In order to predict and control the temperature of continuous casting slab, a mathematical heat transfer model simulating the solidification process of continuous casting slab has been developed based on the realistic roller-layout and spray nozzle distribution. And the accuracy has been verified by comparing with the pin-shooting experiment results. An advanced control strategies are adopted to achieve the optimization of water quantity under different production conditions by the integration of energy saving water distribution module and slab temperature optimization module in the dynamic secondary cooling model. The total water consumption has a trend of dropping off after the utilization of the optimization technique. And the slab surface temperature increases which fits for the down stream direct hot rolling.

High casting speed coincides with the development trend of billet continuous casting, which significantly changes the casting characteristics. A mathematical model of the billet mold, which includes multiphase fluid flow, transient heat transfer, and solidification during ultra-high speed of the casting process was developed. The model is first applied to investigate the flow field of molten steel in the mold, studying the influence of steel flow upon the melting and flowing behavior of mold flux. The temperature and velocity distributions of the flux pool that formed above the molten steel surface are described. A parametric study on the melting temperature and viscosity of mold flux on liquid flux thickness and flow velocity is then carried out. Finally, the model is used to derive the relationship between interfacial tension and level fluctuations. The predictions provide an improved understanding of the melting and flowing behavior of mold flux in the billet mold and give the guidance for the design and optimization of mold flux for ultra-high speed of billet casting.

To clarify the characteristics of slag infiltration and heat transfer behaviors in the meniscus region during the casting of high Mn–high Al steel, a mathematical model of a continuous casting mold that couples fluid flow with heat transfer, and solidification is developed. The model is based on the change in slag composition and properties caused by the steel/slag reaction. The formation and evolution of the meniscus profile and slag films for different mold fluxes during mold oscillation are described. The results show that the rapid growth of the slag rim with a high Al2O3 content approaches and deforms the meniscus so that a series of casting problems such as slag infiltration blocking, large fluctuations in heat flux, and even meniscus breaking occur in the continuous casting process. Predictions are in good agreement with plant measurements. These findings provide an improved understanding of the complex phenomena occurring in the meniscus region and give new insights into the evaluation and optimization of mold flux properties for high Mn–high Al steel casting.

Steelmaking continuous casting (SCC)—hot rolling (HR) is a key process in the production of steel products. It is also a process with large energy consumption. Energy saving has always been an important goal of production scheduling of this process. In this paper, aiming at integrated scheduling optimization for SCC-HR processes, energy saving objective is converted to minimize waiting time of slabs in slab yard, so as to reduce slab temperature loss and achieve the goal of saving energy. An integrated two-stage mathematical programming model is established for the above problems, and a hybrid algorithm of genetic algorithm and linear programming is designed for the integrated model. The correctness of the model and the validity of the algorithm are verified by computational experiments using simulated instances.

In continuous casting, the nozzle position may deviate from the center under actual operating conditions, which may cause periodic fluctuation of the steel-slag interface and easily lead to slag entrapment and gas absorption. Swirling nozzles can reduce these negative effects. A mathematical simulation method based on a round mold of steel components with a 600 mm diameter is applied to study the flow field of molten steel in a mold. The swirling nozzle is optimized through the establishment of a fluid dynamics model. Meanwhile, a 1:2 hydraulic model is established for validation experiments. The results show that, when the submerged entry nozzle (SEN) is eccentric in the mold, it results in serious bias flow, increasing the drift index in the mold up to 0.46 at the eccentric distance of 50 mm. The impact depth of liquid steel and turbulent kinetic energy can be decreased by increasing the rotation angle of the nozzle. The nozzle with one bottom hole, which significantly decreases the bottom pressure and turbulent kinetic energy, greatly weakens the scour on nozzle and surface fluctuation. In the eccentric casting condition, using the optimized swirling nozzle that employs a 5-fractional structure, in which the rotation angle of 4 side holes is 30° and there is one bottom outlet, can effectively restrain bias flow and reduce the drift index to 0.28, a decline of more than 39%.

The PAO Severstal continuous casting machine (CCM) casts square section 100´100 and 150´150 mm billets that after the gas cutting have average temperature 1000-1100 °С. Then billets CCM, transported to the section mill shop, should be placed into a tunnel thermos for preserving their sensible heat and temperature leveling along their section. In this case hot billets are loadedin the heating furnaces, and heating of the billets to required temperature before rolling can be accelerated several times, increasing capacity of the heating furnace and diminishing the specific fuel consumption. The authors present the mathematical model that allows evaluating the heat state of a square section billet on the technological line “CCM - thermos - heating furnace”. The results of numerical simulation of the billet heat state at optimal modes of heat treatment in the thermos and the heating furnace are given.

Purpose This investigation aims to analyze the steel-flux interface level fluctuation because of electromagnetic stirring and its process parameters in a continuous casting billet mold. Design/methodology/approach An un-coupled numerical model for electromagnetic field generation and a coupled numerical model of electromagnetic field and two-phase fluid flow have been developed. The two-phase fluid flow has been modeled using volume of fluid method, in which externally generated time-varying electromagnetic field is coupled and analyzed using magnetohydrodynamic method. Top surface standing wave stability criteria are used to study the criticality of interface stability. Findings Results show that application electromagnetic field for stirring increases the interface level fluctuation, specifically at the mold corners and near the submerged entry nozzle. The increase in current intensity and stirrer width barely affect the interface level. However, interface level fluctuation increases considerably with increase in frequency. Using stability criteria, it is found that at 20 Hz frequency, the ratio of height to wavelength of interface wave increases much above the critical value. The iso-surface of the interface level shows that at 20 Hz frequency, mold flux gets entrapped into the liquid steel. Practical implications The model may be used during optimization of in-mold electromagnetic stirrer to avoid mold flux entrapment and control the cast quality. Originality/value The study of mold level fluctuation in the presence of in-mold electromagnetic stirrer has rarely been reported. The criticality of stirrer process parameters on level fluctuation has not been yet reported. This study lacks in experimental validation; however, the findings will be much useful for the steelmakers to reduce the casting defects.

Resumo: Entende-se por modelagem de processo, o desenvolvimento de uma representação quantitativa ou qualitativa dos fenômenos físicos associados ao processo. Neste trabalho são realizadas simulações do processo twin roll de lingotamento contínuo de tiras de aços, utilizando como referência tecnológica o equipamento piloto instalado nas dependências do Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas do Estado de São Paulo. São construídos dois simuladores para o processo: um simulador da solidificação unidirecional, com molde refrigerado de aço e paredes laterais de material refratário, utilizando-se o aço inoxidável 304 como material de simulação; e variando-se as temperaturas de vazamento; e outro simulador a frio, com componentes feitos de acrílico, água como fluido de simulação e permanganato de potássio como corante. Um modelo matemático previamente desenvolvido é utilizado para confrontar perfis térmicos teóricos com perfis experimentais, para a determinação do coeficiente de transferência de calor metal/molde. O levantamento de valores de espaçamento dendrítico secundário é realizado nas amostras, além da observação simultânea das estruturas de solidificação, o que comprovou a eficiência do simulador em caracterizar o processo de solidificação do equipamento piloto. O uso do modelo frio permitiu a caracterização do posicionamento de barreira a 15 cm ou a 20 cm da lateral esquerda do distribuidor como a melhor configuração
Abstract: It can be understood by process modeling the development of a quantitative or qualitative representation of the physical phenomena associated to the process. In this work, simulations concerning the twin roll continuous caster of steels process at IPT (Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas do Estado de São Paulo) are performed. Two simulators were developed: (i) a simulator of unidirectional solidification with cooled steel mold and refractory lateral walls, by using a stainless steel as the reference metal (AISI 304), and varying superheat temperatures; (ii) a physical model, with components made of acrylic, water as the simulation fluid and potassium permanganate as a pigment. A previously developed mathematical model has been used to determine the metal/mold heat transfer coefficient by a method that compares experimenta1ltheoretical temperature curves. Measurement of secondary dendrite arm spacings is performed by microestructural examination of the samples, confirming the simulator efficiency in characterizing the solidification process in the pilot equipment. The use of the physical model has permitted to attain the best configuration for the tundish, by positioning the dam 15 cm or 20 cm from the left side of tundish

This thesis deals with modelling of continuous casting of steel. This process of steel manufacturing has achieved dominant position not only in the Czech Republic but also worldwide. The solved casted bar cross-section shape is circular, because it is rarely studied in academical works nowadays. First part of thesis focuses on creating numerical model of thermal field, using finite difference method with cylindrical coordinates. This model is then employed in optimization part, which represents control problem of abrupt step change of casting speed. The main goal is to find out, whether the computation of numerical model and optimization both can be parallelized using spatial decomposition. To achieve that, Progressive Hedging Algorithm from the field of stochastic optimization has been used.

The purpose of this study is to develop two mathematical models, which are based on a computational fluid dynamics technique, named SOLA, and the k-ε two-equation turbulence model, to analyze the fluid flow phenomena of molten steel in the ladle during the secondary refining process and the tundish operation in the continuous casting process of steel. The first mathematical model is used to analyze the fluid flow phenomena and the corresponding diffusion of the injected Ca-Si under various design and operating conditions to find the optimal Ca-Si injection position. The second mathematical model is used to analyze fluid flow phenomena and design the optimal flow control device during initial casting operation, steady state operation and ladle-interchange operation. Several physical models are also constructed in this study. Water model experiments are conducted to verify the accuracy and reliability of the mathematical models. Good agreements are observed between the simulations and measurements. As the mathematical model is verified to be a trustworthy tool, it is then applied to the actual operation to simulate the fluid flow; heat transfer and mass transfer phenomena of the secondary refining and continuous casting processes.   The flow pattern of two-phase flow in the stirred ladle for the secondary refining is simulated. The results show that the injection position of D, which has the coordinate of , has the shortest mixing time. The simulated results for the actual ladle operation show the similar trend to the water model. For the injection positions on the tuyere/circle center plane, the additives prematurely float to the top as the injection positions are near the plume zone. It helps the additives to transport to the bottom as the injection positions are away from the plume zone. The simulated results for the actual ladle operation show that the optimal positions for injection are located on the tuyere/circle-center plane, opposite side of the tuyere, and 0.5-0.8 r away from the circle center. For these injection positions, the mixing time is shorter and the flow pattern favors the transport of the additive to the bottom of the ladle.   The fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena of the molten steel in the tundish during its filling stage and subsequent initial casting operation are studied. The results show that the temperature field in LP-ND operation is not uniform Inclusion distribution and the extents of inclusion contamination among the outlets of the various strands in the tundish are also analyzed. The left half of tundish, inclusion contamination in the #2 strand is significantly more severe then that in the #1 strand. This is confirmed by the actual experience on the shop floor of that particular billet caster that the #2 strand experiences more difficulty in clogging problem during the initial casting operation than the #1 strand does. The LP-SD has no eddy near outlet strand and has more uniform temperature field. It shows that LP-SD lowers nozzle clogging and makes distribution of steel more uniform.   The fluid flow and mass transfer phenomena of the molten steel in the three different tundish caster during steady state are studied. Three tundish caster include A-shaped four strands billet tundish, twin strand billet tundish, and single strands slab tundish. In A-shaped four strands billet tundish, HP-SB reduces the difference of residence times between two strands, and makes distribution of steel more uniform. In twin strands billet tundish, the billet tundish with the HLPP design has the longest min-RT and it can inhibit turbulence as well as guide flow upward along slag/metal interface in the tundish. It is thus considered that HLPP arrangement is the optimal SEFCD design for twin strands billet tundish. In the single strand slab tundish, the result shows that the plain tundish has short circuit and the lowest inclusion removal ratio. The tundish with PP can reduce short circuit and has the highest inclusion removal ratio, even for inclusions, which is smaller than 50 μm. PP is the optimal SEFCD design for the single strand slab tundish.   The fluid flow and mass transfer phenomena of the molten steel in the tundish caster during ladle-change period are also studied. The results show that the weir and slanting dam reduce the velocity of steel and lower the chance for slag particles to flow into the outlet. WSLD40-F120 has the smallest number of slag particles to flow into the outlet and is considered the optimal flow control design in the T-shaped single strand slab tundish caster.

Résumé :
This paper describes the relation between the Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS), Area of Mushy Zone with the Continuous Casting variables in low carbon steels during the solidification process in the mold zone. A Finite Element analysis of the heat flow equation, coupled with the solute distribution model and the dendrite growth model, enables the determination of the Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS). The CONBCAST.FOR program is developed in this work to analyze effects of process variables on the Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS), Area of Mushy Zone and Volume of the Bleed. Effort is also made to find the optimum casting parameters. A new concept is introduced in this work to analyze the relation between the Area of Mushy Zone and Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS) with the Volume of the Bleed. Quantitative work is performed by collecting the square shaped billets at two different process conditions and determined the Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing and Volume of Bleed to analyze the relationship between SDAS, Area of Mushy zone and Volume of Bleed.
