The article highlights the problem of structural configuration of the representation of polymentality of the textual world. It focuses on the problem of polymentality (ambiguity) of the text. It is proposed to address it in the context of psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics. On that ground, the study substantiates the figure-background relations as a necessary characteristic of the manifestation of the author's sensorics. Such an approach allows not only revealing cognitive mechanisms that underlie polymentality of the literary text but also systematizing the structural configuration of its representation. The dynamics of figure-background relations (as a way of cognition) is fully manifested in the author's sensorics, often performing certain communicative tasks. The identification of common mechanisms of specificity of the interaction of figure and background in the interpretation of text meaning promotes the use of psychological approaches. The last represent the process of formation and perception of a new meaning as a process of self-organization of a complex system. The results show that the problem of the structural configuration of the representation of the polymentality of the literary text can be solved through the psychological analysis of the author's sensory in terms of figure-background relations in the gestalt-psychological discourse.

Literature as a cultural product reflects the social conditions of the stories it tells. In the pesantren ecosystem, the existence of the kiai as a central figure, social background and culture that is held for generations, has become the trigger for the roots of patriarchal culture to this day. Literature can be used as a means of conveying the author's ideology so that in literary works the author's tendencies can be identified. This study aims to analyze how the author's tendency towards patriarchal culture is reflected in Khilma Anis' novels. The objects studied were 3 novels by Khilma Anis, namely Jadilah Purnamaku, Ning (2016), Wigati: Lintang Manik Woro (2018), and Hati Suhita (2019). This research is a type of qualitative research. The approach used is feminist literary criticism. Data was collected by heuristic reading technique and then analyzed by hermeneutic technique. The results of the research show that in the novel Hati Suhita the author's tendency is the tendency to fight against patriarchal culture. The subject of the research in the article is the reception of the figure and fate of Leo Tolstoy in biographies written in the period from 1894 to 2020, as well as its historical and cultural dynamics. The authors identify strategies for studying the life of Leo Tolstoy by biographers of different historical periods, which allows us to analyze and evaluate the dynamics of perception of the writer's figure in the XIX-XXI centuries. The reception of the figure of Leo Tolstoy in different historical periods is heterogeneous: the interpretation of the writer's image is influenced not only by the personal preferences of biographers, their goals and objectives, but also by the value orientations set by time. The historical epoch also influences the author's strategies for creating the image of Leo Tolstoy. Biographies of Leo Tolstoy written by different authors are devided into three groups: biographies created by contemporaries of Leo Tolstoy; biographies written by authors of the Soviet period; biographies of the post-Soviet period. Such division is due to a change in the historical context that affects the reception and interpretation of the image of the hero of the biography.

This study explains the presence of da’wa influencers on social media. To narrow the discussion, the author takes a case study on TikTok social media. This study aims to determine whether new figures of da’wa on social media shift the old religious authority or traditional figures. The author describes this discussion using Heidi Campbell's digital religion concept approach. The author's analysis shows that these da’wa influencers do not claim to be scholars or religious scholars. The delivery of their da’wa is relaxed and not patronizing. The existence of this new da’wa figure belongs to the logic of continuity and complementarity, which means that their legitimacy is a form of continuity or as a successor of the old figure's authority.

This study is devoted to the investigation of the narrator’s typology in the modern German-language travel novel, in particular the first-person narrative. The range of unresolved problems in the typology of the narrator is outlined, namely the expediency of studying the author’s image in a travel novel. On the example of the work of the famous German writer-traveler and reporter A. Altmann, the author's position is analyzed and the author's intentions are established. Peculiarities of the formation of modern wandering novel prose determine a high degree of autobiography in the work. Using the "I" -telling, the author-protagonist forms a combination of the real author, the narrator and the main character, offers the reader a world created by him, in which the focus is on the author's impressions and guidelines. For the reader to rethink, it remains to follow the author's reflection and determine which of the described is real and which is the author's fantasy. An attempt is made to analyze the author's selfpresentation at the compositional-speech and speech-stylistic levels. This novel is 12th of the 23 novels by the famous German reporter and travel writer A. Altmann. It is a combination of historical and geographical information, the stories of ordinary Australians, philosophical considerations and the author's reflection on what is seen. The figure of the author with his spiritual values and critical attitude to society found its imprint in the image of the author, creating the impression of complete identity with the real author. It is a novel with predominant compositional and speech forms - messages with descriptive elements and author's reflections. A typical architectural-speech form of the work is a monologue-reflection. At the speech-stylistic level, it should be noted the author's perfect use of a wide range of stylistically colored lexical layer from poetic to colloquial language. In the future, it is considered appropriate to compare and explore the author's position in the modern Ukrainian and German travel novel.

This article represents the author's experience in the comparative study of one of the figures of expressive syntax - chiasmatic constructions, functioning in fiction texts. The object of study in this study are chiasmas extracted from texts of fiction in Russian and French, the subject – linguopragmatic characteristics of chiasmatic constructions. Chiasmatic construction, or the figure of crossing, is one of the most complex and multifaceted rhetorical figures. Its appearance is the result of the interaction and fusion of several syntactic structures; this includes expressive constructions of syntactic parallelism, repetition, antithesis or contraposition, and inversion. The name itself comes from the peculiarities of the structure of the chiasmus, in which the second part is an inverse repetition of the first, such an intersection of parts generates a figure similar to the letter "x" - hence the ancient Greek name of the structure. Such constructions are individual, occurring mostly in winged sayings, phraseological units, fiction prose and most often in poetry. The conclusions and provisions developed in these studies, due to their theoretical value and significance, allow us to see the specificity of this figure of expressive syntax. At the same time, the analysis of the corresponding literature and the requirements for scientific research put forward by the time itself and the changes taking place in the society, which are naturally reflected in the language and in its functional stratification, testify to the necessity of the research directed to the complex illumination of problems of the syntax of a fiction text in the comparative aspect.

The article deals with the issues of artistic perception culture of fictional texts. The sufficiency of literary reading is derived from the aesthetic specificity of verbal art: from special status of an author's figure, from the special nature of the artistic sense, from the special text organization as a combination of the reader's impression factors. According to M. Bakhtin, literature is interpreted as the art of “indirect speaking”, where the author “puts on silence” because in fictional text we never deal with the writer's speech, it is always mediated by the figure of the talking hero or the narrator. The artistic perception of fictional texts should be studied as a reader's skill. The culture of reading is the complementarity of two differently directed vectors: it is a deep and sincere empathy, as if it were reality; on the other hand – the reader's creativity in relation to the text artfullness, which conceals the meaning of the art work. The artistic sense is actualized by the reader's consciousness as complementary to the author's consciousness manifested in the text.

The purpose of this study is to describe the author's world view in Dewi Lestari Perahu Kertas novel. This research is based on qualitative research with genetic structuralism approach. Data analysis techniques, namely the analysis of facts of humanity, collective subject analysis, analysis of the author's novel view of Perahu Kertas, make the conclusion. The results of this study are (1) socio-cultural conditions of society contained in the Perahu Kertas novel that is the social relations of the figure with the community environment; (2) the socio-cultural life of the society contained in the Perahu Kertas novel, namely the views on work, social status, and the difference between the wishes of the parents and the wishes of a child; (3) the author's world view in this research is about young scholars who must face the reality of life between seeking work for the sake of existence and maintaining dreams for idealism. The conclusion of this study refers to the author's world view contained in Perahu Kertas novel by analyzing the facts of humanity and collective subjects on the study of genetic structuralism.

The long-serving principal of Darul Quran (DQ) who has contributed to Quranic Education in Malaysia is Dato Sallehuddin Omar. His service as the principal of DQ began from 1980 to 1993. This al-Quran figure has made a significant contribution to Quranic education since his return from Egypt in 1976 until now. The study was to look at his educational background from the primary level until he successfully obtained a bachelor’s degree. It also looks into his in-depth education in the field of Quran and Qiraat as well as his major contributions in Quranic education. Hence, his involvement in the study of the Quran is studied starting from reciting, memorizing the Quran and gaining deeper understanding in the learning of Qiraat. The study was written according to the author's interview method with this figure in several meeting sessions. In addition, it also refers to the author's interviews with some of his successful students and refers to the writings of some of his students with him during the figure's visit to their place. This study has found that Dato Sallehuddin Omar is a figure who has contributed a lot to the development of al-Quran education in Malaysia. He has proposed to the PSD to upgrade the tahfiz certificate to the Tahfiz Diploma. Apart from that, he has also made a great contribution in publishing the Mushaf Rasm Uthmani in which the address of waqf is referred to the book of Manar al-Huda.

Cette étude examine la reconstruction de la figure d'auteur de Jean Giono après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en évaluant ses fondements littéraires et historiques. Écrivain célèbre et reconnu depuis la fin des années 1920, Giono se retrouve au sortir de la guerre dans une situation d'ostracisme : inscrit sur la « liste noire » des auteurs accusés de collaboration, démodé à l'heure de l'existentialisme, Giono doit, à l'âge de cinquante ans, repartir de zéro. Les épreuves de la guerre et de la prison, l'échec de son combat pour la paix et les « vraies richesses », ont en outre fortement ébranlé ses conceptions de la littérature comme de la nature humaine. Cette crise conduit Giono à engager une profonde réinvention de sa figure d'auteur, dans une quête identitaire inséparable d'une entreprise de reconquête. Notre travail interroge les processus et les enjeux de cette reconstruction, qui est portée par l'écrivain lui-même, à travers la refonte de son oeuvre et de sa posture, mais aussi par le public, témoin et sujet actif de cette « renaissance ». Après la guerre, Giono reconfigure son être-auteur par rapport à son propre modèle auctorial d'avant-guerre, mais aussi en relation avec les forces nouvelles qui dominent alors le champ littéraire : celles issues de la Résistance, qui promeuvent le modèle de l'écrivain engagé ; celles des avant-gardes formalistes, qui cherchent à inventer un « Nouveau Roman ». A famous and recognized writer since the end of the 1920s, Giono finds himself in a situation of ostracism at the end of the war: registered on the "black list" of authors accused of collaboration, out of fashion at the time of existentialism, Giono has, at the age of fifty, to start again from scratch. The ordeals of war and prison, the failure of his fight for peace and "true riches", have also strongly shaken his conceptions of literature and human nature. This crisis leads Giono to undertake a profound reinvention of his author's figure, in a quest for identity inseparable from an enterprise of reconquest. Our work questions the processes and the stakes of this reconstruction, which is carried by the writer himself, through the redefining of his work and his posture, but also by the public, witness and active subject of this "rebirth". After the war, Giono reconfigures his being-author in relation to his own pre-war authorial model, but also in relation to the new forces that then dominate the literary field: those stemming from the Resistance, which promote the model of the committed writer; those of the formalist avant-gardes, which seek to invent a "New Novel". Through the case of Giono, we thus aim to bring to light the way in which an author is made, unmade and remade, in a constant interaction with the reactions of the public and the evolutions of a literary field itself crossed by the movements of History

For all the critical attention paid to the author in literary theory and criticism, there has been no study of the film medium’s fascination with authors and authorship. Every year, Hollywood produces numerous films about poets, playwrights, novelists, and screenwriters. This thesis explores the narrative and cinematic potential of the author. In broad terms, it is an exercise in genre criticism, establishing the defining characteristics of films characterising authors. It is also a very specific type of genre criticism, taking a cognitivist approach that defines the author as a set of historically and socially established expectations and characteristics against which the characters in these films are measured. After establishing the phenomenological parameters and critical value of the cognitivist approach in Chapter 1,1 then take up Andrew Bennett’s outline of the author as a cultural concept, discussing its utility in dealing with films figuring authors and authorship. Chapters 3 to 8 explore a selection of the sub-genres of films containing authors, starting with characterisations of the author as a detective, then moving to films using and depicting writer’s.block, horrific characterisations of the author, characterisations of female authors, the biopic, and films characterising screenwriters in Hollywood. The work concludes with an analysis of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze’s Adaptation (2002), whose broad exploration of authorship traverses more of these sub-genres than any other film, offering an opportunity to bring together the findings of Chapters 1 to 8. I focus on English language, feature length, narrative films released between 1927 and 2007. Rather than taking a chronological approach and tracing the history of the medium’s treatment of the author, I select films from various periods, identifying in them the defining characteristics of the genre. But more than this, the genre and its characteristics represent the persistent interpretive function of the author in face of the critical trend away from biographically based interpretation towards textual and semiotic analysis.

Whilst the idealisation of extreme slenderness is widely recognised as a problematic issue, the negative portrayal of larger individuals is rarely criticised for its link with stigmatisation and problems with self-esteem. To the contrary, the representation of larger individuals in dehumanising terms – whether in news reports, advertising and research accounts – is generally regarded as a necessary means to encourage the pursuit of a ‘better’, ‘healthier’ self. However, these negative stereotypical portrayals – generally excluding the perspective and consent of those depicted – can also have adverse effects on human dignity, legitimacy and self-esteem of those thus depicted. Building on the work of fat studies scholars, as well as feminist marketing researchers, this research project seeks to contribute to the inclusion and rehumanisation of fuller-figured individuals, by involving them in the dialogue of visual and research representation. To do so, this research invited a group of fuller-figured women living in the UK and Canada, to ‘envision’, ‘model’, and ‘review’ their own self-presentations, primarily via the use of self-directed portraits, blogs, and conversations. Whilst the inclusion of their embodied perspectives is expected to contribute to humanising the representation of larger individuals – and offer a glimpse into what could be if we started considering women ‘of size’ as authors of their own depictions – it also contributes in filling a gap left by consumer researchers who have overlooked the way larger individuals make sense of their selves, bodies and well-being. As such, this research contributes to existing consumer research theories by explaining the ways individuals can envision their selves/bodies in the shadow of, but also in contrast with, the dominant marketplace promotion of slenderness. In terms of contribution, this research illustrates the relevance of therapeutic and embodied perspectives to understand the self, the body and to engage in acts of consumption. A new ‘self-nurtured’ discursive position offers challenges to the meanings generally attributed to larger individuals, and to the traditional approaches taken by consumer researchers to solve the ‘obesity crisis’. Overall, this research provides empirical, methodological and theoretical contributions to the field of consumer research. It also offers practical implications for the representation of larger individuals, and recommendations for those interested in the social marketing of health to enjoin people of all sizes in mindful acts of self-care and consumption.

The orans, although a gesture with a long ‘pagan’ past, was easily adopted by Christians for its symbolic meanings of prayer and piety and quickly attained a number of other more nuanced meanings as it was refined and reused. By restricting the scope of this thesis to the orans in the Christian catacombs of Rome, it becomes possible to approach the figure from a multi-directional perspective, not merely concerned with what the gesture meant to the Christian, but with its literary and material pedigrees, its transition to Christian art, and its cultural significance.
To this end, chapter one examines ‘pagan’ precursors of the Christian orans through an examination of coins, sculptures, inscriptions, and reliefs, as well as by looking at the two figures whose appearance most influences that of the orans – the goddess Pietas, and the Artemisia-Adorans funerary portrait type. Chapter two addresses the importance of the orans in the Christian literary community, and examines not only the actual usage of prayer with raised hands by the Christian faithful, but also examines the aesthetic and theological reasons for the popularity of the gesture – the parallel between the spread arms of the orans and the posture of the crucified Christ. Finally, chapter three presents a spatial-thematic analysis of the usage of the orans in the Roman Christian catacombs, using a corpus of 158 orantes. This chapter enables the reader to draw conclusions about the veracity of the academic theories presented in the previous chapters, as it compares the usage of the orans against its scholarly interpretation.

The author's mask is one of the most important signs of literary consciousness from antiquity to the present, it becomes a synthesis of the author's self-expression and his transformation from a "real" figure into an artistic image functioning within the text space.
The monograph examines the author's mask as one of the most important elements of the author's strategy. Russian Russian authors comprehend the place of the author's mask in the structure of the author's consciousness in the process of the formation of the institution of authorship, and also study the tradition of using the author's mask in the general context of the history of Russian literature of the XX century. based on the material of Russian prose of the XVIII-XIX centuries: M. Chulkov, V. Senkovsky, I. Krylov, A. Pushkin, N. Gogol, V. Odoevsky, V. Dahl. For the first time, the study of the process of author's self-identification and the category of the mask as a false author's identification, the nature and forms of its functioning expands ideas about the operation of the identification mechanism and about identity problems in general.

Research on interpreters as authors of autobiographies has typically focused on the interpreting activity in authoritarian regimes, in trials, or diplomacy. A great number of the author-interpreters portray a hero figure positioned in often close relationship with the person in power. This chapter deals with another kind of interpreter figure who I will call “anti-hero”. The settings explored are the Great War, the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, and Nazi concentration camps, as depicted in the interpreters’ memoirs. The chapter aims to elaborate on the main features of these anti-hero interpreters based on the framework proposed by Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson (2010), who suggest a set of concepts helpful for understanding the dynamic processes of autobiographical subjectivity, including memory, experience, or agency.

In January 2018, Masaryk University archives obtained an extensive written estate of Robert Konečný (1906–1981), an associate professor of philosophy and professor of psychology at Masaryk University, the pioneer of health-care psychology in Czechoslovakia, a poet and author, and a major figure of resistance to Nazism. Robert Konečný’s personal files, which belong among the best preserved items in the university archives, were organized and made accessible during 2018. Extensive correspondence mainly includes collections of letters from key figures of Czech literature, philosophy and psychology. A remarkable part of the estate consists of texts of Konečný’s lectures and speeches as well as documents on his educational activity in radio and television broadcasting. The files also represent a valuable source for the study of resistance to Nazism in Moravia. An extensive set of manuscripts, typescripts and prints from the fields of psychology, philosophy and literature can serve as a basis for the preparation of Konečný’s bibliography.

The contribution contains 11 unpublished letters of Jan Patočka from 1935–1967 supplemented with the author’s comments and explanations. The addressee of the letters, the nature of which is friendly and rather private, was the Brno philosopher, poet and psychologist Robert Konečný. The author devotes the introduction to the illumination of the origins of the letters and the description of the lives of both friends, whose actions, thought and unquestionable moral authority make them integral figures of the humanist tradition of Czech philosophy.

Chapter 2 considers alternative evocations of the author’s body, focusing on how and why animal-bodies in the form of taxidermied remains are deployed as surrogates for the figure of the author within the writer’s house museum. It tours Arqua, Olney, London, Philadelphia, Coxwold, and Amherst in pursuit of the stories and fantasies old and new that lie behind the celebrity of Petrarch’s cat, Cowper’s hares, Poe’s raven, Sterne’s starling, and Dickinson’s hummingbirds. It argues that these animals serve to describe the doubled body of the author, at once dead and alive, mortal and immortal, body and voice, corpse and textual corpus.

This chapter introduces an enquiry into the writer’s house museum as an idea and cultural form, arguing that it begins to emerge in the late eighteenth century as a widespread phenomenon. Starting from the working hypothesis that such museums are primarily designed to effect a figure of the author through the preservation and display of belongings within quasi-domestic space, it opens an investigation into the ways that authorial remains, possessions, and spaces came to remediate and locate the simultaneous materiality/immateriality of the author in ways that typically conceived place as national. This chapter explores escapism in fiction through the close-knit families of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series, as well as The Waltons television show. These stories were contrasted with the reality of the author's growing up in a poor subsistence dairy farm, with a father who would eventually leave his family behind. The chapter compares the restlessness of the author's father with the father figure from the Little House books. It describes the author's childhood spent moving place to place to follow her father's whims, until he later left. Life in the aftermath of abandonment is also explored, showcasing the significance of the fictional worlds the author inhabits in order to cope with the misfortunes with the real world.

As Thermoelectric devices are getting cheaper and more powerful in cooling, these devices are getting more popular for electronics cooling applications. However, due to the additional heat production inside the thermoelectric device, the application of a TE-cooler might not always be appropriate. In some applications, use of thermoelectric devices or coolers might cause higher temperature rises on heat generating electronics than conventional cooling solutions. To authors’ best knowledge, there exists no literature that studies whether thermoelectric cooling is better than traditional convective cooling without Thermoelectrics. This study aims to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of thermoelectric cooling for electronics. Two figures of merit are proposed, to compare performances of conventional and thermoelectric cooling techniques. An attempt is made to derive this figure of merit analytically with assumptions reflecting common electronics applications. Selective case studies will be presented based on constant heat flux and constant temperature difference.

This research proposes reliability evaluation for performance of biological transient mechanical stresses scenarios. This is part of a broader research done by the authors for comprehensive analysis of the biological reliability analysis [1]. A literature review is conducted in area of biomechanics phenomenological processes in order to classify the approaches for success criteria determination and reliability metrics calculation based on their merits and limitations. A limited failure mode and effect analysis is performed as a pre-processor for identification of the corresponding figure of merits. Biological environment is complex in correlated occurrence of microscopic and macroscopic phenomena. Therefore the modeling of this complex medium, in context of mechanical stresses, requires numerical solution of conservation equation and inclusion of corresponding constitution models. Determination of success criteria (first phase for reliability calculation in this research) is a challenging object, and requires consideration of several dependent figures of merits (e.g. temperature, mass and etc.). The developed success criteria matrix is based on the approaches of representation of the figures of merit. A multi-objective criteria is developed according to the phenomena occurrence in the intended study and the selected proper figure(s) of merit. The matrix determines the region of acceptance as well as the rejection area. The reliability index is proposed to estimate the probability of the success based on the calculated system performance in a non-deterministic (stochastic parameters) approach. By augmentation of developed success criteria and the system analysis calculation, a decision is made on the success and rejection of the system performance the methodology is applied to the case of cell cryopreservation phenomenon. The process of freezing in living cells is considerably more complicated than in a solution, primarily due to the presence of cellular structure. The process is considered a transient mechanical stress on the cell structure including the thermal and mass transport. The success criteria is determined based on two figures of merit of temperature and mass and their rate of change. Numerical calculation is completed for study of thermal and mass behavior for the transient of the cell. The uncertain parameters are considered random and Monte Carlo simulation is conducted for inclusion of their variation in the calculation. The situation are specified for the observation of the success criteria and occurrence of the failure.

The article discusses one of the many examples of the interaction of a word and a visual image. Given the peculiarities of the linguistic situation of the era of Peter I, the authors argue that the potential multiplicity of the image of the character Slava is due to the semantics of the name of this allegorical figure. The paired describing of Slava is probably the result of the ongoing Western European influence, offering new examples of the embodiment of this character, as well as the consequence of the development of this figure in Russian art as a satellite character.

The operation in the cluster allows merchants increase their operational efficiency, productivity, exportability and gain other benefits. The establishment of Latvian Wood Construction Cluster at the beginning of 2012 was targeted at promotion of the cooperation within the industry by developing the potential of production and export markets. The research aim is to study the changes in the economic efficiency of the merchants belonging to Latvian Wood Construction Cluster. Six Cluster members, whose economic efficiency was measured consistent with the methodology developed by the research authors, were selected for the validation or rejection of the research hypothesis and achievement of the research aim, which was advanced following the recommendation of the experts. The research results lead to the conclusion that the economic efficiency of the merchants under the study has not improved during the Cluster performance period; it has even worsened, especially for “Nordic Homes”, “HUSVIK”, “Dores fabrika” and “Cross Timber Systems”, compared with the average industry figure. Nevertheless, the net sales, operating profit and net profit of “BYKO–LAT” have increased during the Cluster performance period and the achieved results have significantly surpassed the average industry figures, the merchant’s economic efficiency did not present an improvement during the Cluster performance period due to the decline in return on assets, increase in production costs, decline in the profit to long-term capital ratio in 2017 and 2018 as well as the decrease in return on equity and commercial profitability in 2018. The authors explain the obtained research results by the fact that the Cluster activities are performed with the aim to inform on the Cluster operation, its members and wood construction; the Cluster activities are less targeted at the increase of economic efficiency.

As one of the important representative works of Chinese Modern Literature, Bian Cheng (Border Town, in English) consists of folklore of different categories which reflect the life of Chinese people seeming to live in Shangri-la. Image is ‘words to present ideas’ of an author. The images of folklore in Bian Cheng are its author’s idea on life of Chinese people. Food belongs to material folklore. It is important to present the images of food for better understanding Chinese people’s life. This descriptive study focuses on the presentation of the images related to food in Bian Cheng. The image is identified by figures of speech and tied images. The findings show that the images of food mirror Chinese life in terms of priorities on food, marriage, individual propensity for food, history and customs.

The air-lift pumping system is one of the promising method for subsea mineral lifting. It is significant to figure out the relation between water flux and injected air volume or submergence ratio. In this paper, the authors conducted the experiment to obtain basic data for vertical air-lift pumping. As the results of the experiment, the water flux increased with increasing the submergence ratio. Then the water flux increased with increasing the injected air volume up to a value. In addition, the authors calculated the solid flux using large internal diameter of pipe. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

Abstract This paper describes an innovative assessment method that provides formative feedback on the effectiveness of an engineering textbook. We describe the development of the Text Learning Capture Method and the prior art that it is drawn from. We then go on to interpret and analyze the protocols captured with the method and describe the preliminary results generated with its application. Concrete examples of how the feedback enables us to identify the text’s readability, comprehensibility, and usability are given. From the analysis a list of questions was generated about how students learn from engineering textbooks. The textbook assessment work presented here was motivated by a desire on the part of the author of the textbook (hereafter the text-author in contrast to the authors of this paper) to understand more fully the role of this textbook in supporting student learning. We began with questions such as: “Do students relate to the real-world examples given?”; “How do students work through the equations?”; “How are figures utilized?”; “Are students excited by a textbook that uses a familiar multi-faceted artifact to demonstrate engineering principles?”. In our attempts to carefully answer these questions we generated questions such as: “Can learning from a text book be thought of as passive?”; “What constitutes effective learning from texts?”; “What are best reading practices?”; and “How much control does an author have over this?”.

Abstract As the Internet of Things, smart factories and autonomous driving increase the demand for low-price radar sensors, the authors address this need by developing a 24 GHz short range radar in standard bulk silicon CMOS technology for mass market production. CMOS technology enables cost reduction and efficient system integration compared to former GaAs and current SiGe solutions. Design for failure analysis (DFFA) is implemented in the low-noise amplifier (LNA) of the radar to identify and compensate process deviations. It consists of scalable capacitor structures and is executed using focused ion beam circuit edit. By doing so, the design specifications of high gain and low noise of the LNA are reliably met at high yield for the desired operating frequency. The presented DFFA method enables a shift in peak gain by 2.5 GHz. It thereby improves gain and noise figure at 24 GHz by 2 dB and -0.2 dB respectively. The resulting optimized LNA achieves a gain of 20 dB and a noise figure of 3.7 dB matching and surpassing other state-of-the-art works in a single prototyping run.

Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) have a number of attractive properties for use in photonic switches. SOAs offer nanosecond switching times, extinction ratios in excess of 40 dB, and small signal gains of approximately 15 dB. In addition they can be monolithically integrated, and thus can potentially be fabricated in volume and used in large switch matrices. Here we report on our recent demonstration of an 8×8 optical crossbar switch based upon discrete SOAs. Other authors [1-3] have reported on SOA-based optical switches at the device level. Our work focuses on the demonstration of the technology at the system level. This demonstration is a significant step towards the widespread use of SOA-based optical switches because it provides a testbed for exploring and identifying the relationships between device parameters and system performance requirements. A block diagram of the optical crossbar switch is shown in Figure 1. The switch is constructed in a modular fashion and consists of optical, digital, analog, and computer modules. Figure 2 shows two photographs of the completed optical crossbar switch.

The article analyzes the media discourse around the figure of Oriana Fallachi and her journalistic work during 2017-2020. The actual media image of the figure of Fallachi is highlighted, examples of positive and negative statements are given. It is substantiated why her journalism should be researched in various ways, taking into account other aspects of her work that are not related to Islamophobia. The subject of the study is critical texts in modern foreign media dedicated to the author’s work. The objective of the study is to outline the media discourse around the figure of Oriana Fallaci and her journalism during 2017-2020. The methodology. The following methods have been used in the process of scientific research: historical, comparative, systems analysis, content synthesis, and others. The main results. In total, we have analyzed eight materials in foreign publications, published over the past 3 years, as well as the two most famous biographies of Oriana Fallaci. Some of the most recent reviewed texts have been published in the last few months, reflecting the interest in the author’s journalism, her writing, and reporting. Therefore, we see the need for further tracking and analysis of this body of texts. Conclusions. Critics of Fallaci express polar views that are not all negative. Authors recommend quite cautiously her texts for reading, emphasizing their positive aspects. Both Fallaci’s biographies are also not entirely complementary: some aspects of her work are glorified, others are condemned. We managed to find general tendencies in the criticism of Oriana Fallaci’s journalism. These include accusations of xenophobia and Islamophobia, uncompromisingness, lack of political correctness, and moral value. The authors emphasize, at the same time, the openness and directness that bribe the reader, patriotism and honesty, strength of spirit and firmness of position. Significance of the research. The analysis of the latest criticism reveals what kind of media image Fallachi’s figure has today, and gives the possibility to research it for demonization and one-sided coverage. This is important not only for thorough research of the author’s work but also for understanding how the modern world perceives journalism, which is contrary to the generally accepted principles of political correctness, journalistic ethics, and humanity.

The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.

What is a ‘science superpower’? Sarah Main and Graeme Reid explore reactions to the term from stakeholders across the UK and examine alternative versions of a future in which ‘science superpower’ status is achieved. Their report is published today by the Foundation for Science and Technology. Jeremy Hunt, Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson, George Freeman and other senior figures in government use the phrase ‘science superpower’ as a headline for ambitious, visionary science policy. It is a potent phrase but open to varied interpretation. By exploring scenarios in which the UK has achieved ‘science superpower’ status by different means, the authors stimulate debate about the desired characteristics of this status and highlight the choices facing policy-makers on the path to become a more research-intensive UK.

The article’s subject – journalism of Ukrainian authors in diaspora publications on the topic of the dissident movement in soviet Ukraine. Trends of diaspora environment’s perception of variations and forms of Ukrainian intelligentsia and public figures’ resistance to totalitarian system in 1960-1980 are emphasized in the article. The diaspora journalists’ attitude to dissident movement’s tasks and perspectives in Ukraine are considered in the article, as well as disagreements in evaluation of perspectives of Ukrainian statehood’s restoration are stated. Two diaspora views’ polemics are emphasized: one of them strongly did not perceive peaceful methods of resistance to soviet system, the other – claimed that Ukrainians in Ukraine have a right to choose the methods and ways of fight for restoration of independency themselves. The practical achievements of such polemics are emphasized in the summary. Key words: diaspora; diaspora publications; journalism; dissident movement; liberation struggle.

This report synthesizes discussions from a scoping meeting for Redwood National and State Parks (referred to as the “parks” throughout this report) held in 2004 and a follow-up conference call in 2019. Two GRI–compiled GIS data sets of the geology and geohazards of the parks are the principal deliverables of the GRI. The GRI GIS data are available on the GRI publications website http://go.nps.gov/gripubs and through the NPS Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) portal https://irma.nps.gov/App/Portal/Home. Enter “GRI” as the search text and select a park from the unit list. Writing of this report was based on those data and the interpretations of the source map authors (see “GRI Products” and “Acknowledgements”). A geologic map poster illustrates the geology GRI GIS data set and serves as a primary figure for this GRI report. No poster was prepared for the geohazards GRI GIS data set. Additionally, figure 7 of this report illustrates the locations of the major geologic features in the parks. Unlike the poster, which is divided into a northern and southern portion to show detail while accommodating the parks’ length, figure 7 is a single-page, simplified map. The features labeled on figure 7 are discussed in the “Geologic History, Features, and Processes” chapter. To provide a context of geologic time, this report includes a geologic time scale (see "Geologic History, Features, and Processes"). The parks’ geologic story encompasses 200 million years, starting in the Jurassic Period. Following geologic practice, the time scale is set up like a stratigraphic column, with the oldest units at the bottom and the youngest units at the top. Organized in this manner, the geologic time scale table shows the relative ages of the rock units that underlie the parks and the unconsolidated deposits that lie at the surface. Reading the “Geologic Event” column in the table, from bottom to top, will provide a chronologic order of the parks’ geologic history. The time scale includes only the map units within the parks that also appear on the geologic map poster; that is, map units of the geohazards data are not included. Geology is a complex science with many specialized terms. This report provides definitions of geologic terms at first mention, typically in parentheses following the term. Geologic units in the GRI GIS data are referenced in this report using map unit symbols; for example, map unit KJfrc stands for the Cretaceous (K) and Jurassic (J) Franciscan Complex (f), Redwood Creek schist (rc), which underlies a portion of the Redwood Creek watershed (see “GRI Products”).

This blog post examines how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has impacted the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia in southern Moldova. The author argues that the Moldovan government’s sharp condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its move toward the European Union has caused tensions with the Gagauz minority. Furthermore, the text highlights how since the beginning of the invasion, Gagauzia’s regional authorities, as well as the general population, have resisted efforts by the Moldovan government to limit Russian influence in the region. It also shows how dissatisfaction with the policies of the current government, combined with an economic crisis and a prolonged drought, have led to political infighting within Gagauzia, and the rise of certain pro-Russian figures who employ radical language reminiscent of the late-Soviet period

The authors explored the activity of mass media and cultural organizations aimed at clarification of the current problematic issue – preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage under the conditions of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine. The authors emphasize that occupants not only destroy historic buildings, i.e. material objects, but also steal art values, destroy library and archive funds; their actions are aimed at destruction of our spirituality, identity and history. It is pointed out that there are the main streams in the work of journalists, experts, and culture figures, namely: fixation of losses, propaganda of the Ukrainian culture in the world, expert evaluation of the restitution possibilities, and filling of the culture material with patriotic sense. The full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine on the 24th of February 2022 led to the numerous loss of life, ruination of the military, civil and infrastructure objects. But the state-aggressor destroys and robs our culture in this war. Since the beginning of the war mass media have been actively informing about the situation in the regions, which happened to be at the line of the Russian troops attack. The information was in particular about the fact that different educational establishments, libraries and their funds, museums with valuable collections, theatres, religious buildings and historic buildings had been ruined. To tell the truth the information was incomplete due to the limited opportunities to monitor the situation. However, later it has been systematized. The work of journalists and experts contributed to this since they stated the criminal acts of Russia, informing about the ruination facts of historic, sacral, cultural monuments, devastation of many museum collections, destruction of library and archive funds. Digitalization of the Russian war crimes against Ukrainian culture became one more important work aimed at preservation of the Ukrainian cultural heritage. It was done by means of interactive maps of the Ukrainian cultural losses and it enables documenting crimes of the occupant army and spreading this information at the international level. The article investigates functional techniques of extralinguistic expression in multimedia texts; the effectiveness of figurative expressions as a reaction to modern events in Ukraine and their influence on the formation of public opinion is shown. Publications of journalists, broadcasts of media resonators, experts, public figures, politicians, readers are analyzed. The language of the media plays a key role in shaping the worldview of the young political elite in the first place. The essence of each statement is a focused thought that reacts to events in the world or in one’s own country. The most popular platform for mass information and social interaction is, first of all, network journalism, which is characterized by mobility and unlimited time and space. Authors have complete freedom to express their views in direct language, including their own word formation. Phonetic, lexical, phraseological and stylistic means of speech create expression of the text. A figurative word, a good aphorism or proverb, a paraphrased expression, etc. enhance the effectiveness of a multimedia text. This is especially important for headlines that simultaneously inform and influence the views of millions of readers. Given the wide range of issues raised by the Internet as a medium, research in this area is interdisciplinary. The science of information, combining language and social communication, is at the forefront of global interactions. The Internet is an effective source of knowledge and a forum for free thought. Nonlinear texts (hypertexts) – «branching texts or texts that perform actions on request», multimedia texts change the principles of information collection, storage and dissemination, involving billions of readers in the discussion of global issues. Mastering the word is not an easy task if the author of the publication is not well-read, is not deep in the topic, does not know the psychology of the audience for which he writes. Therefore, the study of media broadcasting is an important component of the professional training of future journalists. The functions of the language of the media require the authors to make the right statements and convincing arguments in the text. Journalism education is not only knowledge of imperative and dispositive norms, but also apodictic ones. In practice, this means that there are rules in media creativity that are based on logical necessity. Apodicticity is the first sign of impressive language on the platform of print or electronic media. Social expression is a combination of creative abilities and linguistic competencies that a journalist realizes in his activity. Creative self-expression is realized in a set of many important factors in the media: the choice of topic, convincing arguments, logical presentation of ideas and deep philological education. Linguistic art, in contrast to painting, music, sculpture, accumulates all visual, auditory, tactile and empathic sensations in a universal sign – the word. The choice of the word for the reproduction of sensory and semantic meanings, its competent use in the appropriate context distinguishes the journalist-intellectual from other participants in forums, round tables, analytical or entertainment programs. Expressive speech in the media is a product of the intellect (ability to think) of all those who write on socio-political or economic topics. In the same plane with him – intelligence (awareness, prudence), the first sign of which (according to Ivan Ogienko) is a good knowledge of the language. Intellectual language is an important means of organizing a journalistic text. It, on the one hand, logically conveys the author’s thoughts, and on the other – encourages the reader to reflect and comprehend what is read. The richness of language is accumulated through continuous self-education and interesting communication. Studies of social expression as an important factor influencing the formation of public consciousness should open up new facets of rational and emotional media broadcasting; to trace physical and psychological reactions to communicative mimicry in the media. Speech mimicry as one of the methods of disguise is increasingly becoming a dangerous factor in manipulating the media. Mimicry is an unprincipled adaptation to the surrounding social conditions; one of the most famous examples of an animal characterized by mimicry (change of protective color and shape) is a chameleon. In a figurative sense, chameleons are called adaptive journalists. Observations show that mimicry in politics is to some extent a kind of game that, like every game, is always conditional and artificial.

У статті визначено основні підходи до проблеми психологічної сепарації, описано її специфіку в пізній юності та ранній дорослості, окреслено її складові, зокрема функціональну, емоційну, конфліктну та аттитюдну незалежності. Доведено, що на процес сепарації мають вплив особливості функціонування батьківської родини. На функціональну, емоційну та аттитюдну незалежність від матері в більшій мірі мають вплив гнучкість та згуртованість батьківської сім'ї, тоді як на сепарацію від батька (емоційна та аттитюдна незалежність) – лише згуртованість. Експериментально виявлено достовірні відмінності у дівчат-студенток між усіма компонентами сепарації від матері та батька: дівчата є більш залежними від фігури матері. This article deals with analyzing the features of psychological separation in late adolescence and early adulthood. The author outlines the components of psychological separation. It is proved that peculiarities of the parental family affect the process of separation. The flexibility and cohesion of the parental family influence functional, emotional and attitudinal independence from a mother. While just flexibility affects separation from a father (means attitudinal and emotional independence). Conflictual independence from a mother does not relate to the peculiarities of the functioning of the parental family. Conflictual independence from a father has a connection with the cohesion of the family system, including the common parameters of time what family is spending together and emotional connection. It was experimentally proved women students have the significant differences among all the components of the separation from mother and father. Girls mostly depend on the mother figure.

This scientific article studies natural history documentaries produced by BBC and traces important stages of the development of the attitude towards such genre as natural history documentary. This research is about understanding why this kind of programmes is important, particularly for Ukrainians, and why we should study the genre thoroughly, including the BBC’s experience in the field. Accordingly, the main objectives of the study were: 1. To substantiate the necessity for Ukrainian scholars to study natural history documentaries and BBC’s experience in the field. 2. To trace back and describe the main stages of development in the sphere of producing natural history documentaries by British Broadcasting Corporation. 3. To analyze the obstacles which modern journalists, filmmakers are dealing with and to draw attention of Ukrainian specialists to those philosophical questions that modern era is searching for answers to. In the result of the research these main tasks which were outlined above were fulfilled. The author of this article concluded that natural history documentaries help to understand our place in the world we live in. In addition, through the shared environment we can feel unity with those who inhabit our region, country, inhabited it before, will inhabit in future. Documentaries help us understand who we are. And this function of identification is very important for contemporary Ukraine. To understand how to create proper natural history documentary it’s important to learn the global history of creating such programmes and especially that part which covers BBC’s achievements. The achievements of the corporation which gave birth to such prominent figure as David Attenborough. In addition to this, the article described some modern challenges which documentary makers face and those questions which contemporary society needs to have answered. Because you cannot create a proper natural history programme if you know past but do not know modern challenges. To sum up, the topic which is deeply connected with process of self-identification is very important and perspective for Ukrainian society which suffers hybrid war and endeavours of Russian Federation to assimilate Ukrainian people, Ukrainian culture.
