The transition to a clean energy economy continues. Motivated by mounting scientific evidence, shifting market forces, and in some cases policy, U.S. industries are installing more zero-carbon energy sources, developing more energy-efficient products, and adopting more environmentally sensitive standards. More recently, debates have broken out in Congress over the need for an ambitious Green New Deal centered on clean economy employment. The result: Shifts in “green jobs,” carbon emissions, electricity consumption, and resilience to climate shocks have become some of the highest profile, most

A clean energy transition will create jobs, promote energy independence, improve public health, and, ultimately, mitigate climate change. But getting to this new future will require more than just phasing out fossil fuels. The production of a wide range of energy-relevant materials—lithium, cobalt, and nickel for batteries; rare earth elements for wind turbines and electric motors; silicon for solar panels; and copper to expand the electric grid—must be scaled up substantially. Résumé :
This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the costs of job displacement in energy-intensive industries in selected OECD countries. Based on harmonised linked employer-employee data from 14 OECD countries, we estimate the effect of job displacement in three energy-intensive industries, namely energy supply, heavy manufacturing and transport, compared to other industries. We find that workers displaced from energy supply and heavy manufacturing, experience larger earnings losses compared with workers in non-energy-intensive and transport sectors. Larger earnings losses mainly result from w

Résumé :
“Environmental justice is not just about the environment-it about people. It’s about dignity. It’s about equity.” The damage we do to the planet does not land evenly. Dark smoke hangs over busy, low-income neighbourhoods, while coastlines that poor island families call home slowly slip below wave after wave. Too often, those who did the least to cause the problem feel the blow first and hardest. That imbalance sits at the heart of environmental justice. It says that caring for nature and caring for people must walk hand in hand. When a new mine opens, a highway stretches through a community, o

Résumé :
The findings of this study can inform and enable policymakers in improving occupational air pollution, including addressing air pollution, pollution sources and other related issues in the garment manufacturing sector in Cambodia. Such interventions will help to uphold the health of workers as a human right, ensure safe workplaces, and also be beneficial for the country’s economic growth, as a healthy workforce is more productive. While the garment sector serves as Cambodia’s economic backbone and creates much-needed jobs, it is also a highly polluting industry, alongside being regularly impli

Résumé :
Agrivoltaics and ecovoltaics are multibenefit land repurposing strategies that offer economic and ecological benefits. They can reduce groundwater pumping near disadvantaged communities, contribute to an equitable clean energy transition, and create job opportunities. This fact sheet details benefits, key ideas for implementation—including a focus on costs, funding sources, and permitting—, and recommendations. Farmers, land managers, and others can use it to discuss land repurposing options with communities, conservation practitioners, project proponents, and block grantees participating in t

Résumé :
This study investigates how access to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) affects time allocation, employment, and earnings in Kenya, using data from the country’s first nationally representative time use survey, Kenya Time Use Survey 2021 (KTUS) (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics 2023a), merged with the Kenya Continuous Household Survey Programme 2023 (KCHS) (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics 2023b). The study examines whether LPG adoption reduces unpaid domestic labor and whether the resulting time savings are reallocated to paid work, particularly among women. The results show that men genera
