Texte intégralThree meta-analyses were conducted to synthesize results of previous research on the association between adult attachment with parents and the quality of romantic relationships in adulthood. These meta-analyzes address the link between attachment security and three components of romantic relationships, namely the quality of interactions, attachment to the partner and dyadic satisfaction. Results indicate a moderate association between adult attachment and each of these components of romantic relationships. A longitudinal study was subsequently conducted to address specific questions raised by these meta-analyses. The link between attachment and romantic relationships in adulthood was examined in a longitudinal study, starting in adolescence and continuing until participants were 41-years-old (mean). Seventy-five individuals participated at three different time points. The first participation took place in 1992 or 1996 (time 1), the second in 2007 (time 2), and the third in 2019 (time 3). Measures on the quality of their relationships, and the stability of their relationships were obtained at times 2 and 3, where as attachment data (Adult Attachment Interview; AAI) was collected at time 1, when participants were late adolescents or early adults. A double mediation model shows that adolescents who are more preoccupied with attachment are less intimate and less involved in their romantic relationships at the age of 28; that a low level of perceived intimacy and engagement at the age of 28 is associated with low level of stabilityin romantic relationships in the early 40s; that a shorter relationship in the early 40s is associated with a weaker commitment to the partner. The results of these studies suggest that attachment organization in late adolescents and young adults may have a bearing on the mechanisms involved in the dynamics of romantic relationships during adulthood.

Thesis, Normandie, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018NORMC048.
Texte intégralThis work is composed of two main studies: The first study intended to validate a French version of the of the measure of adult attachment qualities (MAQ; Carver, 1997). The second study is designed to assess the attachment qualities of young adults previously placed in foster care and put them in perspective with the perception they have of parental support received in foster care. The results of the first study show that the MAQ-Fr scale has adequate levels of internal consistency, temporal stability, and good construct validity. We can consider that it is therefore a good tool for assessing the qualities of attachment to a French adult population. The results of the second study show that the participants have been affected by their foster care experience. Their relationship styles indicate that their attachment style in adulthood has been influenced to some extent by their individual experiences in foster care. These types of attachment are related both to foster parental support and the conditions in which the placement (s) was made. Insecure attachment patterns influence the relational evolution of adults who have been in foster care. They then developed "working internal models" hat provoke defenses that actually reinforce the anxieties and mistrust already present due to early relationship traumas. This study provides both positive indications that the children placed suffer pain related to their attachment difficulties and that these can be modified in good or bad according to the sensitivity of the host environments to these difficulties of 'attachment. The final results highlight the importance of foster care placement and relationships between young in foster care and their foster parents, as these factors are likely to influence attachment in adulthood in a form of securing while reinforcing empowerment and mentalizing abilities

Texte intégralThis research draws on an approach combining contributions from developmental, organizational and environmental psychology to understand the place of workplace attachment styles in the organizational setting. The goal is to identify the relationship between adult attachment styles and workplace attachment styles, but also to understand the impact of physic caractheristic of work environment on workplace attachment styles. To do this we have two objectives:The first objective is to determine if there are different attachment styles to the workplace and to explore the relationship between adult attachment style and workplace attachment style. The second objective is to understand the influence of physical characteristics of the work environment on workplace attachment style via environmental satisfaction. The results reveal firstly that high scores of secure workplace attachment are significantly correlated with the secure attachment style, while particularly low scores are correlated with the insecure attachment style. Second, that workplace attachment styles are correlated with environmental satisfaction at work. The hypothesized mediating effect of environmental satisfaction on the relationship between the physical characteristics of the work environment and workplace attachment style was found for all three attachment styles: secure, avoidant and preoccupied, in opposite directions

Texte intégralThe transition indicates the passage, for a patient who has been treated for a paediatric cancer, from paediatric medical follow up towards adult medicine. This is a very critical time in the course of care which totally escapes the usual protocols. In addition, the medical literature apprehends only very insufficiently all the issues involved, in particular from the intrapsychic and intersubjective points of view. The prospect of separation between paediatricians and their patients raises many medical issues and especially emotional unes. In order to explore them, we carried out eighteen semi-structured interviews on the transition with paediatricians in onco-hematology, practicing in one of the four specialized centres in Ile-de-France. The thematic analysis of the interviews was supplemented by the use of an instrument (Edicode) taking into account the narrative characteristics of the speech, in reference to the attachment theory and its current developments around the question of narrativity. We have shows how the transition took here the value of a reality-testing, forcing doctor and patient to measure together the cost of the cure, in particular through the after-effects of cancer treatments. Certain ideals and unconscious fantasies at work within the paediatric vocation are also highlighted at the time of the transition. Finally the transition must, in these particular wards, being considered in the light of disappearances related to the deaths of children and adolescents which colour of a very particular psychic environment the separations linked to the transition 'of young people towards the adult medicine

Texte intégralStarting university is a period of major transition with many changes in roles, statuses, and environments. This transitional period corresponds to the beginning of the becoming an adult. The developmental challenge of this time involves autonomy and independence issues. Autonomy and independence are acquired progressively and are expressed through young adults’ representations of family functioning and their own functioning. Thus, the family environment, attachment representations, home-leaving experience, and self-determination processes are expressions of becoming adult that are particularly questioned during this major transition. With a holistic-interactionist point of view, the current research aims to investigate young adults’ psychosocial development when they enter at the university considering specificities of the developmental period. Our sample consisted of freshman young adults. Using a longitudinal approach, this research had three waves and to two separate cohorts. The first wave was during the back-to- school period, in September/October (N = 1,142); the second wave in the middle of the freshman year, in February/March (N = 248); and the third wave at the end of the year, in June/July (N = 101). In each wave, participants completed the questionnaire assessing family environment (i.e., parents-child relationship and family relationships), attachment representations, home-leaving, self-determination process (i.e., academic motivation and basic psychological needs), and psychosocial adjustment (i.e., psychological well-being, self- worth, depression, and academic results). Data were analyzed using both person-oriented and variable-oriented approaches and considered the different kinds of variability. Our results highlight the heterogeneity and multiplicity of family environment, attachment, and self-determination profiles, home leaving classes, and developmental patterns in the beginning of the freshman year. Family environment, attachment, and self- determination profiles presented a singular evolution during freshman year. Concerning psychosocial adjustment, our results showed that personal characteristics (i.e., attachment and self-determination processes) have an effect on adjustment across the freshman year unlike environmental contexts (i.e., family environment and home leaving). Psychosocial adjustment evolution during the year appeared to be positive and stable for positive profiles of family environment, attachment, and self-determination whereas it was unstable for negative profiles. Finally, our results replace basic psychological needs as important levers allowing a better adaptation during transitional periods. These different observations give a complementary perspective to literature and provide an opportunity to discuss possible applications in the support of emerging adults in the university context

Texte intégralWhile 2% to 3% of the entire French population is, or has been, concerned by Child Welfare (CW) as a minor, few research is focused on this part of society. Combined with this, the child protection system appears complex and obscure to a large part of the population, and also to partners such as carers. In this domain, which evolves almost in parallel with society, 164000 minors were separated in 2018 and then placed outside their homes in France. Only 800 of them were separated and then hospitalized in Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC).Since these centres are rare and poorly approached by research, and since all minors accompanied by the CW, often at the interface between psychiatry, psychology, somatic and social sciences, have a difficult place to establish, we felt it necessary to set up a study. To this end, we evaluated, through a cross-sectional and retrospective study, the adult outcome of children separated from their families and then admitted to 4 TFCs in child psychiatry sectors. The inclusion criteria were as follows: over 20 years old at the time of the study; admitted to TFC at least 8 years of age; out of TFC for at least 3 years.According to these criteria, 33 participants were included. They were 26.73 years old (±3.25), separated from their parents at 21.73 months (±13.25) and admitted to TFC at 30.27 months (±17.40).Quantitative evaluation uses the following tools: Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Functional and Socio-affective Impact, CaMir (attachment) and Edicode (narrativity). The qualitative part uses Grounded Theory (GT). Our results show that the group of 33 participants has a narrative, attachment representations and socio-economic profile comparable to the results in the general population.Care, on average over 13 years (±2.10), is significantly associated with a better outcome as an adult, when linked to a parent-child separation before 18-25 months. The care seems to have allowed a resumption of a subjectivation that had been hindered by links of an irremovable and disorganizing nature.Despite the fact that our results show that the future is satisfactory, all participants stress, through the analysis by the GT, the abandonment of institutions in adulthood, and the need for an assessment interview a few years after the placement. Our qualitative results combined with the literature on the subject contribute to the importance of a systematic support programme between the ages of 18 and 25 years old for all former miners in care

Texte intégralThe link between personality, health and disease has been a central question for centuries, even if it remains controversial in France. Much research around the world has been carried out in this field particularly in the study of cancer, which is the basis of the present approach. This kind of research immediately raises the question of measurement, which is quite complex in relation to personality traits. The present research selected five self-evaluation tests, which are among the most widely used and which have already provided promising results in health Psychology. Although these tools emerge from different theoretical backgrounds, they were examined together through various statistical procedures with the aim of determining the relationships among them. A main objective was to categorise subjects, since health or disease primarily concerns individuaIs who tend to be overlooked in dimensional approaches focusing on variables. The main results uncover an underlying construct composed of two central dimensions in the theory of attachment: self-and other-representation. This structure is recurrent throughout the analyses of our sample. It accounts for the coherence of previous results obtained with these different scales and constitutes a solid basis for categorising subjects. A complementary set of results provides finer analyses and the assessment of other theoretical factors relevant to clinical or health Psychology. Globally, this research contributes an evaluation tool which is more reliable than each of the separate tests composing it. As such, it constitutes a useful way to advance research in many areas concerned with assessing personality traits

Texte intégralThis thesis tells a journey of a clinician, with back and forth between a psychotherapeutic practice and conceptual thinking, trying to move towards an integrative approach for addressing complex situations in psychotraumatology. Guided by the desire to learn, but also examining field practice, we have expanded, step by step, our psychotraumatologic approach, coming to a proposal of an integrative and original treatment model. We hope this model may allow clinicians to adapt to the complex reality of complex and chronic traumatized persons, without getting lost. The presentation of different publications and clinical cases illustrate this line of thought and practices in order to achieve a rigorous model that can be subjected to scientific testing as well as put to the proof of the psychotherapy field

Texte intégralThe aim of this thesis was to elucidate the link between adult romantic attachment, relationship satisfaction, therapeutic mandates and couple therapy outcome. Couples seeking therapy in a natural setting completed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Spanier, 1976) and the Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) at intake. Therapists classified the therapeutic mandate pursued in each case (i.e., alleviation of couple distress or ambivalence resolution) according to the Classification of Therapeutic Mandates Questionnaire (Poitras-Wright & St-Père, 2004). When treatment ceased, couples were classified as dropouts or completers according to therapists’ judgment, and completers were further assessed using the Dyadic Adjustment Scale. In the first of two articles, the association between adult romantic attachment and pre-treatment marital satisfaction was investigated in a sample of 172 distressed couples seeking therapy, as well as in a comparison sample of 56 nondistressed couples seeking therapy. Results showed that attachment avoidance was a distinctive characteristic of distressed couples and that it was a strong predictor of marital dissatisfaction among distressed couples seeking therapy. Based on a series of 141 couple therapy cases, the second article examined therapeutic mandates, romantic attachment orientations, and pre-treatment marital satisfaction as predictors of premature disengagement from couple therapy. The most striking result was that an ambivalence resolution mandate was strongly associated with increased chances of treatment discontinuation. Predictors of couple therapy outcome were also examined: actor-partner analyses revealed that the strongest predictor of post-treatment marital satisfaction was pre-treatment marital satisfaction, despite the inclusion of romantic attachment among the predictor variables. Overall, these results indicate that attachment insecurity is strongly related to distressed couples’ marital dissatisfaction, but that it might not impede the attainment of a positive outcome in couple therapy. In sum, this thesis contributed to the field of couple therapy by investigating the pertinence of attachment theory in couple treatment, and highlighting the need for further study of therapeutic mandates in couple therapy. Clinical implications for couple therapy are discussed, and recommendations for clinical research offered.

Texte intégralSince a few decades, researchers have acknowledged the evidence of a complementarity between the roles of the father and the mother in the development of infant attachment. While the mother plays a main role in caregiving, the father tends to promote exploratory behavior, respect of rules and frequently act has a playmate. Numerous studies have shown an association between caregiver’s attachment and infant’s attachment with a stronger effect for mothers, which is widely discussed in terms of intergenerational attachment transmission. Nowadays, between the two parents, there is a less hermetic division of tasks associated with caregiving and there is a growing agreement that the father can be perceived as a secure figure. We studied a normative sample of 182 heterosexual biparental families living in the Montreal area. The first objective was to examine the association between parent’s attachment assessed with the Relationship Scale Questionnaire (RSQ) and infant-parent attachment measured with the Strange Situation Procedure (SSP). Our second objective was to look at the role of time spent by the parent with his child as a moderator of the above-mentioned association. Unlike our predictions, no significative association was found between the maternal RSQ and the infant-mother SSP. Nevertheless, fathers with whom a secured attachment is developed distinguish themselves by a significantly higher security score on the RSQ. Furthermore, while the time spent by the father with the infant hasn’t been linked with father-infant attachment, it was, however, associated with mother-infant attachment. Concerning this association, the time spent by the father with his child was negatively associated with resistance during the mother-infant SSP, positively associated with Secure type and negatively associated with Resistant type. Finally, the time the parents spent together with the child was positively associated with the Secure type and negatively associated with Disorganize attachment. At this study’s conclusion, we believe the RSQ might assess dimensions other than the ones usually associated with the SSP, which would make this instrument less recommended in future research on attachment transmission. The time the father spends with his child doesn’t seem to influence his attachment. However, our results suggest the time spend by the father with the mother-infant dyad might have direct and indirect benefices on the mother-infant attachment.

Texte intégralAttention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is present in a large number of school-aged children. Many of them are also suffering from comorbid agressive or anxious disorders. Behavioral manifestations and the consequences that arise, have not only an influence on the child, but also on the parent. Some studies suggest that, for those parents, these conditions are associated with a higher level of stress, a lower sense of self-efficacy, more depressive symptoms and lower marital satisfaction. Other findings relate the opposite. Why are these results in conflict? This study aims, firstly, to examine, in a Quebec sample of 110 parents of children with AD/HD, if the children’s characteristics of AD/HD (diagnostic profile and the presence of a comorbid disorder) are related to their parent’s personal characteristics (parental stress, sense of self-efficacy, depressive symptoms and marital satisfaction). Second, we examine whether adult attachment is linked with those four parental characteristics and if it moderates the relationship between children’s AD/HD characteristics and parent’s personal characteristics. Results indicate that the child’s diagnostic profile is related to parent’s depressive symptoms and that the presence of comorbid disorders is related with parent’s marital satisfaction. Also, an interaction effect between child’s diagnostic profile and presence of comorbid disorders is observed on parental stress level. In addition, results showed a significant relation between adult attachment style and parent’s sense of self-efficacy only, confirming that parents with a secure-autonomous attachment style have a higher sense of self-efficacy than those with an insecure-ambivalent attachment style. No moderating effect of adult attachment on the relationship between child’s AD/HD characteristics and parent’s personal characteristics is observed.
Lorange, Justine. « Modèle de la compatibilité fondé sur l’attachement et la personnalité chez des couples en détresse ». Thèse, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/5314.
Texte intégralThe first goal of this thesis is to propose a new model of compatibility. Partner’s compatibility is conceptualized from two attachment dimensions (avoidance and anxiety) as well as personality trait (neurotism). The second goal was to test this model on a sample of couples seeking marital therapy. A critical literature review on the role of compatibility in the understanding of couples’ dynamics is completed, underlining the relevance of improving this concept’s definition by taking attachment and neurotism into account. Methodological and statistical issues to consider are also discussed. To evaluate the predictive validity of the model, 365 couples completed the Dyadic adjustment scale (Spanier, 1976), the NEO-FFI (Costa & McCrae, 1992) and the Experiences in close relationships questionnaire (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) at intake. The association between personality, attachment and marital satisfaction is first examined with the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (Kashy & Snyder, 1995). Results show that attachment avoidance is negatively associated with marital satisfaction for spouses themselves as well as for their partners. Analysis of similarities and differences is then performed, revealing that differences between partners on the combination of avoidance and neurotism are correlated with marital insatisfaction. To examine the patterns of natural groupings between partners in the sample, clusters analyses were conducted. Seven different types of couples exhibiting significant differences in their marital satisfaction were found. Three main groups of couples were identified within these types, the first one regrouping mostly satisfied couples, a second one including very dissatisfied partners and a last one presenting a difference between the man’s and the women’s satisfaction. These results could be considered as provinding preliminary confirmation of our compatibility model based on attachment and neurotism, but these propositions must be validated. Some elements of the present findings suggest that it is the combination of attachment anxiety, avoidance and neurotism between partners that is linked to severity of marital distress. However, many challenges, conceptual, theoretical, as well as methodological, are then discussed and future scientific contributions are proposed in order to consolidate the conceptual base of compatibility.
