Résumé :
The study sought to determine the role that the National Archives of Namibia plays in the management of audio visuals in an attempt to curtail the deterioration of audio-visual archives which are kept in various organisations, some of which are unknown to the National Archives of Namibia. A qualitative method was applied in the study. The case study used the interpretive paradigm which enabled the researcher to triangulate the data collection instruments. Interviews, questionnaires and observation checklists were used to collect data. Content analysis was carried out to analyse data from interviews, document review and the observations. While Excel software provided descriptive statistics on graphs. The results indicated that AV materials were created and stored by various organisations, including the National Archives of Namibia, which oversees the management of all records. The Archives Act (Act 12 of 1992), section 4(1), gives a mandate to the National Archives of Namibia for control over records and archives of all formats in government offices, offices of local authorities and statutory institutions. Nonetheless, there are instances where AV materials are not deposited or stored in appropriate conditions. It is also apparent that different cataloguing and classification systems are used by different organisations. It is clear that most of the organisations manage AV materials in the same way as paper formats records. There is also an inadequately skilled workforce who were given a responsibility to manage AV materials. The study was limited to the Khomas region. Since there are 14 regions in Namibia, the findings cannot be generalized to other regions. Future studies should cover other regions. The results point to the need for the National Archives of Namibia to adopt an integrated approach to the management of AV records. This will require the NAN to work in cooperation with public sector institutions and empower them to preserve AV materials while, at the same time, they continue to deposit copies with the National Archives of Namibia. Unlike previous studies on management of audio visual archives in Namibia, this study included other organisations. The results give a clear picture of the role the National Archives plays in the management of audio visual records and archives.

Résumé :
The Herbert Sondheim, Inc. scrapbooks in the New School Archives and Special Collections document the activities of a notable early to mid-20th-century New York-based manufacturer of ready-to-wear women's fashions. A precursor to the contemporary fast fashion industry, Sondheim's employees sketched and kept detailed notes on materials and construction of garments produced by Parisian designers, which the firm then adapted into more affordable and easily obtainable apparel for American consumers. A retrospective visual materials cataloguing project resulting from a graduate student's interest in the collection led to the online availability of over 1200 sketches of fashion adaptations and challenged archives staff to develop appropriate descriptive metadata for a fragmented, ambiguous and complex documentary record.

Résumé :
This paper identifies and describes five major varieties of Cameroon English (hereafter CamE) in Cameroon audio-visual materials. These five ‘audio-lects’ are Pidginized, Mainstream, Near-RP, Americanized and Frenchized CamE. The paper argues that these audio-lects mostly tie with real-life CamE, but differ from the latter phonostylistically. The utterances of 80 Cameroonian actors, actresses and musicians excerpted from 100 audio-visual materials constituted data for the paper. The audio-visual materials and artists were randomly selected to represent, as much as possible, CamE speakers from different socio-cultural spheres within Cameroon. The findings indicate that these audio-lects largely resemble real-life CamE varieties, which reflect the socio-ethnic, academic and professional diversity of CamE speakers.

Résumé :
The biodeterioration of audio–visual materials is a huge problem, as it can cause incalculable losses. To preserve these cultural heritage objects for future generations, it is necessary to determine the main agents of biodeterioration. This study focuses on identifying fungi, both from the air and smears from photographs and cinematographic films that differ in the type of carrier and binder, using high-throughput sequencing approaches. The alpha diversity measures of communities present on all types of carriers were compared, and a significant difference between cellulose acetate and baryta paper was observed. Next, the locality, type of carrier, and audio–visual material seem to affect the structure of fungal communities. Additionally, a link between the occurrence of the most abundant classes and species on audio–visual materials and air contamination in the archives was proven. In both cases, the most abundant classes were Agariomycetes, Dothideomycetes, and Eurotiomycetes, and approximately half of the 50 most abundant species detected on the audio–visual materials and in the air were identical.

Résumé :
Audio-visual records and archives constitute a fundamental heritage that satisfies multiple needs, including education, training, research and entertainment. As such, there is a need to appropriately preserve and conserve them so they can be accessed for as long as they are needed. In spite of their significant role in safeguarding cultural heritage, audio-visual records and archives, are often neglected and accorded less attention than paper-based records, especially in developing countries. Hence, there is a risk of losing information held in audio-visual form. That is why this study looked at how the National Archives of Zambia (NAZ) and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) preserve audio-visual materials to ensure long-term accessibility of the information. The study investigated the types of audio-visual collections held, the storage equipment used, measures put in place to ensure long-term accessibility of audio-visual materials, the disaster preparedness plans in place to safeguard audio-visual archives and the major challenges encountered in the preservation of audio-visual materials. The findings of the study revealed that films (microfilm and microfiche), photographs and manuscripts, and video (video tapes) and sound recordings (compact cassette) constitute the biggest audio-visual collection preserved. The equipment used to store audio-visual materials included open shelves, specialised cabinets, electronic database for digitised materials, aisle mobiles and cupboards. The measures taken to ensure the long-term accessibility of audio-visual collection included digitisation and migration of endangered records and archives; fumigation of storage areas; conservation of damaged materials and regulation of temperatures and humidity in the storage areas. The disaster preparedness plans in place mostly covered structure insurance; protection against fire and water by way of installing fire extinguishers; smoke sensors; fire detectors and construction of purpose-built structures. The major challenges faced were financial constraints; technological obsolescence; lack of playback equipment; limited training; lack of strong back-up systems and inadequate storage facilities.

Audio-visual quality assessment remains as a complex research field. A great effort is being made to understand how visual and auditory domains are integrated and processed by humans. In this work, we analyzed and compared the results of three psychophisical experiments that collected quality and content scores given by a pool of subjects. The experiments include diverse content audio-visual material, e.g., Sports, TV Commercials, Interviews, Music, Documentaries and Cartoons, impaired with several visual (bitrate compression, packet-loss, and frame-freezing) and auditory (background noise, echo, clip, chop) distortions. Each experiment explores a particular domain. In Experiment 1, the video component was degraded with visual artifacts, meanwhile, the audio component did not suffer any type of degradation. In Experiment 2, the audio component was degraded while the video component remained untouched. Finally, in Experiment 3 both audio and video components were degraded. As expected, results confirmed a dominance of the visual component in the overall audio-visual quality. However, a detailed analysis showed that, for certain types of audio distortions, the audio component played a more important role in the construction of the overall perceived quality.

Résumé :
Abstract: An audio-visual room is a room specifically designed to enable users to have enjoyable listening and watching video activities. This study was conducted to find out correlation between acoustics quality and acoustics materials in audio-visual room of Musi Charitas University. The methods of this research were descriptive method using ecotect simulation. The simulation revealed that: (1) The replacement of ceiling materials improve the quality of sound quality since it’s reverberation time approximately 47.9 ms.; (2) The replacement of ceiling materials caused the reverberation time (RT) becomes eligible, with the tolerance of about 10% of the standard 50 ms. Thus, it was not necessary to change the wall layers on the right and the left sides because the RT of the audio-visual room matched the speech RT (0.5-1.0s). Before the ceiling materials were replaced, the RT in the 250 Hz frequency was 0.41s. That is why it is important to decide to use the right absorption coefficient so that the reverberation time in the audio-visual room would be equal or within the range of 0.5-1.0s.Keywords: room acoustics quality, acoustics materials, Ecotect analysisAbstrak: Ruang audio-visual merupakan ruang yang dirancang dengan kualitas akustik yang baik yaitu mampu memaksimalkan efek perangkat audio-video sehingga mendukung kenikmatan pemakai dalam mendengarkan dan menonton pertunjukan audio-visual. Résumé :
Audio-visual emotion recognition is the research of identifying human emotional states by combining the audio modality and the visual modality simultaneously, which plays an important role in intelligent human-machine interactions. With the help of deep learning, previous works have made great progress for audio-visual emotion recognition. However, these deep learning methods often require a large amount of data for training. In reality, data acquisition is difficult and expensive, especially for the multimodal data with different modalities. As a result, the training data may be in the low-data regime, which cannot be effectively used for deep learning. In addition, class imbalance may occur in the emotional data, which can further degrade the performance of audio-visual emotion recognition. To address these problems, we propose an efficient data augmentation framework by designing a multimodal conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) for audio-visual emotion recognition. Specifically, we design generators and discriminators for audio and visual modalities. The category information is used as their shared input to make sure our GAN can generate fake data of different categories. In addition, the high dependence between the audio modality and the visual modality in the generated multimodal data is modeled based on Hirschfeld-Gebelein-Rényi (HGR) maximal correlation. In this way, we relate different modalities in the generated data to approximate the real data. Then, the generated data are used to augment our data manifold. We further apply our approach to deal with the problem of class imbalance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to propose a data augmentation strategy with a multimodal conditional GAN for audio-visual emotion recognition. We conduct a series of experiments on three public multimodal datasets, including eNTERFACE’05, RAVDESS, and CMEW. The results indicate that our multimodal conditional GAN has high effectiveness for data augmentation of audio-visual emotion recognition.

Résumé :
This experiment investigated whether different presentation modes of instructional materials are differentially effective for older and younger adults learning to calibrate a glucometer. Glucometers are complex and require serial, sequential steps to calibrate them successfully. Some previous studies have failed to find a difference for older adults between instructions presented via audio and instructions presented with both audio and video (e.g. Stine, Wingfield & Myers, 1990); others have even found audio superior to video for presentation of instructions (Meline, 1976; Hale, 1998). In the current study, 12 older and 12 younger adults each received one type of training (audio or audio plus video) then were instructed to calibrate the glucometer using the information they received in the training. Overall, the presentation mode the groups received did affect their performance when later using the device, showing that for complex, sequential, spatial tasks, the addition of video to audio instructions improves performance for both younger and older adults.
