This article explores the historical role of barber-surgeons, their impact on the evolution of surgical practice, and the advancements that led to the establishment of surgery as a highly specialized medical discipline. Georg Bartisch, a 16th century barber surgeon, published in 1583 his treatise entitled "Ophthalmodouleia" (Greek term meaning eye service), a work in German to promote ophthalmology for his countrymen barber surgeons. He did not have an academic education nor knew classical languages, he had used a triplet in terminology by using German, Hellenic and Latin nomination in his anatomical descriptions. Various accurate illustrations and a peculiar system of presentation with flap to liken an in-depth presentation were demonstrated to add prestige in his work. This raises concerns for another medic

Résumé :
From the Holy Roman Empire to the Land of the Tsars is a history of life in the German lands and Russia during the Age of Revolution. The story begins in 1768, when the Old Regimes of early modern Europe were still intact, and ends in 1870, when nationalism, liberalism, and industrial capitalism were triumphant. Using the methodology of microhistory, the book traces the odyssey of one family, the Rosenstrauchs. Johannes Ambrosius Rosenstrauch, the book’s central figure, was a shapeshifter who embodied the restless mobility of the Age of Revolution. Born and raised in Prussia, he wandered acros

Chapter 1 introduces the society and culture of the Holy Roman Empire under the Old Regime. This was the world in which Rosenstrauch grew up in the 1770s and 1780s. He was secretive about his origin and rarely spoke of it; all that is known with reasonable certainty is that he came from a Catholic burgher family in Breslau in Prussian Silesia, and was destined as a young man to become a barber-surgeon. Based on this limited information, the chapter reconstructs the environment in which he was formed. After describing the general character of Old Regime society, the chapter focuses on two socia

In this article, gender coding will be analysed from a long-term perspective, c. 1600–1900. By following barber-surgeons, a male-coded and guild-based occupation, from 1600 to 1900, it is possible to infer what the gender norms were and how they changed. In Sweden, it seems clear that the regulations of the guild, on a formal level, included everyone in the household of the barber-surgeon; if necessary, the wife could take over her husband’s business. This changed over time. At the end of the nineteenth century, it became formally permitted for women to train as barber-surgeons in their own ri

Severin Klosowski was born on the morning of 14 December 1865 in the village of Nagornak near Kolo in part of Russian-occupied Poland. He died 38 years later, as George Chapman, on the morning of 7 April 1903 in London, hanged for poisoning three of his partners with antimony in a way that was long and painful but which made it appear they were dying of natural causes. What is rather unusual about these murders were the many witnesses to the way that he carried them out. Antonio Klosowski was 30 and his wife Emilie 29 when their son Severin was born.
