Texte intégralThe Risālat al-Tuffāḥa, also known under the Latin title of Liber de Pomo, is a dialogue inspired by Plato's Phaedo, which features a dying Aristotle who manages to stay alive by smelling the scent of an apple. The philosopher answers his disciples' questions, as they are eager to learn the ultimate meaning of his teaching. He urges them to not fear death and to choose philosophy, the only path that leads to salvation. Nowadays forgotten, this text was however amongst the most popular works during the Middle Age. Famous in its Arabic version as early as the tenth century, it was then translated into Persian, Hebrew and Latin. It played a major role in the building of the medieval image of the philosopher. Its origin is however rather obscure: giving the settings that it presents, it has been suggested that this might be the translation of an ancient Greek work. Despite this hypothesis, the starting point of every research about the origin of this text still has to be the study of the Arabic version, as it is the text that has been used for the later translations. But this had, until now, never been thoroughly studied. Hence this work, that contains a critical edition of the Arabic text, a translation in French and a study that attempts to answer the question of the origins of this work and explores its rich Arabo-Persian reception

Texte intégralThe zodiac has been known since ancient times but it was the Greek astronomers of the Hellenistic period who determined forms after the mythological figures and animals. The zodiac iconography inherited by the 8th and 9th century arabic-persian astronomers was largely inspired by ancient traditions. They subsequently updated it. Indeed, the iconography of the zodiac constellations had its codifier: the astronomer Abd al-rahman al-suff, then in the service of the buyid prince Adud al-dawla, who wrote “the book of the fixed stars”. The purpose of this iconography was mainly didactic, allowing constellations in the sky to be identified, hence a number of features characterizing the figures in all the copies made until the 19th century. A second type of zodiac appeared in the manuscripts starting in the 13th century: the astrological zodiac, which had a radically different purpose. The astrological zodiac was then used by astrologers to elaborate horoscopes but was often found in late 12th century east Anatolia or Persian metallic objects. Like the manuscripts as of the 14th century, these objects offer two types of iconography: - the first shows the signs conjugated with the planets in their various forms of associations, the most frequent being the planet associated to its house sign. - the second, frequently seen in miniatures starting in the 14th century, offers a new zodiac, purged so to speak, in which only some of the signs are perfectly associated to their planet: these are mixed series. We have underlined the major role of a focal point from which, we believe, a good part of the arabic-persian astrological zodiac may have originated: the city of Harran, in east turkey, whose inhabitants worshiped stars until the 9th century. The practice of the cult survived until the city was destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century. It was at this time that this so distinctive iconography of the planets and the zodiac started appearing and spreading. The zodiac is not restricted to the two areas of astronomy and astrology. It also extends to other forms, among which the pictorial and mystical conception of heavens symbolized by the bearers of the divine throne. Texte intégralOur thesis consists in two volumes ; the first one deals with the iconographic study and the analysis of text/image relationships in the arabic hippiatric manuscripts Khalīl Āghā 8 and Fatīh 3608/3609. The first one entitled kitāb al-baïtara of Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Ahnaf is stored at Dār al-kutub in Cairo and is dated of 1209. The second one of the same title as the first one is neither signed nor dated. It is kept in the Libary of the Süleymaniye in Istanbul. We have attempted to study these two manuscripts, so richly decorated, to discover what are the characteristics that link them together and what aspects separate them and also whether they are from the same author or not. In the second volume of this thesis, we transcribed the copy of the Cairo manuscript on computer to make it more readable and we have then translated it to French in order to make it accessible to non-Arabic researchers

Texte intégralAl-Asbāb wa-l-ʿalāmāt "The causes and symptoms" by Nağīb al-Dīn al-Samarqandī (d.619 / 1222), is a medical treatise which made its author famous. However despite the fact that in 1935 it was acclaimed by science historian Max Meyerhof as a book that "should be published", it never made it to print. This work, the object of this thesis, is a critical edition of a complete version of the treatise.The redaction of this vade mecum was based by the author on three sources, particularly the "Canon" of Avicenna. He therefore respected the medical tradition of the time, which classified diseases on the one hand by pathologies specific to each organ of the body, and on the other hand by non-specific conditions (which we could qualify as general) affecting the entire body such as fevers. He also examined cosmetology and poisons, skin diseases, wounds, fractures and dislocations in a spirit of completeness. For every disease described, the author included its associated symptoms, advocatingtreatments based on simple or compound remedies.We edited the Arabic text while strictly observing the spelling and grammar of the original manuscript.This book, rich in technical terms specific to the field of anatomy and pathology, has allowed us to establish several glossaries that represent the first detailed classification of medieval Arabic medical vocabulary in French.Our aim, in this text edition, is to contribute to enrich the corpus of medical texts and in particular that of the thirteenth century and to counter the accepted ideas claiming that this era was a historical period of decline, if not the beginning of a cultural and scientific sclerosis in the Arab world

Texte intégralThe Šarafnāma is a book written in Persian by Šaraf Xān Bidlīsī (949-1009/1543-1600), Kurdish governor of the principality of Bidlīs, in about 1005/1596-1597. It is a chronicle of Kurdish dynasties and tribes, starting with the Marwānid dynasty, at the end of the 4th/10th century, and concluding with the events of the year 1005/1596-1597 and the story of the Diyādīnids of Bidlīs, the author’s own household. The chronicle is composed of an introduction (muqaddima) and four ṣaḥīfas (books). The author has also added an epilogue (xātima), which is an annalistic history of the Ottomans and the Safavids. There are around forty extant manuscripts of the Šarafnāma. Our first task has been to identify and physically or digitally consult these manuscripts, in order to compare them and produce a stemma codicum of the book’s copies. Once this was done, we have focused our research on the manuscripts copied during the author’s lifetime, in the years 1005-1007/1596-1599, as well as on the copies made in the 11th/17th century, immediately following the book’s composition. The first part of our work is a general study of Šaraf Xān’s historiographical outlook. In the second part, we have studied the three manuscripts transcribed by the author or under his supervision, in order to highlight the thought out and collaborative nature of the book’s composition. In the third part, we have focused on the dozen manuscripts produced in the 11th/17th century in Bidlīs, Kilīs, Aleppo and the Ardalān region, and on the processes of reappropriation and reinterpration of the original work manifest in these copies

Nowadays, a real awareness rises throughout the world to preserve the old manuscripts.Many digitization projects of old Arabic manuscripts were implemented. But, is this sufficient for the manuscripts preservation? The main goal is the massive diffusion of these resources, because nothing is better preserved than a shared resource. However, it is necessary to make them accessible.Libraries are the most suitable places for storing manuscripts. They have developed an interesting tool for the manuscripts online access: It is about a catalogue, a simple and intuitive user support.the whole of the manuscripts are listed throughout a non-standardized cataloging protocol, which differ from an institution to another, but most of them use standard entries like the "Author", "title" and "subject".The problematic is about finding a way how to help a cataloguer who struggle alone to catalog the manuscripts, which present several problems concerning their state and their calligraphy? Therefore, the answer will be about how to make it.Thus, first we are asked to find a best way to access images of the digitized Arabic manuscripts. Indeed, we can quote three methods to access digitized manuscripts:• The first one consists of accessing to manuscripts in image mode. This is done by images processing with using of suitable indexing tools.• The second one aim to fully convert the manuscript into a text mode, then the manuscript will be processed as textual document. Thus, the information retrieval will be used.• The third solution uses an effective library tool which is the catalogue. The principle of this solution is basic. First, the user makes his query to the catalogue. The latter displays the results, and then the user selects the suitable one.The goal of our research is not to make choice between these three methods to access to digitized manuscripts. Our objective is to use these methods, evaluate them in order to optimize the online access to digitized Arabic manuscripts

Texte intégralThis thesis presents the editing and philological study of the codex 122 of the Archive of the Kingdom of Majorca (ARM). The manuscript is a book of accounts or pinqás written by a Jewish Majorcan moneylender in the second half of the fourteenth century. This is the personal record of this Jew where noted loans made mostly to Christians although there are also loans to Jews and Moors. It consists of 137 folios including 180 pages contain some annotation. The language of the manuscript is Judaeo-Arabic although place names, anthroponyms, months of the year, the measures and some Christian festivals are in Catalan and lexicon in Hebrew. The dates registered correspond to the Gregorian calendar and the loans are recorded between 1360 and 1391. In regard to paleography writing is the Sephardic Cursive script and there are additions of two more scribes. The thesis is divided into two main sections. The first section includes: a) the study of the manuscript including a codicological and paleographic description, b) a linguistic study of the three languages that appear (Hebrew, Catalan, and Judaeo-Arabic), c) a content analysis that includes the publication and study of some warranty documents of loans, d) a section on metrology and e) a study of onomastics. The second section contains the facsimile edition of the manuscript, a paleographic transcription, the name indexes and bibliography. Published here are some warranty documents of loans in Judaeo-Arabic that are contracts of obligation or "command" of 4 loans registered in the codex. The lender is the author of the manuscript itself, the Jewish Magalluf Milli. In the codex are registered loans made under the supervision of 31 Christian notaries although many are made in obligation to the Veguer of the Court, the Governor or in obligation to the city in wich they are made. Lenders are 3, Magalluf Milli, Rabbi Seadiah Milli and a woman named Khavah. Loans are made in 28 villages of Mallorca. In the comparative study of the loans it follows that more than 75% were made in the City of Mallorca. From the annotations is also clear that the interest was variable and ranged between 10 and 20%. The codex presents a rich onomastic resource, greatly expanding our knowledge of anthroponomy of the era. The thesis adds this source to the index available from previously documented material. A total of 768 Christians, 19 Muslims and 81 Jews make up a list displayed in the index of names.

Texte intégralAzerbaijani language, like all living languages, does not escape the linguistic exchanges. The modern Azerbaijani also demonstrate its ability to adapt to social, economic, political, technological or scientific. To serve effectively in communicating in specific contexts and styling with precision the new realities, it creates but also borrows new lexical units. Borrowing the words of French origin in the Azerbaijani vocabulary is an ongoing process since it is still ongoing and is becoming more common in the age of globalization. This thesis explores the background in the French lexicon Azerbaijani while insisting on possible adaptations, modifications or assimilation : semantic, grammatical, graphic, phonological. Half of those words that settle in the language, enrich and simply become necessary for speech are part of everyday life. This is thanks to the survey of users of the Azerbaijani language we can see various aspects of the use of these words travelers

Texte intégralThe aim of this thesis is to bring to light the unknown figure of Ahmad al-Rabbât al-Halabî, a Syrian bookseller, who lived between the second half of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, to catalog and present his manuscripts and to investigate the users « readers » of this cultural archive: it can provide concrete answers to questions raised in the Arabic literature, the creation and circulation of texts. The research led to identify about 240 volumes, scattered around the world, from the initial library of al-Rabbât. The margins of these manuscripts contain a large number of reading certificates written by many generations of readers.The work on the manuscript sources also presented an opportunity to create a database of the copyists, the owners and the readers of manuscripts, and to determine the role played by Western travelers and consular agents in the production and the history of the manuscripts

Texte intégralThis PhD Dissertation presents the edition and global study of six pilgrimage certificates to the holy places of Mecca and Medina, dated between the 15th and 16th centuries. The particularity of this documentary typology lies in the fact that they attest delegated pilgrimages, whose legal origin is analyzed in this work. In this sense, this Dissertation differs in perspective from the devotional approach commonly used to study previously described certificates, and propose that the role played by these documents would be related to the Islamic jurisprudence on inheritance law. The comparative analysis, on the other hand, allows us to offer a general overview of the evolution of this typology from three different perspectives: materiality, textuality, and iconography. The main aim of this work is shed light on our knowledge of this kind of documents, explore the reasons for their emergence and implement the methodology of editing and studying unpublished manuscripts according to the criteria proposed by Papyrology.

Texte intégralIn a number of didactic and sapiential works of the Middle Ages, the animal is used as a representation of the prince and his entourage. The animal is sometimes a filter, sometimes a mask, looking at the princely courts by more or less involved authors. They find in the animal the most expressive tool to expose some values or to denounce some behaviours. Our study is based on a variety of sources, mainly the Calila et Dimna composed in Castile in the middle of the 13th century for the Infante Alfonso (future Alfonso X); the analysis includes a study of the Calila et Dimna textual path: what are the differences between Indian (Panchatantra), Persian, Arabic (Kalila wa Dimna), Hebrew, Castilian and Latin (Jean de Capoue and Raymond de Béziers) versions ? The study is supported by a comparison between some Indian, Persian and Arabic texts offering a thematic relevance in the animal world with this treatise. Latin and French (Roman de Renart, Roman de Fauvel secondarily) texts complete the corpus. We are also wondering about the Greco-Latin antique fable influence on the treatise (Esope, Avianus), concerning the choice of the animals and their characteristics. The modes of transmission to the Occident of other texts that followed parallel ways (Sandbar, Secret des Secrets, Roman des Sept Sages de Rome) are reviewed. We will be wondering whether the Calila et Dimna was not, as le Roman de Renart or le Roman de Fauvel, the caricature of a certain curial milieu that contemporary readers had no difficulty to recognise; Both the Arabic and the Castilian version of the treatise are concerned, on the understanding that each successive translator contextualised this vision of court. We will seek to understand the function and the mechanisms of these animal masks: beyond the complex bestiary, which will be thoroughly analysed, how and to what extent the animal is used as a filter for political criticism, how it constitutes the mirror of a court life, and what are the reflected images of the courtiers ? What animals are chosen (depending on the version) to embody one courtier or another ? Which moral precepts, character traits or symbolic values, each « humanised » animal is transmitting ? Why use animals ? Are they there to amuse princes or to allow the authors to tell more than they could with human heroes ? Is the animal a mask or a mirror ?

Texte intégralUntil recently the Sub-Saharan manuscripts have been inaccessible and thus include many major works in numerous fields. This thesis deals with two such works in the qreq of lexicography and grammar, namly: Iḍā’at al-Uḍmūs wa Riyāḍat al-Nufūs min Isṭilāḥ Ṣāḥib al-Qāmūs d’Aḥmed b. ‘Abd al-‘Azīz b. al-Rashīd al-Sijlmāsi, al-Mālikī (1761), which is also a commentary on the methodology of the book al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ; and al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ ; et de : Shifā’ al-Ṣudūr fī Ḥalli alfāẓ al-Shudhūr de Muḥammad b. ‘Abd al-Mun‘im Schams al-Din al-Jawjarī al-Shāfi’ al-Miṣrī (1484) which is also a commentary, dealing with the famous book of grammar by Ibn Hishām: Shudhūr al-Dhahab.This treatment of these manuscripts involved the making a scientific edition to provide a ready to read text, with the provion of vocalization, punctuation, critical apparatus and typography with the purpose not giving an image of these manuscripts, but to transforming them into a book.This thesis has scrutinized the variations between three copies of the book: Iḍā'at al-Uḍmūs and two copies of the book Shifā’ al-Ṣudūr in order to restore the texts; it has mentioned the errors encounred, traced the sources and made comments to clarify some passages by referring to a varied and plentiful bibliography

Texte intégralDiscoverability or visibility is a challenge that faces all researchers worldwide – with an ever increasing supply of good research entering the scholarly marketplace; this challenge is only becoming intensified as time passes. The global language of scholarly research is English and so the obstacle of getting noticed is magnified manyfold when the article is not written in the English language. Indeed, despite rapid advances in technology, the “tyranny of language” creates a segmentation inhibiting scholarly research and innovation generally. Mass translation of non-English language articles is neither feasible nor desirable. Our paper proposes a strategy for remedying this segmentation – such that, the work of non-English language scholars become more discoverable. The core piece of this strategy is a “reverse-engineering” [RE] application of Faff’s (2015, 2017) “pitching research” template. More specifically, we provide translated versions of the “cued” template across THIRTY THREE different languages: (1) Arabic; (2) Chinese; (3) Dutch; (4) French; (5) Greek; (6) Hindi; (7) Indonesian; (8) Japanese; (9) Korean; (10) Lao; (11) Norwegian; (12) Polish; (13) Portuguese; (14) Romanian; (15) Russian; (16) Sinhalese; (17) Spanish; (18) Tamil; (19) Thai; (20) Urdu; (21) Vietnamese; (22) Myanmar; (23) German; (24) Persian; (25) Bengali; (26) Filipino; (27) Italian; (28) Afrikaans; (29) Khmer (Cambodia); (30) Danish; (31) Finnish; (32) Hebrew; (33) Turkish.
