‘Literary compositions of the scrolls collections’ shows that the literary nature of the scroll collections would suggest that they originally belonged to one or more libraries rather than to archives for storing documents. The term ‘library’ is unsuitable, however, as a descriptor of a collection made up of texts from different sources. The corpus of scrolls comprises a heterogeneous collection of writings: from the sectarian to those belonging to Second Temple Judaism. Certain texts, such as the Genesis Apocryphon that gives more information on Abram and Sarai’s journey through Egypt, provid

As they present few immediate references to resurrection, scholars have questioned the extent to which this was important to the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls. This chapter provides a reading of scrolls that do feature resurrection, especially the Messianic Apocalypse and Pseudo-Ezekiel. Other scrolls, like the Thanksgiving Hymns, suggest that the discourse of resurrection was known among the authors of the scrolls, yet frequently utilized in more metaphorical ways. Taken together, the evidence suggests the profile of a religious movement that was still in the dynamic process of receiving th

‘New light on the Hebrew Bible’ investigates what the Dead Sea Scrolls can tell us about the textual diversity and canonicity of the Hebrew Bible. Before the scrolls were discovered, Hebrew manuscripts generally dated back to the medieval period. The Qumran texts, dating to between 250 bce and 100 ce, tell us what the Bible was like before its standardization. Errors from copying gave rise to different text-types, and the Dead Sea Scrolls showed that there were far more text-types than previously thought. Variations in readings of the Hebrew Bible and other ancient sources show there was great

The Dead Sea Scrolls have shed light on the canonization of the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible in the Second Temple period. They provide us with exemplars of their biblical texts and how they used them in an authoritative manner. ‘The canon, authoritative scriptures, and the scrolls’ explains that the sectarian concept of authoritative scriptures seemed to reflect a dual pattern of authority by which the traditional biblical texts served as the source of the sectarian interpretation that in turn was defined by it. The authority was graded, beginning with the biblical books and extending to othe

This is the first major commentary in English on Pesher Habakkuk for forty years. It elucidates the nature of 1QpHab as the earliest commentary on the prophecy of Habakkuk by a detailed study of the biblical quotation and sectarian interpretation. This commentary provides a new edition of the scroll, including new readings, and detailed palaeographical, philological, exegetical, and historical notes and discussion. It shows that the pesherist imitates the allusive style of the oracles of Habakkuk and also draws on lexemes, phrases, and themes from other biblical texts and Jewish sources. It sh

This chapter examines the story of the internecine struggle between the two Hasmonean brothers, Hyrcanus II and Aristobulus II, which brought the Hasmonean commonwealth to its end. Only in Josephus is the story of the murder of a righteous man, Onias, juxtaposed to the central tradition regarding the siege of the temple during this war, although this too was clearly an early Jewish tradition. In the rabbinic sources, the story of the siege and the sacrificial animals underwent multiple reworkings, and it is the Babylonian Talmud that reflects the more original version and message of the story.

The Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient inscriptions, and Jewish books preserved within various Christian communities demonstrate that Jewish identity took a variety of forms in the period following that described in the Hebrew Bible. However, the teachings of only one of these groups – the rabbis – became normative. This was also the period during which prayer and synagogues emerged as a widespread practice. It was also at this time that the foundation for the eventual break with Christianity, which began as a form of Judaism, was laid. Remarkably, several of the features from this Second Temple period

‘The archaeological site and caves’ examines the archaeological evidence found at the Khirbet Qumran site. Palestinian archaeology was previously dominated by the biblical agenda, but Khirbet Qumran is not mentioned in the Bible, and was only excavated because of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The occupation of the site is generally divided into three phases: the Israelite phase, the communal phase (occupation by the Essenes), and the Second Revolt phase. A cemetery also exists at the site. This was the burial ground of the Qumran people (mixed with some later Bedouin burials), and arguments have raged

Chapter 4 concentrates on terminology, examining the changes in the meanings of both ethnē and goyim. After discussing the Dead Sea Scrolls and the First and Second Maccabees, it moves to Philo and Josephus, discussing the different terms they use for foreigners, collective and individual, and their discursive meanings. For both authors, Israel is conceived as an exception that does not define the rule. Instead, it was understood on the terms of Israel’s constitution, which Philo interpreted theologically, and Josephus read politically and historically. The chapter ends with an analysis of the

Strictly speaking, the Second Temple period extends from the construction of the temple at the end of the sixth century bce to its destruction by the Romans in 70 ce. Some scholars would now argue that the entire biblical corpus belongs in this period. Even if one accepts the more traditional dating of biblical sources, the final edition of the Torah must be placed after the Exile. This article deals with this literature. The literature may be divided into three categories, based on provenance more than on literary genre, although each category has its own characteristics. These are the Apocry
