Résumé :
The British architect John Voelcker (1927–72) was a founding member of the small international, avantgarde group, Team 10 (1953–81), an outgrowth of the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). Voelcker was one of six authors of the document, ‘Doorn Manifesto’, a ‘Statement on Habitat’ that emphasised ‘vital human associations’. The Manifesto appeared in 1954, one year after Voelcker exhibited the ‘Zone’, his Architectural Association senior thesis and one of the first acknowledged Team 10 efforts, in Aix-en-Provence at the ninth CIAM meeting (1953). The Zone (on which he collaborated with Pat Crooke and Andrew Derbyshire between 1951 and 1952), as well as a north London dwelling that he designed for Humphrey Lyttelton (1957–58), and his contribution to agricultural vernacular building projects in Kent, are prototypical examples of Team 10's work. Voelcker's distance from the large-scale, analytical rationalism of CIAM and his interest in a socialminded vernacular aligned him with Team 10. Voelcker eventually published three articles on Team 10: the most notable one in Arena (1965), as well as another in Architects' Year Book (1957) and a third in Carré bleu (February 1960). These situate him plausibly as a historian of the group. In one of these essays Voelcker advocates an ‘open aesthetic’ that is not clearly defined, but that implicitly calls on architects to avoid imposing pre-ordained symbols and to include references to the past in their designs without, however, being rigidly imitative, as was the case, he argues, with the deleterious medieval features of Milan's Torre Velasca (1957) designed by BBPR.

Résumé :
Authors writing in a language other than their native tongue have become a common phenomenon in an era of increased international mobility. This article is devoted to three Russian-born émigré writers—Andreï Makine (b. 1957), Wladimir Kaminer (b. 1967), and Gary Shteyngart (b. 1972)—all of whom have achieved literary stardom with books written in French, German, and English, respectively. Although each of the three authors has a distinctive style and ideological position, in his own way each projects a “Russian” persona to the western public. Using the notion of cultural hybridity, Adrian Wanner explores the various strategies these authors have adopted in fashioning an identity for themselves that is tailored to meet the demands of the reading public in their respective host nations while exploiting the cachet of the Russian “brand name” in today's global literary economy.

Résumé :
Rabbi Ungar was born in Budapest to Bela and Frederika Ungar. The family lived in hiding with false identity papers from 1944 under the German occupation. After the war, a scholarship brought him to the UK where he studied at Jews’ College, then part of University College, and subsequently studied philosophy. Feeling uncomfortable within Orthodoxy, he met with Rabbi Harold Reinhart and Rabbi Leo Baeck and eventually became an assistant rabbi at West London Synagogue. In 1954 he obtained his doctorate in philosophy and was ordained as a rabbi through a programme that preceded the formal creation of Leo Baeck College in 1956. In 1955 he was appointed as rabbi at the progressive congregation in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Very soon his fiery anti-Apartheid sermons were condemned in the Afrikaans newspapers and received mixed reactions from the Jewish community. In December 1956 he was served with a deportation order and was forced to leave the country.

Résumé :
Walter Wilson Stothers was born in Glasgow on 8 November 1946. A third (youngest) son, he had the identical name to his father. From childhood, however, he had always been known by his middle name ‘Wilson’, so that his father, a Glasgow GP, would never be referred to as ‘Old Walter’. His mother, as Jean Young Kyle, had herself graduated in Mathematics in 1927, a rare achievement for a woman at that time. After attending the local primary school 1952–1956, Wilson completed his primary education in the preparatory classes in Allan Glen's School, then a distinguished Glasgow boys school with a scientific emphasis, progressing to the secondary school in 1958 and ending by becoming Dux in 1964. He also played in the school rugby first XV. From 1964–1968 he was a student in the Science Faculty of Glasgow University. His original intention was to take Honours in Chemistry and, indeed, he won the Chemistry prize in his first year. But he excelled in all subjects, winning the Faraday medal in the Intermediate Honours (second year) class in Natural Philosophy (Physics). After that he concentrated on Mathematics and became the top student, gaining a First Class Honours degree, as well as the Cunninghame Medal and a Jack Scholarship to Peterhouse College, Cambridge (1968). Before commencing postgraduate studies he married Andrea Watson in September 1968. At Cambridge from 1968–1971 he studied for a Ph.D. in number theory under the supervision of Peter Swinnerton-Dyer and graduated in 1972 with the thesis Some Discrete Triangle Groups. By then he was becoming aware of the strange realm inhabited by mathematicians that he seemed to be entering. So when his Cambridge room-mate Bob Odoni, at a research meeting they were attending as postgrads, asked, ‘Wilson, do you realise that we are the only normal people here’, Wilson felt compelled to respond, ‘What makes you think that we are normal?’

Mistreanu, Diana. « Andreï Makine et la cognition humaine. Pour une transbiographie ». Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris Est, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PESC0085.

This dissertation proposes a systematic analysis of Andreï Makine’s oeuvre. We read his prose through the prism of cognitive literary studies, a recent theoretical and methodological field which explores the interaction between literary interpretation on the one hand, and the human brain and mind on the other. We focus on the depiction of the affect, the imagination and the limits of cognition, while pinpointing, at the same time, the narrative techniques and the stylistic devices that contribute to create a work whose goal is not only to illustrate reality, but also to transfigure it. Thus, we analyse Makine’s novels from a dynamic perspective, asking what impact they could have on the reader, and proposing an innovative hypothesis concerning the relation between the author and his literary output. According to this hypothesis, the writer’s work is not autobiographical (according to Philippe Lejeune’s definition of the concept of autobiography) nor autofictional (Vincent Colonna), and it requires the coining of a new concept able to define it. We call this concept – which consists of the conscious and recurrent recreation of a meaningful autobiographical event through the means of literary fiction – a “transbiography”

For decades, chauvinist behaviour has transformed women into objects. However writers of the Fantastic or the Imaginery define them as complex beings worthy of interest. Homodiegetic narrator or protagonist, they constitute the founding element of these stories. By describing as unstable beings or prey to deep depression these authors draw attention to the dual nature and the fragmentation of their personnality in the face of masculine domination. Feminine characters take refuge in an interior universe, made up of memories and daydreams. Their vision of the surrounding world finds itself thus changed by the superposition of this private imaginary universe or the outside world. The confusion between dream and reality becomes stronger when women look themselves behind-closed doors where achiaroscuro favours at one and the same time introspection and the emergence of fantasising. The fantastic element develops all the more easily these characters try to recreate the play world of their childhood within their inner space. This space coreelated with the disturbing strangeness has similarities with the world of fairy stories where the animal and the object have humain characteristics. In this way mysterious, women arouse a fascination or a veritable fanaticism in their family circle where everyone wants to have absolute knowledge of the feminine character. The feminine chararcter paradoxically express limitless attraction for religious practise and for the parapsyche. Through their behaviour, at times extreme, women acquise within the cuple a superiority over men and sometimes absolute supremacy. Their imago commes remarkably closer to and identifies with that of the Devil. This mythic incarnation refers to the desire for the mystification of Woman (Cuentos de Amor/ de Locura y de Muerte, Quiroga, El Sur/ Bene, Garcia Morales, Cornelia Frente al Espejo/ Y Asi Sucesivamente, Ocampo, Queremos Tanto a Glenda, Cortazar, Le Testamment Français, Makine)

Taking as chronological markers the major changes that the French institutional landscape experiences, this work analyzes how cultural places become a field of critical action for artists. The first part shows that with the indexing of the work on the context in situ practices are the result of the logic of anchoring in society that 1960s artistic movements promote. By providing a genealogy of these practices from the works of Jean-Michel Sanejouand, Mark Brusse and Daniel Buren, the auhor argues that they are a necessary prerequisite for the questioning of cultural venues. The second part undertakes a discussion of the categories established by the historiography - mainly Anglo-Saxon. If the stories developed about the concept "Site specificity" and "Institutional critique" inform the discussion, it was proposed in return for review in the light of the French case, especially the work of André Cadere. The third part discusses the reports that the critical artistic practices have with the protest movements : after the uprisings of 1968, cultural veneus become real protest sites. By focusing on a series of significant events such as the Paris Biennials of 1969 and 1971, the "72-72" exhibition or opening of thez Pompidou Centre, the author explores the multiple positions and modes of critical action that invite in the field of cultural venues : reforming vision, activism, critical artistic practices. This work is thus an investigation on the relationship between social movements and artist critic in France from 1960-1970

Résumé :
This thesis explores how wholeness (tselostnost' or tsel'nost'), a central theme and impulse of Russian nineteenth-century philosophy, is expressed in the work of three different twentieth-century Russian artists. Tselostnost' is understood here as Russian philosophy‘s enduring preoccupation with the essential, original wholeness of the universe, an ideal state from which the human world has fallen and which man seeks to regain. Particular attention is paid to the way in which this idea was taken up and developed by a range of nineteenth-century Russian thinkers: Petr Chaadaev, Aleksei Khomiakov, Ivan Kireevskii, Nikolai Fedorov, Vladimir Solov‘ev and Fedor Dostoevskii. In their works, the vision of the universe as an ideal tselostnost' is connected with a number of key key concepts from Russian philosophy, among which are: tsel'noe znanie, sobornost', and vseedinstvo. The main body of the thesis bases its analysis on selected writings by Andrei Platonov (1899-1951) and Valentin Rasputin (1937- ), and on the cinematic oeuvre of Andrei Tarkovskii (1932-1986). It explores how in the work of all three artists, tselostnost' is repeatedly linked with the theme of memory, framing the worldviews they express and influencing their aesthetic. The work of these three men, crossing two artistic media and realised with different levels of complexity, also spans a historical period which stretches from the 1920s to the present. The choice of these three very different artists to explore these ideas is integral to the wider aim of this study, which is to investigate the pervasiveness and longevity of the ideal of the whole in Russian culture, as well as the consistency with which it has been expressed. In addition, the examination of the three artists' work is a contribution to the wider critical discussion about the close links between the Russian philosophical and literary traditions.

Résumé :
This work is premised on the assumption that the excuses for not engaging properly with Carl Andre's corpus will not stand forever, and that his art is capable of sustaining considerably more attention than it has been afforded to date. Focusing predominantly on a select number of works from 1959 (when Andre moved to New York City) to 1976 (the year of the media orchestrated uproar over the Tate Gallery's purchase of Equivalent VIII) this dissertation assessesth e singular nature of his brand of late modernism. Much to the chagrin of many, few US artists of the 1960s aligned themselves so intimately with a Marxist cause or thought so carefully about art's commodity status. This project takes these facts seriously and attempts to approach the art accordingly. The works discussed include America Drill (1963), the Equivalents (1966), Lever (1966), Gold Field (1966), 5x 20 Altstadt Rectangle (1967), Joint (1968), Quincy Book (1973), Twelfth Copper Corner (1975) and Manet (1980).

Résumé :
Im Zentrum des Aufsatzes »Livia als Emma« steht Luchino Viscontis Film »Senso« (1954, dt. »Sehnsucht«).

Abstract: Since the late-1930s, the emergence of a renewed cultural, technological and political approach towards the notion of climate reformulated the relationship between bodies and their milieux. This article analyses the works of Le Corbusier through the lens of this hypothesis of the hygienist paradigm’s evolution. Based on an original research at the archives of the Fondation Le Corbusier, this paper focuses on the theoretical discussions and the technical collaboration of the architect with André Missenard. This engineer, a key figure in the scientific, industrial and political environment of his time, played a main role to understand the relevance of the ambient dimension in Le Corbusier’s housing proposals in the 1950s. Résumé :
As of the date this paper is written pipelines in South America comprises 113000 kms of transmission lines including Oil, Gas, Condensates, and refined products from which approximately 17% (19400 kms) crosses the Andes reaching elevations up to near 5000mts. Rugged terrain combined with the geology, weather conditions (especially rain intensity) and continuous pipe ruptures in the past impose serious challenges for the pipeline industry that makes the design, construction and operation substantially different from other pipelines in the world. The records have shown that the threat of Ground movement/weather-related pipeline ruptures in the Andes plays a significant role since the percentage of the risk associated with geotechnical causes is substantially higher than any other parts such as Europe or United States. Thus the rate of pipeline failures due to natural forces is significant higher than the average industry. Peru LNG is a 406km × 34in gas pipeline transporting natural gas from the jungle side of Peru to the Pacific Coast where a LNG terminal has been installed. Peru LNG’s pipeline currently holds the record of being the highest Gas Pipeline of the world with a maximum elevation of 4901 meters above sea level. Project completion was done in May 2010 and lessons learnt from similar projects were taken into account since project designs. This paper is divided in two parts. First, it compares pipeline ruptures frequencies due to natural forces in the Andes with other pipelines in different terrains based on historical cases compiled by the authors. Secondly, it explains the different phases of Pipeline Project in rugged terrain from the conceptual design until the operations stage and the role of Pipeline Geotechnical Engineers in this process based on PERU LNG’s pipeline experience. It also describes some of the main features of the PLNG pipeline project. A comprehensive flow chart provides general guidance for future pipeline projects in similar conditions.

Abstract: With Marseille Housing Unit, the Atelier Le Corbusier began a transformation of its staff and methods. Frequently, this phase is known as Le Grand Atelier, receiving new challenges during its ending, and conceiving new elements for an “ineffable space”. With undefined boundaries, the Patient Research involved a transitional frame of mind opposing Le Corbusier to his own proceedings and to some of his collaborators. Pejoratively, the master named them as dattiers (datepalms), due to their alleged arrogance and low productivity. This work reconstructs several aspects of the internship of some South American collaborators on Le Corbusier at Paris between 1948 and 1959. Their participation was extended and intense, allowing them to reach, in some cases, the status of coordinators, and engaging works in all the scales. Even though just Augusto Tobito was directly called as dattier, his Colombian coworkers shared his rebellion, autonomy or skills. That is why we also use that adjective for them. We intend to create a complementary story for plenty of narratives about projects and influences of the French-Swiss architect in the Andes territory.Palabras clave: Le Corbusier; arquitectos modernos suramericanos; planes urbanos; proyectos de habitación.
