It was Wigner that in the 1950’s first introduced the idea of modelling physical reality with an ensemble of random matrices while studying the energy levels of heavy atomic nuclei. Since then, the field of Random Matrix Theory has grown tremendously, with applications ranging from fluctuations on the economic markets to M-theory. It is the purpose of this thesis to discuss the basic concepts of Random Matrix Theory, using the ensembles of random matrices originally introduced by Wigner, the Gaussian ensembles, as a starting point. As Random Matrix Theory is classically concerned with the statistical properties of levels sequences, we start with a brief introduction to the statistical analysis of a level sequence before getting to the introduction of the Gaussian ensembles. With the ensembles defined, we move on to the statistical properties that they predict. In the light of these predictions, a few of the classical applications of Random Matrix Theory are discussed, and as an example of some of the important concepts, the Anderson model of localization is investigated in some detail.

Project Finance is an alternative financing mechanism to Corporate Finance which allows the companies to finance large infrastructure projects without endangers their own assets and heritage.Through Project Finance is possible to carry out major public works in the context of Public Private Partnership (PPP) Contracts, which the main guarantee of the creditors will be exploitation rights of the company that signs the public infrastructure contract, either by charging a fee to users (in case of self-sustaining PPP) or by charging a pre agreed amount to the State (in case of co-financed PPP).For a successful structuring of a PPP Project Finance, the joint work of a number of actors and legal instruments are required in order to complete the financing necessary circle in conditions of acceptable risk. The required actors are the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), the State, the Permitted Creditors, the Builder and Trustee. Among the necessary legal instruments include the PPP Contract, the Financing Contract, the Construction Contract and the Trust Agreement. El Project Finance es un mecanismo de financiamiento alternativo al Corporate Finance que permite el financiamiento de grandes proyectos de infraestructura, sin necesidad de que las corporaciones pongan en riesgo su patrimonio y activos propios. A través del Project Finance se pueden ejecutar obras públicas de envergadura, en el marco de Contratos de Asociación Público Privada (APP), en donde la principal garantía de los Acreedores consistirá en el derecho que tiene la empresa que suscribe dicho contrato para explotar la infraestructura pública, bien sea a través del cobro de una tarifa a los Usuarios (en el caso de las APP Autosostenibles) o a través del cobro de un monto pre acordado con el Estado (en el caso de las APP Cofinanciadas). Para la estructuración exitosa de un Project Finance en una APP se requiere el trabajo conjunto de una serie de actores y de instrumentos jurídicos que completen el círculo necesario para el financiamiento en condiciones de riesgo aceptables. Los actores necesarios son la Sociedad de Propósito Exclusivo (SPE), el Estado, los Acreedores Permitidos, el Constructor y un Fiduciario. Entre los instrumentos jurídicos necesarios destacan el Contrato de APP, el Contrato de Financiamiento, el Contrato de Construcción y el Contrato de Fideicomiso.

It has been recognised that formal methods are useful as a modelling tool in requirements engineering. Specification languages such as Z permit the precise and unambiguous modelling of system properties and behaviour. However some system problems, particularly those drawn from the information systems problem domain, may be difficult to model in crisp or precise terms. It may also be desirable that formal modelling should commence as early as possible, even when our understanding of parts of the problem domain is only approximate. This thesis suggests fuzzy set theory as a possible representation scheme for this imprecision or approximation. A fuzzy logic toolkit that defines the operators, measures and modifiers necessary for the manipulation of fuzzy sets and relations is developed. The toolkit contains a detailed set of laws that demonstrate the properties of the definitions when applied to partial set membership. It also provides a set of laws that establishes an isomorphism between the toolkit notation and that of conventional Z when applied to boolean sets and relations. The thesis also illustrates how the fuzzy logic toolkit can be applied in the problem domains of interest. Several examples are presented and discussed including the representation of imprecise concepts as fuzzy sets and relations, system requirements as a series of linguistically quantified propositions, the modelling of conflict and agreement in terms of fuzzy sets and the partial specification of a fuzzy expert system. The thesis concludes with a consideration of potential areas for future research arising from the work presented here.

Résumé :

Differential cryptanalysis and linear cryptanalysis are the first significant methods used to attack on block ciphers. These concepts compose the keystones for most of the attacks in recent years. Also, while designing a cipher, these attacks should be taken into consideration and the cipher should be created as secure against them. Although differential cryptanalysis and linear cryptanalysis are still important, they started to be inecient due to the improvements in the technology. So, these attacks are extended. For instance, higher order differential cryptanalysis, truncated differential cryptanalysis, generalized linear cryptanalysis, partitioning linear cryptanalysis, linear cryptanalysis using multiple linear approximations are introduced as the extended versions of these attacks. There exists significant applications of these extended attacks. Algebraic attack is a method of cryptanalysis that consists of obtaining a representation of the cipher as a system of equations and then, solving this system. Up to today, just a few attacks that are practically possible to mount are presented. However, due to the fact that algebraic cryptanalysis requires only a handful of known plaintexts to perform, it is a promising and significant attack. This thesis is a survey covering all the methods of attacks described above. Illustrations and summaries of some important papers including these cryptanalysis techniques are given.

Résumé :

Human societies are reliant on the functioning of the hydrologic cycle. The atmospheric branch of this cycle, often referred to as moisture recycling in the context of land-to-land exchange, refers to water evaporating, traveling through the atmosphere, and falling out as precipitation. Similar to the surface water cycle that uses the watershed as the unit of analysis, it is also possible to consider a ‘watershed of the sky’ for the atmospheric water cycle. Thus, I explore the precipitationshed - defined as the upwind surface of the Earth that provides evaporation that later falls as precipitation in a specific place. The primary contributions of this dissertation are to (a) introduce the precipitationshed concept, (b) provide a quantitative basis for the study of the precipitationshed, and (c) demonstrate its use in the fields of hydrometeorology, land-use change, social-ecological systems, ecosystem services, and environmental governance. In Paper I, the concept of the precipitationshed is introduced and explored for the first time. The quantification of precipitationshed variability is described in Paper II, and the key finding is that the precipitationsheds for multiple regions are persistent in time and space. Moisture recycling is further described as an ecosystem service in Paper III, to integrate the concept into the existing language of environmental sustainability and management. That is, I identify regions where vegetation more strongly regulates the provision of atmospheric water, as well as the regions that more strongly benefit from this regulation. In Paper IV, the precipitationshed is further explored through the lens of urban reliance on moisture recycling. Using a novel method, I quantify the vulnerability of urban areas to social-ecological changes within their precipitationsheds. In Paper V, I argue that successful moisture recycling governance will require flexible, transboundary institutions that are capable of operating within complex social-ecological systems. I conclude that, in the future, the precipitationshed can be a key tool in addressing the complexity of social-ecological systems. Résumé :

Meyer and Land (2002) have introduced the notion of a threshold concept in student learning. By definition a threshold is an insight which is initially alien or counter-intuitive, is integrative in that it subsumes some previous knowledge and is transformative in that it leads to a different perspective of or within the discipline. The notion is suggested to be applicable in many disciplines. It is phrased in terms that the threshold nature of a concept is defined mainly by the student experience rather than simply an objective analytical process. Nonetheless past experience may lead teachers of statistics at tertiary level to surmise that threshold concepts in basic statistics will include the notion of patterns of spread or variation, randomness, sampling, the central limit theorem, and linear regression. Introductions to Bayes' theorem and interval estimation are further candidates. Hypothesis testing may present other difficulties. Some methods and results in an exploration of student perspectives will be presented. A class of over 465 students in their second semester course of undergraduate applied statistics (STA220) participated in a survey with a short list of 4 items via internet and PC lab access to a WebCT site supporting their current course. The 4 items addressed their experience in the earlier course (STA100), and were as follows: Explain in your own words the term random sample. The central limit theorem tells us something about the mean of a sample. State in your own words what the theorem implies. List three concepts you found very simple to learn about in STA100. List the three most difficult concepts that you learnt about in STA100. The motive for the exploration is the open question of whether or not two key concepts were clearly and articulately reported by the respondents, and whether there is initial supportive evidence for any particular concepts being experienced as threshold concepts by these students. As teaching effort aimed at plausible threshold concepts may lead to more successful student participation and learning, the diagnostic value of an internet resource that assists in collection of data may be substantial. Text editors may assist in the analysis of typed responses. Internet connections will allow for the quicker transfer of data and for rapid interchange of improved public domain material addressing concepts that appear to have threshold qualities

"In the interdisciplinary project PoJoMeC, we investigate children's understanding of politics at preschool and primary school age. The interdisciplinary research approach is based on the perspectives of political didactics, literature and media didactics, and journalism. Initially, we will use qualitative approaches to find out how children's political awareness is shown. Our research methods focus on the one hand on the children's explicit knowledge, but on the other hand already on concepts of rule-governed action. The different degrees of abstraction of these concepts are based on a modification of the ecological model of human development according to Uri Bronfenbrenner (1979). The paper reconstructs the argumentative process of developing an acceptable interdisciplinary concept of politics for our joint research. Considering political didactics, literature and media studies, and philosophy, a research framework is presented that does not start with terms and concepts but considers more fundamental forms of social perception."

Résumé :

The article examines the main features, general characteristics and essence of the concept of solutions journalism. The basic principles of functioning of this model of journalism in the western press and in Ukraine are given. The list and features of activity of the organizations, institutes and editorial offices supporting development of journalism of solutions journalism. The purpose of the publication is to describe the Solutions Journalism model: its features, characteristics and features of functioning, to find out the difference in the understanding of the concept of «solutions journalism» and «constructive journalism» in general. The task of the publication was to conceptualize the main trends in the development of solutions journalism in the Western and Ukrainian information space; show the main characteristics, formats of functioning and analyze the features of the concepts of «solutions journalism» and «constructive journalism». Applied research methods: at the stage of research of the history of formation of the concept of Solutions Journalism the historical method is used. The hermeneutic method of research helped in the interpretation of basic concepts, the phenomenological approach was applied in the context of considering the essence of the phenomenon of solutions journalism. At the stage of generalization of the features of the concepts of Solutions Journalism and «constructive journalism» a comparative method was used, which gave an understanding of the common components in their essence. The method of analysis allowed to expand the understanding of the purpose of Solutions Journalism as a type of social journalism and its main tasks. With the help of synthesis it was possible to comprehensively understand the concept of Solutions Journalism and understand its features. In Ukraine, this type of journalism is just emerging, but its introduction into the editorial policy of the media may have a national importance. These are regional and local media that can inform their communities about the positive solution of certain problems in other communities, and thus thanks to this model can save local journalism. In the scientific context, there is a need to outline the main differences in the understanding of the concepts of decision journalism and constructive journalism, to understand the socio-psychological need to create good news.

In the article, the problems of using the systems of computer mathe- matics (SCM) as a tool to provide the fundamental component of operations re- search learning and students research activities support are considered. The role of SCM in the process of bachelors of informatics training and special aspects of pedagogical applications of these systems in the “Operations research” study is defined. The analysis of the basic concepts of the fundamentalisation of educa- tion and in particular the basic concepts of the fundamentalisation of informatics disciplines learning is summarized. The attempt to distinguish explicitly and specify the fundamental concepts in the content of “Operation research” learning is made. The method of “Operation research” study using Maxima system as a tool to support the basic concepts learning and an investigation is approved. The results of the pedagogical experiment on MAXIMA application to support the fundamental component of learning in the course of “Operation research” study and the analysis of its results are reported.

This book provides an overview of common tracer methods that can be used to estimate the age of young groundwater that recharged less than about 60 years ago. In this book, applications of tracers to address hydrogeologic problems are only mentioned briefly because such problems are the topic of the Groundwater Project Book titled Introduction to Isotopes and Environmental Tracers as Indicators of Groundwater Flow (Cook, 2020) which readers are encouraged to review. The dating tracer methods include tritium (3H), tritium/helium-3 (3H/3He), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). All these methods except 3H involve the occurrence and transport of dissolved gases and thus the basic concepts of dissolved gases are discussed in this book. The authors are hydrogeologists interested in solving both groundwater quality and quantity issues in a world in which the availability of high-quality groundwater is diminishing. The goal of this book is to inform researchers and policy makers about the concepts and underlying assumptions involved in groundwater dating methods with the aim of increasing the application of these powerful methods while informing readers of their inherent limitations.

Résumé :

The article analyzes the concepts of "good" and "evil" from the point of view of physics. Although the physical concept of “entropy” as a measure of disorder was the first candidate who could serve as the physical basis of these ethical concepts, in fact it is not suitable for this purpose. However, the “entropic potential of the event” Z (T, A) that describes the impact of the event A that occurred in the moment T0 in the system R to the entropy of this system at the future moment T (T > T0) is well suited for our analysis. The article describes methods for calculating the “entropic potential of the event” for certain real-life events and discuss several other related ideas, such as “time factor”, “averaging” and “universality”.

The electronic training course “Theoretical Foundations of Physical Culture” contains fifteen topics that allow students to understand: the basic concepts of physical culture (PC) and sports; its role in general cultural and professional training; socio-biological foundations of PC; the role of motor activity for modern man; the basics of a healthy lifestyle; means of PC in the regulation of life activity; basics of general physical and sports training; the basics of the theory and methodology of physical education; the basics of methods for organizing and conducting independent physical education and recreational activities; the basics of self-control and functional diagnostics during physical education classes; professional and applied physical training of university students; basics of health PC; doping problems in sports activities; the basics of massage and its connection with PC; information on sports injuries; basics of adaptive PC The content of each topic includes a lecture part, designed in the form of an illustrated test with hyperlinks, a presentation on the lecture, a practical assignment on the material of the topic, as well as a test assignment (of ten questions) on the topic. The final control of students' completion of the course is carried out by sequential study of topics (all or several, depending on the curriculum of the specialty) and the accumulation of at least 70% of correct answers on control tests. In addition to the lecture material and practical assignments, the electronic training course contains information necessary for students to master the educational material in a high-quality manner, in the form of additional reference (glossary) and educational literature previously published by the authors of this course. The structure and content of the electronic course complies with the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard for the academic discipline “Physical Culture and Sports”, as well as the requirements of the USMU for the structure and content for this educational tool.

Designing a mobile-oriented environment for professional and practical training requires determining the stable (fundamental) and mobile (technological) components of its content and determining the appropriate model for specialist training. In order to determine the ratio of fundamental and technological in the content of software engineers’ training, a retrospective analysis of the first model of training software engineers developed in the early 1970s was carried out and its compliance with the current state of software engineering development as a field of knowledge and a new the standard of higher education in Ukraine, specialty 121 “Software Engineering”. It is determined that the consistency and scalability inherent in the historically first training program are largely consistent with the ideas of evolutionary software design. An analysis of its content also provided an opportunity to identify the links between the training for software engineers and training for computer science, computer engineering, cybersecurity, information systems and technologies. It has been established that the fundamental core of software engineers’ training should ensure that students achieve such leading learning outcomes: to know and put into practice the fundamental concepts, paradigms and basic principles of the functioning of language, instrumental and computational tools for software engineering; know and apply the appropriate mathematical concepts, domain methods, system and object-oriented analysis and mathematical modeling for software development; put into practice the software tools for domain analysis, design, testing, visualization, measurement and documentation of software. It is shown that the formation of the relevant competencies of future software engineers must be carried out in the training of all disciplines of professional and practical training.

The design section of API Recommended Practice 1111 for the Design, Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Offshore Hydrocarbon Pipelines is based on limit states concepts, cast in a simple and practical framework. Some strain-based criteria exist in the recommended practice (RP), but there are a number of load cases not explicitly addressed in the RP that could benefit from strain-based design methods. Given the advances in strain-based design methodology in recent years, there is a need to prepare a supplementary document describing how strain-based design approaches may be used in connection with the RP to produce better overall solutions and ultimately serve as a basis for enhancing the RP.
