Resumen
This essay examines varying theories on the nature and essences of classical texts from the Western literary canon. These ideas range from the notion that the classic is a single work, to viewing these great works as accommodating multiple meanings over time, to the belief that their distinguishing feature is their ability to relate identifiable and universal themes that transcend readers' particular circumstances. In exploring these three perspectives, it becomes clear that The Bible fulfills the requirements for classical designation and should therefore be regarded as a seminal part of the West's literary heritage. Finally, this paper discusses the educational implications for teaching Scripture as classical text in the high school classroom.

Huruvida det ska finnas en västerländsk kanon i skolan eller ej är ett omdiskuterat ämne. Från att ha varit en självklarhet i svenskundervisning och sedd som någonting berikande har den kommit att bli uppfattad som elitisk och uteslutande i vissa hänseenden. I den här uppsatsen diskuteras detta vidare genom att undersöka frågor som vad som egentligen är västerländsk kanon och vilken litteratur som ingår i den, varför man ska läsa denna litteratur, samt ta reda på verksamma lärares och elevers åsikter om kanons legitimitet i skolan. Undersökningen är baserad på kvalitativa intervjuer med två verksamma svensklärare på gymnasiet, samt fyra elever varav hälften läser studieförberedande gymnasieprogram, och den andra hälften yrkesförberedande dito. Undersökningen visade att lärarna hade både skilda åsikter men även kunskaper om kanons legitimitet i skolan; den ena var emot den, men använde sig av litteratur ur den, medan den andra förespråkade den. Elevernas kännedom om kanon var mindre, likväl stämde deras kunskaper om varför den är berättigad i skolan väl överens med rådande forskning som menar att den är allmänbildande, för vidare kulturarvet, och mer språkutvecklande än exempelvis populärlitteratur. Med detta inte sagt att man bör utesluta det ena eller det andra, utan de kan berika varandra.
Our investigation is based on qualitative interviews with two working upper secondary teachers and four second year students; two of these students attend university preparing programs and the other two attend work preparing programs. The results of the investigation show that the teachers have different opinions about the importance of the literature in the Western canon: one was against it and the other participant acknowledged it and even praised it. Despite the differences in opinion they both use it in their teaching because “it is classical literature that we all can learn something from”. It tells tales about the past - society, economy and politics. The students who were interviewed knew considerably less about the Western canon, although they knew such a thing existed they were insecure about what kind of literature it contains. When being shown the list of Western literary canon they recognized quite a few authors and books, because they had, at some point, read them or about them in their literary studies. All of the students recognize the canons importance and understand why it exists. It educates the general public about a way of life that has had a great impact, and still has, on our society and all aspects of it. It gives us the opportunity, through reading these canonized books, to see with our own eyes, past life and understand why some things have happened and developed the way they did.

Den västerländska kanon har varit ett omdiskuterat begrepp ända sedan dess intåg i litteraturvetenskapliga kretsar - en debatt som pågår ännu idag. Debatten har främst kommit att handla om kanons legitimitet i förhållande till dess representation, då den sedan uppkomsten främst har representerats av litteratur skriven av västerländska män. År 2004 uppmärksammades debatten i Norden, vilket resulterade i att Danmark fick en etablerad kulturkanon, som syftar till att representera det danska kulturarvet. Detta inspirerade till en liknande debatt i Sverige, där folkpartisten Cecilia Wikström lade fram ett förslag på en liknande svensk kulturkanon för att därmed stärka det svenska kulturarvet. Detta förslag möttes av kritik från olika håll, vilket vi undersöker i denna uppsats för att ge en bild av kanons många aspekter. Uppsatsen är uppdelad i två delar: en makroanalys och en mikroanalys. Makroanalysen undersöker forskning kring kanonteorier, kanondefinitioner, kanoniska egenskaper och kanonrepresentation, för att kunna erhålla en tolkning och vidare en förståelse för vad som utgör kanon. Mikroanalysen är en undersökning som utmärker och legitimerar en romans plats i kanon, utifrån resultaten i studiens första del. Litteraturobjektet är Gustave Flauberts Madame Bovary från 1857, då den förekommer på flera kanonlistor, och är både hyllad och kritiserad. Litteraturen vi granskar består av etablerad litteratur som är representerad i kanon i egenskap av en manlig västerländsk författare, för att undersöka i vilken mån de kanoniska egenskaperna går att utröna i verket, och med detta motivera dess plats i kanon. Makroanalysen visar att kanon fortfarande till största del är representerad av västerländska män. Detta, visar forskningen, beror på traditionella urvalsprocesser som inte alltid följer samhällets utveckling mot jämlikhet och mångfald. Likväl har det uppstått en del alternativa listor och forskning som bidrar till att de försummade författarskapen representeras i kanon. Mikroanalysen visar korrelationen med resultaten i makroanalysen. Madame Bovary besitter de kanoniska egenskaper som eftersträvas i kanon genom stil och särart, tradition, värderingar, kulturarv samt står emot tidens tand. The Western canon has been a debatable topic ever since its entry into the field of literature - a debate that is still on-going. The focus of this particular debate has primarily been about the canons legitimacy in relation to its representation, since it is mostly represented by literature written by Western males. In 2004, the debate was brought to attention in Scandinavia, which resulted in an established culture canon in Denmark, which intended to represent the Danish cultural heritage. This inspired a similar debate in Sweden, where the politician Cecilia Wikström suggested a similar Swedish cultural canon, in order to strengthen the Swedish cultural heritage. This suggestion was met by critique from different directions, which our study is partly based on. This thesis study is divided into two parts: a macroanalysis, and a microanalysis. The macroanalysis analyses research about canon theories, canon definitions, canonical qualities, and canon representation, in order to establish an interpretation and understanding of the constituents of the canon. The microanalysis is a study that distinguishes and legitimizes a novel’s place in the canon, based on the results from the macroanalysis. The literary object of this study is Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary from 1857, since it is recurrent in many lists of canonical works, and has been both praised and criticised throughout the years. The literature that is studied is established literature represented in the canon as a work of a Western male writer, in order to study how the canonical qualities are represented in the novel, and thus legitimise its place in the canon. The results from the macroanalysis show that the Western canon is still mostly represented by Western males. Research indicates that this is due to traditional sampling processes, which do not always follow the development in society towards equality and cultural diversity. However, some alternative canonical lists have emerged, as well as research that has contributed to further representation of previously neglected authorships to the canon. The microanalysis shows the correlation with the results from the macroanalysis. The canonical qualities of style and peculiar nature, tradition, values, cultural heritage and standing the test of time, are all represented in Madame Bovary. The results of this study indicate that it is not always about the canonical qualities per se; it seems to be more about what a literary work represents in relation to the literary field, or the canonical discourse, that determines what is considered as being canonical or not.

The aim of this study is to examine how four different upper secondary school teachers of Swedish relate to the global perspective and today’s multiculturalism when they do their teaching, and to examine how teachers reason and reflect concerning the use in Swedish teaching of literature written from a non-western perspective. To achieve the aim I have used a qualitative method, interviewing four Swedish teachers from two upper secondary schools. The study shows that the teachers have different attitudes to the global perspective and different perceptions of the use of non-western literature in school. They can see the value of including non-western literature in their teaching, but they rarely do so, due to factors such as lack of time, lack of knowledge, the design of the textbooks, or the use of a school canon.

The canon of Western art history provides a selection of artists that have supposedly made an 'original' contribution to stylistic innovation within the visual arts. Although a process of selection cannot be avoided, this procedure has resulted in a Eurocentric and patriarchal art canon. For example, the Western art canon consists of certain white male artists who are given exclusive authority and are often referred to as the 'fathers of art'. As the status of a 'father of art' pertains to the highest level of achievement within artistic creativity, I argue that this excellence in creativity is based on a gender specific criteria. This issue refers to the patrilineage within Western art history and how this father-son model, in a general sense, excludes women artists from the canon. Further, the very few women included in the art canon are not given the equivalent status as a 'father of art'. I address this patriarchal bias through focussing on the father/daughter relationship as a way of challenging the patrilineage within Western art history’s patrilineage. Through this process of intervention, I position the daughter an assertive figure who directly confronts the fathers of Western art. Within this confrontation, I emphasise that the daughter has an assertive identity that is also beyond the father. On this premise my paper is based on the argument that the application of a father/daughter model, within a metaphorical and mythological sense, is useful in subverting the father figures within Western art history. That is, I construct myself as the metaphorical and mythological daughter of the Dada artist, Marcel Duchamp and the Fluxus artist, Joseph Beuys. As an assertive daughter, I insert myself into the patriarchal framework surrounding these two canonical figures in order to decentre and subvert their authority and phallocentric art practice. It is important to note that both Duchamp and Beuys are addressed as case studies (not as individual arguments) that illustrate the patriarchal constructs of the art canon. Within this premise, I draw upon the female artists Sherrie Levine and Jana Sterbak who directly subvert Western father figures as examples of assertive daughter identities. Within this exploration of the assertive daughter identity, I discuss feminist psychoanalysis (particularly the 'object relations' theorist Nancy Chodorow and the French feminist, Luce Irigaray) in order to offer metaphorical representations of the assertive daughter. These metaphors also assist in subverting the gender (male) specific criteria for creativity under the 'law of the father'.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka förekomsten av icke-västerländska författarskap i läroböcker för svenska på gymnasiet. Undersökningens grund är en pedagogisk textanalys, vilket är en form av innehållsanalys. Fyra läroböcker avsedda för svenskämnet på gymnasiet har analyserats genom en pedagogisk textanalys med såväl kvantitativa som kvalitativa inslag. Uppsatsens teoretiska utgångspunkt har främst varit Edward Saids postkoloniala teori och Mekkonen Tesfahuneys tankar om ett eurocentriskt utbildningssystem. Vikten av ett etnografiskt förhållningssätt i skolan är också en del av teorin. Resultatet visar att icke-västerländska författarskap ges skiftande utrymme i de olika läroböckerna. I den lärobok med störst andel icke-västerländska författare utgör dessa 22 procent av den totala andelen författarskap, medan motsvarande andel för läroboken med minst representation är 2,5 procent. De didaktiska utgångspunkterna för hur de icke-västerländska författarskapen enligt läroböckerna ska behandlas i undervisningen skiljer sig också åt. Eftersom det finns stora skillnader både vad gäller innehåll och didaktiska utgångspunkter i olika läroböcker riskerar undervisningen i skolan att inte bli likvärdig, beroende på i hur hög utsträckning lärarna använder sig av läroböckerna i undervisningen.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the prevalence of non-Western authorships in textbooks for Swedish at upper secondary school. The study is an educational text analysis, which is a form of content analysis. Four textbooks intended for the Swedish subject in upper secondary school have been analyzed by an educational text analysis of both quantitative and qualitative elements. Thesis theoretical base has been primarily Edward Said´s postcolonial theory and Mekkonen Tesfahuneys thoughts about a Eurocentric education system. The importance of an ethnographic approach in schools is also part of the theory. The result shows that non-Western authorships are given diverse space in the different textbooks. In the textbook with the highest proportion of non-Western writers, these are 22 percent of the total proportion authorship, while the corresponding proportion of the textbook with the least representation is 2,5 percent. The didactic starting points for how non-Western writers should be treated in teaching according to the textbooks also differ. Because of the big differences in terms of both content and didactic starting points in the various textbooks, the education in schools risk to not be equal, depending on the extent to which teachers using the textbooks in teaching.

A government-to-government consultation between the Department of Energy, Nevada Operations Office (DOE/NV) and the Consolidated Group of Tribes and Organizations (CGTO) focused on the interpretation and determination of eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Water Bottle Canyon. The consultation entailed a systematic ethnographic study of the cultural resources found in the Water Bottle Canyon area. The main goal of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of this unique area for contemporary Indian people and its role in Numic cultural landscapes. During the field visits Native American consultants were interviewed with standardized survey instruments and they provided ethnographers with observations, comments, and recommendations regarding the various features found at Water Bottle Canyon. The project involved 10 tribes and one organization. They represent the Indian people who have aboriginal and historic ties to the lands currently under use by the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The study was originally funded as rapid cultural assessment for an environmental assessment for the proposed construction of a rocket launch facility by the Kistler Aerospace Corporation. This present report builds upon first study and the studies that have followed. The four studies expanded upon previous work conducted on the NTS and will contribute to the DOE/NV’s further understanding of and continued efforts to manage and protect American Indian cultural resources.

This research examines the ways in which local residents living in close proximity to the event perceived the Berg River Canoe Marathon as a major event in the Western Cape. By identif'ying these different patterns ofperceptions within the community, it is possible to gain a better understanding of both the tangible and intangible impacts of events and how they differently affect the quality of life of local residents as individuals and the community as a whole. The research method was based on a convenient sampling approach. A questionnaire survey of two hundred residents was conducted and five different dimensions of perceiving the impacts of events were examined ranging from extremely negative to very positive. The impacts analysed included social, economic and environmental impacts. The residents in all the five locations perceived community pride and entertainment to be very positive and were in favour ofthe continuation of the event. 1n profiling the residents who held each of the representations identified, it was found that the most negative group was those residents who had little or no involvement in tourism and are not interested in canoeing as a sport. Thus, it is necessary for event organisers and event managers to get the members of community involved in the planning and management of the event to spread the benefits to a larger portion of the community.

La présente thèse entend répondre à l’affirmation d’un canoniste russe, Vladimir Benechevitch, selon laquelle, du point de vue de l’histoire du droit ecclésiastique, il ne serait pas exagéré de dater la séparation des Églises du IXe siècle, époque qui a vu apparaître les Fausses Décrétales et le Nomocanon en XIV Titres dans la version du patriarche Photius. C’est dans cette optique que les deux recueils sont comparés, au prisme de l’office de l’évêque. Dans chacun des chapitres, une comparaison serrée des textes est effectuée selon la vision propre de chacune des sources relativement à l’office épiscopale. Cette comparaison a permis de mettre en lumière la grande similitude de deux recueils en la matière, ce qui va à l’encontre de l’idée d’une séparation aussi précoce des Eglises latine et orientale. La recherche a aussi conduit à proposer des pistes de réflexions nouvelles quant aux liens ayant pu exister entre le recueil grec, et plus largement le patrimoine canonique des chrétiens d’Orient, et des collections canoniques occidentales

Therefore, the bishop’s office presented by these collections is compared. Every chapter offers the comparison of the texts according to the vision of bishop’s office by every source. This comparison shows the unity of the collections and denies the schism. This is a report of findings from an American Indian Rapid Cultural Assessment that was conducted in 1997. The focus of the study is a location on the Nevada Test Site (NTS) where the Kistler Aerospace Corporation proposes to build a launch site for a communications satellite. As such, this is a rapid cultural assessment of Water Bottle Canyon on which construction is expected in the near future. The purpose of this study is to summarize American Indian cultural resources, as these exist on and near to site 26NY10133 and to consider potential mitigation strategies. This report is a summary of the cultural assessments made by members of the American Indian Writers Subgroup (AIWS) which is representing in this study the cultural resource interests of the 17 tribes and 3 Indian organizations that constitute the CGTO.

Previous work in the Gulf of Lions, France has suggested that significant amounts of sediment may be escaping through the western part of this tectonically passive margin, despite it being far-removed from the primary sediment source (the Rhone river, ~160 km to the NE). It is hypothesized that the westernmost Cap de Creus canyon is intercepting the regional sediment-transport pathway and directing it offshore, allowing significant sediment export through this area. The overall goal of this project is to determine pathways and causes of sediment movement into Cap de Creus canyon to determine its role in off-shelf sediment export within the Gulf of Lions. Box cores were collected within the canyon and on the adjacent shelf on five cruises (2003-2005). Geochronology (210Pb-derived accumulation rates), grain-size distributions, and sedimentary structures (x-radiography) were analyzed to assess sedimentation patterns. Results indicate two mid-depth shelf depocenters (30-90 m water depth) separated by a zone of bypassing created by current acceleration around a headland. Within the canyon, the northern flank and mid-depth thalweg are modern depocenters of fine-grained sediments. The canyon head and southern flank are considered non-depositional for fine grains, although the head may be accumulating sands. Material enters the canyon from the northern rim (via advection of shelf benthic nepheloid layers), the southern rim (via dense-water cascading off the shelf), and through the canyon head (primarily coarse-grains). Budget calculations indicate that 9-23% of the sediment input to the Gulf is sequestered on the shelf and 1-4% is accumulating in upper Cap de Creus canyon. An ephemeral mud layer within the canyon axis indicates rapid deposition and frequent flushing, suggesting that sediment is moving through the upper canyon. This is also supported by high suspended-sediment concentrations associated with off-shelf dense-water flows. This study suggests that Cap de Creus canyon is an important conduit of sediment past the shelf break and the western margin is a primary location of sediment export from the Gulf of Lions.

The tuff of Elevenmile Canyon (TEC) is a 25.1 Ma trachydacite to rhyolite intracaldera tuff produced by the largest of 6 Oligocene overlapping calderas that, along with related plutons, constitute the Stillwater Caldera Complex, one of the largest eruptions of the Western Nevada Volcanic Field during the mid-Tertiary ignimbrite flare-up. Typically crystal-rich with a mineral assemblage of plagioclase > quartz  sanidine > biotite ± hornblende and clinopyroxene, there are two discernable pumice types throughout the tuff: a lighter crystal-rich pumice and a darker, commonly aphyric pumice type. Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic compositions of pumice fragments and whole rock samples indicate an enriched mantle component (87Sr/86Srin = 0.70495 – 0.70535, Nd[t=25.1Ma] = -1.13 to -0.39) similar to that of coeval Cenozoic mafic lavas. Pb isotopes (206Pb/204Pbin = 19.042 – 19.168, 207Pb/204Pbin = 15.557 – 15.664) fall along a tight trend between the Northern Hemisphere Reference Line (Hart 1984) and an endmember similar to local granitic units. Major and trace element modelling support a source for the TEC derived from the mixing of anatectic melts of crustal rocks with intruded mantle-derived magmas similar to a local basaltic-andesite.

Cenozoic sedimentary successions have a restricted distribution and are largely incomplete due to erosion and non-deposition on the western margin of southern Africa. For this reason, much controversy and uncertainty remains on the geological evolution of the western margin. The wide western margin is largely devoid of bathymetric features, except for the deeply incised Cape Canyon that crosscuts the continental slope and shelf ~150 km to the northwest of Cape Town. The Head of the Cape Canyon forms a well-developeed trough landwards of the Western Ridge, which separates the middle and outer shelf. More than 50 cores, up to 6 m in length, at water depths between 190 and 450 m were recovered from the Head of the Cape Canyon region. Siliclastic, authigenic and biogenic sediments, varying in age from Cretaceous to Holocene provide the basis of a detailed sedimentary analysis. The diversity of lithostratigraphic units recovered from the condensed sedimentary record provides a unique opportunity to define in detail, for the first time, a late Cenozoic stratigraphic record for the western outer continental shelf.

Cette thèse a pour objet de mettre en évidence l’influence de la presse anglophone en Chine sur l’émergence de la presse chinoise moderne au 19e siècle. La presse anglophone prit pied aux pourtours d’une Chine dont le seul organe d’information se limitait à la Gazette impériale depuis deux millénaires. Les journaux anglophones virent le jour pour apporter aux Britanniques et aux Chinois qui partageaient la même sphère les informations nécessaires à leur activité commerciale. La presse anglophone s’est développée seule pendant une trentaine d’années puis elle accompagna la naissance de la presse chinoise moderne et lui servit de modèle et de soutien. Les journaux commerciaux anglophones hébergèrent la presse chinoise au sein de leurs propres pages avant la parution de titres exclusivement chinois dans les années 1870. La presse anglophone et la jeune presse chinoise moderne s’ouvrirent aux problématiques politiques et furent animées par de nouvelles personnalités, parmi lesquelles des étudiants chinois occidentalisés, des hommes d’affaires chinois fortunés et des lettrés ayant fait un pas vers la modernité. L’indépendance éditoriale de la presse chinoise vis-à-vis de la presse anglophone fut alors acquise, mais l’influence et la coopération ne cessèrent pas pour autant. Les échanges matériels et professionnels se muèrent en connivences et protections, la presse anglophone aidant les titres chinois à surmonter la censure et la répression dont ils étaient les victimes. La présence de la presse anglophone sur les pourtours de la Chine a permis au savoir-faire technique et à l’expérience humaine d’être réunis au moment historique où la Chine, confrontée au défi de la modernité, a vu surgir à la fin du 19e siècle des débats sur sa transformation, alors qu’aucun vecteur médiatique n’était à l’époque disponible. L’émergence d’une presse chinoise moderne étant devenue inéluctable, elle s’est accomplie en symbiose avec la presse anglophone qui s’était enracinée depuis quelques décennies sur les pourtours de la Chine
This dissertation examines the influence of the English-language press in China [in Hong Kong and the International concession of Shanghai] on the birth of a modern Chinese press from 1827 to 1911. The English-language press developed on the edge of a country where the only channel of information for 2000 years had been the Imperial gazette. The English language newspapers allowed British and Chinese residents to gather information which was both useful in their daily lives and to run their businesses. The English language papers first developed single-handedly for about thirty years before encouraging the birth of Chinese ones and serving as a support and model. The English-language press first incorporated Chinese pages before publishing entirely Chinese newspapers in the 1870s. Both the English-language press and the new Chinese press opened up to recent political issues and new personalities, such as westernized Chinese students, wealthy businessmen and scholar-gentry who had come to accept modernity for China. The Chinese-language press soon achieved editorial independence but cooperation between the two was maintained. Material and professional exchanges transformed themselves into mutual help and understanding, the British helping at times to overcome the bouts of censorship and repression from which the Chinese papers regularly suffered. The presence of English-language press enabled both technical and personnel transfers to take place at a time in history when China was confronted with the threat of modernity and had begun to experience debates about its future but had no local media to report on them. A modern Chinese press had thus become an absolute necessity for citizens who took pride in their past and were concerned with the weakened state of their country. It was achieved with the help of the English-language press which had taken roots a few decades earlier on the outskirts of China

As part of the wider European GTS Next project, I propose new constraints on the ages of the Late Cretaceous, derived from a multitude of geochronological techniques, and successful stratigraphic interpretations from Canada and Japan. In the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, we propose a new constraint on the age of the K/Pg boundary in the Red Deer River section (Alberta, Canada). We were able to cyclostratigraphically tune sediments in a non-marine, fluvial environment utilising high-resolution proxy records suggesting a 11-12 precession related cyclicity. Assuming the 40Ar/39Ar method is inter-calibrated with the cyclostratigraphy, the apparent age for C29r suggests that the K/Pg boundary falls between eccentricity maxima and minima, yielding an age of the C29r between 65.89 ± 0.08 and 66.30 ± 0.08 Ma. Assuming that the bundle containing the coal horizon represents a precession cycle, the K/Pg boundary is within the analytical uncertainty of the youngest zircon population achieving a revised age for the K/Pg boundary as 65.75 ± 0.06 Ma. The Campanian - Maastrichtian boundary is preserved in the sedimentary succession of the Horseshoe Canyon Formation and has been placed ~8 m below Coal nr. 10. Cyclostratigraphic studies show that the formation of these depositional sequences (alternations) of all scales are influenced directly by sea-level changes due to precession but more dominated by eccentricity cycles proved in the cyclostratigraphic framework and is mainly controlled by sand horizons, which have been related by autocyclicity in a dynamic sedimentary setting. Our work shows that the Campanian - Maastrichtian boundary in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin coincides with ~2.5 eccentricity cycles above the youngest zircon age population at the bottom of the section and ~4.9 Myr before the Cretaceous - Palaeogene boundary (K/Pg), and thus corresponds to an absolute age of 70.65 ± 0.09 Ma producing an ~1.4 Myr younger age than recent published ages. Finally, using advances with terrestrial carbon isotope and planktonic foraminifera records within central Hokkaido, Northwest Pacific, sections from the Cretaceous Yezo group were correlated to that of European and North American counterparts. Datable ash layers throughout the Kotanbetsu and Shumarinai section were analysed using both 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb methods. We successfully dated two ash tuff layers falling either side of the Turonian - Coniacian boundary, yielding an age range for the boundary between 89.31 ± 0.11 Ma and 89.57 ± 0.11 Ma or a boundary age of 89.44 ± 0.24 Ma. Combining these U-Pb ages with recent published ages we are able to reduce the age limit once more and propose an age for the Turonian - Coniacian boundary as 89.62 ± 0.04 Ma.

This report confronts the issue of the globalisation of European culture and its significance for the Western canon in South African education. It considers the difficulty of defending the canon as cultural resource for a local minority while avoiding the imposition of the globally dominant Anglophone culture on all South Africans. It is argue-d that whatever in the canon can be freely accepted as advancing the interests of all South Africans should qualify for inclusion in a common curriculum, but that other canonical works should be regarded as minority culture in the same way as aspects of traditional African culture. An attempt is made to establish a perspective from which Africanism and the defence of the canon can be seen as congruent and compatible aims, equally deserving of accommodation within a multicultural curriculum.

High school general music classes often primarily consist of lectures about the Western art canon, despite repeated calls for a popular music focus (Deal, 1984; Miceli, 1998; Snell, 2007; Thompson, 1979; Woody, 2007). It is argued that the latter approach can alleviate student apathy toward class content and boredom, provide more meaningful learning experiences for the students, and create a more positive experience for the teacher. The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of students and teachers in both a traditional general music class and a popular music-focused general music class. In this qualitative comparative study, I studied two high school general music classes in Tennessee and investigated the experiences of the students and teachers with respect to subject matter, teaching techniques, and meaningful learning. My data sources were interviews with teachers and students, classroom observations, and classroom archival documents. I analyzed the data using interpretive coding guided by a constant comparative approach. Cross-case emergent themes involving meaningful learning included students' preference for music studied at the end of the semester and a high level of student-teacher interaction and engagement when studying popular styles of music. Regarding curricula and teaching methods, cross-case themes showed similar attitudes and frustrations for teachers and students in both classes. Within-case themes in the Music for Listeners class included an expressed student desire to learn popular music, student lack of understanding of the Western art canon, and student ability to connect class topics to outside of school activities. Within-case themes in the Development of Rock 'n' Roll class illustrated the importance of delivery style and technology in the general music classroom. I concluded that a combination of curriculum and teaching style produced differing experiences for the students and teachers. Based on the results of this study, suggestions for education profession include employing a genre of music that is meaningful to the students in their daily lives; engaging students in conversations about the music they enjoy; avoiding "busy work" and ensuring that assignments are relevant; and providing ample music listening opportunities.

This thesis argues that in order to understand the non-representation of women and BIPOC in the Western musical canon, the analysis of their cultural musical production and reception must start in early modern period, a time heavily influenced by the establishment of capitalism. Intertwining political feminist studies, critical race theory and musicology critique, I argue that the witch hunts and the inhumane colonial practices in Africa and the America (fundamental to establish capitalism as a global system), had an important role in shaping Western musical culture as homogeneous and monolithic. Thus, I first trace the change in female customs in the early modern period and show how poetry and then music reflected the newly imposed norm of chastity presenting as case study “I’ mi son giovinetta.” Here I discuss the importance of il concerto delle dame in Italy, their vital role in conserving women’s musical excellence as well as the restriction imposed on their lives based solely on their gender. Race and gender biases are protagonist of the following chapter, where I present a case study on Die Zauberflöte as mirror of the societal changes happening at the same time in Europe. Intersecting race, gender and class I demonstrate the multiple ways in which this opera reiterates the victory of capitalistic patriarchy over the previous way of organizing life. In the last chapter, I discuss the various conflicting ideas that scholars brought forth regarding the Western canon formation. I argue that the gendered and racist pseudo-scientific ideologies that relegated women and BIPOC to their bodies (in connection to capitalist’s exploitation of “free labor”), were reaffirmed by scholars in the following centuries. These ideologies fed into the elevation of “absolute music” as the manifestation of the (white, male) intellectual genius, and contributed to forging musical institution that today continue to uphold sexists and racist values.

Southern Taiwan and its offshore area is situated in a convergent plate boundary and have been suggested to be an accretionary wedge, which is characterized by numerous folds and thrusts. The unique geological setting makes Hengchun Peninsula, which is the southernmost tip of Taiwan island, a great place to study the neotectonics of Taiwan. The eastern part of the Hengchun Peninsula is the southern continuation of the Central Range; the western part of the Hengchun Peninsula lies the West Hengchun Tableland that was formed by collision uplifting. It seems that the morphology of the western Hengchun Peninsula and its offshore area are related to a large anticline. A curved depression valley, called "Hongtsai Canyon", was found on the west side of the tableland. This study suggests that this arc-shaped small submarine channel could be associated with collapsing blocks of western part of West Hengchun tableland formed by a normal faults. In this study, we first reprocess more than 10 seismic reflection profile data for signal enhancement offshore Southern Taiwan. We then analyze the seismic data for understanding the structural styles of the West Hengchun tableland offshore area. In the northern Hongtsai Canyon, a series of normal faults that are parallel arc-shaped depression have been recognized, and the channel widens westward. In the central and southern Hongtsai Canyon, shallow water depth coupled with strong deformed strata and overlying coral reefs make it difficult to clarify how the the sedimentary and structural processes affect the development of the Hongtsai Canyon from seismic profiles. Nevertheless, seafloor features such as anticlines and eroded channels imply that this depressed channel is formed by block sliding. By comparing the bathymetric and seismic data, we suggest that this arc-shaped depression is a block sliding along a normal fault with a strike-slip component, and then this arc-shaped depression has been eroded and deposited by turbidity currents. As southern Taiwan is situated in the active collision stage, extensional normal faults are not expected to appear in this area. This study suggests that the extensional strike-slip faults may related to anticline top extention and the tectonic escape in southwestern Taiwan, which can lead to the surface rifting and sliding structures by transtension.

A severe wildfire burned 454 hectares of a second-growth Douglas-fir forest in 1977 on a north-facing slope in Pattee Canyon, near Missoula, Montana. The slope was aerially seeded with a grass mixture, from which Dactylis glomerata established best. Community structure, conifer regeneration, and the impact of the seeded grass on the plant community were evaluated with two data sets. One set tracked postfire vegetation development from 1979 to 1987 on permanent transects established on upland sites in areas of varying fire severity. The second data set was collected in 1989 on upland sites nearest to the bum edge where conifer regeneration was expected to be greatest. Most stands converged to a similar ordination space by 1987, showing that several key species which established in the initial postfire year determined community structure. These species were largely on-site survivors (including Calamagrostis rubescens, Physocarpus malvaceus, and Spiraea betulifolia) and the seeded grass, D. glomerata. The spread of this species by 1987 to stands that apparently escaped seeding in 1977 suggested that this species may persist at this site. Patterns of species abundance and distribution in 1989 were primarily controlled by factors summarized by a topographic-moisture index and by pre-burn disturbance history. Three general site types were described by an ordination. Areas that appeared as open woodlands in 1937 occurred on ridges and had more xerophytic vegetation in 1989, including native grasses. Conifer regeneration in this region was limited primarily to Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas-fir). Areas that appeared as an even, young forest in 1937 were on open slopes and were associated with Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine), Larix occidentalis (western larch), Vaccinum globulare, and Amelanchier alnifolia. Areas that appeared as an older, uneven-aged forest in 1937 were on open slopes near the upper burn edge and were characterized by Douglas-fir and Spiraea betulifolia in 1989. D. glomerata was more successful on the drier ridges and was negatively associated with Calamagrostis rubescens. Competition with C. rubescens, rather than differences in environmental tolerances, most likely restricted D. glomerata to the more xeric sites. An adverse effect of D. glomerata on conifer regeneration was most likely for western larch on xeric sites. Site factors and historical factors were most important in determining patterns of conifer regeneration. Regeneration was moderate on mesic slopes and sparse on xeric ridges. The extreme density of lodgepole pine regeneration (13,000 stems/hectare) in one mesic area reflected the importance of serotiny for post-fire regeneration of this species. Douglas-fir regeneration ranged from 370 stems/ha in a mesic area where no mature survivors were noted to 4045 stems/ha on a mesic slope near survivors. On mesic slopes near survivors, western larch regeneration was 857 stems/ha and was minimal elsewhere. A regression model confirmed the importance of site factors, site history, and availability of seed source for Douglas-fir and lodgepole pine. The model for western larch was only able to explain 14% of regeneration pattern, suggesting that microsite variation as well as other variables would be needed to predict regeneration for this species.

This doctoral thesis is a social history of the lands and people Te Whāiti-nui-a-Toi, also known as The Great Canyon of Toi, a small isolated valley located on the western borders of the Urewera mountains of New Zealand. In the first chapter, the prophecies of the Great Canyon of Toi are revealed which is followed by a discussion of the theoretical model of the thesis in chapter two. In chapter three, an interesting historiography of Te Whāiti-nui-a-Toi and the scholar, Elsdon Best, is presented. These three preliminary chapters set the scene for the three main parts of the thesis. The first two parts of the thesis retrace the evolution of the Māori and Pākeha social histories of Te Whāiti, from their earliest origins, to the present day. In Part I of the thesis, chapters four to six, the mana Māori model is presented, which proposes the view that there is a peculiarly Māori way of knowing the social history of Te Whāiti-nui-a-Toi. Part I is divided into three domains of the spiritual, human and earthly authorities. In Part II, chapters seven to nine, the mana Pākeha model is presented, which argues that there is a peculiarly Pākeha way of knowing that same social history. Part II is divided into the three domains of initial alienation, legal imperialism, and neo-colonialism. Part III, chapter ten, analyses the power-struggle between the models of mana Māori and mana Pākeha and explores the dynamics of the relationship between Māori and Pākeha ways of knowing the social history of Te Whāiti-nui-a-Toi. The title of this thesis, 'The Prophecies of the Great Canyon of Toi', is a direct reference to a song composed by Te Kooti at Te Whāiti-nui-a-Toi in 1884. The lyrics of this song form a theoretical framework for this thesis and the song provides a new and fresh way of seeing the history of New Zealand. Finally, the events foretold in the song have all been fulfilled and are confirmed by historical events that are explained throughout the body of the thesis.
