agrotóxicos. Dentre elas encontra-se a Companhia Integrada de Desenvolvimento Agrícola de Santa Catarina (CIDASC), empresa pública responsável por controlar o comércio de agrotóxicos no estado. Esta dissertação tem por objetivos gerais identificar os principais problemas enfrentados no controle de agrotóxicos e afins realizado pela CIDASC por meio do uso do modelo do sistema viável (VSM) e a proposição de melhorias necessárias para que o controle de agrotóxicos e afins realizado pela CIDASC torne-se um sistema viável, conforme a concepção de Stafford Beer. O VSM pode ser empregado em qualquer tipo de organização. Baseado em conceitos da cibernética, o VSM reúne o conjunto de leis, axiomas, princípios e teoremas que, se empregados de maneira adequada, permitirá a viabilidade de qualquer organização. De acordo com o VSM, uma organização poderá ser considerada viável se apresentar um conjunto de cinco sistemas e com inter-relacionamentos específicos tornando-a capaz de sobreviver em um ambiente particular. O VSM foi empregado no modo diagnóstico, com o propósito de comparar o modelo com a realidade observada, visando identificar falhas, pontos fracos ou ausência de elementos essenciais para a viabilidade. Foram utilizadas como fontes a documentação, observação direta e observação participante. O diagnóstico permitiu perceber que há graves problemas no funcionamento do sistema de interesse, os quais estão comprometendo a sua viabilidade. Para tornar um sistema viável, há necessidade de melhorias em sua estrutura geral, no sentido de tornar o sistema de interesse viável de acordo com a concepção de Stafford Beer.

Abstract : Because of the risks to public health and the environment, pesticides are regulated and supervised by the State. Many problems related to pesticides are consequences of government's difficulty to comply with its mission that is to protect the environment and people's health. In Santa Catarina State, several public entities have specific responsibilities related to pesticides. Among them is the CIDASC, a State company responsible for pesticides trade control. This research aims to identify the main problems faced pesticides control carried by CIDASC with the use the viable system model (VSM) and to propose improvements for the pesticides control and how make it a viable system according to Stafford Beer's model. The VSM can be employed in any type organization. Based on cybernetics concepts, the VSM is the set of laws, axioms, theorems and principles that, if used appropriately, will enable the viability of any organization. According to the VSM, an organization can be considered viable if has a set of five systems and inter-specific relationships making it able to survive in an environment particular. The VSM was employed in diagnostic mode, in order to compare the model with the observed reality, to identify gaps, weaknesses or lack of essential for viability. It was used as documentation source, direct observation and participant observation. The diagnosis noticed that there are serious problems in the functioning of the system of interest, which are compromising their viability. To make as viable, improvements are required in their general structure, in order to make the system of interest viable in accordance with the design of Stafford Beer.

För att upprätthålla sin konkurrenskraft krävs det idag att ett fokus läggs på att ständigt förbättra sina processer inom organisationen. Detta faller sig logiskt, men att ta fram underlag för vilka förbättringsåtgärder som bör implementeras till processen kan vara svårt. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur value stream mapping (VSM) tillsammans med diskret händelsestyrd simulering (DES) kan användas inom lastningsprocesser hos hamnliggande logistikverksamheter för att kartlägga processen, identifiera flaskhalsar samt att undersöka det teoretiska utfallet vid implementation av potentiella förbättringsåtgärder. Svaret på detta genererades via en fallstudie på SCA Logistics där en lastningsprocess analyserades från ett av deras lager som start till slutet av processen när produkten är lastad på ett fartyg. Först skapades en VSM samt en DES-modell av nuläget. Nulägets VSM bidrog till en översikt över den aktuella processen och till att validera DES-modellen. Därefter med Lean-principer som grundpelare och med hjälp av intervjuer kunde tre förbättringsåtgärder identifieras. Dessa förbättringsåtgärder applicerades till DES-modellen en i taget för att undersöka hur de påverkar systemet. De två framstående förbättringsåtgärderna testades även ihop. Resultatet visade på att processen blev mer effektiv, i form av kortare ledtid, och två nya VSM togs fram för att bidra med ytterligare visualiserande information. Åtgärderna har andra spärrar i praktiken som inte visas via varken DES eller VSM såsom höga kostnader eller hinder i lagerförhållanden. Undersökningen ledde till den slutsatsen att VSM kan användas som komplement till DES för att bidra med ett teoretiskt underlag för huruvida en förbättringsåtgärd bör implementeras. Som rekommendation bör även en kostnadsnyttoanalys genomföras för att undersöka huruvida nyttan uppväger för kostnaden.
