This research paper is written in a first-person narrative style. The style mirrors the practice-led research methodology I have used which privileges process over resolution and acknowledges that making can be both generative and interrogative. More traditional research methods rely on distancing the researcher from production and placing them within an external framework. Practice-led researchers “construct experiential starting points from which practice follows. They tend to ‘dive in’, to commence practising to see what emerges. Uric acid is a nitrogenous compound that is produced as an end product of the deamination of amino acids. Many insects and all reptiles and birds excrete the majority of excess nitrogen as solid uric acid granules that are suspended in the urine. However, the solid uric acid is not in crystalline form, but is packaged into small, spherical structures that are usually 3 - 15 μm in diameter. Further, the uric acid that is dissolved in the urine exceeds its aqueous solubility limit and the solubility limits of the potassium and sodium urate salts. Thus, a factor(s) in the urine is facilitating ur

Most emerging diseases are of zoonotic origin. Globalization and intensive animal farming has led to an increased spread of zoonotic infections and it is therefore of crucial importance to be prepared in managing potential outbreaks. Influenza type A virus is cause of a zoonotic disease, which can affect animal and human health. A number of influenza virus subtypes have successfully crossed the species barrier and have established in mammal and human populations, causing yearly seasonal epidemics. The influenza A viruses of the H9N2 subtype are classified as low pathogenic avian influenza (AI)

Several species of Neotropical migrant songbirds are experiencing declining population numbers. One of many proposed reasons for these declines is the dramatic loss of suitable prairie and grassland nesting habitat in the central United States. The Konza Prairie - a native tallgrass prairie preserve in central Kansas - was used to study possible edge-effect predation of artificial avian ground nests. Two Japanese quail eggs were placed in created artificial nests along transect lines from a wooded edge, a recently burned edge, and a control area. The rate of nest predation after seven days was

In 1997, the first human case of avian influenza infection was reported in Hong Kong. Since then, avian influenza has become more and more hazardous for both animal and human health. Scientists believed that it would not take long until the virus mutates to become contagious from human to human. In this thesis, we construct avian influenza with possible mutation situations in bird-human systems. Also, possible control measures for humans are introduced in the systems. We compare the analytical and numerical results and try to find the most efficient control measures to prevent the disease.

Microbial infection of eggs was originally investigated in terms of human health only. Microbial infection of eggs is more likely to occur in synchronously incubating species as first laid eggs can be exposed for up to several days prior to full incubation.
