ABSTRACT The States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force, whose members are the oil spill prevention and response agencies in the U.S. West Coast states of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia initiated a study of West Coast pilotage in 1995. Following a review of national pilotage studies done in both the United States and Canada, a workgroup of representatives from West Coast pilot organizations assisted the Oil Spill Task Force in drafting a survey that was sent to 28 pilotage organizations, governing boards, and authorities on th

The Belgian coastline is 65 kilometres, has 15 coastal towns and, like many of its North-Sea neighbours, experiences the volatile dynamics of sea level rise and raised demand for effective coastal safety measures. Today, we are seeing the consequences of hard and grey infrastructural solutions which solely address the concerns of coastal safety in a majority technical way. Along the Belgian coast, exists an array of sea walls, dikes, and beaches along a traditional sweeping concrete surface delineating the edge between land and sea. This article details a novel method for the determination of safe flight paths dynamically following an in-flight distress event. The method is based on probabilistic safety metrics which also include the touchdown and evacuation/rescue phases after landing. Two case studies simulating in-flight distress events, one from the west and the other from the east coast are presented using these formulations for a quantitative analysis. It is found that the nearest landing sites are not always the safest ones showing the benefits of the newly developed safety metrics. Finally, the path safety levels

This publication offers an overview of the latest cross-disciplinary developments in the field of Building with Nature (BwN) for the protection of coastal regions. The key philosophy of BwN is the employment of natural processes to serve societal goals, such as flood safety. The starting point is a systems-based approach, making interventions that employ the shaping forces of the natural system to perform measures by self-regulation. Initial pilots of this innovative approach originate from coastal engineering, with the Sand Motor along the coast of South Holland as one of the prime examples.

In the early sixteenth century, Portuguese navigators on voyages outside the tropics ran into an unexpected problem in navigating with the plane chart since the latter took no account of the convergence of the meridians. Voyages between Brazil and the Cape of Good Hope were accomplished much faster than the chart led them to forsee. To overcome this problem, were Portuguese pilots of the first half of the sixteenth century using globes to set their courses with on great circle courses? The general opinion is that they were not. PRSB continued to test out the formulation in the actual offshore field environment where the BioMETT technology was piloted in

After supplying a first-generation Active Inceptor System (AIS) for the Boeing Vehicle Management Systems Integration Technology for Affordable Lifecycle cost (VITAL) AH-64 Apache helicopter, BAE Systems has produced a range of flightworthy AIS products for several military and commercial aircraft. The latest fifth-generation AIS is in development for the civil marketplace. Most recently, BAE Systems worked collaboratively with Boeing Helicopters to define a new type of tactile cueing solution, the Active Parallel Actuation Subsystem (APAS) that provides the benefits of tactile cueing to vehic

Abstract The Oil and Gas industry is still in the early stages of adopting autonomous robots. To build trust among operational teams regarding this groundbreaking approach, TotalEnergies initiated an extensive testing program in 2020, which has seen seven pilots to date. In 2023, an ambitious pilot started off the coast of Angola, showcasing a more integrated approach. This paper offers insights from the Pazflor FPSO pilot, during which two robots were operational for a six-month period. The pilot project lasted almost two years, encompassing various phases from preparation and preliminary tes

With the move towards fly-by-wire flight control systems for rotorcraft, pilot inceptors are no longer physically connected to the mechanical hardware of the aircraft. This has allowed the move to smaller, lighter, side-mounted controllers, which typically lack a mechanical connection between the pilots' inceptors. Such controllers can be electronically linked using active inceptors, however this adds cost and weight over passive inceptors. The objective of the work presented in this paper is to assess the impact of linked versus unlinked cyclics on Army helicopter aircrew coordination. To do

Résumé :
The purpose of the National Park Service?s Mediterranean Coast Network Invasive Plant Monitoring Program is to determine the status and trends in the distribution and cover of a targeted list of nonnative plant species in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SAMO), and to provide information to assist park managers with control of invasive plants. The monitoring is conducted at all point of entry survey sites (trailheads, parking lots, ports and campgrounds) and at randomly selected locations along dirt roads and trails on public lands throughout SAMO. This report presents an overview of a novel community-based intervention for older people living in deprived neighbourhoods in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte: Programa Maior Cuidado (PMC). Since 2011 PMC has been jointly run by the municipal Departments of Health and Social Assistance to support dependent older people living in vulnerable families. These families receive up to 20 hours of support a week from professional family care support workers. Health centres and social assistance posts hold joint monthly case reviews and work closely with family care support workers to anticipate a
