Rural Oaxacan migrants are defined as quintessential transnational movers, people who access rich social networks as they move between rural hometowns in southern Mexico and the urban centers of southern California. The social and cultural ties that characterize Oaxacan movers are critical to successful migrations, lead to jobs and create a sense of belonging and shared identity. Nevertheless, migration has socio-cultural, economic and psychological costs. To move the discussion away from a framework that emphasizes the positive transnational qualities of movement we focus on the costs of migr

Analysis of soil samples collected in the rhizosphere of Agave karwinskii in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico, revealed an undescribed species of Racocetra that possesses ornamented spores. The ornamentation on the outer layer of the external spore wall consisted of rounded and elongated processes, which are organized in such a way that they look like chromosomes. Therefore, the new species was named Racocetra cromosomica. It is the first species of Racocetraceae (Gigasporales) described from Oaxaca, one of the Mexican states having the greatest floristic diversity.

This paper describes 15 stone monuments documented until the 1995 field season at Río Viejo, the largest settlement in the alluvial plains of the Río Verde drainage in Coastal Oaxaca from 100 B.C. to A.D. 1100. The monuments, all seemingly dating to the Classic period (A.D. 600–900), include mainly carved stelae that most often depict elaborately dressed human figures accompanied by their calendrical names. The large size of these monuments and the political primacy of Río Viejo strongly suggest that the named individuals were local rulers. We posit that additional flattened sculptures and sla

Résumé :
The Clarke River map area (north half) comprises isolated areas of glacially and meltwater scoured bedrock, till veneers and blankets, locally fluted, and strongly fluted (mega-scale glacial lineations) streamlined till in the northeast. Ridged till may overlie fluted till blanket and streamlined till. Glaciofluvial esker complexes and associated meltwater outwash sediments trend westward (some may parallel pre-glacial valleys), southwestward, and northwestward. Glaciolacustrine sediments are a minor component. An early regional warm-based diverging southwestern and southern ice flow is well p

Résumé :
The oldest regional ice flow in the Nose Lake map area is southwestward. Subsequent northwestward flow is inferred from streamlined bedrock in central and eastern regions. The final and youngest flow was southwestward in these same regions, recorded by an abundance of streamlined landforms in till blanket and bedrock. The western edge of this late active ice lobe is defined by recessional moraines, part of the Twin Jugs moraine, also marking the eastern limit of a broad band of hummocky till from downwasting ice. During deglaciation, short-lived proglacial lakes, identified by raised beaches a

Résumé :
The Tinney Hills map area consists primarily of glacially and meltwater scoured bedrock, discontinuous till in the southwest and central-east, and postglacial marine sediments in coastal lowlands and along river valleys inland. The boundaries of many till deposits are cut to bedrock by widespread subglacial meltwater erosion. Ridged till in particular, is often associated with eskers and other glaciofluvial sediments and meltwater erosion. Striations and streamlined till landforms indicate regional ice flow towards the north-northwest and northwest, and later crosscutting relationships recordi

Résumé :
Mojave National Preserve (MOJA) in the Mojave Desert of southern California hosts an extensive geologic record, with units ranging in age from the Paleoproterozoic (2.5 to 1.7 billion years ago) to the Quaternary (present day). MOJA topography is dominated by numerous mountain ranges hosting extensive geological exposures divided by expansive valleys, dunes, and a low elevation dry salt lake. Some geological units are fossil-bearing, both within the preserve and in adjacent lands outside the boundaries of the preserve. The fossils preserved within MOJA span from the Proterozoic Eon (uncertain
