Changes in the epidemiology of child health have resulted in the reduction of acute infectious disease and an increase in the numbers of children who live with a chronic condition. Children with a chronic condition are more likely to be hospitalised due to complications, or exacerbation of their condition. Repeated hospital admission for children has been shown to be detrimental to their psychological and physical health. However the provision of care at home by community children's nursing service has been reported as less stressful and facilitates normality for the child and family. Within t

This thesis adopts a cultural psychological perspective on children's use of computers at home and, as a contrast, in the classroom. It utilises various methodologies to investigate the actual uses that children make of computers in these settings and also focuses on how computing practices are situated within the local ecology, or context. Seventy-six 7-, 9- and 11-year-old pupils from five socially and ethnically diverse primary schools were interviewed in their schools. In this thesis, I focus on the child's home life, and mother-child interactions nested within the home, and investigate how individual and dyadic characteristics of child and of mother may have a bearing on the quality of children's academic and non-academic learning experiences at home, and on their experience of school. Residential child care in Ireland is experiencing significant change. Change is an emotional experience for staff and leadership is named as pivotal in organisational change. However, there is gap in the literature because leadership and organisational change theory does not fully fit with the relational nature of residential child care.
