Mutations in the copper zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1), an important antioxidant, have been found in patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Phytoremediation, i.e., the use of plants to clean up contaminated soil, may serve as a feasible alternative if a high-biomass crop can be found that accumulates metals to a high.degree. The dry weights of whole plants were decreased as the cadmium concentrations were increased and it showed a critical concentration at 60 mM. The absorbed cadmium in plants was accumulated mainly in roots, followed by stems, young leaves and old leaves. Chlorosis between small veins was observed in young leaves of cadmium- affected plants.
