2013 - 2014<br>This study is specifically concerned with cult activities at Bronze Age tombs. This phenomenon, known as 'tomb cult', is not widespread all over Greece, evidences for definite and intensive worship are meager and some of the materials found in connection with chamber or tholos tombs may also be intrusive. By contrast, cults at Mycenaean tombs have gained attention in the last decades and have been described as an important means of self-definition; hero cult and ancestors cult, also, have been claimed as an interpretation of this kind of worship but no explanation seems to be really exhaustive. The main issue is to investigate the phenomenon with a proper methodology, which is actually lacking. In my research Data have been investigated with a philological and contextual approach, whose main aim was to evaluate the existence of a definite votive character in the depositions at Bronze Age tombs; “cult” and “ritual/sacred” activities have been distinguished from “profane” activities and conclusions have been drawn from both cultual and non-cultual examples. These data did not support the view that Bronze age tombs were object of cult: most often ancient tombs were not worshipped at all or were treated with disrespect. These results suggest the opportunity of a more articulated interpretation of the evidence and a reconsideration of the so-called “tomb cult” at Mycenaean tombs, which seems to be only a modern theoretical model that does not apply to the ancient world. Essa leitura está apoiada em três pontos, ou seja, a atuação discursiva de cada um dos narradores; o diálogo estabelecido entre os romances e outros textos literários; e o lugar dessas três narrativas no contexto da produção de Calvino. As três personagens singulares que povoam esses mundos são: um visconde simetricamente dividido, o qual passa a viver entre opostos inclusive no seu trato com a linguagem; um jovem barão, que de cima das copas das árvores acompanha e participa dos destinos da humanidade e até mesmo das mudanças no campo da literatura no final do século XVIII; e um cavaleiro que, apesar de ser o melhor dentre os paladinos do exército francês não é nada além de uma armadura vazia, sustentada por um conjunto de regras e instituições presentes no imaginário das novelas de cavalaria. Assim, as narrativas se propõem a tratar dos antepassados do homem contemporâneo, questionando as posturas positivistas e racionalistas do período conhecido como modernidade, além de serem textos cujos narradores se percebem como elementos de mundos ficcionais singulares e refletem sobre o ato de narrar. Considera-se ainda fundamental o papel do leitor como co-construtor de sentido, responsável enquanto instância discursiva pela existência de uma série infinita de interpretações iniciada pela leitura. It considers those novels as a landmark to the aesthetic choices that would follow the author along his work during the 20th century. This reading is supported by three points, which are the discourse of each narrator; the dialogue established between the novels and some other literary texts; and the position of these three novels in the context of Calvino’s works. The three singular characters who inhabit these worlds are a symmetrically divided viscount, who starts to live between oppositions, including his way of dealing with language; an young baron, who is on the top of the trees and who follows and participates in the destiny of mankind and even in the changes on literary issues at the end of the 18th century; and a knight who, though he is the best among French army paladins, is nothing beside an empty piece of armor, supported by a framework of rules and institutions that is related to the cavalry novels imaginary. Thus, these narratives propose to discuss the ancestors of contemporary men, by questioning the positivist and rationalist positions of the period known as modernity, moreover they are texts whose narrators see themselves as some singular fictional world components and they reflect about the narrative act itself. Il mio progetto di ricerca (come già il mio lavoro di tesi magistrale), nasce all’interno di una serie di indagini avviate a Pavia in questi ultimi anni sul sistema delle note in Gadda, coordinate dalla prof.ssa Clelia Martignoni. Tema di fondo del mio lavoro è la ricerca particolare, all’interno dell’esplorazione per così dire “genealogica” del sistema, di possibili modelli ispirativi della singolare prassi annotativa gaddiana. Al di là della filiazione più o meno diretta, si è tentato in primo luogo di definire una tipologia più generale dell’uso in una serie di illustri scritture europee (ma non soltanto) ascrivibili prevalentemente a Sette e Ottocento, ma anche ad autori primo-novecenteschi. Ai fini della mia ricerca si è rivelata molto utile una prima esplorazione di ciò che resta della biblioteca di Gadda, oggi custodita, nella sua parte più consistente, presso il fondo romano del Burcardo, oltre che, in minor misura, nei fondi milanesi della biblioteca Trivulziana (in particolare il fondo Roscioni) e nel fondo Liberati di Villafranca di Verona.

Il fondamento della paragone sarà strutturata attraverso un dialogo intertestuale tra le opere. Il progetto di risignificazione delle opere visto come un insieme sommato alla visitazione del passato della tradizione letteraria guida l’analisi dei racconti e rappresenta le consonanze poetiche investigate in questa ricerca. L’apparente rottura con l’estetica degli anni ‘50 promuove il movimento convergente delle due opere e incita all’innovazione dei valori conferiti all’estetica chiamata postmoderna.<br>O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar o processo de renovação da literatura por meio do trabalho de Italo Calvino em I nostri antenati e João Guimarães Rosa em Primeiras estórias. A base da comparação será estruturada através de um diálogo intertextual entre as obras. O projeto de ressignificação das obras enquanto conjunto somado à visitação ao passado da tradição literária norteia a análise das narrativas, configurando as consonâncias poéticas investigadas nessa pesquisa. pongono nella guarigione divina, nella protezione e nella liberazione dalle forze del male. Inoltre la ricerca vuole porre attenzione alle credenze religiose locali come saperi e discorsi che circolano in quel
determinato contesto socio-culturale della città di Maputo, fondati sulla ricerca dell'armonia tra i vivi e i morti. E' in questo quadro del dialogo continuo tra i vivi e i morti che si situa un'ampia e crescente
aderenza di fedeli alle credenze e tradizioni religiose nel sud. Inoltre si esamineranno la figura del pastore /zione/ e le reti sociali che questi attiva all'interno della società mozambicana, oltre che le relazioni e le strategie di potere che vengono prodotte all'interno dell'/igreja/.

ceramics materials with a high dielectric constant, whether acting as a substract element of patch radiating or as the radiant element are in evidence in current research, that due to
the numerous advantages offered, such as: low profile, ability to reduce the its dimensions when compared to other devices, high efficiency of ratiation, suitability the microwave
range and/or millimeter wave, low temperature coefficient and low cost. The reason for this high efficiency is that the dielectric losses of ceramics are very low when compared to commercially materials sold used in printed circuit boards, such
as fiberglass and phenolite. These characteristics make ceramic devices suitable for operation in the microwave band. Combining the design of patch antennas and/or dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) to certain materials and the method of synthesis of these powders in the manufacture of devices, it s possible choose a material with a dielectric constant appropriate for the design of an antenna with the desired size.
The main aim of this work is the design of patch antennas and DRA antennas on synthesis of ceramic powders (synthesis by combustion and polymeric precursors - Pe- chini method) nanostructured with applications in the microwave band. The conventional method of mix oxides was also used to obtain nanometric powders for the preparation of tablets and dielectric resonators. The devices manufactured and studied on high dielectric constant materials make them good candidates to have their small size compared to other devices operating at the same frequency band. The structures analyzed are excited
by three different techniques: i) microstrip line, ii) aperture coupling and iii) inductive coupling. The efficiency of these techniques have been investigated experimentally and
compared with simulations by Ansoft HFSS, used in the accurate analysis of the electromagnetic behavior of antennas over the finite element method (FEM). In this thesis a
literature study on the theory of microstrip antennas and DRA antenna is performed. The same study is performed about the materials and methods of synthesis of ceramic powders, which are used in the manufacture of tablets and dielectric cylinders that make up the devices investigated. The dielectric media which were used to support the analysis of the DRA and/or patch antennas are analyzed using accurate simulations using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) based on the relative electrical permittivity (er) and loss tangent of these means
(tand). This work also presents a study on artificial neural networks, showing the network architecture used and their characteristics, as well as the training algorithms that were used
in training and modeling some parameters associated with the devices investigated<br>A busca por dispositivos cada vez menores e sem perda de desempenho vem sendo cada dia mais investigada pelos pesquisadores da ?rea envolvendo eletromagnetismo apli-
cado. Antenas utilizando materiais cer?micos com uma alta constante diel?trica, sejam elas atuando como substrato do elemento patch radiante ou como sendo o pr?prio ele-
mento radiante est?o em evid?ncia nas pesquisas atuais, isso devido ?s in?meras vantagens que apresentam, tais como: baixo perfil, capacidade de redu??o de suas dimens?es
(quando comparado a outros dispositivos), alta efici?ncia de radia??o, adequabilidade a faixa de micro-ondas e/ou ondas milim?tricas, baixo coeficiente de temperatura e baixo
custo. A raz?o para essa alta efici?ncia ? que as perdas diel?tricas das cer?micas s?o muito baixas, quando comparadas ?s dos materiais comercialmente usados em placas de circuito
impresso, tais como: fibra de vidro e fenolite. Essas caracter?sticas tornam os dispositivos cer?micos adequados para operar na faixa de micro-ondas. Aliando o projeto de antenas patch e/ou antenas ressoadoras diel?tricas (DRA) ao uso de certos materiais e ao m?todo de s?ntese desses p?s na fabrica??o dos dispositivos, ? poss?vel escolher um material com
uma determinada constante diel?trica para o projeto de uma antena com o tamanho desejado. O objetivo principal deste trabalho consiste no projeto de antenas patches e antenas
DRA sob s?ntese de p?s cer?micos (s?ntese por combust?o e por precursores polim?ricos - m?todo Pechini) nanoestruturados para aplica??es na faixa de micro-ondas. O m?todo
convencional de mistura de ?xidos tamb?m foi utilizado na obten??o de p?s nanom?tricos para a confec??o das pastilhas e ressoadores diel?tricos. Os dispositivos fabricados
e estudados sobre materiais de alta constante diel?trica os tornam bons candidatos ? fabrica??o de dispositivos e circuitos de dimens?es reduzidas quando comparado aos outros
dispositivos tradicionais operando na mesma faixa de frequ?ncia. As estruturas analisadas s?o excitadas por tr?s diferentes t?cnicas: i) linha de microfita, ii) acoplamento por abertura e iii) acoplamento indutivo. A efici?ncia dessas t?cnicas de alimenta??o s?o investigadas experimentalmente e comparada com simula??es realizadas pelo Ansoft HFSS,
utilizado na an?lise precisa do comportamento eletromagn?tico das antenas atrav?s do m?todo dos elementos finitos (FEM). Nesta tese um estudo bibliogr?fico sobre teoria de
antenas de microfita e antenas DRA ? realizado. O mesmo estudo ? realizado a respeito dos materiais e dos m?todos de s?ntese dos p?s cer?micos que s?o utilizados na fabri-
ca??o das pastilhas e dos cil?ndros diel?tricos que compor?o os dispositivos investigados. Os meios diel?tricos os quais serviram de suporte na an?lise das antenas patch e/ou DRA
s?o analisados atrav?s de simula??es precisas utilizando o m?todo das diferen?as finitas no dom?nio do tempo (FDTD) com base na permissividade el?trica relativa (er) e tangente
de perda desses meios (tand). Este trabalho ainda apresenta um estudo em redes neurais artificiais, evidenciando a arquitetura de rede utilizada e suas caracter?sticas, bem como
os algoritmos de treinamento que foram usados no treinamento e na modelagem de alguns par?metros associados aos dispositivos investigados

Attachment refers to a strong emotional bond with special people in a person?s life, in whose presence the person experiences pleasure, joy and comfort in times of stress. The first attachment in life is commonly formed between an infant and primary caregiver, which is usually the mother. The caregiving provided by the mother or caregiver will determine whether a secure or insecure attachment pattern is formed. Attachment theory indicates that this first attachment forms the basis for a cognitive representation, the so-called internal working model, which becomes part of the person?s personality and forms the foundation of the person?s perception of the self and the world as well as of all future interpersonal relationships.
As infancy is a sensitive period for the development of attachment, the prenatal period could be an appropriate time to educate expecting mothers about the importance of secure attachment and their role in the development thereof. The researcher therefore wished to explore whether antenatal programmes could be used as a platform for teaching expecting mothers about attachment. As a starting point, the goal of this study was to explore the perceptions of antenatal programme presenters on including training on attachment into antenatal programmes.
The study was based on a qualitative research approach, and applied research as the type of research. A collective case study research design was adopted and data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews that were conducted with a sample of ten presenters of antenatal programmes in the Tshwane district. The participants were selected by means of purposive sampling. Data was analysed according to methods for qualitative data analysis, and relevant ethical considerations were followed during the study.
The research findings indicate that the participants were aware of the importance and benefits of secure attachment and that they had a positive attitude towards the inclusion of training on attachment into antenatal programmes. They were eager to receive training on attachment and to adapt their programmes to include training on attachment.
The researcher concludes that it would be feasible and beneficial to include training on attachment into antenatal programmes, and to train antenatal programme presenters for this purpose. The provision of training on attachment to nurses and raising awareness of attachment in the private and public health care sectors could facilitate greater knowledge of attachment for expecting mothers. Dessa forma, este trabalho apresenta an?lises, simula??es e medi??es de antenas de microfitas para aplica??o em: redes locais sem fio WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) com opera??o em 2,4 GHz; tecnologia de quarta gera??o 4G para o uso em 2,5 GHz; tecnologia de quinta gera??o 5G nas frequ?ncias de 28 GHz e 60 GHz; aplica??es em UWB (Ultra Wide Band) com bandas de rejei??o utilizando ressoadores de anel partido; sat?lites com opera??o na banda Ku e aplica??o em telemetria utilizando estruturas cil?ndricas operando na faixa de 2 a 4 GHz, na banda S. Foram feitas an?lises com aplica??o de estrutura EBG (Electromagnetic Band Gap) no substrato e no plano de terra, utiliza??o de substrato metamaterial, aplica??o de estruturas DGS (Defected Ground Strutures) no plano de terra e arranjos, com objetivo de obter melhoria nos par?metros, em especial ganho e largura de banda. O m?todo de an?lise das antenas de microfita utilizado neste trabalho foi o m?todo de Linha de Transmiss?o Transversa. Os resultados simulados foram obtidos atrav?s do software comercial Ansoft HFSS. Compara??es entre os resultados simulados e medidos das antenas propostas foram realizados para efeito de valida??o dos prot?tipos. Ao final, s?o apresentadas sugest?es para a continuidade deste trabalho.<br>Nowadays there has been a major breakthrough in aerospace, in telemetry system, remote sensing, radar systems (tracking and monitoring), satellite communications systems and new technologies for voice and data communications. The microstrip antennas have increasingly been used due to their characteristics and advantages. Thus, this work presents analysis, simulations and measurements of microstrip antenna for use in: wireless local area networks WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) with operation at 2.4 GHz; fourth generation 4G technology for use in 2.5 GHz; fifth-generation technology 5G at frequencies of 28 GHz and 60 GHz; applications in UWB (Ultra Wide Band) with rejection bands using resonators party ring; satellites operating in the Ku band and application in telemetry using cylindrical structures operating at 2 to 4 GHz band, the S band. Analysis were made with application of EBG structure (Electromagnetic Band Gap) on substrate and in the ground plane, using substrate metamaterial, application DGS structures (Defected Ground Structures) in the ground plane and arrangements, in order to achieve improvement in the parameters, in particular gain and bandwidth. The method of analysis of microstrip antennas used in this work was the Transverse Transmission Line method. The simulated results were obtained by Ansoft HFSS commercial software. Comparisons between simulated and measured results of the antennas proposals were made for effect of validation of the prototypes. Suggestions are made for the continuity of this work.

por material dielétrico sobre a qual é impressa uma antena anular. É apresentado um método de análise para obtenção das características de radiação de antenas cônicas anulares embutidas e os efeitos da cavidade sobre essas grandezas são observadas, comparando-se os resultados aos obtidos pelo software comercial de simulação eletromagnética HFSS. Uma formulação teórica baseada no princípio da equivalência
é desenvolvida de forma que os campos eletromagnéticos no interior e no exterior da
cavidade são determinados através de diádicas de Green. A partir de condições de contorno na antena, uma equação integral é formulada. A técnica numérica utilizada
para resolvê-la é o método dos momentos, expandindo densidades de corrente magnética equivalentes em funções de base. Resultados numéricos para o ganho e impedância de entrada são apresentados validando o método de análise apresentado.<br>This work presents an analysis of cavity-backed conical annular antennas. This type of
antenna consists of a cavity built within a conical conductor and filled up with dielectric
over which an annular antenna is printed. A method of analysis to calculate antenna parameters is presented and the effect of the cavity on the antenna behavior is studied. Results are compared to those obtained from comercial electromagnetic simulation software HFSS. A theoretical formulation based on equivalence principle is developed
in a way that the fields inside and outside the cavity are calculated with the aid of dyadic Green’s functions. An integral equation is written from boundary conditions and solved by Method of Moments once the equivalent magnetic currents are expanded in a set of basis functions. Numerical results for input impedance and radiated fields are shown validating the proposed method.

Nesse trabalho são avaliadas antenas impressas e de microfita, linearmente e circularmente polarizadas, objetivando empregá-las em sistemas de comunicações móveis. Contrapondo a tendência usual de se utilizar laminados de microondas importados de baixas perdas, porém excessivamente caros para os padrões nacionais, optou-se pela sua substituição, sempre que possível, por material mais barato e de fabricação nacional, porém com perdas acentuadas. Para viabilizar esta opção, problemas de engenharia, como o aumento da eficiência de irradiação em materiais com perdas elevadas e técnicas de compensação da reatância de entrada de antenas espessas alimentadas por pontas de prova coaxiais, tiveram que ser abordados. Como resultado, diversas antenas com desempenhos elétricos muito bons foram desenvolvidas. Inicialmente é estabelecida uma nova estratégia para o projeto de antenas de microfita linearmente polarizadas, excitadas por pontas de prova coaxiais. O modelo da linha de transmissão é utilizado na formalização desta estratégia. Em seguida é realizado um estudo, agora com auxílio do método da cavidade ressonante, da eficiência de irradiação dessas antenas, concluindo pela possibilidade de se construir irradiadores em substratos com perdas elevadas e eficiência de irradiação aceitável, desde que espessos. Este fato aumenta substancialmente a reatância indutiva da impedância de entrada de antenas linearmente polarizadas ou não. Para contornar esse problema, diversas soluções são consideradas. No caso de antenas circularmente polarizadas, o capacitor impresso com ranhura fractal e a geometria retangular com cantos truncados são duas importantes soluções. Esta última resolveu, de forma original, o problema relacionado ao casamento da antena espessa, que há muito vinha dificultando a sua utilização. Esta é, portanto, uma importante contribuição ao desenvolvimento de antenas espessas, sejam elas de baixo custo ou não. As antenas impressas também são analisadas para aplicações específicas do sistema GSM/GPRS. Monopolo impresso e rede Yagi-Uda destes elementos são avaliados. Em ambos os casos, a ênfase recai em estruturas faixa-larga. Resultados experimentais para diagramas de irradiação e impedâncias de entrada das antenas projetadas, são apresentados e discutidos. Aborda-se também um método de medição da eficiência de irradiação de antenas de microfita circularmente polarizadas.

Um modelo circuital equivalente para o cálculo da função diádica de Green espectral transversal de estruturas multicamadas esféricas e planas é proposto neste trabalho. São estudadas estruturas multicamadas planas constituídas não só por meios isotrópicos, mas também por meios uniaxiais, biaxiais e quirais. Uma antena Yagi-Uda impressa é analisada via MoM para ilustrar a potencialidade do modelo circuital equivalente quando associado às ferramentas de cálculo simbólico e numérico do software Mathematica. Também são analisadas algumas topologias canônicas de antenas de microfita esféricas através do método da corrente elétrica superficial e do modelo da cavidade ressonante. Expressões para o cálculo da impedância de entrada, do campo elétrico distante irradiado, da diretividade, do fator de qualidade de meia potência e da eficiência de irradiação destas antenas são derivadas de forma analítica. Um programa que analisa e sintetiza estes irradiadores esféricos, que utiliza o modelo teórico desenvolvido, é implementado em Mathematica. Emprega-se a técnica do sistema de coordenadas global para avaliar o diagrama de irradiação de redes de antenas de microfita esféricas. Os resultados obtidos a partir do modelo de análise proposto são comparados com os dados de saída das simulações dos irradiadores no software de análise de onda completa HFSS. Por fim, são confeccionados e qualificados dois protótipos com o objetivo de validar a teoria apresentada ao longo do trabalho.

Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e Telecomunicações<br>A tecnologia RFID tem vindo a ganhar popularidade no mercado global atual,
dado que a capacidade de comunicação por ondas de rádio com praticamente
qualquer objeto, a simplicidade, credibilidade e reduzido custo justi cam o
crescente interesse e investimento nesta tecnologia. A indústria têxtil é
um setor de atividade extenso e multifacetado, que desenvolve e fabrica
produtos para aplicações bastante diferenciadas, onde a aplicabilidade da
tecnologia RFID pode trazer inúmeras vantagens nesta indústria, uma vez
que a aposta em inovação, tanto em materiais como em tecnologias, permite
a diferenciação e valorização desta indústria.
A presente dissertação propõe o desenvolvimento de três tags RFID: uma
desenvolvida apenas em substrato FR-4, outra desenvolvida somente em
substrato têxtil, e por último, uma desenvolvida conjuntamente em substrato
FR-4 e têxtil. Esta última constituiu o objeto principal de estudo, onde em
conjunto com as outras duas tags, serviram como meio de comparação em
termos dos resultados obtidos por cada uma delas.
Em suma, conseguiu-se chegar a uma solução nal viável, com o desenvolvimento
de uma tag RFID capaz de ser incorporada em têxtil para ns
de identi cação, de dimensões 30 30 mm e passível de ser detetada a
3:8 metros.<br>RFID technology has been gaining popularity in the current global market
because the ability that radio waves have to communicate with nearly any
object, its simplicity, credibility and low cost justi es the increasing interest
and investment in this technology. The textile industry is an extensive and
multifaceted activity sector that develops and manufactures products to a
wild range of applications, where the applicability of RFID technology can
bring numerous advantages to it, since innovation in both materials and
technologies allows di erentiation and appreciation to this industry.
The present dissertation proposes the development of three RFID tags: one
developed only on FR-4 substrate, one merely on textile substrate and nally
one developed using both substrates (textile and FR-4). This last one was
the main object of study, where together with the other two tags, served as
means of comparison in terms of results obtained by each of them.
In sum, a viable nal solution was achieved through the development of an
RFID tag capable of being incorporated onto a textile substrate for identi -
cation purposes, with dimensions of 30 30 mm and susceptible of being
detected at 3; 8 meters.

This thesis explores the advantages and disadvantages of various aspects of antenatal carrier screening for cystic fibrosis, taking into account both psychological and economic factors. It also provides information specific to the implementation of screening within Grampian region. Following the introductory literature review, a population genetic study of CF in Grampian region is described. In addition to giving information about the incidence and prevalence of the disease itself, the relative frequencies of the common CF mutations are detailed. Next, there is an assessment of different molecular methods for CF mutation detection. The remainder of the thesis comprises a comparative evaluation of two different approaches to antenatal CF carrier screening, namely step-wise (disclosure) and couple (non-disclosure) testing. The evaluation covers both psychological and economic aspects of screening. Grampian was found to have a higher prevalence of the common CF mutation F508 than the southern Scottish population. Thus testing for the four commonest mutations allows detection of 92% of carriers. The use of multiplex ARMS, dot-blotting and a deletion/digest/PAGE method were compared. The multiplex ARMS system was sensitive, specific and robust, and required less labour than the other methods. Step-wise antenatal carrier screening was found to be associated with transiently high levels of anxiety amongst carriers, which dissipates when a negative partner's result is received. For the majority of screenees who will test negative, couple screening is associated with more anxiety and false reassurance. Step-wise screening was found to be slightly less expensive than couple screening. When asked to state their preferred method, more women chose step-wise than couple screening.

In late gestation, fetal endogenous glucocorticoids increase exponentially. This dramatic increase in glucocorticoids acts to mature several organ systems. As a result, synthetic glucocorticoids (sGCs) are administered to pregnant women at risk of delivering pre-term (>10% of all pregnancies). While this treatment is highly effective in the fetal lung, little is known concerning its long-term consequences in humans. Animal studies have demonstrated that offspring prenatally exposed to sGCs are at risk of behavioral abnormalities and modifications in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and endocrine function; this involves long-term changes in gene expression. Given that the effects of antenatal sGC exposure are stable, long lasting and can manifest across generations, in concert with the fact that early life exposure has the ability to modify the epigenome of offspring, we now hypothesize that epigenetic mechanisms are the route by which sGC permanently modifies behavior and endocrine function in offspring. DNA methylation is a covalent modification of DNA, which plays an essential role in generating stable changes in gene expression. For this reason, the impact of late gestational development and antenatal sGC treatment on global methylation has been investigated. Our results demonstrated organ-specific changes in global methylation, which occur following the endogenous cortisol surge. Further, we noted that these modifications in global methylation could be prematurely initiated by intrauterine exposure to sGC. However, long-term, these sGC-induced global DNA methylation changes are further altered, and these changes are present into adulthood and persist in the next generation. Further, our data indicated that prenatal sGC exposure impacts the expression of several key genes involved in epigenetic regulation.Determining the genome-wide fetal epigenetic landscape was of critical importance to begin to elucidate the mechanisms by which glucocorticoid exposure in late gestation generates its long-term consequences. High-density promoter microarrays identified the fetal hippocampal promoter regions that exhibited differential DNA methylation and Histone-3-lysine-9 (H3K9) acetylation. Our results indicated that the fetal glucocorticoid surge is partially responsible for significantly modifying promoter methylation in a large number of genes. Further, we observed that antenatal sGC exposure significantly impacts DNA methylation and H3K9 acetylation in the fetal hippocampus. The impact of elevated fetal glucocorticoid exposure was further investigated using genome-wide transcription arrays. We noted that exposure to excess glucocorticoids in late gestation substantially altered the mRNA levels of a broad number of genes. Further, we identified fetal hippocampal promoter regulatory regions, in which the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) is bound during late gestational development and following antenatal sGC therapy. Considering the extensive clinical use of antenatal sGC therapy, the data within this thesis are essential, as they provide an understanding of the long-term epigenetic consequences of such a treatment, in a relevant animal model. Further, it advances our knowledge of fetal programming and the underlying mechanisms associated with antenatal sGC treatment.<br>À la fin de la gestation, les niveaux de glucocorticoïdes endogènes fœtaux augmentent de façon exponentielle. Cette augmentation spectaculaire des glucocorticoïdes agit sur la maturation de nombreux organes. En conséquence, des glucocorticoïdes de synthèse (sGC) sont administrés aux femmes enceintes qui risquent d'accoucher avant terme (>10% des grossesses). Tandis que ce traitement est hautement efficace pour la maturation pulmonaire du fœtus, peu de choses sont connues quant à ses conséquences sur le long terme chez l'homme. Des études chez l'animal ont montré que la progéniture exposée aux sGC pendant la gestation présentait un risque de développer des anomalies de comportement et des modifications dans l'axe hypothalamo-hypophyso-surrénalien (HPA) ainsi que dans les fonctions endocrines; ceci impliquant des changements à long terme de l'expression génique. De plus, Il a été montré que les effets de l'exposition anténatale aux sGC étaient stables, durables et pouvaient se manifester à travers plusieurs générations. Il a récemment été établit que l'exposition au début de la vie avait la capacité de modifier l'épigénome de la descendance. Une unique étude a montré que les sGC pouvaient augmenter l'expression génique dans le foie fœtal par le biais d'une déméthylation de l'ADN des promoteurs. Ainsi, nous avons proposé que des mécanismes épigénétiques pouvaient représenter une voie par laquelle les sGC modifient de façon permanente le comportement et les fonctions endocrines de la progéniture. La méthylation de l'ADN est une modification covalente de l'ADN qui joue un rôle essentiel dans la mise en place de changements stables de l'expression génique. Pour cette raison, l'impact du traitement aux sGC lors du développement gestationnel tardif et anténatal sur les niveaux de méthylation globale a été examiné. Nos résultats montrent des changements dans la méthylation globale spécifiques aux organes, qui se produisent après la poussée de cortisol endogène. De plus, nous avons noté que ces modifications de méthylation globale pouvaient être initiées prématurément par l'exposition intra-utérine aux sGC. Cependant, à long terme, ces changements de méthylation globale, induits par les sGC, sont altérés et ces changements sont présents à l'âge adulte et persistent dans la génération suivante. Par ailleurs, nos données indiquent que l'exposition prénatale aux sGC a un impact sur l'expression de plusieurs gènes clés de la régulation épigénétique. Déterminer le paysage épigénétique à l'échelle du génome entier revêtait une importance capitale pour commencer à élucider les mécanismes par lesquels l'exposition aux glucocorticoïdes en fin de gestation pouvait induire des conséquences à long terme. Des micropuces à haute densité des promoteurs ont permis d'identifier les régions des promoteurs dans l'hippocampe fœtal qui présentaient des différences de méthylation de l'ADN et de l'acétylation de la lysine 9 des histones 3 (H3K9). Nos résultats indiquent que la poussée de glucocorticoïdes fœtaux est partiellement responsable des modifications significatives de la méthylation des promoteurs d'un grand nombre de gènes. De plus, nous avons observé que l'exposition anténatale aux sGC avait un impact significatif sur la méthylation de l'ADN et l'acétylation de H3K9 dans l'hippocampe fœtal. L'impact de l'exposition à des niveaux élevés de glucocorticoïdes fœtaux a été étudié plus avant en utilisant des puces de transcription du génome entier. Nous avons noté que l'exposition à un excès de glucocorticoïdes altérait considérablement les niveaux d'expression génique, et ces changements d'expression sont associés aux niveaux de méthylation de l'ADN de leurs promoteurs. D'autre part, nous avons identifié des régions régulatrices dans les promoteurs dans l'hippocampe fœtal, dans lesquelles GR se lie lors de la gestation tardive et de la thérapie anténatale aux sGC.

Previous issue date: 2014<br>O presente trabalho apresenta um projeto e análise de uma antena monopolo planar
multibanda operante nas frequências de 2000 MHz, 2500 MHz e 3500 MHz para aplicação
em dispositivos móveis 3G e 4G. Dentre essas faixas estão contidos os espectros 3G (1895-
2165 MHz), 4G (2500-2690 MHz) e 4G (3400-3600 MHz) utilizadas pelo LTE e WIMAX 3,5.
Para o desenvolvimento desse estudo foi tomado como referência uma antena dual-band de Hua-
Ming Chen projetada para operar em sistemas ISM 1800 MHz, redes Wireless e Bluetooth 2400
MHz. O projeto proposto neste trabalho é uma modificação na estrutura da antena dual-band
adaptada para tripla ressonância simultânea em frequências utilizadas em redes móveis 4G.
Para alcançar o objetivo proposto utilizou-se para simulação o software CST®
MICROWAVE STUDIO baseado no método Integração Finita no Domínio, as simulações
foram feitas no domínio do tempo. Após obtenção satisfatória dos resultados simulados, um
protótipo da antena foi confeccionado para medição e teste, os resultados apresentados são
coerentes aos obtidos na simulação, o que valida o método proposto.<br>This paper presents a design and analysis of a planar monopole antenna operating in
multiband frequencies of 2000 MHz, 2500 MHz and 3500 MHz for use in 3G and 4G mobile
devices. Among these bands are contained 3G (1895-2165 MHz), 4G (2500-2690 MHz) and
4G (3400-3600 MHz) spectra used by LTE and WIMAX 3.5. For the development of this
study was taken as reference Hua-Ming Chen’s dual-band antenna designed to operate at ISM
systems (1800 MHz), wireless networks and Bluetooth (2400 MHz). The project proposed in
this work is a modification in the structure of the dual-band antenna adapted for simultaneous
triple resonance frequencies used in 4G mobile networks. To achieve the proposed objective
was used to simulate the CST® MICROWAVE STUDIO software based on the Finite
Integration method in Domain; the simulations were done in the time domain. After obtaining
satisfactory simulated results, a prototype antenna was built to test and measurement; the
presented results are consistent with those obtained in the simulation, which validates the
proposed method.

Nano antennas are characterized as a promising new branch in the development of devices capable of being applied in different areas, in addition to communication. Occupying a prominent place in the new era of technologies, the nano antennas, here restricted only to dipole and microstrip, generate enormous expectations about this new revolution, not only between researchers, but also in a part of society. Currently, wireless communications require that radiator devices have wide bandwidth and miniaturization for mobile devices, so this dissertation discusses the potential application of antennas for communications in the frequency range in Terahertz. At these frequencies, there are numerous restrictions on the propagation of signals, so high performance antenna are necessary to allow communication with reduced losses. The purpose of this work is to study some configurations and types of antennas, such as microstrip antenna and dipole antenna, with application in the subterahertz frequency, which can be used, for example, in internal networks, medicine, photovoltaic power generation, spectroscopy, near-field microscopy and high quality images. Some configurations of antennas with various materials for communications in the frequency range will be presented to verify the feasibility of the use of nano dipole antennas and miniaturized microstrip antennas in this type of application. The methodology adopted suggests the comparison of the simulated results, through the software Ansoft HFSS ® and CST Microwave Studio ®, with the results of other published works<br>As antenas em escalas nanométrica fazem parte de uma linha de pesquisa que vem aumentando nos últimos anos, sendo alvo de inúmeros estudos e publicações. As nanoantenas caracterizam-se como um novo e promissor ramo no desenvolvimento de dispositivos capazes de ser aplicados em diferentes áreas, além da comunicação. Ocupando lugar de destaque na nova era das tecnologias, as nanoantenas, aqui restritas somente as de dipolo e microfita, geram enorme expectativas. Atualmente as comunicações sem fio requer que os dispositivos radiadores possuam uma ampla largura de banda e miniaturização para dispositivos móveis, assim, essa dissertação discute a aplicação potencial de antenas para comunicações na faixa de frequência em Terahertz. Nessas frequências existem inúmeras restrições na propagação de sinais, então antenas com alto rendimento são necessárias para permitir comunicação com perdas reduzidas. A proposta desse trabalho é estudar algumas configurações e tipos de antenas, tais como de antena de microfita e antena dipolo, com aplicação na faixa de frequência em subterahertz, que podem ser utilizadas, por exemplo, nas redes internas, medicina, na geração de energia fotovoltaica, espectroscopia, microscopia de campo próximo e obtenção de imagens de alta qualidade. Serão apresentadas algumas configurações de antenas e com diversos materiais para comunicações na faixa de frequência em questão, para verificar a viabilidade do uso de nanoantenas de dipolo e de antenas de microfita miniaturizadas neste tipo de aplicação. Neste trabalho, foram desenvolvidas antenas têxteis de micro-ondas para aplicação em sistemas vestíveis, operando nas bandas ISM de 2,45 GHz e 5,8 GHz. Foram compiladas informações sobre o estado da arte em antenas têxteis, sendo realizado um estudo sobre antenas planares de micro-ondas e técnicas de alimentação das mesmas. Foi feita uma prospecção dos processos de fabricação de antenas têxteis de micro-ondas, definindo-se o processo e materiais têxteis usados na construção das antenas desenvolvidas. Procedeu-se à caracterização do tecido usado como substrato das antenas determinando-se suas características eletromagnéticas, utilizadas no projeto das antenas. Foram desenvolvidas antenas de microfita com plaqueta retangular e alimentação por sonda coaxial, para banda ISM de 2,45 GHz. Investigou-se o efeito da espessura do substrato da antena, tendo-se obtido experimentalmente larguras de banda de 4,8% e 6,0% para substratos com 0,7 mm e 1,4 mm de espessura, respectivamente. Foi proposta uma antena de microfita alimentada via acoplamento por proximidade que integra um transformador de um quarto de comprimento de onda ao circuito de alimentação, resultando em alargamento de banda da antena. Essa configuração foi utilizada no projeto de quatro antenas, que demonstraram experimentalmente larguras de banda de 11,2%, 13,4%, 17,0% e 24,0%. Uma configuração de antena têxtil empregando cavidade de um quarto de modo foi proposta para operação em banda dupla, sendo a tecnologia de guia de ondas integrado ao substrato - SIW, empregada em sua fabricação. Foi desenvolvido um procedimento de projeto para essa antena, o qual foi aplicado ao projeto de uma antena de banda dupla para as faixas ISM e 2,45 GHz e 5,8 GHz. Os resultados experimentais demostraram operação em banda dupla, com largura da banda inferior de 9,3%, e largura da banda superior de 9,2%. A antena de cavidade de quarto de modo apresentou as vantagens de maior ganho e menores dimensões relativamente às antenas têxteis de microfita desenvolvidas. De forma geral, os resultados experimentais dos protótipos construídos apresentaram boa concordância com os resultados fornecidos por simulação, demonstrando que as configurações de antenas propostas atenderam a seus objetivos, e a efetividade dos procedimentos de projeto adotado.<br>In this work, textile microwave antennas for use in wearable systems operating at 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz ISM bands were developed. Information on the state of art in textile antennas were compiled, and a study on microwave planar antennas and feeding techniques was performed. Processes for manufacturing textile microwave antennas were presented, and the fabrication process and textile materials used in this work were defined. The electromagnetic characteristics of the fabric used as antenna substrate were experimentally obtained, and used in the antenna design. Microstrip antennas using rectangular patch and coaxial probe feed were designed to operate at the 2.45 GHz ISM band. The effect of the antenna substrate thickness on the antenna characteristics was investigated, and experimental bandwidths of 4,8% and 6% were demonstrated for antennas with 0.7 mm and 1.4 mm thick substrates, respectively. A microstrip antenna fed by proximity coupling, including a quarter wavelength transformer at the feeding circuit, was proposed, resulting in the widening of the antenna bandwidth. This configuration was used to design four antennas, which experimentally demonstrated bandwidths of 11.2%, 13.4%, 17.0% and 24.0%. A textile antenna configuration employing a fourth mode cavity was proposed for dual band operation. Substrate integrated waveguide technology - SIW, was used for the antenna manufacturing. A design procedure was developed for this antenna, which has been applied to the design of a dual band antenna for the 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz ISM bands. The experimental results of this antenna demonstrated dual band operation, with 9.3% bandwidth at the lower band and 9.2% bandwidth at the higher band. The quarter mode cavity antenna presented the advantages of increased gain and smaller area than the designed textile microstrip antennas. In general, the experimental results of the fabricated prototypes exhibited good agreement with the results provided by simulation, demonstrating that the textile antenna configurations proposed met their expected performance and validating the design procedures adopted.

Previous issue date: 2015-02-23<br>FAPESPA - Fundação Amazônia de Amparo a Estudos e Pesquisas<br>Estruturas denominadas derivados de dendrímeros (DD) possuem propriedades eletrônicas fascinantes, do ponto de vista tecnológico, completamente diferentes das obtidas apenas pelos seus constituintes básicos e com estados discretos de condutividade que emergem das vizinhanças dos pontos de Fermi. Um fator preponderante na engenharia de DD é sua dimensionalidade. Experimentos usando espectroscopia molecular (Raman) e microscopia de alta resolução (TEM, AFM e STM) confirmaram a natureza n-D de seus elétrons. Eles concluíram que a dimensionalidade de um DD tem uma influência profunda sobre suas propriedades físicas.
Essa característica peculiar de ajuste das propriedades eletrônicas de acordo com a geometria, somada às dimensões reduzidas, gerou uma grande corrida tecnológica com o objetivo de se desenvolver dispositivos eletrônicos (diodos, transistores, portas lógicas, displays,...) a partir de DD. Algumas aplicações interessantes referem-se à utilização de DD como: antenas mediante a modificação das propriedades de impedância dos DD na presença de espécies químicas, pinças e ponta de prova de microscópio, base para baterias de lítio, nanoguias de ondas, entre outras.
A proposta deste trabalho se baseia em investigar as mudanças de comportamento de funcionamento desta classe de antenas DD puras e dopadas na presença de campo elétrico externo. Para isso, são modificadas as regiões terminais que está associado com os parâmetros que definem o DD. Nesse trabalho, será mostrado a estrutura eletrônica de DD puro e dopado na presença de campo elétrico externo utilizando as aproximações derivadas do método de Hartree-Fock. Nesse método, o DD é obtido da estrutura do precursor otimizada por método de mecânica molecular. A investigação de DD tem como objetivo calcular sua estrutura eletrônica via Hartree-Fock semiempíricos (AM1) e Zindo/S-CI) e ab initio quando convenientes para pequenos oligômeros. Isto é importante para o conhecimento e análise de quais propriedades estruturais estão relacionadas com o mecanismo de transporte eletrônico molecular.
A análise empírica de Millikan-Laurtisen (ML) e Fowler-Nordheim (FN) também é apresentada para o melhor detalhamento do transporte eletrônico, com o objetivo de demonstração da assinatura eleltrônica de DD para utilização de nano-antenas de dendrímeros.<br>Structures named derivatives dendrimers (DD) have fascinating electronics proprieties. From the technological point of view, they are completely different from those ones obtained only by their basics constituents and with discrete states of conductivity, which emerges from the points of Fermi's surroundings. One preponderant factor of the engineering of the DD is its dimensionality. Experiments using molecular spectroscopy (Raman) and high resolution microscopy (TEM, AFM and STM) confirmed the nature n-D of their electrons. They concluded that the dimensionality of one DD has a deep influence on its physics properties.
This peculiar characteristic of electronics properties adjusts according to the geometry, along with the reduced dimensions, created a huge technological race, aiming to develop electronic devices (diodes, transistors, logical doors, displays,…) from DD. Some interesting applications refers to the usage of the DD as: antennas, by the DD’s impedance properties modifications in the presence of chemical species, clamps and the microscope probe, basis for lithium batteries, waves of nanoguides, and others.
The study’s proposal is based on investigate the behavior’s changes of function of this classes of antennas DD pure and doped, in the presence of an extern electric field. For that, the terminals regions, which are associated with the parameters the defined the DD, will be modified.In this study, will be shown the DD’s electronics structures pure and doped, in the presence of an extern electric field, using the derived approaches from Hartree-Fork’s method. Therefore, using this method, the DD is obtained from the precursor structure, optimized by the molecular mechanical method.The DD’s investigation aims to calculate its electronic structure via Hartree-Fock semi empirical (AM1 and Zinco/S-CI) and ab initio, when convenient for little oligomers. This is important for the knowledge and analysis of which structural properties are related with the molecular electronic transport’s mechanism.
The empirical analysis of Millikan-Laurtisen (ML) and Fowler-Nordheim (FN), it's also presented for better detailing of the electronic transport , in order to demonstrate the DD’s electronic signature, for the usage in dendrimers antennas.

Includes abstract.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>To determine the most common indication for foetal MRI, and to correlate ante-natal MRI with ante-natal ultrasound, post-natal imaging and post mortem findings. This was a retrospective study of imaging between January 2006 and December 2011. Seventy foetal MRI cases with complete medical records (antenatal and postnatal) were included in the study. Antenatal ultrasound and antenatal MR imaging was compared and also compared with the postnatal imaging findings. Stata 12 was used to analyse the Data. Spearman’s test was used to test the agreement between the results. Intracranial pathology was the most common indication for foetal MRI, with ventriculomegaly being the commonest indication determined from prenatal ultrasound. There was 72% agreement between antenatal ultrasound and foetal MRI. Post-natal findings showed 28% agreement with antenatal ultrasound and 39% agreement with foetal MRI. Intracranial pathology was the major indication for foetal MRI. The study found good agreement between prenatal ultrasound and foetal MRI but poor agreement between antenatal and postnatal findings.

Memoria para optar al título de Ingeniero Civil Eléctrico<br>En los últimos años ha existido un justificado interés en el desarrollo y aplicaciones de los
metamateriales. Estos consisten en estructuras o materiales compuestos que pueden imitar
respuestas de materiales conocidos o exhibir propiedades que no están disponibles en la
naturaleza. Ser capaz modificar las propiedades de los metamateriales permite controlar su
comportamiento a nivel electromagnético. En el diseño de antenas esto significa contar con
herramientas adicionales para mejorar el desempeño, reducir el tamaño y abrir nuevas áreas
de investigación.
En esta memoria se muestra el diseño, fabricación y caracterización de arreglos ante-
nas microstrip utilizando una superficie selectiva de frecuencia como elemento radiador, y
acoplamiento por apertura como técnica de alimentación. El objetivo del presente trabajo es
explorar el desempeño de un arreglo de antenas . Este diseño considera excitar cada antena
del arreglo por separado y así tener aplicaciones con el sintetizador de haces en la banda 5.8
GHz ISM que posee el Laboratorio de Ondas Milimétricas.
Se construyeron tres prototipos de arreglos. El prototipo final cuenta con 16 elementos
distribuidos en un sustrato de dimensiones 129 x 129 mm y su desempeño se mide con las
siguientes figuras de mérito.
Ancho de banda fraccional medido varía entre 11,3% hasta 47.5% para los elementos
del arreglo, con un promedio de 27,2%.
Su beamwidth es de 23.5° a 5,81 GHz
Lóbulos laterales en simulación tienen 15 dB menos que al haz principal.
La Eficiencia de radiación simulada es de 80,57% en sustrato FR4 y 95,74% en sustrato

Mestrado em Engenharia Electrónica e Telecomunicações<br>Dadas as suas características, a utilização das antenas microstrip tem
aumentado nos sistemas de comunicações sem fio, em diferentes projectos.
A sua simplicidade aliada ao baixo custo permitem desenvolver quer
antenas quer agregados de antenas com elevada qualidade e eficiência,
que podem ser usadas nas mais diversas aplicações do dia-a-dia. Uma das
aplicações possíveis das antenas microstrip são as comunicações dedicadas
de curto alcance (DSRC) muito usadas no controlo de veículos nas estradas.
No âmbito desta temática, foi projectada, simulada, construída e medida
uma antena com características que respeitam a norma europeia para as
comunicações DSRC. A antena desenvolvida é um agregado planar cujo
diagrama de radiação se adequa ás comunicações rodoviárias e possui
polarização circular imposta pela norma.
Uma tecnologia que tem crescido nos últimos tempos no âmbito das
antenas de forma a potenciar o seu desempenho são o uso de estruturas
EBG (Electromagnetic Band Gap) em redor das antenas de forma a
eliminar as não desejadas ondas superficiais.
Posteriormente foi estudado o impacto do uso de estruturas EBG na
antena dimensionada, com o objectivo de melhorar o desempenho global
desta. Foram adicionadas estruturas EBG em redor da antena, e analisado
impacto destas nas características de radiação da antena.<br>Given its characteristics, the use of microstrip antennas has increased
in wireless communications systems, in di erent projects. Its simplicity
coupled with the low cost allow to develop antennas or arrays of antennas
with high quality and e ciency, that can be used in diverse applications
in day-to-day. One of the possible applications of microstrip antennas
is the dedicated short range communications (DSRC) widely used to
communicate with vehicles on the roads.
Under this theme an antenna, was designed, simulated, built and measured
with features that meet the European standard for DSRC communications.
The developed antenna is a planar array whose radiation pattern and
circular polarization ts the european standard.
A technology that has grown, in recent times, in the antennas, to maximize
their performance are the EBG structures (Electromagnetic Band Gap)
around the radiating elements to eliminate the unwanted surface waves.
Subsequently the impact of using EBG structures in the antenna proposed,
as been studied in order to improve its overall performance. Some EBG
structures were added around the antenna, and their impact analysed on
the antenna radiation characteristics.

This thesis explores the relationship between antenatal education and the transition to motherhood, focusing on the pre-natal expectations and postnatal experiences of a small sample of first-time mothers in Plymouth. The aims of the study were 1) to investigate the style and content of statutory and voluntary sector antenatal classes in the Plymouth area. 2) To investigate factors affecting non-attendance, including non-attenders' perceptions of them. 3) To examine the role of lay systems of knowledge and support in the transition to motherhood and 4) to investigate the differential impact of different patterns of knowledge and support on the experiences of new parents, with particular attention to the three key areas of maternal wellbeing, parenting skills and parental relationships. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used to obtain relevant data. The findings suggested that antenatal classes in both sectors focused mainly on labour and birth. Coverage of infant care skills and other important postnatal issues like parental relationships and maternal wellbeing were virtually non-existent. The style of antenatal classes was perceived as overly-prescriptive and directive. Information about labour and birth often duplicated what women already knew. The greatest benefit of attending classes was social, rather than informational. Many women found the classes did not provide them with realistic expectations of new motherhood. Non-attenders were found not to be disadvantaged by not attending classes, despite the common concerns of health professionals. Instead, they drew extensively on lay information and support. In light of these fmdings, it is argued that formal antenatal classes should have a broader curriculum that is also realistic. This study is implicitly critical of the biomedical framework in which maternity services are couched. It contributes to the field by broadening the definition of antenatal education to include informal and lay sources, engaging with users' (rather than just providers') views, to help evaluate antenatal education services. Importantly, it does this by evaluating them in the context of new motherhood.

The study aimedat identifying factors associated with late initiation of antenatal care. Methods: Cross sectional survey data collected for a FAS prevention programme in rural and urban South Africa were used. The primary study made use of face-to-face interviews with female participants the age range of 18 to 44 years. The dependent variable, gestational age, was categorized into a binary variable across 4 months gestational age. Independent variables consisted of scales and categorical variables (mostly binary) within the following domains: (a) socio-demographic factors; (b) characteristics of index pregnancy including substance use information; (c) psychosocial factors; (d) community factors; and (e) partner characteristics.

Alcançar altas taxas de dados em comunicações sem fio é difícil. Altas taxas de dados para redes locais sem fio tornou-se comercialmente um sucesso por volta do ano de 2000. Redes de longa distância sem fio ainda são projetados e utilizados principalmente para serviços de voz em baixas taxas. Apesar de muitas tecnologias promissoras, a realidade de uma rede de área ampla que atenda muitos usuários com altas taxas de dados e largura de banda e consumo de energia razoáveis, além de uma boa cobertura e qualidade no serviço ainda é um desafio. O objetivo do IEEE 802.16 é projetar um sistema de comunicação sem fio para obter uma internet de banda larga para usuários móveis em uma área metropolitana. É importante perceber que o sistema WIMAX tem que enfrentar desafios semelhantes aos existentes sistemas celulares e seu desempenho eventual será delimitado pelas mesmas leis da física e da teoria da informação. Em muitas áreas da engenharia elétrica, tem-se direcionado atenção à miniaturização de componentes e equipamentos. Em particular, antenas não são exceções. Desde que Wheeler iniciou estudos sobre os limites fundamentais de miniaturização de antenas, o assunto tem sido discutido por muitos estudiosos e várias contribuições nesse sentido foram feitas desde então. Os avanços das últimas décadas na área de microeletrônica permitiram a miniaturização dos demais componentes empregados no desenvolvimento de equipamentos eletrônicos e disponibilizaram o uso de aparelhos compactos, leves e com diversas funcionalidades e aplicações comerciais. No entanto, ainda que a integração de circuitos seja uma realidade, a integração completa de um sistema de comunicação sem fio, incluindo a antena, é ainda um dos grandes desafios tecnológicos. No caso de antenas impressas procura-se continuamente desenvolver antenas que, além de compactas, apresentem maior largura de banda, ou operação em múltiplas bandas dada sua inerente característica de banda estreita em projetos convencionais. Neste trabalho, o foco está na miniaturização de antenas impressas através da aplicação de fractais. São apresentadas comparações entre antenas fractais quadradas de Minkowski e fractais triangulares de Koch. Inicialmente, antenas 6 impressas com geometrias convencionais quadradas e triangulares foram projetadas para ter a mesma frequência de ressonância. Depois disso, as estruturas fractais de Minkowski Island e Koch Loop foram implementadas nas antenas quadrada e triangular, respectivamente, até a terceira iteração. As frequências escolhidas foram as de 2,4 GHz, 3,5 GHz, 5,0 GHz e 5,8 GHz. Diversos protótipos foram construídos em dois substratos de permissividade diferentes, o FR-4 e o DUROID 5870. Para validar os resultados foram construídas antenas na frequência de 3,5 GHz para as geometrias quadrada e triangular e suas iterações fractais. A contribuição deste trabalho está na análise sobre as vantagens e desvantagens de cada uma das estruturas propostas. Dependendo dos requisitos de um projeto, a opção pode ser por antenas miniaturizadas com maior largura de banda, como normalmente acontece em alguns projetos comerciais. Entretanto, o interesse por bandas estreitas muitas vezes pode ser um requisito, principalmente para emprego militar, onde por vezes a máxima discrição na transmissão é uma exigência. Além disso, também foi feita uma análise sobre as geometrias que atingiram maior miniaturização.<br>Achieving high data rates in wireless communication is difficult. High data rates for wireless local area networks became commercially successful only around 2000. Wide area wireless networks are still designed and used primarily for low rate voice services. Despite many promising technologies, the reality of a wide area network that services many users at high data rates with reasonable bandwidth and power consumption, while maintaining high coverage and quality of service has not been achieved. The goal of the IEEE 802.16 was to design a wireless communication system processing to achieve a broadband internet for mobile users over a wide or metropolitan area. It is important to realize that WIMAX system have to confront similar challenges as existing cellular systems and their eventual performance will be bounded by the same laws of physics and information theory. In many areas of electrical engineering, miniaturization has been an important issue. Antennas are not an exception. After Wheeler initiated studies on the fundamental limits for miniaturization of antennas, this subject has been extensively discussed by several scholars and many contributions have been made. The advances of recent decades in the field of microelectronics enabled the miniaturization of components and provided the use of compact, lightweight, equipments with many features in commercial applications. Although circuit integration is a reality, the integration of a complete system, including its antenna, is still one of the major technological challenges. In the case of patch antennas, the search is for compact structures with increased bandwidth, due to the inherent narrowband characteristic of this type of antenna. In this work the focus is on a comparison between the Minkowski and the Koch Fractal Patch Antennas. Initially, patch antennas with conventional square and triangular geometries were simulated to present the same resonance frequency. After that, fractal Minkowski and Koch Island Loop antennas were implemented in the square and triangular geometries, respectively, to the third iteration. A comparison was made for two substrates of different permittivities FR-4 and DUROID 5870 at the frequencies of 2,4 GHz; 3,5 GHz; 5,0 GHz and 5,8 GHz. 8 Prototype antennas were built using FR-4 and DUROID 5870 to resonate at a frequency of 3,5 GHz to validate simulation results. The contribution of this work is the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each proposed fractal structure. According to the project requirements, the best option can be use a miniaturized antenna with a wider band, as in commercial projects. Particularly in military applications, a narrow band antenna can be a requirement, as sometimes maximum discretion in transmission is a paramount. An additional analysis was performed to verify which of the geometries fulfilled the miniaturization criteria of Hansen.

Inicialmente, usa-se um conjunto de antenas dipolos ideais a fim de gerar essas polarizações e também permitir o controle do campo. Demonstra-se a existência de polarização tridimensional num ponto no interior do volume do conjunto e à medida que se afasta deste ponto, a figura formada pelo campo elétrico sofre uma degradação até se aproximar de uma polarização unidimensional (linear) ou bidimensional (circular ou elíptica). Demonstra-se também que antenas reais podem gerar polarizações tridimensionais e, para tal, utilizam-se antenas cornetas piramidais. Apresenta-se um novo método de projeto ótimo com estas antenas a fim de garantir uma maior estabilidade do ganho em relação às variações de suas dimensões de abertura. Além disso, apresentam-se polarizações ortogonais em três dimensões e mostra-se que o conjunto de antenas para geração de polarização tridimensional pode ser usado para controlar tais polarizações a fim de manter a isolação entre sistemas. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT<br>This work introduces and investigates the concept of three-dimensional polarizations, where the electric field intensity vector can be oriented in any direction in space. Initially, an ideal dipole antenna array is employed in order to generate these polarizations and also control the electric field. It is demonstrated the existence of three-dimensional polarization at a point inside the volume of the array and, as the observation point is moved away, the figure formed by the electric field degrades until it is similar to a one-dimensional (linear) or two-dimensional polarization (circular or elliptical). It is also demonstrated that real antennas can generate three-dimensional polarizations, and for this pyramidal horn antennas are used. It is presented a new method for optimum design of these antennas in order to ensure greater gain stability with respect to variations of the aperture dimensions. Also, orthogonal polarizations are presented in three dimensions and it is showed that the antennas array used for generation of three-dimensional polarization can be used to control such polarizations in order to maintain isolation between systems.

This work presents an analysis of cavity-backed cylindrical wraparound antennas. The cavity is filled by a dielectric, called substrate, and is built within an infinite cylindrical conductor. The effects of the cavity on the radiation pattern and input impedance are presented. The analysis is based on equivalence principle and method of moments. The equivalence principle allows the problem to be split into 2 regions, inside and outside the cavity, connected by an equivalent surface magnetic current distribution. The magnetic current is expanded in a set of basis functions, with coefficients that are determined from integral equations that follow from the boundary conditions. The knowledge of the currentdistribution allows the calculation of radiation fields, and the input impedance, from the fields inside the cavity. Results are presented and compared to those for a cylindrical microstrip antenna, and to those from using cavity method, also presented.<br>O presente trabalho é dedicado ao estudo de antenas de microfita anulares cilíndricas montadas sobre uma cavidade formada por paredes metálicas e preenchida por um material dielétrico. Esta camada dielétrica recebe o nome de substrato. A cavidade está localizada em um cilindro condutor el´etrico perfeito que se extende ao infinito. O objetivoprincipal deste trabalho é analisar os efeitos da cavidade sobre as características de diagrama de radiação da e impedância de entrada da antena. Para a análise das características da antena serão determinados os campos eletromagnéticos internos à cavidade. Utilizando o teorema da equivalencia será formulada uma distribuição de corrente magnética sobre a interface dielétrica na forma de funçõesde base, onde uma série de coeficientes fazem parte da equação. Os coeficientes serão determinados com a utilização da técnica numérica do método dos momentos. Determinados os coeficientes, é possível definir a distribuição das correntes magnéticas na interface dielétrica. Elas são consideradas as fontes geradoras dos campos externos à cavidade. Conhecidas as correntes magnéticas na interface dielétrica, serão determinados os campos eletromagnéticos irradiados pela antena e a impedância de entrada. Resultados de diagrama de radiação e impedância de entrada serão apresentados a fim de se observar os efeitos da cavidade sobre tais características. Estes resultados serãocomparados à outros obtidos por antenas de microfita anulares cilíndricas.

Background Major Depressive Disorder is a leading cause of disease burden for women of childbearing age. The prevalence of perinatal depression is significantly higher in women from low and middle income countries than from high income countries. Antenatal depression is associated with low birth weight and preterm delivery. There is also evidence that depression during pregnancy can alter the development of a woman's fetus and her child, with an increased risk for child emotional and behavioral problems. Detection of perinatal depression in primary health care (PHC) is very low. This research gathered evidence on the current practice of detection of pregnant women with moderate-severe depression in the Sodo district and explored potential solutions to the identified challenges. Methods A qualitative study was conducted in four health centres and a primary hospital, located in the Sodo district, Ethiopia. In-depth interviews were carried out with pregnant women diagnosed to have depression. Focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with antenatal care (ANC) PHC workers. A framework approach to qualitative data analysis was used. OpenCode computer software was used for data handling during the analysis. Results Nine pregnant women were interviewed in-depth and twelve ANC PHC workers participated in two FGDs. Identified themes were categorized under client, provider and system level barriers, and illness related influences. Women's reluctance to disclose symptoms and seek help and not thinking what they had was an illness and/or not thinking they would get help from ANC clinic were client-side barriers to identifying depression. ANC PHC workers not asking about depressive symptoms, their reluctance to disclose a diagnosis of depression to the affected women and not thinking women with mental health problems are in their clinics were the main provider level barriers. The setting not being conducive for depression assessment, inadequate mental health training and ANC assessment format not having a place for recording mental health assessment were system level barriers raised. Difficulty in differentiating clinical depression from normal emotional reaction emerged as the main illness related influence. ANC PHC workers proposed community awareness-raising, improving communication between women and PHC workers and making mental health assessment part of the routine ANC service, among others, as possible solutions to improve detection of antenatal depression in ANC clinics. Conclusion Multiple client, provider and system level barriers to detection of depression in pregnant women in ANC clinics were identified in the current study. The identified barriers call for interventions at different levels; awareness raising at a community level, training on communicating about emotional concerns and mental health care at a provider level and enabling the health care system to support integration of mental health care into maternal health services at a higher level. Follow-up studies are required to better understand the experiences of women and providers, to quantify the magnitude of the problem and to develop and evaluate contextually appropriate interventions to improve detection of depression in pregnant women.

Master of Public Health - MPH<br>Globally, the maternal mortality rate (MMR) dropped by 44%, from 342 deaths per 100 000 to 211 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 2017. Developing countries have reached two-thirds coverage (69 %) of the recommended focused visits and first ANC. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, approximately 66% (201,000) of deaths occur during birth. MMR can be reduced if pregnant women initiate ANC early enough and receive quality care. In Swaziland, only 14% of pregnant women make their first ANC visit during the first trimester, 64% during the 2nd trimester and 22% during the 3rd trimester. The study aimed to explore pregnant women's perceptions of the factors contributing to late ANC booking in the Shiselweni Region.

Antenatal care (ANC) has been recognised as a way to improve health outcomes for pregnant women and their babies. Only 29% of pregnant women receive the recommended four antenatal visits in Nepal and reasons for such low utilisation of ANC are poorly understood. The main aim of this thesis is to explore opportunities and barriers in ANC uptake and the family’s role in decision-making in Nepal. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 purposively selected prenatal or postnatal mothers (half users, half non-users of ANC), 10 husbands and 10 mothers-in-law in two communities (one semi-urban, one rural). There is no single factor that determines the use of ANC in the study area. Use of ANC is influenced by cultural norms and values. Culturally women have low status in the household and this contributes to the low uptake of ANC. Heavy workloads (inside and outside the home) are expected of all young women and challenge ANC uptake in rural areas. The findings suggest that husbands and mothers-in-law have a strong influence in the use of ANC. Mostly the mothers-in-law are pivotal family members who make decisions about ANC for their daughters-in-law. Educated husbands are reported to be positive towards ANC. Husbands’ lack of support in ANC is mostly related to alcoholic habit. Education had a positive effect on ANC uptake due to improved knowledge of its function. Perceptions regarding the need for ANC are shaped by previous experiences and severity of the condition of pregnancy. Some women did not go for ANC as pregnancy was seen as a normal condition. Similarly, perceived quality of care such as satisfaction towards the services, privacy and confidentiality, communication skills of the health worker are highlighted as important issues in ANC uptake. Factors related to affordability of care such as poverty and cost of the services are discouraging to some, especially poor families. Similarly, availability and accessibility of the services were highlighted as important issues in ANC uptake. Comprehensive health promotion and educational interventions could be positive actions but should target both women and their family members, particularly mothers-in-law and husbands.

Approximately 29.1% of South African women of childbearing age tested HIV positive during their first antenatal visit in 2006 (DoH, 2007). This rate of HIV amongst the women of childbearing age reinforces the importance of understanding the management of HIV during pregnancy. During antenatal visits the general health of the woman and her unborn baby is assessed and managed. Management includes antiretroviral therapy to the HIV infected women with a CD4 count below 200 cells/mm3, while women with a CD4 count above 200 cells/mm3 receive a single dose of nevirapine with the onset of labour provided to them by their local clinics. Currently, in Potchefstroom, women receive antenatal care at local primary health-care clinics and antiretroviral drugs at the antiretroviral clinic. There is little or no collaboration between the various clinics and the question arises if the needs of the women are being met.
The aim of the research was to promote the health of HIV positive pregnant women by providing insight into the needs of these women and to formulate recommendations for antenatal care. The specific objective is to explore and describe the needs of HIV positive pregnant women regarding antenatal care.
An explorative, descriptive, contextual design, following a qualitative approach was used during the research. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Interview questions were compiled from the research problems. Before the commencement of data collection, permission was obtained from the district health manager and Potchefstroom Hospital. A total of sixteen (16) HIV positive women were interviewed after informed consent had been obtained. Data analysis was done after each session and themes were categorised according to the women's needs.
From the interviews it was found that each woman has her own specific needs regarding antenatal care. The needs of the participants followed a similar pattern and for this reason it could be divided into various categories. These categories
include a need for support, a need for education, a need for improved services and a need for a non-judgemental environment. The physiological changes of pregnancy alter the pharmacokinetics of low molecular weight heparins (LMWH). The optimal dosing strategy of LMWH for the treatment of antenatal venous thromboembolism (VTE) is not known and this has led to significant variation in prescribing practice when women are managed for antenatal VTE with LMWH. The aim of this thesis is to describe the pharmacokinetics of enoxaparin during pregnancy using the method of population pharmacokinetic (PK) modelling. In addition, pregnant women’s thrombin generation and D-dimers are measured and described and their views and adherence to enoxaparin are explored. Pregnant women prescribed enoxaparin at King’s College Hospital were eligible for recruitment. Subjects (n=123) had up to 3 anti-Xa activities drawn per clinic visit (monthly), contributing 795 anti-Xa activities for PK modelling purposes. A one compartment model, with a combined error model, produced a robust enoxaparin antenatal PK model, with weight, baseline lean body weight and gestation found to be significant covariates on enoxaparin antenatal PK. Simulations from the final PK model revealed that a once daily dose of enoxaparin is appropriate in this setting. D-dimer concentrations were found to increase in line with gestation (r=0.382). Thrombin generation was also increased during the antenatal period, with enoxaparin found to influence the different thrombin generation parameters in a dose-dependent manner. Findings from the adherence aspect of this study revealed that women were highly adherent to enoxaparin antentally (mean 97.92%) and demonstrates that women are prepared to inject themselves with a parenteral medication, if they feel it is protecting theirs and their unborn baby’s health; this belief does impact on adherence to LMWH during the postnatal period, where in some women adherence drops (mean 92.75%). This study describes the pharmacokinetic profile of enoxaparin during pregnancy and provides compelling evidence for enoxaparin once daily dosing for managing antenatal VTE.
