Résumé :
This chapter investigates the identity and persistence conditions for processes as a task of biological process ontology. It argues that the problem of intrinsic variation in evolution, development, and metabolism motivates viewing biological individuals as processes rather than as substances. Different criteria of identity for processes are then evaluated, including causal and spatio-temporal relations. The chapter ultimately settles on the view that processes are individuated by causal cohesion and are identical if they share the same cohesive properties and spatio-temporal region. The persistence of processes is interpreted on the model of perdurance, as a form of causal continuity or genidentity.

Résumé :
Continuities in written doctrinal language contrast with semantic shifts within the indigenous speech community, revealed through petitions, testaments, trial testimony, and other records, as well as modern oral evidence. As the Mesoamerican cultural matrix has itself been modified by Christian practice and visual symbols, new associations have become attached to traditional linguistic resources. At the same time the Indians have reformulated and reinterpreted the Christian message along lines consonant with traditional cosmology and moral theology. Thus cultural gaps, and along with them linguistic gaps, have narrowed through the process of religious syncretism. Mutually reinforcing influences have converged in the creation of the particular variety of religious devotion defined as Mexican Christianity.

Résumé :
This chapter is a continuing discussion on the topic of the ontology of universals, but with special focus on process and change in reality. The traditional problem of change is posed in terms of how the constant flux of the physical world can be grasped in clear, static, and intelligible ways. The theory of universals that was sketched in Chapter 3 is taken up and elaborated. It is argued that the problem of change and an explanation for how the flux can be grasped using universal concepts can be had by a trope-theoretic account of universals. The legitimacy of the intellect and of universal concepts can thereby be upheld without positing a Platonic realm of objects.

Step 7 is the final step in the Make Arts process. It includes suggestions for promoting continual creativity within communities and for celebrating both new and older arts forms. It describes results-based management (RBM) and demonstrates how to create arts-related results chains. The focus, however, is not so much in providing a new set of activities, but in urging readers to continue applying all seven of the Make Arts steps. Embedding the Make Arts cycle in community life will result in the best chance for better lives to continue to emerge and endure. This section also includes a case study and discussion highlighting the potentially devastating effects of cultural and musical change within communities. Step 7 concludes with final thoughts from the authors about the Guide and the impact they hope it will have on arts advocates and arts work.

Résumé :
This chapter discusses what account should be given of the ontology of perceptual accomplishments that take time (such as listening to a musical performance). The following questions are addressed. Do these perceptual accomplishments involve a succession of distinct, discrete experiences? If not, then what account should be given of the respect in which different temporal parts of the events one perceives are experienced as successively present? Are the boundaries of the experienced present the temporal boundaries of a perceptual experience, or should they be conceived of in some other way? The chapter outlines a conception of process that can help address these questions by illuminating the place and role of notions of continuity, succession, and boundary in an account of our experience over extended intervals of time. It is suggested that this account is relevant to explaining the sense one might have that the present is both fleeting and incessant.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The chapter highlights results from the Buffalo Longitudinal Study, which began in infancy and was guided by a developmental cascade model. The chapter discusses the importance of the co-occurrence of parent alcohol problems with depression and antisocial behavior beginning in early childhood, and how these parental risks in infancy may predict the quality of parent–child interactions and infant–parent attachment. These processes in early childhood may set the stage for one of the most salient developmental issues at preschool age—the development of self-regulation. Together, the parent–child relationship and child self-regulation may predict one of the most clearly established pathways to adolescence substance use disorders—continuity of externalizing problems from childhood to adolescence. Finally, this chapter presents results from a developmental cascade model from infancy to adolescence, with implications for development of preventive interventions for adolescent substance use disorders.

Résumé :
Paul Griffiths and Russell D. Gray have argued that the fundamental unit of analysis in developmental systems theory should be a process—the life cycle—and not a set of developmental resources and interactions between those resources. The key concepts of developmental systems theory, epigenesis and developmental dynamics, also suggest a process view of the units of development. This chapter explores in greater depth the features of developmental systems theory that favour treating processes as fundamental in biology and examines the continuity between developmental systems theory and ideas about process in the work of several major figures in early twentieth-century biology, most notably C. H. Waddington.

Résumé :
David Sellar (1941-2019) was a pioneering historian of Scots law who convincingly and conclusively rejected previous interpretations of the subject as a series of false starts and rejected experiments. He emphasised instead the continuity of legal development in Scotland, with change a process of integration of external influences with indigenous customs from very early times on. Thus down to the present Scots law embraces Celtic and other customary elements reaching far back into its past, while also having been open to innovation from the developing Canon, Civil, Feudal and English Common law since the middle ages. This too has left deep marks upon the law’s character as a “mixed legal system”. Sellar’s approach, articulated mainly through essays published in diverse places over four decades, had significant influence upon general understanding of legal history in Scotland as well as leading to appreciation elsewhere of its comparative significance. The major essays gathered together in this single collection demonstrate the scope and reach of Sellar’s overall contribution. Its distinguishing mark is the perspective that Sellar himself brought to bear, which was one no other previous writer in the field could achieve, especially in relation to Celtic and Canon law.
