Résumé :
This study dealt with the students’ mathematical beliefs and attitudes as predictors to students’ mathematical ability of New Bataan District. The study's main goal is to determine the impact of mathematical beliefs and attitudes on students' mathematical ability in New Bataan District, using a research design that is quantitative and predictive-correlational with regression analysis and a total of 270 respondents among junior high school students from the district's eight secondary schools. The Mean, Pearson r, and Multiple Regression Analysis were the measurable instruments used in this study. The mathematical beliefs of students were discovered to be a strong predictor of their mathematical abilities in the New Bataan district in terms of teacher’s role, relevance, difficulty, and high degree of competence. Furthermore, the results revealed that in terms of confidence, importance, and engagement, students' mathematical attitudes as a predictor of students' mathematical ability in the New Bataan district are quite high. Moreover, the students’ mathematical beliefs and students’ mathematical ability of New Bataan District have a significant relationship. Also, the students’ mathematical attitudes and students’ mathematical ability of New Bataan District have a significant relationship. Only teacher’s role out of four domains of students’ mathematical beliefs predicts students’ mathematical ability. No domains of students’ mathematical attitudes predicts students’ mathematical ability. As a result, the higher a student's mathematical ability, the better his or her mathematical beliefs and attitudes about mathematics are.

Résumé :
AbstractThe television and radio documentary "The Tragedy of Bataan" uses extensive interviews with survivors to bring the 1942 Bataan Death March to life for contemporary viewers. The filmmaker, whose father was a POW in the Philippines, describes the process of gathering the interviews and putting them together into a compelling story. She describes the film strategy of having the men and women involved tell the story in their own words, with no historians or experts on camera; explains how a documentary film differs from a written monograph; and explores the constraints set by television and by the television audience. Allowing these participants and eye-witnesses to tell the story conveys their perceptions of the atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese Army, of General Douglas MacArthur, and of the suffering, the humor, and the heroism of the common American soldiers.

Résumé :
Health Information Systems (HIS) are vital in making or developing the policies of health programs in the Philippines. The HIS is broadly defined as a system that integrates data collection, processing, reporting, and use of the information necessary for improving health service effectiveness and efficiency through better management at all levels of health services. This study is conducted to visualize the current situation of the health information system users in public health facilities in the Province of Bataan. It endeavors to answer on how the health facilities in the Province are described based on their report platform, the number of personnel, trained and untrained per facility, and the needs of the facilities when it comes to the training of the encoders. The researchers used the descriptive method specifically the Dashboarding, Analysis, and Reporting or DAR method for this study. This study focused on the data gathered from the Health Information Systems Assessment Tool. The assessment was conducted with 24 different health facilities in the Province of Bataan. The study revealed that 14 out of 24 (58%) of the Rural Health Units (RHUs) in the Province of Bataan used paper-based reporting while 10 out of 24 (42%) of the RHUs used a health information system. Twenty one out of 48 encoders (44%) are untrained while 27 out of 48 (56%) are trained. Capability training in each health information system used is proposed. In conclusion, the Province of Bataan is supporting the implementation of the use of health information systems (HIS) by designating encoders for every public health facility.

Résumé :
Abstract In August 2017, the USS Bataan received a mass casualty incident (MCI) of 6 foreign special forces operators after a helicopter crash. All 6 patients were medically evacuated successfully to the USS Bataan, and all patients survived and were successfully returned to their allied country. Four of the patients received whole blood with 2 receiving over 10 units of blood or massive transfusions. One patient required 44 units of blood, and at 1 point in his resuscitation, he received 12 units of whole blood every 30 minutes. Due to administrative factors outside of the ship’s control, these 6 patients had prolonged stabilization during the MCI. This factor differentiates this MCI on the USS Bataan from previous cases. Internal medicine trained physicians with their expertise in inpatient care, postsurgical management, and critical care were instrumental in sustaining these casualties in this prolonged stabilization environment. In the era of distributed maritime operations, where casualty-receiving ships will experience more geographic and resource isolation, there is a potential for the need for prolonged stabilization above the 6 to 12-hour window typical of role II platforms. The known increase in cardiac and pulmonary morbidity and mortality with medical evacuation delay highlights the importance of internal medicine physicians in the role II setting. It is critical that we emphasize the inpatient and critical care principles of these patients in the prolonged field care environment.

Résumé :
Between 1939 and 1945 several Hollywood studios produced significant films set in the war-torn Philippines, including Bataan (MGM, 1943), So Proudly We Hail (Paramount, 1943),and Back to Bataan (RKO,1943). Although these films immediately preceded Philippines independence in 1946, they do not position the Philippines as a soon-to-be autonomous nation. Instead, these films reaffirm, and even celebrate, the unequal colonial power relationship that marked the history of U.S. occupation of the archipelago. A careful reading of these films, which is the subject of this article, reveals the stamina of this colonial ideology (colonial uplift, tutelage, and nation-building) that legitimized U.S. colonial rule in the Phillapines and dates back to the turn of the century. What the perpetuation of this ideology suggests is the postwar neocolonial relationship between the two nations that U.S. government officials anticipated. This revised neocolonial ideology is expressed through the racialized and gendered images of Filipino characters and their interaction with U.S. American characters. The U.S. government attempted to control such images as part of its wartime propaganda, but had to rely on the voluntary compliance of the major Hollywood studios. While the Filipinos in films like Back to Bataan, made at the war's end, appear to challenge the racist stereotypes of prior films, they are re-inscribed by a neocolonial form of U.S. supremacy—— framed as wartime U.S. guidance and Filipino dependency.

Résumé :
Objective : The goal is to provide the right amount of water to the crop, at the right time, to meet the crop's needs. It was conducted to estimate evapotranspiration using atmometers for irrigation scheduling that may be highly beneficial in soil water balance, water allocation and budgeting, irrigation management, and improving crop yield and production for greater income. Methods: This study was conducted at the Organic Agricultural Research and Development Innovation Center at the Bataan Peninsula State University – Abucay Campus, Bangkal, Abucay, Bataan, Philippines (North 14°44'28” East 120°27'04”). The effects of using different evapotranspiration estimation methods on the timing and amounts of water application were then evaluated by using a computed irrigation scheduling model. Findings: The atmometer ( and Penman-Monteith ( values were statistically analyzed using linear regression (y=0.8573x + 1.586), coefficients of determination (R² = 0.7236), root mean – squared error (RMSD = 0.73), mean bias error (MBE = 0.03), and the t-statistics (significant at 5% level). The study revealed that the ETo-A data strongly correlated with the ETo-PM data. Using an atmometer for scheduling irrigation on tomatoes would have resulted in an equally similar distribution of irrigation events, more water would have been provided throughout the season compared to using ETo-PM data. Novelty : The calibrated evapotranspiration data from the atmometer may guide appropriate irrigation depth and schedule for tomatoes. By aligning irrigation intervals with other crops’ water requirements, farmers can optimize water usage, minimize water stress, and achieve higher crop yields. Keywords: Atmometer, Bataan Philippines, Evapotranspiration, Tomato, Penman-Montheith Equation

Résumé :
Abstract. Category 5 Super Typhoon Bopha, the world's worst storm of 2012, formed abnormally close to the Equator, and its landfall on Mindanao set the record proximity to the Equator for its category. Its torrential rains generated an enormous debris flow in the Mayo River watershed that swept away much of the village Andap in the New Bataan municipality, burying areas under rubble as thick as 9 m and killing 566 people. Established in 1968, New Bataan had never experienced super typhoons and debris flows. This unfamiliarity compounded the death and damage. We describe Bopha's history, debris flows and the Mayo River disaster, and then we discuss how population growth contributed to the catastrophe, as well as the possibility that climate change may render other near-Equatorial areas vulnerable to hazards brought on by similar typhoons. Finally, we recommend measures to minimize the loss of life and damage to property from similar future events.

Résumé :
AbstractThe Bataan Death March of 1942 has entered historical consciousness as one of the ultimate measures of Japanese wartime barbarity. At a level bound up with deference to the veterans who experienced such hardship, a compelling reality emerges: Helpless Americans marched under the watchful eyes and cruel bayonets of the Japanese oppressor, and the Filipinos, in despair over the defeat of their defenders, wept in sympathy as they watched. The pattern reinforces pleasing notions of a benevolent colonial relation, the "good war" against a barbarous enemy, and loyal allies enlisted in a righteous cause. Yet thousands of men, women, and children of three nationalities and various classes participated in the complex drama that came to represent the Death March. Their complexity demands an interpretation that goes beyond the simplicity of "oppressor – victim – sympathetic observer." This article finds another story which does not replace the first but which includes American racism and colonial support for Filipino elites, and Filipino divisiveness, poverty, resentment, and Death March exploitation of American weakness and need.

This showed a comprehensive study on the mangrove crab industry in Bataan, Philippines. Mangrove crab growers (35%) were between 51-60 years old, mostly married with 5-7 family members. Farming was highest (30.77%) between 6-10 years while some were farming for 40 years (1.29%). Monthly income has strong positive correlation (r=676) with production area. Scylla serrata, S. olivacea, and S. tranquebarica were identified using traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). Results revealed 69.57% of the pond used for farming was 1-10 ha employing the polyculture method. About 52.17% used coin-sized crablets while 39.13% fly-sized. Annual production was less than a ton for 46.38% growers while 1.45% have >5 tons. Annual income showed a strong positive correlation (r=0.886 and r=0.815) with production area and annual production, showing a significant difference (p<001). Harvested crabs were marketed live in Orani Port. Grading and pricing were due to sex, weight, and characteristics. Problems include the implementation of FAO 264 s. 2020, weather, market practice, pandemic, and high rejections. Men and women play significant roles where laborious were perceived to be men’s sphere while less laborious and financial aspects were for women.

Résumé :
The study aimed to determine the socio-demographic profile and document existing practices and problems related to ginger farmers' soil fertility, diseases, and insect pest management practices. Also, to analyze the agro-ecological situation using SWOT analysis. The enumerators conducted one-on-one interviews with the ginger farmers with participative field transects from November 2017 to June 2018 to identify the Ethnofarming practices of Mandaya ginger farmers with 44 key participants. The result shows that the majority of the ginger farmers are old (36%), male (80%), married (85%) with 5 to 6 children (32%), with more than 25 years of ginger farming experience (77%) in less than 0.25 hectare (50%), and have low educational attainment (48%). The Mandaya ginger farmers use soil color and texture, the presence of Ageratum conyzoides, and crop income from the previous cropping as indicators to identify fertile and infertile soils. Fewer Mandaya farmers still practice indigenous knowledge including magical, factual, and traditional practices on ginger production. Although most farmers use new technologies, some tend to combine their indigenous knowledge with new technologies for ginger farming. It has been identified that the Mandaya farmers had limited knowledge of controlling insect and disease infestations, soil fertility management, and commodity price fluctuation, which are significant constraints for them. Mandaya ginger farmers and government agencies are encouraged to develop technologies that will utilize their indigenous knowledge of ginger and other crops while promoting, preserving, and protecting their cultural identity anchored to a scientific way of farming to help attain food security and sustainability for the country.

Résumé :
Madre de Agua (Trichantera gigantean Nees) is forage and considered a Multiple Purpose Tree Species used for ruminants and poultry animals with a good potential source of protein and contain good amino acid. Few studies were conducted in terms of the agronomic characteristics of the Madre de Agua prior to utilization as feeds and most studies conducted were mainly conducted to feed monogastric animals. The study intends to produce data for the agronomic characteristics of Madre de Agua as planted and produces a shaded portion of the upland area in BPSU Abucay Campus, Abucay, Bataan. The following parameters were gathered; Plant Height, Leaf to Stem Ratio, Herbage Yield, and Dry Matter Yield and Soil Analysis. Moreover, the following baseline data were used: the area with an elevation of 141.1 feet above sea level with an average rainfall of 296.45mm and temperature ranges from 26oC to 30oC during the duration of the study. Fertilizer requirements are based on the result of BSWM soil analysis (30g/tree ammonium phosphate, 169g/tree Urea, and 4kg/tree organic fertilizer) applied during and after transplanting with adequate irrigation. The study was carried out using systematic random sampling for plants. The result of agronomic characteristics in upland conditions showed that the average plant height of Madre De Agua was 110.50 cm, Leaf to Stem Ratio was 65.82%/34.18% per plant, herbage yield was 556.50 grams per plant, dry matter yield (oven dry) was 87.57% per plant. The established area for the production of the Madre de Agua will be utilized to provide a continuous source of feed to small ruminants and other monogastric species for future research in animal production.

Résumé :
Objective: Since 2004, the US Navy has provided ship-borne medical assistance during three earthquake disasters. Because Navy ship deployment for disaster relief (DR) is a recent development, formal guidelines for equipping and staffing medical operations do not yet exist. The goal of this study was to inform operational planning and resource allocation for future earthquake DR missions by 1) reporting the type and volume of patient presentations, medical staff, and surgical services and 2) providing a comparative analysis of the current medical and surgical capabilities of a hospital ship and a casualty receiving and treatment ship (CRTS).Design: The following three earthquake DR operations were reviewed retrospectively: 1) USNS Mercy to Indonesia in 2004, 2) USNS Mercy to Indonesia in 2005, and 3) USNS Comfort/USS Bataan to Haiti in 2010. (The USS Bataan was a CRTS.) Mission records and surgical logs were analyzed. Descriptive and statistical analysis was performed. Comparative analysis of hospital ship and CRTS platforms was made based on firsthand observations. Results: For the three missions, 986 patient encounters were documented. Of 1,204 diagnoses, 80 percent were disaster-related injuries, more than half of which were extremity trauma. Aboard hospital ships, healthcare staff provided advanced (Echelon III) care for disaster-related injuries and various nondisaster- related conditions. Aboard the CRTS, staff provided basic (Echelon II) care for disaster-related injuries. Conclusions: Our data indicate that musculoskeletal extremity injuries in sex- and age-diverse populations comprised the majority of clinical diagnoses. Current capabilities and surgical staffing of hospital ships and CRTS platforms influenced their respective DR operations, including the volume and types of surgical care delivered.
