Resumen

Across the body of piano repertoire that falls under the ‘etude’ genre, few were written with a specific body of piano pedagogical literature in mind. One such example is English composer York Bowen’s Twelve Studies (1916), one of the lesser known cycle of etudes in the piano repertoire. The titles Bowen appended to these studies as well as the technical aspects explored in them point to a connection with the pedagogical teachings of English piano pedagogue Tobias Matthay. This article will examine these studies through the lens of my personal experience preparing this repertoire for performance, and will disseminate insights gained through this preparation process regarding how specific concepts Matthay espoused in his teachings tie in with the explicit and implicit technical focus of these studies, and may be applied in practice. Following a brief introduction to Bowen, the studies, and Matthay, the main section of this article explores eleven of the twelve studies that contain direct and/or indirect references to Matthay’s concepts, before concluding with some general reflections. The purpose of this article is to offer some pedagogical insight on this repertoire, and possible guidance for performers and teachers who may wish to study these works, in spite of these insights coming from a personal perspective. Additionally, since these studies are presently not very well known in pianistic circles and literature is scarce, it is hoped that this article will help nurture further scholarly investigation into this repertoire.

Resumen

Analysis of seismic data from the Bowen and Surat Basins has yielded valuable information on the Permian and Triassic evolution of eastern Australia. When combined with seismic data from the Clarence-Moreton and Maryborough Basins, a new understanding of the post-Triassic evolution of the region can be gained, with widespread implications for other eastern Australian basins.The Early Permian-Middle Triassic Bowen-Sydney Basin is a foreland basin system extending 2000 km in preserved section from Nowra in the south to Collinsville in the north. Permian outcrops as far north as Cape York were probably part of the same system prior to deformation and erosion. The basins in the Bowen-Sydney system were linked by similar structural and stratigraphic patterns controlled by a magmatic arc to the east. The Esk Trough and associated remnant basins east of the Taroom Trough were part of the Middle Triassic foreland sequence. The structural style in the system is dominated by thrusting from the east. An Early Triassic deformation is shown to be the most important, rather than the previously believed Middle Triassic event.The overlying Jurassic-Cretaceous foreland system, which included the Surat, Maryborough and Clarence-Moreton Basins, were once joined behind another magmatic arc, east of the Triassic arc position. A major mid-Cretaceous deformation is documented which fragmented the Jurassic-Cretaceous foreland basin into a number of remnant basins prior to the opening of the Tasman Sea in the Cenomanian. The dominant structural style is again thrusting from the east. Given the severity of the deformation, its effects are expected to be present in continental margin basins around Australia.

Resumen

THE bare-rumped sheathtailed bat Saccolaimus saccolaimus is a poorly understood species that has a wide distribution covering parts of India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaya, Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Northern Australia (Bonaccorso 1998). First collected in Australia by De Vis near Cardwell, the current known distribution in Queensland (Qld) extends from Bowen to Cooktown with one isolated specimen collected near Coen on Cape York Peninsula (Hall 1995; Duncan et al. 1999). It has also been recorded in the Alligator River area in the Northern Territory (McKean et al. 1981). The conservation status of S. saccolaimus in Qld has recently been defined as ?Critically Endangered?, and the species has not been recorded anywhere in Australia for at least 18 years (Duncan et al. 1999; Menkhorst and Knight 2001). The likely reasons for the apparent decline are unclear, but may involve land-clearing and changed fire regimes in the coastal zone where it is thought to occur (Duncan et al. 1999). In contrast, Bonaccorso (1998) considers S. saccolaimus to be secure, albeit also poorly known in Papua New Guinea.

Anthropological fashion moves in a rhythm unlike the deliberate seasonal cycle of the couture houses that design the foulards the French find so troubling these days. But if gray or green is the new black this season in Paris and New York, public has been the new structure in anthropology for several long seasons now, and is only just beginning to live up to some of its considerable potential as a design element in cultural analysis, and also to show its age. The advantage of the public sphere as a concept is that—like its predecessor, structure, which can stand against chaos, anti-structure, agency, process, and so on—“public” resides within a rich semantic network in which it can signify a number of oppositions and complements: privacy, secrecy, domesticity, isolation, individualism, sectarianism, market, state. Despite its normative reputation as a concept associated with rational deliberation over the public good, in the hands of John Bowen, Lara Deeb, Charles Hirschkind, and Esra Özyürek, the public sphere turns out rather surprisingly to rely on cultivated affect and on sets of embodied dispositions that it shapes in the process of people's participation in it. Like Bourdieu's Kabyle house writ large, the public sphere is an opus operatum, a space channeling the interactions that create it, a set of relationships maintained by the interests and capacities it generates.

Resumen

Context.—Intestinal transplant has become a standard treatment option in the management of patients with irreversible intestinal failure. The histologic evaluation of small-bowel allograft biopsy specimens plays a central role in assessing the integrity of the graft. It is essential for the management of acute cellular and chronic rejection; detection of infections, particularly with respect to specific viruses (cytomegalovirus, adenovirus, Epstein-Barr virus); and immunosuppression-related lymphoproliferative disease. Objective.—To provide a comprehensive review of the literature and illustrate key histologic findings in small-bowel biopsy specimen evaluation of patients with small-bowel or multivisceral transplants. Data Sources.—Literature review using PubMed (US National Library of Medicine) and data obtained from national and international transplant registries in addition to case material at Columbia University, Presbyterian Hospital, and Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, New York. Conclusions.—Key to the success of small-bowel transplantation and multivisceral transplantation are the close monitoring and appropriate clinical management of patients in the posttransplant period, requiring coordinated input from all members of the transplant team with the integration of clinical, laboratory, and histopathologic parameters.

ABSTRACTThis note is concerned with the recognition of a previously unrecorded Roman temporary camp at Cow Close, near Bowes, in County Durham. Its possible significance as one of a chain of early Flavian camps linking York and Carlisle is also examined.

Resumen

Mbarrumbathama is a clan-named variety of Lamalama, a language of Cape York Peninsula, in the northeast of Australia. Together with Umbuygamu (Ogilvie 1994, Sommer 1998, Verstraete 2017) and Rimanggudinhma (Godman 1993), Lamalama forms the Lamalamic subgroup of Paman languages (Laycock 1969, Rigsby 1997, Verstraete 2018), themselves a subgroup of Pama-Nyungan (Hale 1964, 1966; see also Bowern & Atkinson 2012). The language is no longer spoken, but it is traditionally associated with about 20 clans (as reconstructed by Rigsby 1999, 2014) belonging to the southern shores of Princess Charlotte Bay, on the east coast of Cape York Peninsula (see Figure 1). The clans’ estates are mainly coastal, extending from the Normanby River mouth in the east to about 10 km west of the North Kennedy River mouth, but they also include some inland estates (see Rigsby 1992: 356).
