Résumé :
This chapter shows how Spinoza’s ethics completes his conceptualist metaphysics, arguing that Spinoza privileges some of the plentiful ways of conceiving things over others on broadly practical grounds. It is in the self-interest of agents to conceive other things, as well as themselves, in the broadest, most inclusive ways. Spinoza thinks that the way to become a more virtuous agent is to reconceive oneself, a process that results in fundamental changes in an agent’s self-identity. Drawing on parallel contemporary work by Harry Frankfurt, it argues that Spinoza’s call to moral transformation is ultimately a call to a new self-identity, one that is far more powerful and stable, and perhaps even eternal. Although Spinoza holds out hope for our salvific transformation, he remains deeply pessimistic that we will ever enjoy much of it.

Résumé :
Chapter 4 introduces the Schwinger Action Principle, along with associated particle and potential sources. While the methods described here originally arose in the relativistic quantum field theory of elementary particle physics, they have also profoundly advanced our understanding of non-relativistic many-particle physics. The Schwinger Action Principle is a quantum-mechanical variational principle that closely parallels the Hamilton Principle of Least Action of classical mechanics, generalizing it to include the role of quantum operators as generalized coordinates and momenta. As such, it unifies all aspects of quantum theory, incorporating Hamilton equations of motion for those operators and the Heisenberg equation, as well as producing the canonical equal-time commutation/anticommutation relations. It yields dynamical coupled field equations for the creation and annihilation operators of the interacting many-body system by variational differentiation of the Hamiltonian with respect to the field operators. Also, equations for the development of matrix elements (underlying Green’s functions) are derived using variations with respect to particle and potential “sources” (and coupling strength). Variational calculus, involving impressed potentials, c-number coordinates and fields, also quantum operator coordinates and fields, is discussed in full detail. Attention is given to the introduction of fermion and boson particle sources and their use in variational calculus.

Soni, Jayesh M. Exchange of Retrograde Occluded Nephroureteral Catheter Through Ileal Conduits Without Losing Access. Sous la direction de S. Lowell Kahn, Bulent Arslan et Abdulrahman Masrani. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199986071.003.0091.

Résumé :
A retrograde nephroureteral catheter is placed in patients who have undergone cystectomy with ileal conduit formation. An ileal conduit connects the ureters to a loop of bowel that is then secured to the anterior abdominal wall to allow for ostomy bag drainage. Patients may develop complications in the form of stricture at the ureteroenteric junction causing obstruction. These patients may need temporary diversion of urine through a nephrostomy catheter. The retrograde nephroureteral catheter is a better option because it provides a less invasive and safer approach. Unlike the routine exchange of a nephroureteral catheter over the wire through the ileal conduit, wire access through the catheter to the renal pelvis is sometimes difficult or impossible due to encrustation with calcium deposition, catheter fracture, and catheter migration. Alternative techniques to avoid these complications include the use of a parallel glidewire or use of a larger sheath over the catheter or the catheter snare.

Résumé :
This essay argues against an approach—one I call cognitivism—that tries to understand synchronic plan rationality as, at bottom a matter of theoretical rationality of belief. This approach is taken by, among others, Gilbert Harman, J. David Velleman, and R. Jay Wallace. I explain several problems for such cognitivism: there are problems posed by the possibility of false beliefs about what one intends; and there are problems posed by the need to distinguish intended means from expected side effects. In response to a challenge from Velleman, I sketch an alternative approach, one that sees these planning norms as fundamentally practical norms and that notes a parallel with Peter Strawson’s treatment of the framework of reactive attitudes.

Résumé :
This chapter discusses the ways in which Latino GBT activists live their lives as “Latinos” in a racial social system. In a parallel fashion to stigma related to gender nonconformity, it treats the racial labeling of groups as stigma. That is, to call someone Latino or to use the label Latino is part of the process of marking differences between groups, creating social separation, and establishing discriminatory practices. This stigmatization reinforces, if not creates, relations of power. From the viewpoint of the labeled group, stigma can take the form of actual experiences; perceptions about how others or the society at large see them; and internalization of the negative views others have in the self.

Résumé :
Chapter 12 contains the conclusions of the study. It brings together arguments from previous chapters showing how they interact to explain how and when armed groups can most legitimately be held bound by human rights law. In doing so, it draws conclusions on the added value of human rights law vis-à-vis international humanitarian law and the legal personality of armed groups under international human rights law. The chapter also contains practical recommendations for accountability mechanisms on how best they can develop a future jurisprudence on the topic. In its concluding remarks, it puts forward the view that there is value in pursuing parallel accountability processes (e.g. Geneva Call), in efforts to secure the accountability of armed groups under international law.

Résumé :
The small Slave Coast between the river Volta and Lagos, and especially its central part around Ouidah, was the epicentre of the slave trade in West Africa. But it was also an inhospitable, surf-ridden coastline, subject to crashing breakers and devoid of permanent human settlement. Nor was it easily accessible from the interior due to a lagoon which ran parallel to the coast. The local inhabitants were not only sheltered against incursions from the sea, but were also locked off from it. Yet, paradoxically, this small coastline witnessed a thriving long-term commercial relationship between Europeans and Africans, based on the trans-Atlantic slave trade. How did it come about? How was it all organized? Dahomey is usually cited as the Slave Coast's archetypical slave raiding and slave trading polity. An originally inland realm, it was a latecomer to the slave trade, and simply incorporated a pre-existing system by dint of military prowess, which ultimately was to prove radically counterproductive. Dahomey, which never controlled more than half of the region we call the Slave Coast, represented an anomaly in the local setting, an anomaly the author seeks to define and to explain.

Résumé :
Monoidal category theory serves as a powerful framework for describing logical aspects of quantum theory, giving an abstract language for parallel and sequential composition and a conceptual way to understand many high-level quantum phenomena. Here, we lay the foundations for this categorical quantum mechanics, with an emphasis on the graphical calculus that makes computation intuitive. We describe superposition and entanglement using biproducts and dual objects, and show how quantum teleportation can be studied abstractly using these structures. We investigate monoids, Frobenius structures and Hopf algebras, showing how they can be used to model classical information and complementary observables. We describe the CP construction, a categorical tool to describe probabilistic quantum systems. The last chapter introduces higher categories, surface diagrams and 2-Hilbert spaces, and shows how the language of duality in monoidal 2-categories can be used to reason about quantum protocols, including quantum teleportation and dense coding. Previous knowledge of linear algebra, quantum information or category theory would give an ideal background for studying this text, but it is not assumed, with essential background material given in a self-contained introductory chapter. Throughout the text, we point out links with many other areas, such as representation theory, topology, quantum algebra, knot theory and probability theory, and present nonstandard models including sets and relations. All results are stated rigorously and full proofs are given as far as possible, making this book an invaluable reference for modern techniques in quantum logic, with much of the material not available in any other textbook.
