Résumé :
Ari Folman's Waltz with Bashir is an animated documentary about the 1982 Lebanon War through the eyes of Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) veterans. The narrative, which follows Folman on a quest to uncover his lost memories of the War through interviews with his peers, plays out like psychotherapeutic intervention; Folman questions his own responsibilities, his hereditary scars and, ultimately, his guilt as he ‘unwillingly [takes on] the role of the Nazi’. While it would be disingenuous to call the film apolitical, it is not as political as one might expect from such evocative history. Rather, it is a treatise on memory and psychological survival through predominantly neurotic defence mechanisms.

Ari Folman’s The Congress (2013) borrows freely from Stanisław Lem’s dystopian view in his Sci-fi novel The Futurological Congress (1971) to propose the gradual dissolution of the human into an artificial form, which is animation. By moving the action of the novel from a hypothetical future to contemporary Hollywood, Ari Folman gives CGI animation the role of catalyst for changes not only in the production system, but for human thought and, therefore, for society. This way, the film ponders the changing role of performers at the time of their digitalization, as well as on the progressive dematerialization of the film industry, considering a dystopian future where simulation fatally displaces reality, which invites relating The Congress with Jean Baudrillard’s and Alan Cholodenko’s theses on how animating technologies have resulted in the culture of erasing. Moreover, this article highlights how Lem’s metaphor of the manipulation of information in the Soviet era is transformed in the second part of The Congress into a vision of cinema as a collective addiction, relating it to Alexander Dovzhenko’s and Edgar Morin’s speculative theories of total film – which come close to the potentialities of today’s Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. In addition, although The Congress is a disturbing view of film industry and animating technologies, its vision of film is nostalgically retro as it vindicates an entire tradition of Golden Age animation that transformed the star system into cartoons, suggesting the fictionalization of their lives and establishing a postmodern continuum between animation and film.

Résumé :
The article focuses on pointing out the functions of using animation technique and elements of the science fiction genre in Ari Folman’s The Congress from 2013. The film, which is loosely based on the short story The Futurological Congress by Stanisław Lem, balances on the edge of various genres, using the techniques of both live action film and computer animation. Folman proposes a glamorous, colorful vision of an (anti)utopian future, in which pharmacologically-modified cyborg-people participate in a collective hallucination, which is an alternative reality to the post-apocalyptic real world. The director makes several significant changes to the original, thanks to which he introduces a universal message and asks questions which seem far more relevant in the context of both contemporary culture and the environmental crisis that can no longer be ignored (although the issue of an impending natural disaster was also important in Lem’s works).

Abstract While fiction and non-fiction productions can be used as tools to observe, describe, and analyze the “world-out-there,” within these events-issues centered approaches post-positivists posit films themselves as “cultural artifacts” to be analyzed. This paper proposes a critical analysis of Waltz with Bashir (2008) to be conducted with students in the classroom. This acclaimed animated film by Israeli writer and director Ari Folman depicting the 1982 Lebanon War is a non-obvious but germane example of Said's “Orientalism.” After explaining post-structuralism and post-orientalist stances on subjectivity, power relations, and the political consequences of the narratives we create, we analyze the film by applying an orientalist grid to Waltz with Bashir and raising qualitative questions to foster the student's criticality. We conclude by examining student's reactions to the film and their understanding of “Orientalism.”

In Southeastern Brazil, the city of Ipatinga is inserted in the Steel Valley Metropolitan Region, which is characterized by the predominance of steel industry, and also by the presence of one of the largest vehicle fleets in the country. Developing standardized biomonitoring methods with native plant species may be an economically viable option for assessing air quality across extensive urban areas, which usually cannot be achieved by instrumental monitoring due to cost issues. In this sense, the potential for biomonitoring airborne particles was evaluated in Caesalpinia echinata and C. ferrea aiming to test whether metal accumulation by the plants is related to leaf surface features. Plants were exposed in four urban sites for 90 days. A reference station was installed at Rio Doce State Park, 30 km away from the municipality. After the experimental period, plants were evaluated for trace-metal accumulation. Leaf surface roughness was evaluated in two hierarchical levels, through profilometry and atomic force microsocopy. Epicuticular waxes were characterized chemically through GC-MS and FTIR, and micromorphologically through scanning electron microscopy. Leaf tissue thickness was assessed through optical microscopy. Particle accumulation was higher in C. echinata, and was related to a lower roughness given by the epidermal tissue (macro- roughness), lower roughness given by the epicuticular wax deposition pattern (micro- roughness), the micromorphology of waxes in the form of a layer, and the wax chemical composition. The waxes of this species have lower amounts of hydrocarbons and ethers, conferring them a polar nature. These characteristics presumably render the leaf higher wettability, which is usually associated with decreased self-cleaning effect and a consequent increased particle accumulation. In contrast, C. ferrea showed reduced accumulation of particulate matter (PM), but a more well-defined response gradient across the exposure sites. Sites were a discriminant factor for cell height on the epidermal tissue, especially on the leaf adaxial surface, such tissue showing reduced thickness in plants exposed at the urban stations. The results suggest the use of C. echinata as a bioaccumulator of PM and C. ferrea as biosensor of urban pollution.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important crop in several regions of Brazil for having good agronomic performance in soils with low fertility and low water availability. Mathematical models adapted and tested in different environmental conditions are tools to describe the interactions between plant and environment. The objective of this study was to simulate the leaf number (LN) with two mathematical models, one that considers the linear effect and one that considers the nonlinear effect of air temperature on leaf appearance on the stems of cassava. Considering two versions in each model, one version uses the daily mean temperature (Tmean) and the other uses the daily minimum and maximum temperature (Tmm). The linear model is the model that uses the concept of phyllochron and nonlinear model is the Wang; Engel (WE) model. Model coefficients were estimated from a data set of accumulated number leaves, on the main stem and on the sympodial first and second order branching (HP, RS1 and RS2) of the variety of cassava "Fepagro RS 13", collected in experiments conducted on the field area, Crop Science Department, Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, in the growing seasons 2005/2006 and 2007/2008.The evaluation of the models was performed with independent data collected in the same location in the growing seasons 2006/2007, 2008/2009, 2009/2010 and 2010/2011, with different rainfall availability. The WE model provided the best estimate of leaf number in cassava, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.2 and 3.5 leaves, compared with the phyllochron model with 3.7 and 4.4 leaves for LN general utilizing temperature versions Tmean and Tmm, respectively. Among the versions of the models, for simplicity the versions that uses Tmean can be used, but in warmer regions the version that uses the daily minimum and maximum temperature (Tmm) is suggested.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth and development of watermelon hybrids in relation to air temperature by obtaining the thermal time for vegetative and reproductive subperiods for the hybrid cultivar Manchester and Top Gun, both early cycle were used. The experiment was conducted in an area belonging to the Federal University of Santa Maria/Campus Frederico Westphalen-RS, from September to December 2014. During the execution of the experiment, evaluations were performed every two days for the following characteristics: emission nodes/leaves, development of primary and secondary vines, and issuance of staminate flowers and pistillate. The spacing used was 1.5 m between plants and 3.0 m between rows of the crop. The values obtained for the evaluated criteria differ significantly where the hybrid Manchester demonstrated superiority over the hybrid Top Gun which presented average values of plastichrone with 16.6 °C day-1 node, the amount of nodes on the main vine was 45.8 nodes, the thermal sum for the issuance of secondary vines was 18.1 °C growing degree days-1 vine, and the final number of secondary vines and vines of 26.6, and a total number of growing degree days for staminate flower emission of 9.6 °C day-1 flower. The hybrid Top Gun was superior to the hybrid Manchester for the final number of primary vines, emitting on average 14.6 vines per plant and an accumulated growing degree day for pistillate flower emission of 51.9 °C day-1 flower. In the variables of thermal time on the main stem, primary stem, and growing degree day, the thermal time for primary and secondary vines, final number of staminate flowers and pistillate hybrids showed no statistical difference in mean values.

A semente é originada do óvulo anátropo e unitegumentado. No estádio final ocorre o amadurecimento do pericarpo...
Psychotria is the main Rubiaceae genus with nearly 1000 species worldwide. Owing to its magnitude, this genus is considered complex. Additionally, there is a lack of morphological features available to the definition of such group. The present study analyzed structural characteristics of seeds, leaves and pericarp of Psychotria hoffmannseggiana and Psychotria trichophora as well as the seedling of Psychotria hoffmannseggiana. The structure and development of the pericarp and seeds of such species are similar. The first fruit developmental stage consisted of the budding ovary and pre-anthesis flowers. The ovary is inferous, bicarpellary, bilocular with one ovule per loculus, and the placentation is basal axial. Seeds are originated from unitegmic anatropous ovule. During the second stage, there was a predominant meristematic activity both in the pericarp (mesocarp and endocarp) and in the seed tegmen. The third stage is characterized by the differentiation of the endocarp and inner mesocarp, and also the ripening of the seed. The endosperm is made up of thick wall cells, a large amount of starch and prismatic calcium oxalate crystals. The embryo is basal, spatulate and rudimentary. During the final stage the ripeness of the pericarp occurs by means of an increase in cell size and intercellular spaces of the mesocarp. The fruit increases in size and the mesocarp cells elongate considerably, exhibiting partially disintegrated walls. Mature fruits of both species are drupaceous with subglobose format. Such fruits have two free monospermatic pyrenes, dorsiventrally convex with a longitudinal sulcus on the ventral face. The leaves of Psychotria hoffmannseggiana and Psychotria trichophora are simple, opposite, elliptic, dorsiventral and hypostomatic. The petiole and blade epidermis is uniserial and pappilose concerning Psychotria hoffmannseggiana. Both species have paracitic... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

AbstractPotassium (K) fertilizer recommendations for annual crops in the USA are generally founded in soil test results. The goal of this chapter is to highlight additional plant-related traits that may impact crop responses to K fertilization. This includes the role of tissue testing, the influence of luxury consumption, genetic improvement of K use efficiency, genotype × environment × management interactions on K uptake and yield, response to foliar K fertilization, intraplant K cycling, fungal associations and K uptake, the influence of K on crop quality, and the role of K in abiotic stress tolerance. Recognizing the potential role of these plant factors may help reconcile response inconsistencies based solely on soil test information, and improve future K recommendations. Finally, we hope to highlight knowledge gaps and opportunities for additional integrated soil–plant K research.

Résumé :
AbstractAbove- and belowground systems are linked via plant chemistry. In forested systems, leaf litter chemistry and quality mirror that of green foliage and have important afterlife effects. In systems where belowground inputs dominate, such as grasslands, or in ecosystems where aboveground biomass is frequently removed by burning or harvesting, foliar traits may provide important information regarding belowground inputs via exudates and fine-root turnover. Many, if not most, of the plant traits that drive variation in belowground processes are also measurable via remote sensing technologies. The ability of remote sensing techniques to measure fine-scale biodiversity and plant chemistry over large spatial scales can help researchers address ecological questions that were previously prohibitively expensive to address. Key to these potential advances is the idea that remotely sensed vegetation spectra and plant chemistry can provide detailed information about the function of belowground processes beyond what traditional field sampling can provide.

Résumé :
Abstract This is Part 2 of two papers discussing the significance of two key factors of crack like flaw assessment in the Fitness for Service assessment. While FEM analysis technology has been advancing amazingly in recent years, and FEM based fitness-for-service assessment of a damaged components, such as crack like flaws and local metal loss assessment, has become mainstream in assessments, it is still important to understand the reference stress solution based on a limit load analysis and the role of each factor in the failure mode to control the damaged component safely until the end of its life. In API 579-1/ASME FFS-1[1], Part 9, Assessment of Crack like Flaws, those reference stress solutions were developed based on the limit load analysis using Folias factor Mt and surface correction factor Ms. Folias factor Mt and surface correction factor Ms, are factors that account for the bulging effect around flaws. Those factors enable prediction of a maximum allowable pressure of a damaged cylindrical shell from a simple flat plate model that contain same size of a damaged area. As for Folias factor, Mt, it is well known to express the relationship between the reference stress of a through-wall crack flat plate and a through-wall crack cylinder. The application of Mt is clearly defined in ASME/API 579 FFS-1 part 9C, as well as papers by Folias et al. The the significance of the surface correction factor for surface flaw, Ms, has not been commonly understood well enough in general. Unfortunately, API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 also does not clearly mention its significance and how Ms is to be applied in the stress analysis. At a glance, Ms looks like a similar factor to Mt, and it is tempting to simply apply Ms to primary membrane stress term like Mt, but that is not correct. Eventually, an incorrect application of Ms would lead to an incorrect discussion of a flaw characterization. Often, there is a question about ASME/API 579 FFS-1 Part 9C reference stress solutions, especially for ASME/API 579 FFS-1 eq. 9C.76, from the misunderstanding meaning of the Ms factor. Addressing this issue is important to maintain the integrity of the Fitness-For-Service technology. In this Part 2 of two papers, validation of equations obtained in Part 1 are discussed and proven based on FEM analysis.

Résumé :
Investigations on the potential beneficial effect of humic substances on crop plant cultivation under extremely diverse soil and climatic conditions is of global character, thereby knowledge obtained on the basis of local investigations are of great importance world-wide. The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of different application methods (seed tuber treatment and foliar application) of commercially-produced peat and vermicompost extracts on nutrient uptake in tubers and yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) using field experiments in organic farming system with potato variety ‘Borodjanskij Rozovij’. The tested extracts from the organic products included: peat extract (K45) and vermicompost extract (B45) obtained at +45°C by cavitation. The investigation was carried out at Stende Research Centre (Institute of Agro-resources and Economics) from 2011 to 2012. The chemical composition (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo, B) of potato tubers was determined. The application of organic extract from vermicompost had a stimulating effect on mineral nutrient as N, P, K, Mg, and S accumulation in potato tubers, but 50% of cases showed reduction in Ca and Cu content that could influence the storage of tubers. The use of peat extract was significantly effective when the tubers were treated before planting. On average, tuber treatment and foliar spray with organic extracts contributed to 10% of tuber yield increase.

Résumé :
The kinetics of the fiber orientation during processing of short-fiber composites governs both the processing characteristics and the cured part performance. The flow kinetics of the polymer melt dictates the fiber orientation kinetics, and in turn the underlying fiber orientation dictates the bulk flow characteristics. It is beyond computational comprehension to model the equation of motion of the full fiber orientation probability distribution function. Instead, typical industrial simulations rely on the computationally efficient equation of motion of the second-order orientation tensor (also known as the second-order moment of the orientation distribution function) to model the characteristics of the fiber orientation within a polymer suspension. Unfortunately, typical implementation forms of any order orientation tensor equation of motion requires the next higher, even ordered, orientation tensor, thus necessitating a closure of the higher order expression. The recently developed Fast Exact Closure avoids the classical closure problem by solving a set of related second-order tensor equations of motion, and yields the exact solution for pure Jeffery’s motion as the diffusion goes to zero. Typical closures are obtained through a fitting process, and are often obtained by fitting for orientation states obtained from solutions of the full orientation distribution function, thus tying the closure to the flows from which it was fit. With the recent understandings of the limitations of the Folgar and Tucker (1984) model of fiber interactions during processing, it has become clear the importance of developing a closure that is independent of any choice of fitting data. The Fast Exact Closure presents an alternative in that it is constructed independent of any fitting process. Results demonstrate that when diffusion exists, the solution is not only physical, but solutions for flows experiencing Folgar-Tucker diffusion are shown to exhibit an equal to or greater accuracy than solutions relying on closures developed via a curve fitting approach.

Résumé :
An integrated molding-heat transfer modeling methodology is used to study the thermal characteristics of polymer composite fins subjected to convective heat transfer coefficients. Numerical predictions of the fiber orientation in a representative, injection-molded plate fin, based on the Folgar-Tucker model, are used, via the classic Nielsen model, to determine the anisotropic variation of thermal conductivity in the fin. Thermal simulations are then performed to determine the effect of both global and local thermal anisotropy on the temperature distribution and heat transfer rate of the anisotropic fin. It is also shown that the harmonic mean conductivity, in the axial direction, can be used to represent the heat loss of an anisotropic fin to better than 10% accuracy.

Résumé :
Studies on the monitoring of the most damaging defoliant species of oaks (Lymantria dispar and Totrix viridana) through pheromone traps in forest ecosystems are some of the rare achievements in this field, for our country. It has been shown that during the vegetation season there is an alternation of defoliant species, with the presence and development of the II generations, harmful to the foliar limb (the quantity of pests being higher during the first generations and reduced in the second generation). The activity of phytophagus insects was directly influenced by the climatic conditions in the studied areas, the presence of the nutrition source - oaks and the presence of the infestation source. Based on the evidence of males captured in the pheromone traps, digital maps of the spatial distribution of the imago of studied species were developed, which allowed the determination of the position, the direction of spreading and the size of the pests (the necessary studies in sustainable forest management).

Résumé :
Host quality can have dramatic effects on performance of biological control agents but its importance is understudied. We used a combination of field measurements and laboratory experiments to determine the range of foliar nitrogen (FN) that larvae of the alligatorweed flea beetle (Agasicles hygrophila) are exposed to in the field and its importance to larval development and dispersal. Seasonal variability in FN was assessed at field sites spanning southern to northern Louisiana every 2–3 weeks during the growing season for four years. In a series of laboratory experiments, alligatorweed FN was manipulated to examine its influence on larval development and survival (under different temperature regimes), adult biomass, and dispersal of the biological control agent, A. hygrophila. Foliar nitrogen and rearing temperature had strong independent effects on larval development rate. We demonstrated that increasing nitrogen in leaf tissues shortens larval A. hygrophila developmental time and increases survival to adulthood, regardless of exposure temperature during development. It also suggests that foliar nitrogen may have important effects on biological control of alligatorweed, particularly as a result of seasonal variation in temperature and plant nutrition at field sites and could contribute to observed variation in A. hygrophila efficacy in the field.

Résumé :
Invasive exotic plant (IEP) species are a significant threat to natural ecosystem integrity and biodiversity, and controlling them is a high priority for the National Park Service. The North-ern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) selected the early detection of IEPs as one of 11 monitoring protocols to be implemented as part of its long-term monitoring program. From May 30 to June 1, 2019, network staff conducted surveys for priority IEP species along the Scenic Drive and Cathedral Valley Road monitoring routes at Capitol Reef National Park. We detected 119 patches of six priority IEP species along 34 kilometers of the two monitor-ing routes. There were more patches of IEPs, and a higher percentage of large patches, than in previous years. This indicates that previously identified infestations have expanded and grown. The most common (47.1%) patch size among priority species was 1,000–2,000 m2 (0.25–0.5 acre). The vast majority (93.2%) of priority patches ranked either low (58.8%) or very low (34.4%) on the patch management index scale. Tamarisk (Tamarix sp., 72 patches) was the most prevalent priority IEP species. African mustard (Malcolmia africana, 32 patch-es), field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis, 9 patches), and Russian olive (Elaeagnus angusti-folia, 3 patches) occurred less commonly. Together, these four species represented 97.5% of all patches recorded in 2019. Four IEP species were found on the monitored routes for the first time: Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia), quackgrass (Elymus repens), Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila), and African mustard (Malcolmia africana, not on the priority species list before 2019). Cathedral Valley Road had higher IEP priority patches per kilometer (5.68) than the Scenic Drive (2.05). IEP species were found on 37.9% (25 of 66) of monitored transects. Almost all these detections were Russian thistle (Salsola sp.). Russian thistle was widespread, present in 33.3% of transects, with an estimated cover of 0.2% across all transects sampled. Across routes monitored in all three rotations (2012, 2015, and 2019), Russian thistle has increased in frequency. However, its frequency remained about the same from 2015 to 2019, and percent cover remains low. Tamarisk and field bindweed have both increased in preva-lence since monitoring began, with tamarisk showing a dramatic increase in the number and size of patches. Immediate control of tamarisk and these other species is recommended to reduce their numbers on these routes. The NCPN plans to Capitol Reef in 2020 to monitor Oak and Pleasant creeks, completing the third rotation of invasive plant monitoring.
