In this thesis we describe various regimes of practical and theoretical significance that arise in the laminar two-dimensional flow of a layer of an incompressible viscous fluid over a solid surface at high Reynolds number. In Part I we consider steady flows over a distorted rigid surface. Almost uniform flows are considered first, when the distortion is sufficient to provoke a viscous-inviscid interaction, and therefore boundary-layer separation. A LiDAR instrument to monitor the evolution of the urban boundary layer capping inversion over Manchester has been developed from a previous instrument. This LiDAR uses a frequency-tripled Nd:YAG laser, operating at low pulse energy but high repetition frequency. Rotational Raman scattering of this laser light is parsed into two channels by narrowband interference filters, before detection by photomultiplier tubes operating in photon-counting mode.
