To study the influence of background color to 3 all-ceramic system core materials.The chromaticity value of all samples that were put on noble metal, Ni-Cr alloy, Hg-Ag alloy and resign background were measured with chromatism instrument, and chromatic aberration among groups were calculated. The chromatic aberration of Empress II samples on different background color could be distinguished by human eyes, but those of Alumina and Zirconium were unable to being distinguished. In conclusion, the influence of background color to Empress II and In-Ceram Alumina of AL1 were lager. When chosen as core material, noble metals should be covered to keep prosthesis from clinical color-transform. As background to In-Ceram Alumina of AL2, it was unnecessary for resin to be covered. In-Ceram Alumina of AL3, AL4 and In-Ceram Zirconium weren’t affected by background color.

A tunable chromatic dispersion system implementing a geometric phase lens and refractive lens pair has been developed. The tunable chromatic dispersion is generated by the diffraction of the geometric phase lens and controlled by varying the distance between the geometric phase lens and a refractive lens. Because the polarization characteristics of the geometric phase lens enables its dual modes as a convex or a concave lens, the system can provide a wide range of tunable chromatic dispersion compared to traditional approaches. The system performance is theoretically analyzed, modeled, simulated, and experimentally verified. Chromatic dispersion ranging from -3.8 mm to 4.4 mm was successfully demonstrated. Furthermore, various factors that influence the spectral resolution were investigated for the chromatic confocal sensor application.

The secondary-phase grating-based tomographic microscopy system, which is widely used in the biological and life sciences, can observe all the sample multilayer image information simultaneously because it has multifocal points. However, chromatic aberration exists in the grating diffraction, which seriously affects the observation of the image. To correct the chromatic aberration of the tomographic microscope system, this paper proposes a system that adopts blazed gratings and angle-variable reflectors as chromatic aberration correction devices according to the principle of dispersion compensation and Fourier phase-shift theory. A reflector-separated light dispersion-compensated 3D microscopy system is presented to achieve chromatic aberration correction while solving the problem of multilayer image overlap. The theoretical verification and optical design of the system were completed using ZEMAX software. The results show that the proposed system reduced the chromatic aberration of ordinary tomographic microscopy systems by more than 90%, retaining more wavelengths of light information. In addition, the system had a relatively wide range in the color difference compensation element installation position, reducing the difficulty of dispersion compensation element installation. Overall, the results indicate that the proposed system is effective in reducing chromatic aberration in grating diffraction.

This paper presents a new method for faults classification of HVDC system by analyzing the currents and voltages of the system under the Zero-Direct-Quadrature (DQ0) coordinates using Lab color chromatic based monitoring approach. Repeated for several healthy and faulty scenarios in DC side and AC side as well, The DQ0 transformed signals are evaluated for each case, Continuous chromatic monitoring is applied on all signals. A chromatic Lab mapping of short time-slot windows result in providing an early fault detection. The preliminary results show high accuracy in fault type classification as well with short processing time and without the need for any pretraining requirement.

The camera and projector are indispensable hardware parts of a color fringe projection 3D measurement system. Chromatic aberration between different color channels of the projector and camera has an impact on the measurement accuracy of the color fringe projection 3D profile measurement. There are many studies on camera calibration, but the chromatic aberration of the projector remains a question deserving of further investigation. In view of the complex system architecture and theoretical derivation of the traditional projector radial chromatic aberration method, a phase target based on projector radial chromatic aberration measurement and the correction method are proposed in this paper. This method uses a liquid crystal display with a holographic projection film as the phase target. The liquid crystal display sequentially displays red, green, and blue horizontal and vertical sinusoidal fringe images. The projector projects red, green, and blue horizontal and vertical sinusoidal fringe images to the phase target in turn, and calculates the absolute phases of the display fringes and reflection fringes, respectively. Taking the green channel as the reference channel, a phase coordinate system is established based on the phases of the vertical and horizontal directions displayed on the display screen, using the phase of the reflection fringes on the display screen as the ideal phase value of the phase point. Then, the phase coordinate system of the red and blue channels is transferred to the green phase coordinate system to calculate the chromatic aberration of the red-green channels and the blue-green channels, and pre-compensation is conducted. Experimental results prove that this method can measure and calibrate the radial chromatic aberration of the projector without being affected by the image quality of the camera. The correction effect of this method is that the maximum chromatic aberration of the red-green channel decreases from 1.9591/pixel to 0.5759/pixel, and the average chromatic aberration decreases from 0.2555/pixel to 0.1865/pixel. In addition, blue-green channel maximum chromatic aberration decreased from 1.8906/pixel to 0.5938/pixel, and the average chromatic aberration decreased from 0.2347/pixel to 0.1907/pixel. This method can improve the projection quality for fringe projection 3D profile measurement technology.

Sleep related vehicle accidents have been under publicised but remains as one of the main causes of road traffic accidents, as much as drink driving. This research aims to reduce this worldwide problem by developing a system to monitor fatigue driving. The thesis describes the research into the application of chromatic data processing techniques to detect early physiological and physical indicators of fatigue. Physiological factors that influence drivers are based on the duration of the drive, how much rest they have throughout the journey and the quality of sleep they had prior to the drive. The physiological indicator algorithm of the system is developed to take account of these factors and calculates the tiredness level. The chromatic technique is then used to analyse the results to establish trends and signatures of early fatigue situations where a warning system can be introduced. The chromatic signatures of fatigue have been established using results from 20 road tests conducted by professional drivers. Physical indicators such as early drowsy driving are detected by monitoring the behaviour of the vehicle. Micro sleep (e.g. head nodding, slow eye-blinking) can lead to lane drifting and vehicle swerving. These events are being regarded as early physical signs of sleepy driving. The main sensor for detecting the lateral yaw motion of the vehicle is a miniaturised gyroscope. Chromatic analysis is applied to the gyroscope output to identify and differentiate fatigue related events (e.g. swerves and lane drifting) from normal driving (e.g. left and right turning, roundabouts and bumpy roads) Combining the extracted information of the physiological and physical indicators, a Chromatic Fatigue Driving System can be developed as a tail safe system which monitors and alerts driver during critical fatigue conditions.

Neste trabalho é apresentado um estudo sobre a determinação matemática dos valores da dispersão cromática total, do zero de dispersão distribuído e efeitos não lineares em fibras ópticas de dispersão deslocada (DS). Uma metodologia para caracterização das dispersões cromáticas e para os zeros de dispersão local das fibras estudadas é elaborada com a utilização do modelo de fibra degrau equivalente e de aproximações entre as fibras ópticas dos enlaces trabalhados. A relação entre o diâmetro do campo modal e o zero de dispersão cromática distribuído segundo A. Rossaro [6] é discutida e comprovada através da realização de uma série de medidas práticas para a determinação dos efeitos não lineares das fibras de dispersão deslocada dos enlaces da Petrobrás. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar estes efeitos prejudiciais a transmissão de sinais ópticos de alta velocidade apresentados nos cabos submarinos da Petrobrás entre o Porto de Imbetiba e as plataformas de Pargo I e Pampo I na Bacia de Campos, analisando os resultados obtidos e caracterizando as possibilidades de upgrade destes enlaces.
This work presents a study on the mathematical determination of the total chromatic dispersion, zero dispersion wavelength and nonlinear optical effects in dispersion shifted (DS) fiber optic system. A methodology to determine the chromatic dispersion and zero dispersion wavelength is proposed using the equivalent step index model and the similarity of the total chromatic dispersion measured in fibers of the links under study. The relationship between the mode field diameter and the zero dispersion wavelength according to A. Rossaro [6] is discussed and proven with a series of practical measurements for the determination of the nonlinear effects of the dispersion shifted optical fibers of Petrobras links Imbetiba - Pargo and Imbetiba - Pampo of the Campos Basin.
En este trabajo se presenta un estudio sobre la determinación matemática de los valores de dispersión cromática total, del cero de dispersión distribuido y los efectos no lineales en fibras ópticas de dispersión desplazada (DS). Se elabora una metodología para la caracterización de las dispersiones cromáticas y para los ceros de dispersión local de las fibras estudiadas; utililizando el modelo de fibra escalón equivalente y de aproximaciones entre las fibras ópticas de los enlace. Se discute la relación entre el diámetro del campo modal y el cero de dispersión cromática distribuido según A. Rosaro [6] se comprueba a través de la realización de una serie de medidas prácticas para la determinación de los efectos no lineales de las fibras de dispersión desplazada de los enlaces de la Petrobrás. It is well established that the primate visual system possesses anatomically separate chromatic and luminance channels; these pathways are responsible for the visual coding of color and brightness information, respectively. In lower vertebrates, such as the zebrafish (Danio rerio), there does not appear to be any anatomical separation of cell types mediating color and luminance information. However, several studies suggest that these vertebrates may be able to discriminate these attributes of a visual stimulus. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the zebrafish visual system possesses chromatic and luminance channels. In addition, the contribution of each cone photoreceptor type to the chromatic and luminance channels was determined. An increment threshold procedure was used to elicit electroretinogram (ERG) b-wave responses to monochromatic light under two different intensities of white background adaptation. From the ERG b-wave responses, a spectral sensitivity function was derived under low and high levels of white background. By examining spectral sensitivity functions under these two levels of white background adaptation, it was possible to determine if two functional channels exist for color and luminance in the zebrafish visual system. The results of this study suggest that zebrafish possess a chromatic channel, but do not seem to have a luminance channel. The low level of white background adaptation yielded a spectral sensitivity function that was similar to the spectral sensitivity function of the chromatic channel in the primate. Alternatively, the high level of white background produced a spectral sensitivity function which appears to represent neither a chromatic nor a luminance channel; rather, the high level of white background only suppressed the cone contributions to the spectral sensitivity function. In addition, the ultraviolet cones were found to contribute substantially to spectral sensitivity functions derived under both the high and low white background adaptation levels. In conclusion, the results of the present study suggest that anatomical separation may be required for separation of function. Furthermore, the finding that zebrafish possess only a chromatic channel, as well as substantial ultraviolet sensitivity, may be a reflection of the type of environment in which they are normally found.

The watercolor illusion is a long-range assimilative spread of color emanating from a thin colored line running contiguous to a darker chromatic contour and imparting a figure-ground effect across a large area. The watercolored figure appears evenly colored by an opaque light veil of chromatic tint (coloration effect), with a clear surface color property spreading from the lighter edges. At the same time, the watercolored figure manifests a strong figure-ground organization and a solid figural appearance comparable to a rounded surface segregated in depth which extends out from the flat surface. The complementary region appears as a hole or empty space. The phenomenal properties of coloration and figure-ground effects and their relationship are described and demonstrated. The watercolor illusion and its main effects are discussed in the light of parallel mechanisms. Boundary and surface dynamics are processed by the boundary contour system and by the feature contour system.

This chapter briefly introduces nine classical geometric-optical illusions. These include the Delboeuf illusion, the Ebbinghaus illusion, the Judd illusion, the Müller-Lyer illusion, the Ponzo illusion, the vertical illusion, the Hering illusion, the Poggendorff illusion, and the Zoellner illusion. It then demonstrates that they persist under different luminance conditions and under isoluminance. The empirical findings show that our conscious percept is similarly affected by luminance conditions and isoluminance, suggesting that joint contour processing (chromatic and luminance) may extend well beyond early visual areas. The chapter further discusses these concepts in terms of the magnocellular system, the parvocellular system, and the koniocellular system.

Color and luminance interact in many ways in the human visual system. For instance, the colors in an afterimage, which are due to adaptation of retinal cones, are especially vivid when test contours, presented after the adapting image, coincide with the blurred edges of the afterimage. A single colored adapting pattern can give rise to two differently colored afterimages, according to the position of black lines in the test field. This shows that colors seen by the low-acuity chromatic pathways will diffuse outward along, but not across, luminance contours. This is also true for real colors. Finally, flicker-augmented contrast shows that the visual system, when given a choice, will select the most salient color/luminance borders in a stimulus.

The optical apparatus of the eye presents a low-pass spatial filter to the front end of the visual system which is a potential limiting factor for any visual task. In the well-focused eye, chromatic aberration and diffraction are thought to be the major optical factors limiting vision.1-3 Recent evidence indicates that ocular chromatic aberration can significantly reduce image contrast, resulting in loss of contrast sensitivity and visual acuity, and may also inject large artifacts into the retinal image of colored visual targets.4,5 Such problems are likely to be exacerbated by the use of achromatizing lenses6 or other optical apparatus such as clinical test instrumentation7 which may shift the eye's achromatic axis away from the fovea, thus exposing central vision to transverse aberration from which it is normally protected.8 Consequently, it is important to have available an accurate, mathematically tractable model of ocular chromatic aberration to help gauge the potential magnitude and significance of these optical effects for visual performance.

We applied redundancy reduction and image compression methods to image signals in space and color to derive a filtering operation that simultaneously reduces correlation in both these dimensions. The hybrid filtering operation is based on linear predictive coding (LPC) in space in conjunction with an eigenvector (Karhunen-Loeve) transformation in color. The resulting filter has a distinct major component associated with a luminance response, while further components are associated with chromatic responses. The luminance component has a high spatial frequency bandpass form with a large dynamic range and the chromatic components are spatially low pass and contain chromatic differences with a small dynamic range. The filter transforms the image into separate components that contain primarily spatial information and primarily color information. These filter components correlate with a high spatial frequency cutoff luminance mechanism and low spatial frequency cutoff chromatic mechanisms in the visual system. These spatiochromatic filtering mechanisms can be implemented by combining simple color opponent receptive fields. This suggests that the receptive field architecture is used as a means of redundancy reduction and image compression by generating transformations that separate an image into components that have (i) high spatial sensitivity and low chromatic content and (ii) high chromatic sensitivity and low spatial acuity.

Repair of DNA breaks is an essential function in plant cells as well as a crucial step in addition of modified DNA to plant cells. In addition, our inability to introduce modified DNA to its appropriate locus in the plant genome remains an important hurdle in genetically engineering crop species.We have taken a combined forward and reverse genetics approach to examining DNA double strand break repair in plants, focusing primarily on nonhomologous DNA end-joining. The forward approach utilizes a gamma-plantlet assay (miniature plants that are metabolically active but do not undergo cell division, due to cell cycle arrest) and has resulted in identification of five Arabidopsis mutants, including a new one defective in the homolog of the yeast RAD10 gene. The reverse genetics approach has identified knockouts of the Arabidopsis homologs for Ku80, DNA ligase 4 and Rad54 (one gene in what proves to be a gene family involved in DNA repair as well as chromatin remodeling and gene silencing)). All these mutants have phenotypic defects in DNA repair but are otherwise healthy and fertile. Additional PCR based screens are in progress to find knockouts of Ku70, Rad50, and Mre11, among others. Two DNA end-joining assays have been developed to further our screens and our ability to test candidate genes. One of these involves recovering linearized plasmids that have been added to and then rejoined in plant cells; plasmids are either recovered directly or transformed into E. coli and recovered. The products recovered from various mutant lines are then compared. The other assay involves using plant transposon excision to create DNA breaks in yeast cells and then uses the yeast cell as a system to examine those genes involved in the repair and to screen plant genes that might be involved as well. This award supported three graduate students, one in Israel and two in the U.S., as well as a technician in the U.S., and is ultimately expected to result directly in five publications and one Masters thesis.

The shoot apical meristem establishes plant architecture by continuously producing new lateral organs such as leaves, axillary meristems and flowers throughout the plant life cycle. This unique capacity is achieved by a group of self-renewing pluripotent stem cells that give rise to founder cells, which can differentiate into multiple cell and tissue types in response to environmental and developmental cues. Cell fate specification at the shoot apical meristem is programmed primarily by transcription factors acting in a complex gene regulatory network. In this project we proposed to provide significant understanding of meristem maintenance and cell fate specification by studying four transcription factors acting at the meristem. Our original aim was to identify the direct target genes of WUS, STM, KNAT6 and CNA transcription factor in a genome wide scale and the manner by which they regulate their targets. Our goal was to integrate this data into a regulatory model of cell fate specification in the SAM and to identify key genes within the model for further study. We have generated transgenic plants carrying the four TF with two different tags and preformed chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay to identify the TF direct target genes. Due to unforeseen obstacles we have been delayed in achieving this aim but hope to accomplish it soon. Using the GR inducible system, genetic approach and transcriptome analysis [mRNA-seq] we provided a new look at meristem activity and its regulation of morphogenesis and phyllotaxy and propose a coherent framework for the role of many factors acting in meristem development and maintenance. We provided evidence for 3 different mechanisms for the regulation of WUS expression, DNA methylation, a second receptor pathway - the ERECTA receptor and the CNA TF that negatively regulates WUS expression in its own domain, the Organizing Center. We found that once the WUS expression level surpasses a certain threshold it alters cell identity at the periphery of the inflorescence meristem from floral meristem to carpel fate [FM]. When WUS expression highly elevated in the FM, the meristem turn into indeterminate. We showed that WUS activate cytokinine, inhibit auxin response and represses the genes required for root identity fate and that gradual increase in WUCHEL activity leads to gradual meristem enlargement that affect phyllotaxis. We also propose a model in which the direction of WUS domain expansion laterally or upward affects meristem structure differently. We preformed mRNA-seq on meristems with different size and structure followed by k-means clustering and identified groups of genes that are expressed in specific domains at the meristem. We will integrate this data with the ChIP-seq of the 4 TF to add another layer to the genetic network regulating meristem activity.

Arabidopsis mutants that we have isolated, encode for fertilization-independent endosperm (fie), fertilization-independent seed2 (fis2) and medea (mea) genes, act in the female gametophyte and allow endosperm to develop without fertilization when mutated. We cloned the FIE and MEA genes and showed that they encode WD and SET domain polycomb (Pc G) proteins, respectively. Homologous proteins of FIE and MEA in other organisms are known to regulate gene transcription by modulating chromatin structure. Based on our results, we proposed a model whereby both FIE and MEA interact to suppress transcription of regulatory genes. These genes are transcribed only at proper developmental stages, as in the central cell of the female gametophyte after fertilization, thus activating endosperm development. To test our model, the following questions were addressed: What is the Composition and Function of the Polycomb Complex? Molecular, biochemical, genetic and genomic approaches were offered to identify members of the complex, analyze their interactions, and understand their function. What is the Temporal and Spatial Pattern of Polycomb Proteins Accumulation? The use of transgenic plants expressing tagged FIE and MEA polypeptides as well as specific antibodies were proposed to localize the endogenous polycomb complex. How is Polycomb Protein Activity Controlled? To understand the molecular mechanism controlling the accumulation of FIE protein, transgenic plants as well as molecular approaches were proposed to determine whether FIE is regulated at the translational or posttranslational levels. The objectives of our research program have been accomplished and the results obtained exceeded our expectation. Our results reveal that fie and mea mutations cause parent-of-origin effects on seed development by distinct mechanisms (Publication 1). Moreover our data show that FIE has additional functions besides controlling the development of the female gametophyte. Using transgenic lines in which FIE was not expressed or the protein level was reduced during different developmental stages enabled us for the first time to explore FIE function during sporophyte development (Publication 2 and 3). Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that FIE, a single copy gene in the Arabidopsis genome, represses multiple developmental pathways (i.e., endosperm, embryogenesis, shot formation and flowering). Furthermore, we identified FIE target genes, including key transcription factors known to promote flowering (AG and LFY) as well as shoot and leaf formation (KNAT1) (Publication 2 and 3), thus demonstrating that in plants, as in mammals and insects, PcG proteins control expression of homeobox genes. Using the Yeast two hybrid system and pull-down assays we demonstrated that FIE protein interact with MEA via the N-terminal region (Publication 1). Moreover, CURLY LEAF protein, an additional member of the SET domain family interacts with FIE as well. The overlapping expression patterns of FIE, with ether MEA or CLF and their common mutant phenotypes, demonstrate the versatility of FIE function. FIE association with different SET domain polycomb proteins, results in differential regulation of gene expression throughout the plant life cycle (Publication 3). In vitro interaction assays we have recently performed demonstrated that FIE interacts with the cell cycle regulatory component Retinobalsoma protein (pRb) (Publication 4). These results illuminate the potential mechanism by which FIE may restrain embryo sac central cell division, at least partly, through interaction with, and suppression of pRb-regulated genes. The results of this program generated new information about the initiation of reproductive development and expanded our understanding of how PcG proteins regulate developmental programs along the plant life cycle. The tools and information obtained in this program will lead to novel strategies which will allow to mange crop plants and to increase crop production.

In underwater photography, the object is immersed in water while the image is usually formed in air. The most obvious, straightforward way to form an image under these circumstances with a conventional type of lens is to use a plane parallel slab of glass as a window in front of the lens to separate the water from the air space. For most types of camera lenses, this is a perfectly adequate solution; But if one looks at the problem carefully, it is evident that such a system introduces a chromatic aberration referred to as lateral color. The source of this aberration is illustrated in Fig. 1. The dispersion at the glass to air interface overcompensates for the dispersion at the water to glass interface. As a result, the direction of a ray entering the camera lens for any given ray incident on the window varies with the wavelength of light.

A colour appearance model provides a viewing-condition-specific method for the transformation of the tristimulus values, X, Y, Z, to or from perceptual attribute correlates. This publication describes a specific colour appearance model, CIECAM16, which may be useful for colour management systems, used in the imaging industries, that involve related colours. The main applications of the model are the evaluation of photographic prints and self-luminous displays, where the colours will be perceived as related colours. This model is based on the CAM16 colour appearance model. It consists of a chromatic adaptation transform and equations to calculate a set of perceptual attribute correlates using the CIE 1931 standard colorimetric observer. This report provides revisions to the CIE colour appearance model for colour management systems that involve related colours, CIECAM02. The CIECAM16 model is simpler than the original CIECAM02 model, but it maintains the same prediction performance for visual data as the original model. The evolution and application of this colour appearance model, CIECAM16, are presented, as is additional information about the use of the model in practical applications. The publication is written in English, with a short summary in French and German. It consists of 38 pages with 6 figures and is readily available from the CIE Webshop or from the National Committees of the CIE.
