Résumé :
PCs have become a widespread technical tool in foreign language training (FLT), comparable to language labs or video recorders. Authoring programs enable the creation of learning programs, tailored to the specific needs of a certain group of learners and -- of the greatest benefit -- they can be made by the teacher. A typology of authoring programs in CALL with their different features (reconstruction, rearrangement, matching, transformation, multiple choice, vocabulary data bank, simulation) will be presented. Examples from widespread authoring programs demonstrate the teacher's programming effort and various screen presentation methods. An overview of programming possibilities shows the general potential of authoring programs. A catalog of requirements of teaching/learning-software helps to evaluate technical performance and efficiency.

Résumé :
<p>The Mango Suite is a set of three freely downloadable cross-platform authoring programs for flexible network-based CALL exercises. They are Adobe Air applications, so they can be used on Windows, Macintosh, or Linux computers, provided the freely-available Adobe Air has been installed on the computer. The exercises which the programs generate are all Adobe Flash based. The three programs are: (1) Mango-multi, which constructs multiple-choice exercises with an optional sound and/or image; (2) Mango-match, which is for word/phrase matching exercises, and has an added feature intended to promote memorization, whereby an item must be matched correctly not once but an optional consecutive number of times; (3) Mango-gap, which produces seamless gap filling exercises, where the gaps can be as small as desired, down to the level of individual letters, and correction feedback is similarly detailed. Sounds may also be inserted at any desired points within the text, so that it is suitable for listening or dictation exercises. Each exercise generated by any of the programs is produced in the form of a folder containing all of the necessary files for immediate upload and deployment (except that if sound files are used in a Mango-gap exercise, they must be copied to the folder manually). The html file in which the flash exercise is embedded may be edited in any way to suit the user, and an xml file controlling the appearance of the exercise itself may be edited through a wysiwyg interface in the authoring program. The programs aim to combine ease of use with features not available in other authoring programs, toprovide a useful teaching and research tool.</p>

Résumé :
Promoting creative thinking in children has been an issue of critical importance to educators. Research shows that appropriate uses of computer programs such as word processing, computer imaging, and Logo programming have the potential to enhance children's creativity. Little is known, however, about the impact of hypermedia technology on children's creative thinking. This study examined whether engaging elementary school students in hypermedia authoring would promote their creative thinking. It was found that after engaging in an extended period of hypermedia authoring, the fourth graders increased their creativity scores in a number of areas. The low and intermediate ability students appeared to benefit from the hypermedia authoring environment more than the high ability students and working collaboratively on the hypermedia authoring projects enabled students to demonstrate higher creativity scores than when working individually. The findings are consistent with research on hypermedia and creativity with Logo in showing that by offering a new dimension for expressing thoughts and encouraging novel ways of presentation, hypermedia authoring is another way to facilitate children's cognitive development and promote their motivation toward learning.

Résumé :
The growth and popularization of platforms on scientific production has been the subject of several studies, producing relevant analyses of co-authorship behavior among groups of researchers. Researchers and their scientific productions can be analysed as co-authorship social networks, so researchers are linked through common publications. In this context, co-authoring networks can be analysed to find patterns that can describe or characterize them. This work presents the analysis and characterization of co-authorship networks of academic Brazilian graduate programs in computer science. Data from Brazilian researchers were collected and modeled as co-authoring networks among the graduate programs that researchers take part in. Each network topology was analysed with complex network measurements and three proposed qualitative indices that evaluate the publication’s quality. In addition, the co-authorship networks of the computer science graduate programs were characterized in relation to the assessment received by CAPES, which attributes a qualitative grade to the graduate programs in Brazil. The results show the most relevant topological measurements for the program’s characterization and the evaluations received by the programs in different qualitative degrees, relating the main topological patterns of the co-authorship networks and the CAPES grades of the Brazilian graduate programs in computer science.

Résumé :
Critical annotations are important knowledge sources when researching one’s oeuvre. They describe literary, historical, cultural, linguistic and other kinds of information written in natural languages. Acquiring knowledge from these notes is a complex task due to the limited natural language understanding capability of computerized tools. The aim of the research was to extract knowledge from existing annotations, and to develop new authoring methods to facilitate the knowledge acquisition. After structural and semantic analysis of critical annotations, authors developed a software tool that transforms existing annotations into a structured form that encodes referral and factual knowledge. Authors also propose a new method for authoring annotations based on controlled natural languages. This method ensures that annotations are semantically processable by computer programs and the authoring process remains simple for non-technical users.

Michel, Élie. « Interactive authoring of 3D shapes represented as programs ». Electronic Thesis or Diss., Institut polytechnique de Paris, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022IPPAT027.

Although hardware and techniques have considerably improved over the years at handling heavy content, digital 3D creation remains fairly complex, partly because the bottleneck also lies in the cognitive load imposed over the designers. A recent shift to higher-order representation of shapes, encoding them as computer programs that generate their geometry, enables creation pipelines that better manage the cognitive load, but this also comes with its own sources of friction. We study in this thesis new challenges and opportunities introduced by program-based representations of 3D shapes in the context of digital content authoring. We investigate ways for the interaction with the shapes to remain as much as possible in 3D space, rather than operating on abstract symbols in program space. This includes both assisting the creation of the program, by allowing manipulation in 3D space while still ensuring a good generalization upon changes of the free variables of the program, and helping one to tune these variables by enabling direct manipulation of the output of the program. We explore diversity of program-based representations, focusing various paradigms of visual programming interfaces, from the imperative directed acyclic graphs (DAG) to the declarative Wang tiles, through more hybrid approaches. In all cases we study shape programs that evaluate at interactive rate, so that they fit in a creation process, and we push this by studying synergies of program-based representations with real time rendering pipelines. We enable the use of direct manipulation methods on DAG output thanks to automated rewriting rules and a non-linear filtering of differential data. We help the creation of imperative shape programs by turning geometric selection into semantic queries and of declarative programs by proposing an interface-first editing scheme for authoring 3D content in Wang tiles. We extend tiling engines to handle continuous tile parameters and arbitrary slot graphs, and to suggest new tiles to add to the set. We blend shape programs into the visual feedback loop by delegating tile content evaluation to the real-time rendering pipeline or exploiting the program's semantics to drive an impostor-based level-of-details system. Overall, our series of contributions aims at leveraging program-based representations of shapes to make the process of authoring 3D digital scenes more of an artistic act and less of a technical task

Résumé :
The past half-decade has seen progress in methodology and reusable components available to designers of music authoring tools. This thesis examines currently prevalent architectures for music making software and applies currently available technical means to update design methodology and architectural patterns for the next-generation of tools. It aims to map the various categories of advances and the manner in which they relate to each other, to the problem of building these tools. The focus is on conceptualization. The thesis aims to understand, from historical perspectives, as well as from perspectives provided by other domains, the fundamental problems encountered in the process of designing authoring tools.
Issues examined include building rich visual and interactive interfaces for authoring, the use of multiple notations and formalisms to describe multiple aspects of musical structure, end-user extensibility and end-user script ability. The results of design experiments implementing core ideas are documented, and the manner in which the ideas from these prototypes may be applied to the construction of real-world tools is discussed. As far as possible, the thesis investigates existing tools, frameworks, design ideas, and architectural possibilities that scale. In conclusion, the manner in which the investigation relates to the future of authoring tools, and to problems faced by contemporary artists and tool-makers is discussed.

Résumé :
In a 20-year period, AR has gone from being viewed as a heavyweight technology to a new medium for a variety of applications. As a result there has been an increasing need for tools to support AR design and development that fully address the needs of non-technologists. From my AR research, I learned that three critical components for these authoring tools are support for an established content pipeline, rapid prototyping, and user experience testing. The history of media teaches us that AR also shares underlying technologies with a variety of more mature media such as film, VR, and the web with existing workflows and tools. Therefore, we created an AR authoring tool that supported these three critical components, and whose design was informed by established approaches in these related domains, allowing developers with a range of technical expertise to explore the AR medium. In this dissertation I present four main contributions. The first was an exploration of the AR design space focused on close collaboration with designers. This work resulted in guidelines for AR authoring tools, and informed the development of the Designer's Augmented Reality Toolkit (DART). These guidelines were validated via internal and external projects. A qualitative study of long term DART use that provided insight into the successes and failures of DART as well as additional understanding of AR authoring needs. Lastly, I trace two main threads to highlight the impact of this work, the development of the AR Second Life system and the creation of the Argon AR web browser.

Résumé :
The attention directed toward computer software research has been sparse which is quite evident in particular facets such as learning methods, specifically towards tutorials. Some authors have identified various important issues which include cognitive factors, reduction of presentation of superfluous information, and the importance of interaction with software and hardware. The present . study examined two tutorials which were similar except in their level of required user behaviors. Tutorial A required only user manipulation of disk stored data. Tutorial B required the user to enter the data into the computer, design the screen format, and then to manipulate it. It was predicted that the extra task of entering data and designing the screen format would provoke more positive scores for Tutorial B as measured by two independent questionnaires, would require fewer requests for assistance than for those using Tutorial A, and require a comparative duration period to complete. The results obtained supported all hypotheses except for the duration period which took longer for Tutorial B. The implication is that there should be development of improved Tutorial options utilizing research based methods such as these presented.

Mehta, Manish. « Construction and adaptation of AI behaviors in computer games ». Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/42724.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Computer games are an increasingly popular application for Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, and conversely AI is an increasingly popular selling point for commercial digital games. AI for non playing characters (NPC) in computer games tends to come from people with computing skills well beyond the average user. The prime reason behind the lack of involvement of novice users in creating AI behaviors for NPC's in computer games is that construction of high quality AI behaviors is a hard problem. There are two reasons for it. First, creating a set of AI behavior requires specialized skills in design and programming. The nature of the process restricts it to certain individuals who have a certain expertise in this area. There is little understanding of how the behavior authoring process can be simplified with easy-to-use authoring environments so that novice users (without programming and design experience) can carry out the behavior authoring task. Second, the constructed AI behaviors have problems and bugs in them which cause a break in player expe- rience when the problematic behaviors repeatedly fail. It is harder for novice users to identify, modify and correct problems with the authored behavior sets as they do not have the necessary debugging and design experience. The two issues give rise to a couple of interesting questions that need to be investigated: a) How can the AI behavior construction process be simplified so that a novice user (without program- ming and design experience) can easily conduct the authoring activity and b) How can the novice users be supported to help them identify and correct problems with the authored behavior sets? In this thesis, I explore the issues related to the problems highlighted and propose a solution to them within an application domain, named Second Mind(SM). In SM novice users who do not have expertise in computer programming employ an authoring interface to design behaviors for intelligent virtual characters performing a service in a virtual world. These services range from shopkeepers to museum hosts. The constructed behaviors are further repaired using an AI based approach. To evaluate the construction and repair approach, we conduct experiments with human subjects. Based on developing and evaluating the solution, I claim that a design solution with behavior timeline based interaction design approach for behavior construction supported by an understandable vocabulary and reduced feature representation for- malism enables novice users to author AI behaviors in an easy and understandable manner for NPCs performing a service in a virtual world. I further claim that an introspective reasoning approach based on comparison of successful and unsuccessful execution traces can be used as a means to successfully identify breaks in player ex- perience and modify the failures to improve the experience of the player interacting with NPCs performing a service in a virtual world. The work contributes in the following three ways by providing: 1) a novel introspective reasoning approach for successfully detecting and repairing failures in AI behaviors for NPCs performing a service in a virtual world.; 2) a novice user understandable authoring environment to help them create AI behaviors for NPCs performing a service in a virtual world in an easy and understandable manner; and 3) Design, debugging and testing scaffolding to help novice users modify their authored AI behaviors and achieve higher quality modified AI behaviors compared to their original unmodified behaviors.

Résumé :
Thesis (M. A. (Social Work)) -- University of Limpopo, 2016
This dissertation on the Evaluation of an Employee Assistance Programme determines the worth or value of the programme by assessing its effectiveness or ineffectiveness. It also seeks to determine if the target population was reached. This study evaluates the level of EAP awareness and utilization by prosecutors. It also focuses on the effectiveness of the programme in addressing their work and personal challenges. It further seeks to understand the level of referring prosecutors to the EAP by their supervisors. The study is evaluative in design and is based on evaluation theory. The population of the study comprises 31 prosecutors from all three Magistrate complexes within Capricorn District (Limpopo Province), namely, Mankweng, Polokwane and Seshego. The total number of prosecutors reached is 31. Data were collected through questionnaires from all the respondents. The study collected information on absenteeism, sick leave and disciplinary matters in order to measure EAP utilisation before and after the programme was introduced to employees. The wish was not successful because the Human Resources system utilised within the NPA did not capture such information as anticipated. The main findings of the study are that prosecutors are aware of the Employee Assistance Programme and most respondents who used the EAP referred themselves. It is clear that prosecutors are aware of the benefits obtained from the programme. Even though a large number of prosecutors were aware of the existence as well as the services offered by the EAP within the NPA, the utilisation rate of the programme was low. The other major finding is that the EAP within the NPA is underutilised. Lastly, the EAP within the NPA in Capricorn District, Limpopo Province is not effective in addressing prosecutors’ work and personal problems.

Résumé :
AbstractLong-term policy developments can be shaped by social groups of policy actors and policy programs. This observation has made the Programmatic Action Framework (PAF) the starting point of a relatively new perspective that provides a complementary view on policy processes. It assumes that, based on shared biographical intersections, policy actors coalesce around a policy program to achieve policy change in order to advance their own authority and careers in a policy area. Meanwhile, the perspective of programmatic action has been successfully applied to other contexts, yet so far without a systematic reflection on the institutional preconditions necessary for programmatic action to take place. Programmatic groups and programs are essentially shaped by institutions. A systematic evaluation of these institutions is important, especially when one wants to apply the perspective in different countries and at different times. Based on in-depth comparative case studies, this book explores the question of what institutions are necessary for the formation and success of groups.

Résumé :
Service innovation represents a challenge that has to be supported by specific actions of the higher education professionals. At European level, it was promoted by platforms developed under the Europe INNOVA and other initiatives, and it is now an important priority of the Europe 2020 strategy. Therefore, the academic environment should get aligned to this trend and prepare students for the complex character of the future service systems. This paper presents best practices and platforms to support an action program for getting aligned to the European trends in service innovation, undertaken within the ESF / POSDRU project INSEED (Strategic Program for promoting Innovation in Services by Open and Continuous Education). The program has five main objectives: A. Aligning university actions to the European strategy; B. Contributing to the activity of professional organizations and scientific communities at international level; C. Collaboration with European researchers on the topic of innovative services; D. Sustaining joint educational programs and curriculum in the domain of services, in correlation with European partners; E. Using the INSER@SPACE collaborative platform for promoting virtual educational resources and knowledge regarding the service science. Each objective is described by its specific actions and by a presentation of the applied practices, like: comprehending the strategies, programs and organisms related to the European Commission; analyzing the knowledge gaps; co-authoring articles with experts from European universities with common research interests; organizing scientific events in the domain of services; certifying undergraduate and postgraduate educational programs dedicated to sector services. An important example is the Service Engineering Master (SEM) from the Automation and Computer Science Faculty, University Politehnica of Bucharest, and its relation to other programs on service science, from Austria, Belgium, Portugal, Ireland, Germany and Czech Republic. The master is linked through a double degree agreement, with the Master in Service Engineering and Management (MESG) from the Faculty of Engineering -FEUP, University of Porto. The two programs complement each other, as SEM is IT-oriented and MESG is business-oriented. The paper compares them, based on their common elements and their particular contributions. As support for creating a global educational environment, we also present the INSER@SPACE collaborative platform developed by INSEED, with its three components: (i) a learning management system dedicated to educational courses concerning services; (ii) a semantic wiki on service science for creating an international community based on a clearly defined knowledge environment; (iii) educational resources provided as a service, with configurations dedicated to learning new technologies for service innovation.

Résumé :
Graduate employability has been a topic of interest to governments, training institutions, industry and graduates. In 2009 Botswana Training Authority (BOTA) identified a gap in the market of the lack of training skills among the trainers for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). To close the gap, BOTA developed the unit standards for the training of trainers programme. The Botswana Open University (BOU) together with other higher education institutions adopted this program in 2016 and offered the training to the in-service as well as prospective trainers. The program is offered for a duration of 6 months. The study employed the qualitative research approach, which consisted of unstructured interviews to explore the perceptions of the employability of CVET graduates and their incorporation of employability skills acquired from the programme. A purposive sample of 20 graduates from five regional campuses were interviewed, premised on the overarching question: To what extent does CVET improve on the employability of its graduates? The findings of the study show that the CVET program is not only one of the popular short programs but its graduates are also employable.

Résumé :
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) partnered with a Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) research team and San José State University (SJSU) students for assistance in developing the equity framework for the agency’s proposed Equitable Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Mitigation Program. The goal of the program is to reduce the amount of driving generated from new developments in Santa Clara County through transportation solutions with equity and cross-jurisdictional collaboration in mind. During the Fall 2023 semester, graduate urban planning students from SJSU worked to develop policy recommendations for the program equity framework through a literature review, spatial analysis, community engagement observations, and stakeholder interviews. This report summarizes and builds upon student contributions to present a set of equity-focused recommendations for VTA to consider for program development, implementation, and evaluation. Notable strategies identified for developing the framework include defining VMT equity with local relevance, creating an accountability plan, and embedding equity into key decision-making points. Additionally, a transportation challenge frequently mentioned by stakeholders was a need for improved transit availability, frequency, reliability, and speed. Major recommendations discussed in the report include developing and adopting a localized definition of VMT equity, developing an informative and implementable accountability plan, embedding equity measures into project prioritization and evaluation processes, and prioritizing improvements to public transit. Lessons learned can help other jurisdictions develop and implement equitable VMT mitigation programs and effective community engagement processes. Additionally, the report provides an overview of the factors that go into program development, which can help readers better understand this process and identify areas where they can get involved.

Résumé :
As they increasingly adopt digital infrastructure, public administrations worldwide are increasingly collecting, generating and managing data. Empirical researchers are, at the same time, collaborating more and more with administrations, accessing vast amounts of data, and setting new research agendas. These collaborations have taken place in low-income countries in particular, where administrative data can be a valuable substitute for scarce survey data. However, the transition to a full-fledged digital administration can be a long and difficult process, sharply contrasting the common leap-frog narrative. Based on observations made during a five-year research collaboration with the Senegalese tax administration, this qualitative case study discusses the main data management challenges the tax administration faces. Much progress has recently been made with the modernisation of the administration’s digital capacity ,and adoption of e-filling and e-payment systems. However, there remains substantial scope for the administration to enhance data management and improve its efficiency in performing basic tasks, such as the identification of active taxpayers or the detection of various forms of non-compliance. In particular, there needs to be sustained investment in human resources specifically trained in data analysis. Recently progress has been made through creating – in collaboration with the researchers – a ‘datalab’ that now works to improve processes to collect, clean, merge and use data to improve revenue mobilisation.

Wozniak-Brown, Joanna. Gaps and Opportunities for Local Resilience Planning in Connecticut. UConn Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaptation, septembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.56576/wxnj9369.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
There are numerous efforts underway at the local, regional, and state level across the state of Connecticut to address the impacts of climate change. Scientific assessments, community engagement, and adaptation project designs are just a few of the key activities. Additionally, climate-related goals are being integrated into some local planning processes and some municipalities have undertaken resilience plans. Despite these projects, there are glaring gaps in the existing authority or obligations of local governments that potentially hinder climate planning at the local level. This type of systems analysis highlights specific planning obligations that are often related to climate planning but have not yet incorporated the impacts and adaptations to climate change fully. However, optimizing or expanding existing local authority or planning obligations could significantly advance adaptation across the state. Firstly, it would make climate planning an ongoing effort as opposed to episodic. Secondly, it could address gaps that have the potential to hinder projects currently underway. Thirdly, it could advance efforts to address historically excluded and harmed communities across the state by ensuring they are included in climate change planning and that adaptation projects or resilience programs and policies redress those inequities. This white paper outlines the gaps in resilience planning authority and planning mechanisms then provides potential opportunities to address the gaps.
