Based on the multi-index data of 11 cities in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay in 2016, the urban economic quality was calculated by TOPSIS method. Applying the modified gravitational model, the economy spatial linkage characteristics of core city-to-periphery city and periphery city-to-periphery city were analyzed. In addition, based on the method of network density analysis, centrality measures, core-periphery structure analysis to make a further verification about facts carried out from spatial connection analysis. This study shows that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay has an obvious core-periphery structure, and the overall economic network connection of Greater Bay is not strong. Guangdong-Shenzhen-Hong Kong is the core urban agglomeration in the Greater Bay Area. Dongguan and Foshan are transforming from marginal cities to semi-marginal cities. The marginal cities are limited by geographical distance or the economic environment, which leads to their development far behind the overall development of the Greater Bay Area. Finally, combined with the new wooden barrel theory and location advantage analysis method, advices were carried out to build a higher-level of the Greater Bay Area in future by dividing the Greater Bay Area into three major urban agglomerations. Urban agglomerations were proposed to meet the resources and industrial demands of the core urban imperfections and drive the economic development of the marginal cities at the same time.

Résumé :
The Indonesian government plans to move the capital city from Jakarta to Penajam Paser Utara (PPU) which is the upstream area of Balikpapan Bay, East Kalimantan. There are several activities in the planned new capital city that potentially affect the condition of land and marine ecosystems, including clearing new land for housing and agriculture as well as expanding mining and petroleum areas. Directly or indirectly, these activities could affect the oceanographic conditions of Balikpapan Bay. For this reason, in order to obtain an up-to-date picture of Balikpapan Bay, an oceanographic survey was conducted in early March 2020. In addition, to support the analysis of marine dynamics in these waters and their predictions in the future, numerical simulations of hydrodynamic modeling were also carried out. Oceanographic observations indicate significant water stratification in the area about 20 km from the mouth of the bay. This result is also well illustrated in the hydrodynamic model numerical simulation, where there is a water loop at the confluence between salt and fresh water masses from two rivers 18-20 km from the mouth of Balikpapan Bay. Murchison Bay in Lake Victoria is the main water source for Kampala City (Uganda) but is also the recipient for the wastewater discharged from the city. The objective of this paper is to trace the main landuse-based pollution sources within Kampala City borders and around Murchison Bay as a means to develop methods and systems to protect and preserve the aquatic environment and, from the lessons learned, to highlight what is considered to be an appropriate and sustainable approach for Uganda. This paper shows that Uganda needs to set realistic local standards, offer affordable services, set time frameworks, streamline politics, nurture and develop institutions, divide institutional responsibilities, educate her people and learn from the success stories to reverse the negative impacts on the water quality in Murchison Bay.

Résumé :
Urban politics and ethnicity have been intimately linked in the history of the twin cities, Port Arthur and Fort William, later amalgamated into Thunder Bay in 1970. The historic relationship between political and urban development and ethnicity may be seen in three distinct phases: (1) the era of ethnic exclusion and factionalism in the period 1900-30, when ethnic groups settled into "foreign" enclaves, or "quarters," and largely stood apart from mainstream political parties, particularly those groups like the Ukrainians and Finns who were active on the radical left; (2) the two decades of radical protest and emergent ethnopolitcal activism from 1930-50, which saw the flowering of city "boss" rule in Port Arthur under Mayor C. W. Cox (1934-49), and federal Liberal dominance by C. D. Howe and Rev. Dan McIvor; (3) the postwar era (1950-70) of ethnic assimilation and broad ethnic participation at all levels of civic politics, and among all parties at the provincial and federal levels.

Résumé :
Larval fish assemblage in Guajará Bay was studied through four quarterly field campaigns and discussed in relation to individuals' development stages and exposure to contaminants poured out by the Pará State Capital City, Belém. Larval densities were low and diversity extremely poor with a strong dominance of clupeids, engraulids and, to a lower extent, sciaenids. The main spawning season was registered at the onset of the rainy period. Pre-flexion and flexion clupeiforms remained in the farmost stations from the city while post-flexion larvae were found near urban activity centres. Unlikely, pre-flexion and flexion sciaenids were scattered along the city waterfront. Post-flexion larvae were rare; it is suggested that sciaenids use the bay as a transitory route between their spawning grounds and more distant nursery grounds. The waters around the city of Belém showed signs of contamination. However, based on the literature, Guajará Bay environmental quality at the time of the study was suitable for fish larvae life. Nitrate with pH best explained larval distribution.

Résumé :
Comparison of the 2019 census results with those obtained earlier permits to evaluate changes in the number and distribution of nesting seabird colonies оn the Staritsky Peninsula over the past 10 years. The Staritsky Peninsula coasts and the Gertner and Veselaya bay islands are located in close proximity to the city of Magadan, and therefore are subject to maximum anthropogenic pressure. The total number of breeding seabirds (including the urban population of the Slaty-backed Gull in the city of Magadan) increased from 36 thousand individuals in 2009 to 57.6 thousand individuals in 2019. Simultaneously, the proportion of main species changed in the largest colonies around the city - on the Tri Brata Islands and Cape Ostrovnoy. A very large colony (3,230 birds) of the Pelagic Cormorants near the mouth of the Dukcha River, which appeared in the last 20 years, now became the largest in the Tauy Bay. The colony formation and growth was promoted by the urban wastewaters discharged into the Gertner Bay.

Résumé :
In this paper, we consider the implications of applying the city region concept to a medium-sized city and whether such an application of a spatial and governmental policy is appropriate when the central city in question is also not necessarily economically dominant or connected to its wider city-region. This gives a deeper understanding to the process of subnational restructuring of the UK state via the production of city regions which has now been in progress since the 2010 Coalition Government. The primary focus governmentally and in academic literature has been on larger (English) city regions, but here we highlight how this has been applied in distinctive ways in devolved nations of the UK. To this end, we focus upon the case of the Swansea Bay City Region, based in South West Wales, looking through the lens of Welsh devolution and through the concept of the city-region as a scalar narrative for the delivery of economic development.

Résumé :
The Sanxingdui Moon Bay City Wall, in China, is built of pale-yellow sand and yellow-brown clay, and the yellow-brown layers are suffering severely. In order to discuss the desiccation cracks in a section of this wall, this paper conducts evaporation tests in laboratory and observes the variations in the characteristics of the boundary conditions of the bottom surface of the sample. The results show that the boundary conditions of the bottom surface of the sample consist of two free boundaries, two sliding boundaries, and one fixed boundary from the outside to the inside. During the drying process, the free boundary extends, but the fixed boundary shrinks; the sliding boundary also remains basically stable. We obtain the surface tensile stress distribution under different boundary conditions through stress analysis and deduce that the tensile stress distribution has a trapezoidal pattern. Moreover, we calculate the lower limit on the crack spacing of the sample using the energy method, and the double of the sum of the maximum sliding boundary length and the free boundary length is the upper limit to the crack spacing. Maintaining the stability of the soil moisture content of the site is the main factor in the protection of the earthen archaeological site under the humid conditions of the museum above the site. In order to reduce the water evaporation rate of the soil, the surface of the site should be coated by a protectant, the main determining features of which are permeability, tensile strength, and compatibility with the earthen site.

Résumé :
Abstract This study aims to analyze the factors behind the establishment of sister city cooperation between the Denpasar City Government and the Mossel Bay Government since the end of 2019. The author conducted qualitative research to achieve this aim. Thus, this research is expected to enrich other research tools in matters relating to sister city cooperation or paradiplomacy in Indonesia, especially Denpasar. The main data analyzed in this study were obtained through semi-structured interviews with the Head of the Sub-Section for Foreign Cooperation of the Denpasar City in 2020 at the Secretariat of Denpasar. In addition, other types of data that support this research were obtained from the official local government website, several books, journals, reports, and online news sites which reliable and suitable for the content of the research. The focus of this research is to comply with the concept of paradiplomacy and south-south cooperation in identifying the motives behind this sister city cooperation, especially from the side of the Denpasar City Government. As a result, five motives were found that could encourage the Denpasar City Government to accept the sister city cooperation offered by the Mossel Bay Government in 2019, including the international market, tourism and culture, establishing the identity of international partners, the status of government administration, and most importantly, the bilateral relationship between the Indonesian government and the South African government, which in this regards, is an example of the implementation of the South-South Cooperation (SSC) concept.

The paper presents a numerical modeling study aimed at a preliminary assessment of the impact of the planned sea outfall of the city of Limassol, Cyprus, on the waters of Akrotiri bay. First the local meteorological and oceanographic conditions as well as the loading characteristics are briefly reviewed. Two-dimensional finite element hydrodynamic and dispersion models are subsequently applied to the study area. The results of the former show an eastbound flow pattern under the prevailing westerly winds, in general agreement with available field observations. The spread of BOD and N under continuous loading is then examined for eastward as well as for westward flow as an indicator for the extent of pollution to be expected. The computed concentrations are generally low and confined to the shallower parts of the bay.

Résumé :
The originally poorly described alpheid shrimp Betaeus levifrons Vinogradov, 1950 is redescribed based on several adult specimens collected in the Vostok Bay (part of Peter the Great Bay) situated near Nakhodka City, about 90 km southwest from the type locality of the species, the Zolotoi Rog Bay, the Sea of Japan. The specimens were collected with the yabby pump from burrows on sandy-gravel bottom and appears to be associated with the burrowing mud-shrimps Upogebia major (De Haan, 1841) and U. issaeffi (Balss, 1914) (Upogebiidae).

Résumé :
ABSTRACT: This study first aimed to evaluate the effect of human activities on the distribution of lead within the estuarine system of Belém, Pará. This was achieved by studying the concentration and isotopic signature of Pb in bottom sediments from the western margin of Guajará Bay and from Carnapijó River, an area removed from the influence of the city of Belém. Secondly, the contribution of suspended matter in the transportation of anthropogenic Pb in Guajará Bay was evaluated. Third, the content and background isotopic signature of Pb in the hydrographic system of Belém was determined. Isotopic signatures of sediments from the western margin of Guajará Bay confirm an anthropogenic contribution of Pb throughout the entire bay. The Pb accumulation process has become more efficient over the last 10 years, and this can be attributed to the rapid population growth of Belém city. Sediments in Carnapijó River are not affected by human activities, and the average concentration values (Pb = 19.6 ± 3.7 mg kg-1) and isotopic signatures (206Pb/207Pb = 1.196 ± 0.004) confirm the background Pb values previously proposed for the river system in the Belém region. The isotopic signatures of suspended matter on the eastern (206Pb/207Pb = 1.188) and western (206Pb/207Pb = 1.174) margins of Guajará Bay show that suspended matter is an efficient Pb transportation mechanism of domestic and industrial wastewater from Belém to the western margin of the Bay due to tidal effects at the confluence with Guamá River.

Résumé :
The study is devoted to examining the essence of the phenomenon of social and cultural urbanism – an extensive interdisciplinary field of research devoted to cities and the processes of urban lifestyle formation, urban leisure, overcoming depersonalization, asociality and isolation of citizens, their mutual alienation and antipathy. The modern city is considered as a specific, ration-ally organized territory; a special self-developing whole organism, where a uniquely organized so-cial and patial environment arises, the form of existence of a particular society. The problems of social and cultural urbanism are connected with mass urban culture and leisure, within the frame-work of which projects of recreation zones are being developed that positively affect the develop-ment of urban spaces and communities, making them attractive to residents and tourists. In any urban environment, a special way and type of culture develops; in the structure of the settlement functional clusters are formed that integrate the life, work and leisure of citizens. The quality of human life largely depends on the state of the social and cultural environment created in the city (quality of housing, public services, communications, trade, health care, education, etc.). The ur-ban social and cultural environment is positioned as a complex self-organizing subsystem of the urban structure, characterized by a number of quantitative and qualitative indicators. The urban environment through the methods of people interaction forms a unique social and psychological type of personality, which is characterized by rationality, mobility, willingness to change, the sub-ordination of one’s own interests to the needs of others, the ability to overcome the difficulties of reality. Common problems of the urban social and cultural environment are insufficient cultural and leisure infrastructure; low living standards and purchasing power of the population; lack of sustainable cultural and historical traditions; lack of active partnership between organizations of the spheres of culture, leisure and art in solving city problems.

Résumé :
This paper examines data from 18 USGS gauges in the lower Pee Dee Basin in an effort to explain the behavior of the flooding following Hurricane Florence (2018) in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Despite record or near-record flooding in all the tributaries to the Winyah Bay estuary, water levels near the city of Georgetown were well below predicted heights. Floodplain storage in the lower Great Pee Dee, Lynches, and Little Pee Dee River valleys stored over 1.2 million acre-feet of floodwaters, delaying peak stage near Bucksport for five days and reducing peak flow into the Winyah Bay tidal river/estuary system by nearly 50%. An unknown amount of flow from the Winyah Bay tidal river/estuary system flowed through the Atlantic Intracoastal Water Way to Little River rather than through Winyah Bay. The resulting freshwater flow to Winyah Bay only moved the point of tidal stagnation (where upstream tidal flow balances downstream freshwater flow) to near Georgetown. Since the city of Georgetown was near the point of stagnation, water level there was driven by ocean tidal height rather than river flood stage. The lack of discharge data from the tidal rivers in Georgetown County prevents evaluation of the importance of each of these factors and will limit efforts to make quantitative predictions of future flooding in the county.

Résumé :
During the second Wellman polar expedition, to Franz Josef Land in 1898, Wellman’s second-in-command, Evelyn Briggs Baldwin, gave the waters south of Cape Heller on the northwest of Wilczek Land the name ‘Operti Bay.’ Proof of this is found in Baldwin’s journal around the time of 16 September 1898. Current research indicates that Operti Bay was named after an Italian artist, Albert Operti. Operti’s membership in a New York City masonic fraternity named Kane Lodge, as well as correspondence between Baldwin and Rudolf Kersting, confirm that Baldwin and Operti engaged in a friendly relationship that resulted in the naming of the bay.
