Es gibt immer mehr Algorithmen, die etwa Vorhersagen über die Erholung nach einem Schlaganfall treffen. Nun fragt sich, ob diese präziser sind als die Einschätzungen von Expertinnen und Experten und ob sie einen Vorteil bei der Diagnostik, Prognose und Therapie bringen. Die Professoren Bernhard Elsner und Jan Mehrholz analysieren den Status quo und geben einen Ausblick, wie Algorithmen die Neuroreha zukünftig beeinflussen könnten.

Durch umfangreiches Aktenmaterial im Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein ist Johann Christoph Friedrich Bachs Bewerbung um die Organistenstelle an der evangelisch-lutherischen Hauptkirche Altona aus dem Jahr 1758 gut dokumentiert. Neben Bach bewarben sich zahlreiche Schüler Georg Philipp Telemanns und Schüler Johann Ernst Bernhard Pfeiffers, Organist an der Hamburger Kirche St. Petri. Es ging um die Nachfolge des im April 1758 verstorbenen Detleff Johann Marxsen. Trotz der Bemühungen, Bach für das Amt zu gewinnen, scheiterten die Verhandlungen aus finanziellen Gründen und weil Bach keine Entlassung von seinem Dienstherrn Graf Wilhelm von Schaumburg-Lippe erhielt. Der Aufsatz setzt sich mit den theoretischen Ansätzen Werner Neumanns und Carl Dahlhaus‘ zur Permutationsfuge auseinander. 1938 definierte Neumann erstmals eine bei Bach häufig auftretende, vom mehrfachen Kontrapunkt geprägte Form der Fuge mit dem Begriff „Permutationsfuge“. Diesem 1959 von Dahlhaus fortentwickelten Ansatz widerspricht der Autor nicht, wendet sich aber gegen die tradierte Sicht, diese Form sei eine genuine Erfindung Bachs. Als Beleg dienen ihm theoretische Quellen wie Kompositionen von Jan Pieterszon Sweelinck/Gioseffo Zarlino, Christoph Bernhard, Johann Adam Reinken, Matthias Weckmann, Johann Theile u.a. Auch die Verbreitung des Verfahrens in Mitteldeutschland wird nachgewiesen. Zuletzt gelten einige Gedanken der Schwierigkeit genauer Begriffsdefinitionen vor dem Hintergrund der historischen Wandelbarkeit der Form- und Gattungsbegriffe. Tagebücher in Briefen scheinen eher selten zu sein; demgegenüber gibt es Beispiele für Briefe, die hinterher zusammengefaßt eine Tagebuchfunktion erfüllten, wie etwa bei der Potsdamer Porträtmalerin Anna Bernhardi.1 Und literarische Darstellungen in Briefform, so etwa Briefromane, kommen öfter vor. Im vorliegenden Fall wurden die beabsichtigten Briefe durch Fortschreiben der Berichte gewissermaßen in ein Tagebuch verwandelt – nach der deutschen Kapitulation im Mai 1945 gab es keinen Postverkehr mit dem Ausland, und so blieb es denn beim Tagebuch. Ob und wann die Berichte an ihre Empfängerin, Klinckowstroems Cousine in Schweden, geschickt wurden, ist nicht bekannt.

The basic chemistry knowledge of first-year students in the disciplines Chemistry, Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Health Sciences and Technology has been evaluated within the first three weeks of the Fall semester with a Moodle-based quiz at ETH Zurich. It consists of 37 small problems testing the knowledge that ETH students entering the lecture courses General Chemistry 1 (Inorganic Chemistry) (AC1) and Organic Chemistry 1 (OC1) should ideally have. An initial set of questions was developed by Bernhard Jaun (ETH Zurich) in 2007, it was combined with questions from an evaluation created in 2015 by Markus Müller (secondary school II teacher). The results of a total of 925 students who took part in the 2016 and 2017 evaluations are presented. It was found that 80% of the students of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Interdisciplinary Natural Sciences (AC1 course) and 70% of the students of Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Health Sciences and Technology (OC1 course) scored ≥60%. Students who took the focus course (Schwerpunktfach) Biology and Chemistry at the SEK II level (Swiss school system) performed on average 13–18% better and with a smaller standard deviation than other students. No significant differences were observed with regard to gender or the region in which the qualification for university entrance was obtained.

This article is part of the special section titled The Genealogies of Memory, guest edited by Ferenc Laczó and Joanna Wawrzyniak This article investigates the evolution of Hungary’s memory of 1956, from the counterrevolution to the dissident struggle for rehabilitation in the eighties, its relation to the change of regimes in 1989, and its subsequent appropriation for nationalist purposes in defiance of a European memory regime. Mnemonic warriors like Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and historian Mária Schmidt have championed 1956 as a struggle for freedom and independence and symbols of Hungarian martyrdom and bravery. Only recently a new-found Central European unity in adversity has been observed: the “counterrevolution” against the European Union. Perusing interviews, samizdat articles, public appeals and speeches, and other documentary evidence, including historical analyses, this article identifies mnemonic actors and strategies to assess the intricate relationship between 1956 and 1989. The analysis of museum exhibitions, statues, monuments, and national symbols helps reveal the varying significance ascribed to 1956 before and after 1989. The study relies on the conceptual groundwork of Michael Bernhard and Jan Kubik. It contributes to arguments put forth by historians James Mark, Anna Seleny, Nora Borodziej, and Árpád von Klimó.

Der Einsatz digitaler Medien in formellen Lernzusammenhängen (Schule, Hochschule, berufliche Bildung etc.) bietet neue Möglichkeiten, die Kenntnisse und Kompetenzen Lernender darzustellen bzw. abzubilden. So sollen z.B. Instrumente wie E-Portfolios eine selbstbestimmtere Leistungsdarstellung ermöglichen: Lernende sollen ihren Lernprozess dokumentieren und reflektieren, sich ihrer Verantwortung für ihn bewusst werden und ihn im Idealfall selbst steuern, Lehrende nehmen dabei eine beratende und unterstützende Rolle ein. Allerdings sind die Erwartungen und Ansprüche an E-Portfolios sehr unterschiedlich; sie reichen von standardisierten, formalisierten Qualifikationsdarstellungen für den beruflichen Wettbewerbsmarkt bis hin zu individuellen Kompetenzprofilen. Zwar sind in Lehr-Lern-Arrangements weiterhin quantitative Bewertungen von Leistungen weit verbreitet, doch finden sich zunehmend auch qualitative Anteile z.B. durch den Einsatz von E-Portfolios. Dabei werden diese in bestehende Lehr- und Lernkulturen integriert, die sie gleichzeitig verändern. Die Frage ist auch, was mit E-Portfolios erreicht werden soll: Geht es um eine stärkere Förderung der Selbstlernkompetenz und um die Fähigkeit, sich eigenverantwortlich den Forderungen nach lebensbegleitendem Lernen stellen zu können? Sollen individuelle Stärken und Schwächen transparenter werden, um die eigene Reflexion von Bildungsreife wie auch deren Einschätzung und Bewertung durch Ausbildungspersonal zu erleichtern? Oder geht es um beides? Unter dem Oberbegriff E-Assessment dagegen lassen sich computer- bzw. internetgestützte Prüfungsformen (z.B. E-Klausuren) zusammenfassen, die anders als E-Portfolios eine möglicherweise objektivere und vergleichbarere Bewertungsgrundlage für die Identifizierung, Darstellung und Reflexion individueller Leistungen bieten. Zu hinterfragen ist in jedem Fall, welchen Stellenwert Selbstreflexion und Selbststeuerung in immer stärker durchorganisierten (Aus-)Bildungsinhalten haben und wie insbesondere Selbststeuerungsansprüche mit aktuellen bildungspolitischen und sozialen Rahmenbedingungen vereinbar sind. Haben E-Portfolios und E-Assessments eine Zukunft? In welche Richtung entwickeln sich Leistungskontrollen und Diskussionen um Kompetenzentwicklung? Die Beiträge in diesem Themenheft stellen vielfach Erfahrungen mit der Konzeption und Implementierung von E-Lehr-/Lern-Portfolios vor. Sie gehen auf die Funktionen und Zwecke von Methoden der individuellen Leistungsdarstellung ein. Sie erläutern Ansätze, die sich mit der Aneignung derartiger Methoden durch Lernende und Lehrende beschäftigen, und dokumentieren die damit verbundenen Anforderungen auf der Grundlage empirischer Praxis. Thematisiert werden ebenfalls die Verfahren und Tools, die eingesetzt werden, um die Selbstreflexion und -steuerung des Lernprozesses bzw. der Kompetenzentwicklung zu unterstützen. Dabei ist auch die Frage zentral, inwieweit informell erworbene Kenntnisse und Kompetenzen berücksichtigt werden. So zeigen Uwe Elsholz und Sönke Knutzen am Beispiel des berufswissenschaftlich begründeten E-Learning-Konzepts Kompetenzwerkst@tt Elektrohandwerk die Potenziale und Grenzen des E- Portfolio-Einsatzes im dualen System der Berufsausbildung auf. Sie erörtern anhand theoretischer Bezüge sowie empirisch-praktischer Konzeption konkrete Ziele und die Umsetzung des softwaregestützten Ausbildungskonzepts. Rudolf Kammerl schildert die Entwicklung und Einführung einer neuen technischen Infrastruktur zur Unterstützung von Lehre und Studium an der Universität Passau. Im Rahmen des vom BMBF geförderten Projekts wurde in das bereits vorhandene Lernmanagementsystem Stud.IP unter anderem eine E-Portfolio-Funktion implementiert. Kammerl gibt einen Überblick über die konzeptionellen Überlegungen und Umsetzungswege in Bezug auf Software und Speicherstruktur, die neuen Funktionen des Systems, und skizziert die Pilotphase des Projekts. Olaf Zawacki-Richter, Eva Bäcker und Anke Hanft untersuchen anhand einer qualitativen Analyse von Projektportfolios aus verschiedenen Modulen des Studiengangs MBA Bildungsmanagement der Universität Oldenburg, auf welche Weise Studierende über ihren Kompetenzentwicklungsprozess reflektieren und ihn dokumentieren. Bei der Auswertung des empirischen Materials stützen sich die Autoren auf das Kompetenzmodell von Heyse und Erpenbeck und nutzen deren Kompetenzbegriff. Geprüft werden soll die Möglichkeit der didaktischen Einbettung der Portfoliomethode als kompetenzbasierte Prüfungsleistung und als Reflexionsmedium für die Studierenden, um ihre erworbenen Kompetenzen sichtbar zu machen. Thomas Sporer, Silvia Sippel und Philip Meyer beschreiben den Einsatz von E-Portfolios als Assessment-Instrument. Hierzu stellen die Autoren den Kontext des Studienprogramms «Begleitstudium Problemlösekompetenz» der Universität Augsburg vor, das eine Implementierung der Lern- und Arbeitsleistungen von Studierenden durch E-Portfolios ermöglicht. Anhand eines Szenarios werden die Nutzung der E-Portfolio-Software in der Praxis erörtert und die bisherigen Evaluationsergebnisse im Hinblick auf den Weiterentwicklungsbedarf des Systems diskutiert. Einen anderen Blickwinkel, nämlich die Perspektive der Lehrenden, nimmt Marianne Merkt ein. Sie stellt den Einsatz eines digitalen Lehrportfolios beispielhaft anhand des berufsbegleitenden Weiterbildungsstudiengangs «Master of Higher Education» der Universität Hamburg vor. In dieser Fallstudie beschreibt Merkt die didaktische Gestaltung sowie die curriculare und technische Einbindung der Portfolios in die Hochschullehre und skizziert die begleitende Studienreform. Sie stellt das Konzept auch in den Kontext lerntheoretischer und paradigmatischer Überlegungen. Einen eher grundlegenden Beitrag liefern Jörg Stratmann, Annabell Preußler und Michael Kerres. Sie stellen nach einer Begriffsbestimmung von Portfolios anschliessend den Nutzen und die Potenziale von E-Portfolios für die Kompetenzerfassung von Lernenden an Schulen und Hochschulen heraus. Aufbauend auf Thomas Häckers dreidimensionalem heuristischen Modell zur Charakterisierung von Portfolios erarbeiten die AutorInnen ein Analyseraster, das Lehrenden, die (E-)Portfolios in ihren Veranstaltungen nutzen wollen, als Instrument dienen kann, deren Einführungsprozess zu unterstützen und als Lernprozess zu gestalten. Das veränderte Mediennutzungsverhalten Jugendlicher und junger Erwachsener im Web 2.0 steht bei Michael J. Eble im Fokus. Die zunehmende Nutzung von Social Networks wie Facebook zur individuellen Selbstdarstellung kann nach Eble in Kombination von E-Portfolios und dem identitätsbasierenden Ansatz der Markenbildung für die Abbildung eigener Lern- und Leistungsentwicklung in Lehr- und Lernkontexten nutzbar gemacht werden. Unter drei zentralen Fragestellungen zur Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Person und Identität, zum Bezug zwischen persönlicher Markenbildung und formellen Lehr-Lern-Kontexten und zur Adoption und Akzeptanz von E-Portfolios untersucht Eble Chancen und Grenzen von E-Portfolios im Zeitalter des Social Networking. Dirk Jahn, Bernhard Trager und Karl Wilbers zeigen am Beispiel einer beruflichen Weiterbildung für Berufsbildungspersonal aus der Aus- und Weiterbildung im Einzelhandel die Möglichkeiten des Portfolioeinsatzes zur Qualifizierung dieser pädagogischen Professionals in restriktiven Settings. Als Grundlage für die Gestaltung von E-Portfolios dienen den Autoren in diesem Zusammenhang die Referenztheorien des Konzeptwandels, der Selbstreflexion und des kritischen Denkens. Darauf basierend werden die Phasen der E-Portfolioarbeit beispielhaft beschrieben, wobei vor allem die Einstiegsphase und der dissonanzgetriebene E-Portfolio-Prozess als bedeutend für das Gelingen der portfoliogestützten Qualifizierung der pädagogischen Professionals markiert werden. Selbstgesteuertes, reflexives Lernen gilt heute als Grundlage für erfolgreiches, lebenslanges Lernen und gewinnt an den Hochschulen immer mehr an Bedeutung. Thomas Czerwionka, Sönke Knutzen und Detlev Bieler entwickeln in ihrem Beitrag einen Ansatz, die Selbststeuerungsfähigkeit Studierender durch medienbasierte Reflexionsunterstützung zu fördern. In einem ersten Schritt erläutern die Autoren Selbststeuerung im erziehungswissenschaftlichen Kontext sowie lernbezogene Reflexion und beschreiben anschliessend anhand eines Mehrebenenmodells zur Identifikation möglicher Reflexionsziele- und gegenstände die Potenziale von (e)Portfolios als Reflexionsmedien. Untermauert wird der Ansatz von Czerwionka, Knutzen und Bieler durch die Darstellung der E-Portfolioarbeit an der Technischen Universität Hamburg- Harburg. Klaus Himpsl beschreibt einen Pilotversuch zur Implementierung von E-Portfolios im berufsbegleitenden Masterstudiengang eEducation der Donau-Universität Krems. Das Blended-Learning-Konzept des Studiengangs bildet den Ausgangspunkt für die Verwendung von E-Portfolios zur Kompetenzdarstellung der Studierenden. Himpsl stellt unter pädagogischen Gesichtspunkten die Portfoliokonzeption, ihren Realisierungsprozess und ihre technische Umsetzung dar und berücksichtigt dabei besonders Aspekte des Assessments sowie des Peer-Feedbacks. Marc Egloffstein, Jan Baierlein und Clemens Frötschl gehen in ihrem Beitrag dem Einsatz von E-Portfolios im akademischen Kontext nach. Die Art und die Förderung von Selbstreflexion in der akademischen Ausbildung von HandelslehrerInnen stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt ihres Interesses. Darauf aufbauend stellen die Autoren zwei exemplarische Szenarios des Portfolioeinsatzes im Studium der Wirtschaftspädagogik an der Universität Bamberg vor und untersuchen anhand einer quantitativen Inhaltsanalyse portfoliobasierte Reflexion hinsichtlich der Fragestellung, wie tiefer gehende Reflexionsprozesse durch die Portfolioarbeit zu fördern sind.

Der Artikel stellt zwei in den Musikalienbeständen der Stadtkirche St. Johannis aufgefundene Manuskripte vor. Zum einen handelt es sich um ein Kompositionsautograf C. P. E. Bachs (Ich bin vergnügt in meinem Stande, Kantate CPEBachWV F 30), zum anderen um eine Abschrift einer nicht genau identifizierbaren Missa (Kyrie und Gloria) in e-moll von der Hand J. S. Bachs. Neben der Beschreibung der Quellen widmet sich der Artikel ihrer Überlieferung bis zum Verbleib in Mügeln. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit widerfährt der Komposition C. P. E. Bachs, die als früheste Quelle zu dessen kompositorischen Schaffen (ca. 1732-34) eingehend gewürdigt wird. Background:The knowledge about interdependencies between rheumatic manifestations and malignancies is limited. Further, reliable data on the occurrence of rheumatic symptoms as side effects of specific cancer therapies beyond checkpointinhibitor-induced immune-related adverse events are sparse. In this regard, although arthralgia under estrogen receptor-targeting therapies (aromatase inhibitors and the estrogen receptor modulator tamoxifen) has been frequently reported in oncological clinical trials and case reports, prospective data including an assessment of rheumatic manifestations by rheumatologists are lacking.Objectives:To contribute to a better understanding of interdependencies between rheumatic manifestations and cancer/ estrogen blockade and potentially improve the management of both entities, pilot data were analysed.Methods:Data on characteristics and treatment of rheumatic manifestations and cancer as well as their timely association were systematically, prospectively collected and analysed in the MalheuR (´malignancy and rheumatic disease´) registry, a long-term, observational study designed to study patients suffering from concomitant rheumatic disease and malignancy and/or premalignant lesions.Results:We identified 11 patients with rheumatic manifestations under estrogen receptor-targeting therapies (3 anastrozol, 4 letrozol, 8 tamoxifen) as part of breast cancer treatment. In addition to breast cancer one patient had a lymphoma 3 years after and another patient had a non-small cell lung cancer 2 years before breast cancer diagnosis. The patients had different cancer stages (5 IA, 3 IIA, 1 IIB, and 1 IVA). Their mean age at cancer diagnosis was 60.4 ± 11.6 years and all patients are females. The time interval between diagnosis of cancer and onset of systemic/ rheumatic symptoms was 49.5 ± 34.0 months. Of interest, the time interval between onset of rheumatic symptoms and first assessment by a rheumatologist was 16.9 ± 22.3 months. The following systemic and rheumatic symptoms were reported: arthralgia in 10, arthritis in 8 (small joints in 5, large joints in 3 affected), morning stiffness (>30 min) in 7, IBP in 1, myalgia in 7, sicca symptoms in 2, fever in 1 (new-onset FMF with heterozygous M694U mutation), class IV glomerulonephritis and polyserositis in 1 (with new-onset SLE) patient(s). Disease burden at baseline was rather high with a mean VAS pain of 65 (±12.9)/100. Laboratory analyses revealed an increased CRP in 6/11 (55%) with a mean of 10.3 ± 8.2 mg/l (<5). Autoantibody positivity was observed for ANAs in 5/10 (50%, titers ranging from 1:80 to 1:160), anti-dsDNA in 1, rheumatoid factor in only 1/10 (10%) patients, none was anti-CCP positive. Before consulting a rheumatologist, patients were treated with NSAR 3/11 (27%), 10/11 systemic glucocorticoids (91%) with an initial dose of 17.5 ± 19.5 mg and intra-articular glucocorticoids 1/11 (9%). Rheumatological assessment lead to initiation of csDMARDs (3/11 MTX, 1/11 SSZ, 1/11 HCQ, 1/11 AZA (later MMF/ rituximab in the SLE patient) 1/11 colchicine) as corticosteroid-sparing agents with good response in the majority of patients.Conclusion:Our data demonstrate heterogeneous rheumatic manifestations, partially with severe manifestations beyond arthralgia, so far not reported by oncological studies including follow-up, which might suggest an underreporting. Furthermore, despite close monitoring in tumor aftercare, our data show a considerable delay in referral to a rheumatologist and initiation of suitable treatment. Die grafische Aufmachung eines Buches trägt seit jeher maßgeblich zum Verkaufserfolg des dargestellten Werkes bei. Das weiß jeder Verleger und so gibt es auch schon seit Erfindung des Buches spezialisierte Illustratoren. Heute als Buchdesigner bekannt, nannte man Angehörige dieses Berufszweiges im ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert Maler und Schnitzer. Als weltweit erster Buchdesigner wird der niederländische Grafiker Erhard Reuwich, der als „Herr Bernharts meler und snytzer“ bekannt wurde, gesehen, weil er die Pilgerreise nach Jerusalem des Mainzer Domherren Bernhard von Breidenbach begleitete und sein darauf aufbauendes Buch bebilderte. „Die Pilgerreise ins Heilige Land“ (1486) darf als der erste auf Deutsch verfasste Reiseführer bezeichnet werden. Zu Breidenbachs Lebzeiten noch etwas so Ungewöhnliches wie auch Außergewöhnliches. Der hessische Beamte und Politiker knüpfte damit an den Erfolg seines im Jahr zuvor erschienenen Werkes „Gart der Gesundheit“ an, das seinerseits als erstes in deutscher Sprache geschriebenes medizinisches Kräuterbuch gilt.

Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, um die synonymen Verben in der Novelle ,,Johnny Schweigt” von Bernhard Hagemann aus dem Jahr 2005 herauszufinden und die Analyse der Verben zu beschreiben. In dieser Untersuchung wird die deskriptive Methode angewendet. Die untersuchung benutzt die Technik, um die Daten zu suchen, zu sammeln, zu analysieren und mit den angesammelten Phänomen zu verallgemeinen. Die Daten in dieser Untersuchung sind die Verben aus der Novelle ,,Johnny Schweigt” von Bernhard Hagemann aus dem Jahr 2005, die Synonyme haben. Die Datenquelle der Untersuchung ist die Novelle ,,Johnny Schweigt” von Bernhard Hagemann aus dem Jahr 2005. Von der Analyse der Ergebnissen in dem Kapital IV kann folgendes zusammengefasst werden, dass reine und totale Synonyme und nicht reine, aber totale Synonyme von den vier Merkmalen am meisten genutzt werden. Reine und totale Synonyme umfasst 50 (37%), reine, aber nicht totale Synonyme umfasst 23 (17%), nicht reine, aber totale Synonyme umfasst 50 (37%) und nicht reine und nicht totale Synonyme umfasst 12 (9%). Langer Atem Uwe Koch ist ein Geschäftsführer mit enger Bindung zu seinem Haus – kein kühler Manager, der nur auf Karriere aus ist. Umso schwerer fiel es uns, seinen Wunsch abzulehnen. Er möchte nicht, dass sein Robert-Koch-Krankenhaus in Apolda als Beispiel dient im Artikel über den Kliniksimulator (Seite 34). Hintergrund: Als der Ersatzkassenverband vdek vor einem Jahr Kochs Haus (195 Betten) zusammen mit anderen Kliniken als verzichtbar listete, hatte er zu kämpfen mit diversen Anfragen von potenziellen Bewerbern und Patienten. Nun sei gerade Ruhe eingekehrt, und dann diese Geschichte in der kma – da nütze es auch nichts, dass der Autor Harald Englisch mit mathematisch hergeleiteten Argumenten dem vdek widerspreche. Kochs Missbehagen ist verständlich. Doch unsere Aufgabe ist es, über die Branche zu informieren. Blind hinwegmähen über Bedenken aber wollen wir nicht. Deshalb ergänzen wir an dieser Stelle: Das Robert-Koch-Krankenhaus ist wirtschaftlich gesund und wurde gerade in den neuen Thüringer Landesbettenplan aufgenommen. Außerdem hat es bei der TK-Patientenbefragung 2014 in der Gruppe der mittelgroßen Krankenhäuser den 1. Platz erhalten in fünf Qualitätsdimensionen, darunter das Behandlungsergebnis und die medizinisch-pflegerische Versorgung. Vielleicht hängt Kochs Erfolg mit seiner Bindungsfähigkeit zusammen? Seit 1992 führt er die Geschäfte des Hauses. Bernhard Ziegler, seit Mitte der 90er Jahre Krankenhausdirektor des Klinikums Itzehoe, ist noch so ein Beispiel. Fallen Ihnen, liebe Leser, weitere ein? All we hear is radio gaga, radio googoo, radio blahblah Radio, what’s new? Radio, someone still loves you Queen, “Radio Gaga” Someone still loves radio—and more people are beginning to discover its online form, Webcasting, as an alternative to terrestrial radio stations. Online radio allows listeners to swap local radio fare for more exotic programming, turning everyday PCs into world receivers, and offers a large variety of special-interest Webcasts catering to very genre-specific tastes. (Spinner.com, one of the largest commercial Webcasters, offers some 175 channels from Abstract Beats to Zydeco, for example.) For independent music labels whose content would never be played on mainstream terrestrial radio, Webcasting has become a major source of exposure. Unlike filesharing, however, Webcasts remain largely ephemeral: no permanent copy of radio content can be created on the user’s computer unless authorised by the Webcaster, or unless users specifically seek out software like Streambox VCR which circumvents such restrictions. Yet in the U.S. the year 2002 saw a protracted battle for the future of webcasting, waged between the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and its royalty collection agency SoundExchange on one side, and a loose coalition of Webcasters on the other. Mirroring the sustained attack on filesharing services, the battle over Webcasting demonstrates once again the hardline position the RIAA has adopted in its dealings with new media music services. In the filesharing arena, we have seen the demise of early services such as Napster and their replacement with deliberately crippled, recording industry-run alternatives or more powerful underground services. In its approach to Webcasting, the RIAA similarly attempted to push through a solution that would have made Internet radio unaffordable to any but the major players in the industry. Its involvement in this fight provides a useful illustration of the shortcomings of the music industry’s strategy for dealing with new, Internet-based media. Casus Belli Prior to 2002, the battlelines had been drawn already. When the grandly named Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) became law in the U.S. in late October 1998, it introduced a requirement for royalties to be paid by online stations. Rates for such fees were to be determined according to a ‘willing buyer/willing seller’ model—in other words, they were expected to reflect what would be ‘standard’ fees in an established digital media market, as determined by an independent Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP). Once set, royalties dating back to the date of passage of the DMCA were then to be paid retroactively by Webcasters. While agreements over performing rights (royalties due to the authors of copyrighted material) resulted in a requirement for Webcasters to pay an average rate of around 3% of their annual revenue, no decision had yet been made about royalties for sound recordings (due to the actual performers of a specific piece) as late as 2001, raising fears of a significant backlog of accumulated fees for at least three years suddenly burdening an industry which had yet to prove its profitability. Some Webcasters even pre-emptively began pulling the plug on their channels (see e.g. Borland). The Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP) on Webcasting held its deliberations on a royalty fee structure during the second half of 2001, with submissions by the key parties. The RIAA demanded a payment of around 0.4¢ per song/ per listener. By contrast the Digital Media Association, on behalf of Webcasters, offered 0.14¢ per song/per hour (regardless of the number of listeners). The CARP recommendation markedly reduced the RIAA’s proposed fees, but retained the suggested per song/per listener royalty structure. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington rejected this recommendation but replaced it with a virtually identical model of 0.07¢ per song/per listener for commercial Webcasters, or about 18% of the original RIAA rate (Copyright Office). This still meant significant royalty fees for Webcasters: assuming an average of 10 songs per hour and 100 listeners per channel at any one time, Webcasters broadcasting only one channel, 24 hours a day, would have to pay around $6,100 per year (and this retroactively back to 1998), even though this small audience would be unlikely to generate any income. This fee punished stations for becoming moderately popular, as increasing average audience to 1000 would increase payable royalties to $61,000, while profit might still prove elusive. This was prohibitively expensive for smaller, start-up players, and contributed to a growing list of Webcasters switching off their streams in the belief that they had lost their fight for survival. By contrast U.S. terrestrial radio stations are exempt altogether from paying any royalties to the RIAA because their work is seen as providing a ‘promotional service’ to the music industry. Examining the RIAA Strategy and Its Motives Any negotiator worth their salt will make an opening offer aimed at maximising the eventual outcome of the negotiation, so the initial RIAA demand of 0.4¢ per song/per listener should perhaps be seen as ambitious. Nonetheless, the RIAA’s entire strategy in this conflict seemed geared more towards the terminal frustration of hopeful Webcaster aspirations. The strongest evidence to suggest that the RIAA never negotiated in good faith stems from June 2002 comments by erstwhile Broadcast.com founder Mark Cuban, who in 1999 was involved in negotiating a deal between his company (then newly acquired by Yahoo!) and the RIAA to set royalty rates for Broadcast.com streams. Cuban revealed that buyer and seller in this case were willing first and foremost to price out of the market any potential competition to Broadcast.com from smaller, start-up Webcast operators—this was the reason for choosing the per-song/per-listener fee structure over a percentage-of-revenue approach: I hated the [per-song/listener] price points and explained why they were too high. HOWEVER, … I, as Broadcast.com, didn’t want percent-of-revenue pricing. Why? Because it meant every “Tom, Dick, and Harry” webcaster could come in and undercut our pricing because we had revenue and they didn’t. … The Yahoo! deal I worked on, if it resembles the deal the CARP ruling was built on, was designed so that there would be less competition, and so that small webcasters who needed to live off of a “percentage-of-revenue” to survive, couldn’t. (qtd. in Maloney & Hanson) Therefore, the RIAA consciously presented to the CARP a pricing structure which was not representative of an agreement between willing buyer and seller, but rather an agreement designed to achieve specific objectives: to punish very small operators for becoming more popular, hence discouraging hobbyists from turning professional; make Webcasting unaffordable for independent, small to medium operations; open the market only to major players with significant revenue streams; encourage amalgamation of independent stations into larger networks, and incorporate networks into the bigger media organisations. Indeed, Levy cites the “testimony of an RIAA-backed economist who told the government fee panel [CARP] that a dramatic shakeout in Webcasting is ‘inevitable and desirable because it will bring about market consolidation’”—and ‘consolidation’ (thus excluding small business from the Webcasting market) was clearly the underlying motive of RIAA strategy during the fights of 2002. Reasons for such anti-competitive policies are speculative but the conduct suggests that it represents the interests of an oligopoly of major entertainment producers, defending their interests from independent and alternative upstarts emerging with the information age, whilst claiming to protect the entire music community from exploitation by digital media operators. For three years running music industry sales have been in decline, and “forecasts see sales sliding another six percent in 2003—a fall felt most by the big five music giants—Universal, Sony, Warner, EMI and BMG—which account for 70 percent of sales” (Warner & Marr). The transnationals have consistently attributed this decline to the impact of CD burning, filesharing and other Internet technologies for music transmission. Yet the RIAA was successful in shutting down Napster, and there are a host of other reasons for the downturn: There have been no major musical trends to emerge as major drivers of music sales since the advent of grunge in the early 1990s--“while record sales are dropping, they are also spreading into diverse genres” (Childress), Western economies have continued to skirt recession with a marked decrease in consumer spending, 15 years after the introduction of the CD medium, the initial waves of listeners replacing their vinyl records with CD re-releases and remasters (once a major source of income for labels) have subsided, CD prices remain high, even compared to DVD movie releases, and There is a growing backlash against the practices of an “industry founded on exploitation, oiled by deceit, riven with theft and fuelled by greed” (Fripp 9) and there are calls to boycott major labels altogether, and increased political scrutiny. Hence some observers have read the RIAA’s attacks on filesharing and Webcasts as the actions of an industry fighting for its own survival. Wired quotes former Billboard editor Timothy White as saying that 2003 “could determine whether the music business as we know it survives” (reported in Maloney, “Wired”), and this sentiment is echoed in other reports on the state of the music industry. Alternatively, analysts have noted “the industry released around 27,000 titles in 2001, down from a peak of 38,900 in 1999. Since year-on-year unit sales have dropped a mere 10.3 per cent, it’s clear that demand has held up extremely well: despite higher prices, consumers retain the CD buying habit” (Orlowski). Whether signs of an industry in decline or not, the RIAA’s uncompromising policies in its fight against unpoliced Internet music technologies have caused headaches amongst its own supporters. (A recent Wired article speaks of “civil war inside Sony” over such issues—see Rose.) The Time-Warner-Netscape-AOL conglomerate might find the benefits from its support of the RIAA will be negated by the new royalty fees required of Spinner.com in its new incarnation as ‘Radio@Netscape Plus’, or by the downturn in AOL Broadband’s ability to sign up customers as incentives such as access to filesharing and Web radio dry up. Postscript: Conflict Resolution in the Webcast Wars (?) Without significant policy shifts by the RIAA it has fallen to U.S. politicians to force an uneasy truce in the Webcast conflict. This intervention was prompted by dissatisfaction with the industry’s disregard for the stated aim of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to cultivate not hinder business in new Internet technologies and the view that CARP had been tricked into accepting a flawed Yahoo!/RIAA deal as the basis for its fee structure recommendations. Following several attempts at legislation and emergency negotiations small Webcasters won a reprieve from the per song/per listener royalty structure which they had been threatened with, and will now pay a percentage of their revenue. This agreement is built on the “Small Webcaster Settlement Act,” which acknowledges that small Webcasters “have expressed their desire for a fee based on a percentage of revenue,” it rejects the CARP recommendations and the Librarian’s rulings as unsuitable for small operators, and instead requires the RIAA and small commercial Webcasters to develop their own structures in the spirit of this bill. While this solution generates division of the Webcast market into smaller and larger operators (and possibly makes the move from the first to the second group, who do pay per song/per listener royalties, all the more daunting), the new structure should be able to ensure its aim of protecting content diversity in Webcasting. That is until the industry finds a new battleground on which to engage Internet-based music technologies. Introduction Nun habe ich Euch genug geschrieben, diesen Brief wenn sei [sic] lesen würden, dann würde ich den Genickschuß bekommen.Now I have written you enough, this letter if they would read it, I would get the neck shot. (M., all translations from German sources and quotations by the author) When the German soldier Otto M. wrote these lines from Russia to his family on 3 September 1943 during the Second World War, he knew that his war letter would not be subject to the National Socialist censorship apparatus. The letter contains, inter alia, detailed information about the course of the war on the front, troop locations, and warnings about the Nazi regime. M., as he wrote in the letter, smuggled it past the censorship via a “comrade”. As a German soldier, M. was a member of the Volksgemeinschaft—a National Socialist concept that drew a “racist and anti-Semitic borderline” (Wildt 48)—and was thus not socially excluded due to his status. Nevertheless, in the sentence quoted above, M. anticipates possible future consequences of his deviant actions, which would be carried out by “them”—potentially leading to his violent death. This article investigates how social and societal exclusion is brought forth by everyday media practices such as writing letters. After an introduction to the thesis under discussion, I will briefly outline the linguistic research on National Socialism that underlies the approach presented. In the second section, the key concepts of agency and dispositif applied in this work are discussed. This is followed by two sections in which infrastructural and interactional practices of exclusion are analysed. The article closes with some concluding remarks. During the Second World War, Wehrmacht soldiers and their relatives could not write and receive letters that were not potentially subject to controls. Therefore, the blunt openness with which M. anticipated the brutal sanctions of behavioural deviations in the correspondence quoted above was an exception in the everyday practice of war letter communication. This article will thus pursue the following thesis: private communication in war letters was subject to specific discourse conditions under National Socialism, and this brought forth excluding agency, which has two intertwined readings. Firstly, “excluding” is to be understood as an attribute of “agency” in the sense of an acting entity that either is included and potentially excludes or is excluded due to its ascribed agency. For example, German soldiers who actively participated in patriotic service were included in the Volksgemeinschaft. By contrast, Jews or Communists, to name but a few groups that, from the perspective of racist Nazi ideology, did not contribute to the community, were excluded from it. Such excluding agencies are based on specific practices of dispositional arrangement, which I refer to as infrastructural exclusion of agency. Secondly, excluding agency describes a linguistic practice that developed under National Socialism and has an equally stabilising effect on it. Excluding agency means that agents, and hence protagonists, are excluded by means of linguistic mitigation and omission. This second reading emphasises practices of linguistic construction of agency in interaction, which is described as interactional exclusion of agency. In either sense, exclusion is inextricably tied to the notion of agency, which is illustrated in this article by using data from field post letters of the Second World War. Social exclusion, along with its most extreme manifestations under fascism, is both legitimised and carried out predominantly through discursive practices. This includes for the public domain, on the one hand, executive language use such as in laws, decrees, orders, court hearings, and verdicts, and on the other hand, texts such as ideological writings, speeches, radio addresses, folk literature, etc. Linguistic research on National Socialism and its mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion has long focussed on the power of a regulated public use of language that seemed to be shaped by a few protagonists, most notably Hitler and Goebbels (Schlosser; Scholl). More recent works, however, are increasingly devoted to the differentiation of heterogeneous communities of practice, which were primarily established through discursive practices and are manifested accordingly in texts of that time (Horan, Practice). Contrary to a justifiably criticised “exculpation of the speakers” (Sauer 975) by linguistic research, which focusses on language but not on situated, interactional language use, such a perspective is increasingly interested in “discourse in National Socialism, with a particular emphasis on language use in context as a shared, communicative phenomenon” (Horan, Letter 45). To understand the phenomenon of social and societal exclusion, which was constitutive for National Socialism, it is also necessary to analyse those discursive practices of inclusion and exclusion through which the speakers co-constitute everyday life. I will do this by relating the discourse conditions, based on Foucault’s concept of dispositif (Confessions 194), to the agency of the correspondents of war letters, i.e. field post letters. On Agency and Dispositif Agency and dispositif are key concepts for the analysis of social exclusion, because they can be applied to analyse the situated practices of exclusion both in terms of the different capacities for action of various agents, i.e. acting entities, and the inevitably asymmetrical arrangement within which actions are performed. Let me first, very briefly, outline some linguistic conceptions of agency. While Ahearn states that “agency refers to the socioculturally mediated capacity to act” (28) and thus conceives agency as a potential, Duranti understands agency “as the property of those entities (i) that have some degree of control over their own behavior, (ii) whose actions in the world affect other entities’ (and sometimes their own), and (iii) whose actions are the object of evaluation (e.g. in terms of their responsibility for a given outcome)” (453). Deppermann considers agency to be a means of social and situational positioning: “‘agency’ is to capture properties of the subject as agent, that is, its role with respect to the events in which it is involved” (429–30). This is done by linguistic attribution. Following Duranti, this analysis is based on the understanding that agency is established by the ascription of action to an entity which is thereby made or considered accountable for the action. This allows a practice-theoretical reference to Garfinkel’s concept of accountability and identifies agentive practices as “visibly-rational-and-reportable-for-all-practical purposes” (7). The writing of letters in wartime is one such reflexive discursive practice through which agents constitute social reality by means of ascribing agency. The concept of semantic roles (Fillmore; von Polenz), offers another, distinctly linguistic access to agency. By semantic roles, agency in situated interaction is established syntactically and semantically. Put simply, a distinction is made between an Agent, as someone who performs an action, and a Patient, as someone to whom an action occurs (von Polenz 170; semantic roles such as Agent, Patient, Experiencer, etc. are capitalised by convention). Using linguistic data from war letters, this concept is discussed in more detail below. In the following, “field post” is considered as dispositif, by which Foucault means a thoroughly heterogeneous ensemble consisting of discourses, institutions, architectural forms, regulatory decisions, laws, administrative measures, scientific statements, philosophical, moral and philanthropic propositions – in short, the said as much as the unsaid. Such are the elements of the apparatus [dispositif]. The apparatus [dispositif] itself is the system of relations that can be established between these elements. (Foucault, Confessions 194) The English translation of the French “dispositif” as “apparatus” encourages an understanding of dispositif as a rather rigid structure. In contrast, the field post service of the Second World War will be used here to show how such dispositifs enable practices of exclusion or restrict access to practices of inclusion, while these characteristics themselves are in turn established by practices or, as Foucault calls them, procedures (Foucault, Discourse). An important and potentially enlightening notion related to dispositif is that of agencement, which in turn is borrowed from Deleuze and Guattari and was further developed in particular in actor-network theory (Çalışkan and Callon; Gherardi). What Çalışkan and Callon state about markets serves as a general description of agencement, which can be defined as an “arrangement of heterogeneous constituents that deploys the following: rules and conventions; technical devices; metrological systems; logistical infrastructures; texts, discourses and narratives …; technical and scientific knowledge (including social scientific methods), as well as the competencies and skills embodied in living beings” (3). This resembles Foucault’s concept of dispositif (Foucault, Confessions; see above), which “denotes a heterogeneous ensemble of discursive and nondiscursive elements with neither an originary subject not [sic] a determinant causality” (Coté 384). Considered morphosemantically, agencement expresses an important interrelation: in that it is derived from both the French agencer (to construct; to arrange) and agence (agency; cf. Hardie and MacKenzie 58) and is concretised and nominalised by the suffix -ment, agencement elegantly integrates structure and action according to Giddens’s ‘duality of structure’. While this tying aspect certainly contributes to a better understanding of dispositional arrangements and should therefore be considered, agencement, as applied in actor-network theory, emphasises above all “the fact that agencies and arrangements are not separate” (Çalışkan and Callon) and is, moreover, often employed to ascribe agency to material objects, things, media, etc. This approach has proven to be very fruitful for analyses of socio-technical arrangements in actor-network theory and practice theory (Çalışkan and Callon; Gherardi). However, within the presented discourse-oriented study on letter writing and field post in National Socialism, a clear analytical differentiation between agency and arrangement, precisely in order to point out their interrelation, is essential to analyse practices of exclusion. This is why I prefer dispositif to agencement as the analytical concept here. Infrastructural Exclusion of Agency in Field Post Letters In the Second World War, writing letters between the “homeland” and the “frontline” was a fundamental everyday media practice with an estimated total of 30 to 40 billion letters in Germany (Kilian 97). War letters were known as field post (Feldpost), which was processed by the field post service. The dispositif “field post” was, in opposition to the traditional postal service, subject to specific conditions regarding charges, transport, and above all censorship. No transportation costs arose for field post letters up to a weight of 250 grams. Letters could only be sent by or to soldiers with a field post number that encoded the addresses of the field post offices. Only soldiers who were deployed outside the Reich’s borders received a field post number (Kilian 114). Thus, the soldiers were socially included as interactants due to their military status. The entire organisation of the field post was geared towards enabling members of the Volksgemeinschaft to communicatively shape, maintain, and continue their social relationships during the war (Bergerson et al.). Applying Foucault, the dispositif “field post” establishes selection and exclusion mechanisms in which “procedures of exclusion” (Discourse 52) become manifest, two of which are to be related to the field post: “exclusion from discourse” and “scarcity of speaking subjects” (Spitzmüller and Warnke 73). Firstly, “procedures of exclusion ensure that only certain statements can be made in discourse” (Spitzmüller and Warnke 73). This exclusion procedure ought to be implemented by controlling and, ultimately, censoring field post letters. Reviews were carried out by censorship offices (Feldpostprüfstellen), which were military units independent of the field post offices responsible for delivery. Censorship initially focussed on military information. However, “in the course of the war, censorship shifted from a control measure aimed at defence towards a political-ideological review” (Kilian 101). Critical remarks could be legally prosecuted and punished with prison, penitentiary, or death (Kilian 99). Hence, it is assumed that self-censorship played a role not only for public media, such as newspapers, but also for writing private letters (Dodd). As the introductory quotation from Otto M. shows, writers who spread undesirable information in their letters anticipated the harshest consequences. In this respect, randomised censorship—although only a very small proportion of the high volume of mail was actually opened by censors (Kilian)—established a permanent disposition of control that resulted in a potentially discourse-excluding social stratification of private communication. Secondly, the dispositif “field post” was inherently exclusive and excluding, as those who did not belong to the Volksgemeinschaft could not use the service and thus could not acquire agentive capacity. The “scarcity of speaking subjects” (Spitzmüller and Warnke 73) was achieved by restricting participation in the field post system to members of the Volksgemeinschaft. Since agency is based on the most basic prerequisite, namely the ability to act linguistically at all, the mere possibility of exercising agency was infrastructurally restricted by the field post system. Excluding people from “agency-through-language” means excluding them from an “agency of an existential sort” (Duranti 455), which is described here, regarding the field post system, as infrastructural exclusion of agency. Interactional Exclusion of Agency in Field Post Letters In this section, I will elaborate how agency is brought forth interactionally through linguistic means on the basis of data from a field post corpus that was compiled in the project “Linguistic Social History 1933 to 1945” (Kämper). The aim of the project is an actor-based description of discursive practices and patterns at the time of National Socialism, which takes into account the fact that society in the years 1933 to 1945 consisted of heterogeneous communities of practice (Horan, Practice). Letter communication is considered to be an interaction that is characterised by mediated indexicality, accountability, reflexivity, sequentiality, and reciprocity (Dang-Anh) and is performed as situated social practice (Barton and Hall). The corpus of field letters examined here provides access to the everyday communication of members of the ‘integrated society’, i.e. those who were neither high-ranking members of the Nazi apparatus nor exposed to the repressions of the fascist dictatorship. The corpus consists of about 3,500 letters and about 2.5 million tokens. The data were obtained by digitising letter editions using OCR scans and in cooperation with the field post archive of the Museum for Communication Berlin (cf. sources below). We combine qualitative and quantitative methods, the latter providing heuristic indicators for in-depth hermeneutical analysis (Felder; Teubert). We apply corpus linguistic methods such as keyword, collocation and concordance analysis to the digitised full texts in order to analyse the data intersubjectively by means of corpus-based hermeneutic discourse analysis (Dang-Anh and Scholl). However, the selected excerpts of the corpus do not comprise larger data sets or complete sequences, but isolated fragments. Nevertheless, they illustrate the linguistic (non-)constitution of agency and thus distinctively exemplify exclusionary practices in field post letter writing. From a linguistic point of view, the exclusion of actors from action is achieved syntactically and semantically by deagentivisation (Bernárdez; von Polenz 186), as will be shown below. The following lines were written by Albert N. to his sister Johanna S. and are dated 25 June 1941, shortly after the beginning of the German Wehrmacht’s military campaign in Russia (Russlandfeldzug) a few days earlier. Vor den russ. Gefangenen bekommt man einen Ekel, d.h. viele Gefangene werden nicht gemacht.One gets disgusted by the Russian prisoners, i.e. many prisoners are not made. (N.) In the first part of the utterance, “mitigation of agency” (Duranti 465) is carried out using the impersonal pronoun “man” (“one”) which does not specify its referent. Instead, by means of deagentivisation, the scope of the utterance is generalised to an indefinite in‑group of speakers, whereby the use of the impersonal pronoun implies that the proposition is valid or generally accepted. Moreover, the use of “one” generalises the emotional expression “disgust”, thus suggesting that the aversive emotion is a self-evident affect experienced by everyone who can be subsumed under “one”. In particular, this includes the author, who is implicitly displayed as primarily perceiving the emotion in question. This reveals a fundamental practice of inclusion and exclusion, the separating distinction between “us”/“we” and “them”/“the others” (Wodak). In terms of semantic roles, the inclusive and generalised formal Experiencer “one” is opposed to the Causative “Russian prisoner” in an exclusionary manner, implicitly indicating the prisoners as the cause of disgust. The subsequent utterance is introduced by “i.e.”, which marks the causal link between the two phrases. The wording “many prisoners are not made” strongly suggests that it refers to homicides, i.e. executions carried out at the beginning of the military campaign in Russia by German troops (Reddemann 222). The depiction of a quasi-universal disgust in the first part establishes a “negative characterization of the out-group” (Wodak 33) which, in the expressed causal relation with the second phrase, seems to morally legitimise or at least somehow justify the implied killings. The passive form entirely omits an acting entity. Here, deagentivisation obscures the agency of the perpetrators. However, this is not the only line between acting and non-acting entities the author draws. The omission of an agent, even the impersonal “one”, in the second part, and the fact that there is no talk of self-experienceable emotions, but war crimes are hinted at in a passive sentence, suggest the exclusion of oneself as a joint agent of the indicated actions. As further data from the corpus indicate, war crimes are usually not ascribed to the writer or his own unit as the agents but are usually attributed to “others” or not at all. Was Du von Juden schreibst, ist uns schon länger bekannt. Sie werden im Osten angesiedelt.What you write about Jews is already known to us for some time. They are being settled in the East. (G.) In this excerpt from a letter, which Ernst G. wrote to his wife on 22 February 1942, knowledge about the situation of the Jews in the war zone is discussed. The passage appears quite isolated with its cotext in the letter revolving around quite different, trivial, everyday topics. Apparently, G. refers in his utterance to an earlier letter from his wife, which has not been preserved and is therefore not part of the corpus. “Jews” are those about whom the two agents, the soldier and his wife, write, whereas “us” refers to the soldiers at the front. In the second part, agency is again obscured by deagentivisation. While “they” anaphorically refers to “Jews” as Patients, the agents of their alleged resettlement remain unnamed in this “agent-less passive construction” (Duranti 466). Jews are depicted here as objects being handled—without any agency of their own. The persecution of the Jews and the executions carried out on the Russian front (Reddemann 222), including those of Jews, are euphemistically played down here as “settlements”. “Trivialization” and “denial” are two common discursive practices of exclusion (Wodak 134) and emerge here, as interactional exclusion of agency, in one of their most severe manifestations. Conclusion Social and societal exclusion, as has been shown, are predominantly legitimised as well as constituted, maintained, and perpetuated by discursive practices. Field post letters can be analysed both in terms of the infrastructure—which is itself constituted by infrastructuring practices and is thus not rigid but dynamic—that underlies excluding letter-writing practices in times of war, and the extent to which linguistic excluding practices are performed in the letters. It has been shown that agency, which is established by the ascription of action to an entity, is a central concept for the analysis of practices of exclusion. While I propose the division into infrastructural and interactional exclusion of agency, it must be pointed out that this can only be an analytical distinction and both bundles of practices, that of infrastructuring and that of interacting, are intertwined and are to be thought of in relation to each other. Bringing together the two concepts of agency and dispositif, despite the fact that they are of quite different origins, allows an analysis of exclusionary practices, which I hope does justice to the relation of interaction and infrastructure. By definition, exclusion occurs against the background of an asymmetrical arrangement within which exclusionary practices are carried out. Thus, dispositif is understood as an arranged but flexible condition, wherein agency, as a discursively ascribed or infrastructurally arranged property, unfolds. Social and societal exclusion, which were constitutive for National Socialism, were accomplished not only in public media but also in field post letters. Writing letters was a fundamental everyday media practice and the field post was a central social medium during the National Socialist era. However, exclusion occurred on different infrastructural and interactional levels. As shown, it was possible to be excluded by agency, which means exclusion by societal status and role. People could linguistically perform an excluding agency by constituting a division between “us” and “them”. Also, specific discourses were excluded by the potential control and censorship of communication by the authorities, and those who did not suppress agency, for example by self-censoring, feared prosecution. Moreover, the purely linguistic practices of exclusion not only constituted or legitimised the occasionally fatal demarcations drawn under National Socialism, but also concealed and trivialised them. As discussed, it was the perpetrators whose agency was excluded in war letters, which led to a mitigation of their actions. In addition, social actors were depreciated and ostracised through deagentivisation, mitigation and omission of agency. In extreme cases of social exclusion, linguistic deagentivisation even prepared or resulted in the revocation of the right to exist of entire social groups. The German soldier Otto M. feared fatal punishment because he did not communicatively act according to the social stratification of the then regime towards a Volksgemeinschaft in a field post letter. This demonstrates how thin the line is between inclusion and exclusion in a fascist dictatorship. I hope to have shown that the notion of excluding agency can provide an approach to identifying and analytically understanding such inclusion and exclusion practices in everyday interactions in media as dispositional arrangements. However, more research needs to be done on the vast yet unresearched sources of everyday communication in the National Socialist era, in particular by applying digital means to discourse analysis (Dang-Anh and Scholl).
