The International Conference on Muslim Minority/Majority Relations held in New York, Rabi' al Awwal 23-25, 1410/0ctober 24 to 26, 1989 brought to the fore some of the little known but significantly major problems faced by the Muslim minority communities in many parts of the world. The magnitude of the problem can be seen from the fact that the Muslim minorities form one-third of the world Muslim population, over 300 million out of an estimated one billion Muslims. The three day conference was divided into different areas of concern. Over 50 papers were presented. Among the topics discussed wer

In the Turkish case, the Lausanne Treaty would be the defining document which set out a series of rights and freedoms for the non-Muslim minorities in the newly created nation. Abstract The chapter highlights how the social and cultural developments that spanned the 1970s had a disorienting effect in many regions of the Italian periphery, generating fears that local communities and cultures might be erased by globalisation. These concerns surfaced from the work of the International Conference on Minorities, organized in Trieste at the initiative of the President of the Province of Friuli, and also motivated the organization of schemes to protect the ‘Venetian language and culture’, which can be considered embryos of the Liga Veneta.

This chapter provides historical narratives of the experiences of Baha'is in Iran and Ahmadis in Pakistan and Indonesia. Emerging as messianic movements in the late nineteenth century, Baha'is and Ahmadis challenged established Islamic orthodoxies, particularly regarding the finality of prophecy. The chapter reveals how the Baha'is and Ahmadis have been persecuted primarily due to their theological differences, which have fueled sustained campaigns of stigmatization led by clerical authorities.
