Résumé :
This study is a survey from differences Universities of Cote d’ivoire, in order to understand the challenges facing by searchers during their scientific research. The study developed questionnaire consisting of five hypotheses, among diversities of challenges encountered by scientific searchers around the World. The choice of this five hypothesis is due to the differences characteristics such as the history of the nations and because Cote d’ivoire is less-developed country. This paper adopted a qualitative and quantitative analysis research strategy to examine the difficulties facing by searchers. This Work used two methods a semi –structured interview, and experimentation. Qualitative data has been collected through interview while quantitative data by experimentation. Our finding confirmed the difficulty encountered by the differences searchers at Universities or institutions searchers, or institutions searchers to achieve a fruitful outcomes research for its own interest or for participation in country development projects.

Résumé :
Thirty accessions of tomato including twenty eight introduced accessions from The World Vegetable Center-AVRDC and as controls, two commercial varieties Mongal and Calinago, were assessed for agronomic performances at the Experimentation and Production Station of Angud dou of the National Agronomic Research Centre (CNRA) located in the South of Cote d Ivoire. The trial was arranged in a randomized block with three replications. The following parameters were determined at vegetative development stage: plant height at flowering stage, susceptibility of accessions to diseases, day to 50% flowering and day of first harvest, production duration, fruit length, fruit diameter, total number of fruits, number of fruits per plant, potential yield, net yield and fruit damage rate. Results showed that the commercial variety Mongal, with a potential yield of 15.9 and a net yield of 13.1 t ha-1, was the most productive. All the introduced accessions from AVRDC recorded the lowest potential yields from 2.2 to 9.7 t ha-1, and net yields from 1.7 to 8.6 t ha-1. In addition, accessions WVCT8, FMTT847 and WVCT13 were severely infested by bacterial wilt. The reduction of the net yield of tomato accessions resulted in the high fruit damage rates. For the future tomato breeding work, it would be appropriate to introduce into the trials bacterial diseases tolerant varieties. Moreover, some studies could be undertaken to determine the nature of the bacteria involved in the plant wilting and to find out the causal agent of the tomato plants burning at the fructification stage reducing the harvest duration.

Résumé :
BackgroundMeasles still remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality among children in many developing countries, especially in refugee settings where fatality rates as high as 33% have been documented. From January to April 2004, concurrent measles and rubella outbreaks had occurred in four transit camps hosting 2,767 Liberian refugees in Cote d'Ivoire.ObjectiveThis study describes the epidemiology of concurrent measles and rubella outbreaks, and the investigation of a Disease Surveillance Team.MethodsPatients meeting the case-definition (rash and fever > 38°C) were detected actively. Blood sample were collected for measles and rubella IgM antibody confirmation.ResultsSixty rash and fever cases were identified. During weeks 8 to 13, measles IgM testing had resulted in 61.1% positive tests. The highest incidence (18.5%) was observed in children below 9 months. Ninety-three percent of children aged between 6 months and 12 years received a measles vaccination but the rash and fever cases continued to occur. This prompted a systematic test for both measles and rubella IgM antibodies. Rubella IgM testing had resulted in 74.0% positive tests. The highest incidence (3.88%) was found in children between 5–15 years. Supplemental immunization with a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine was conducted, following which, no fever and rash cases were documented.ConclusionsThis study indicates the importance of an early serological testing for measles and rubella together or the use of the MMR vaccine rather than only measles vaccine in disasters settings. Good management of surveillance data will be an asset for effective immunization strategies in refugee settings.

Résumé :
The aim of this study is to estimate the level of inefficiency and to identify the causes and consequences of Cote d’Ivoire public hospitals inefficiency. To that effect, we are using the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the double Bootstrap procedures to analyze the data. The analysis of data from the Ministry of Health in Cote d’Ivoire reveals that districts’ hospitals are not technically efficient. This situation has a negative impact on hospital output in the country. Thus, the health system is impacted by the inefficiency of districts’ hospitals in accommodating the demand of health care. That technical inefficiency remains dependent on environmental factors that constitute an impediment for some of the levers ((ratio of doctors per capita, malnutrition, average length of stay, geographical access, and correlation Tuberculosis / HIV) and others (number of doctors in medical staff) able to increase hospitals technical efficiency. The outcomes of this study reveal two main stakes: firstly, the need for improvement of hospitals productive efficiency and secondly, the need for a better planning and utilization of the resources allocated to the health sector. Providing adequate responses to these concerns is extremely important for the country’s ambition to establish a universal health insurance system and improve the quality of health care services.

Résumé :
Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows have been increasing in developing countries over the past decades. However, there is only a few evidence about their impact on the trade balance on the recipient countries. This study empirically examines the issue for Cote d’Ivoire from 1980 to 2017. To that end, we extend the traditional trade balance function to include FDI and employ alternative cointegration testing and estimation methods. The results show that domestic income, real effective exchange rate and foreign direct investment are important drivers of trade balance. A real depreciation of domestic currency improves the trade balance both in the long and short run, thus consistent with Marshall-Lerner condition. Furthermore, FDI adversely affects trade balance in the long run.

Moody, Daniel. « The gendarme of Africa : how can France's 2002 military intervention in Cote d' Ivoire be explained ? » Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20070.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
On 19 September 2002, dissatisfied soldiers in Côte d'Ivoire attempted to overthrow Laurent Gbagbo's regime. In response, France rapidly mobilised its military forces, once again intervening in one of its former colonies. This intervention is all the more surprising given the recent and important reforms in France's Africa policy; reforms which led to the increased disengagement of the French military in Africa. In light of this conundrum, this thesis seeks to understand why France pursued intervention in Côte d'Ivoire in 2002. Moreover, given these wide ranging reforms, I seek to understand the extent to which France's intervention in 2002, indeed, represents something new, or is simply another manifestation of France's traditional way of doing this in Africa. In answering these research questions, this thesis combines both quantitative analysis and an in-depth case study of French intervention in Côte d'Ivoire. In applying the results from the analysis to the case study, I find that the French intervention in Côte d'Ivoire is largely consistent with, and indeed indicative of, France's historical modus operandi in sub-Saharan Africa. In sum, I show how France has a plethora of important interests in the Côte d'Ivoire, interests which are shaped by its strong historical relationship with Côte d'Ivoire and which strongly influenced French intervention in 2002. Moreover, circumstances surrounding the 2002 failed coup attempt, notably the deteriorating situation in Côte d'Ivoire, the empowerment of Jacques Chirac and even the mistrust between Chirac and Gbagbo created the conditions which further fostered military interventions. These factors, it is shown, are largely consistent with the general trends of French intervention in sub- Saharan Africa, thus indicating that, despite important French reforms leading up to the 2002 intervention, very little has changed regarding French motives for intervention in sub-Saharan Africa. As such, the results from this thesis indicate that when one of France's important former African colonies is perceived to be under threat, France is bound by historical responsibility and a plethora of deep-seeded interests to deploy its military and attempt to remedy the situation.

An efficient energy conservation policy requires a good knowledge of consumption structure. The studies necessary for such a policy should not be limited only to energy use as is often the case in cote d'ivoire. It is indispensable that such studies be extended (as much as possible) to energy capital constituted by the physical structure. It is at this level, that the interface betwetween town and energy is fully evident. Energy accounting authorises this extension at a price irrespective of adaptation of the apparus and the proper elements in context of the studies. Applying this analysis method to the case of the administrative city in abidjan, we were able to verify that : - the technology options of urban operations have real effects on the function charges. - the articulation of the function and the role of different urban production actors determine to a large extent those choices. - the energy investment does not always nor necessarily increase in the inverse sense of energy function, but in some materials such as glass, the two consumtions increase and decrease together

Beyond essential hermeneutics of legal texts and the determination ofthe legislator's intentions, both well known methods of legal analysis, it remains to determine the social signification of ground law policies. Through ist choice of legal procedure, and modes of land apportionment between various economic sectors of activity, what type of society is ground law fashoining in the ivory coast and what are the limitations encountered by the restructuring ? The anthropology of law approach permits us to go beyond texts and legal practices to analyse the underlying assumptions that govern legal choices as an attempt to respond to the questions raised. Resistance from traditional systems of ground law which were at first disregarded and then deformed, and a variety of legal and sociological obstacles raise the problem of the responsibility of the state and its principal agents in the implementation of ground law policies and in the choice of capitalist development and its imbalances and inequalities. Legal and negotiated conflict resolution become deadlocked. Ground law reform has become urgent in the ivory coast. It must be founded on local ground law dynamics, ground law negotiation pratices, and the positive aspects of traditionalist systems of ground law

This chapter discusses the basic incentives that faculty, students, and administrators face, especially at so-called R1 (doctoral-granting with the highest research activity) universities. Different people have somewhat different motivations. Some are more driven by fame and prestige, some by money, some by intellectual curiosity, some by love, and others by a desire to push their ideology. Different institutions also structure their incentives somewhat differently. The university is a political environment where different groups and individuals compete for power and resources. Thus, it is not that the university is full of gremlins or beset by poltergeists, but that individual professors, students, and administrators face incentives that put them in conflict with the core values of the university.

Résumé :
This chapter introduces the authors' approach to university-community engagement as the process of collaborative learning among the young people engaged in afterschool activities run by University-Community Links (UC Links), along with the community and university people who have collectively engaged in designing, planning, and implementing those program activities. The prevalence of social displacement among community participants suggests a primary point for understanding the role that universities can play by engaging in the larger world. The chapter introduces the authors' ethnographic approach to the study of expansive learning among collaborating community and university partners as they confront dilemmas implicit in their engagement in joint activity and come to view their shared activity from an expanded perspective that transforms how they work together. The chapter then describes the historical emergence of UC Links, a California initiative that connects university and community partners in addressing pervasive social displacement and educational inequities.

Résumé :
In the last decades, the discourse about universities and their engagement with actors in their host regions has increased. Concepts such as the third mission and the entrepreneurial university aim to describe the engagement between the university and regional actors as a change in the role of the university. In theory, this is described as a transformation of the university. In practice, this is organised as an add-on of a range of different knowledge-transfer and market-oriented activities, which do not interfere with the core activities of teaching and research. These normative concepts have a significant influence on how universities are developing their regional engagement. In a case study from a university in Norway, University of Agder, the study shows a university that gradually is transforming from an ivory tower model towards more regional engagement. However, the transformation is taking time. At present, the university has a dual strategy for its regional engagement. One part is organised as an add-on activity, while the other is organised within the academic core of teaching. In the latter, students are co-creating knowledge together with regional actors. The study demonstrates that it is possible to organise regional engagement as co-creation of knowledge also within the academic core.

Résumé :
This chapter begins by arguing that universities and scholars have come under criticism for failing to address problems identified as relevant by their stakeholders—the general public—and there is a need to reclaim the civic mission of the university. This need arises as a result of our current inability to deal with “wicked problems.” The development of the modern university is then traced, arguing that while originally it was rooted in the “university as ivory tower” and then evolved into the “university as marketplace partner,” neither is adequate to meet contemporary needs. The university that is emerging—the “university as civic partner”—is described and its implications for scholarship explored. A case study is then presented as a means of illustrating the implicit ideas of this form of emerging scholarship and by reflecting on the case and its implication for how we understand scholarship. The challenges we face in transforming scholarship are then identified and discussed.

Résumé :
Considerations of the mortuary behavior at Sunghir concern principally the two elaborate graves, Graves 1 and 2. Although each exhibits patterns evident elsewhere in Mid Upper Paleolithic burials, the combinations of features and the richness of the two graves is truly exceptional. Yet there is additional evidence for mortuary behavior, principally associated with the Sunghir 5 cranium and for the burial above Grave 2 (here designated as Grave 2bis). The Sunghir graves have been described in detail by O.N. Bader (1998), and additional analyses of the associated materials have been done by White (1993, 1999) and Khlopachev (2006). Information on them is available from additional sources (e.g., Bader 1978; Soffer 1985; Abramova 1995; Bader and Bader 2000; Pettitt 2011), as well as from numerous short reports. Of these, the primary sources are those of O.N. Bader from the excavations and excavation analysis and of White and Khlopachev from analysis of the original material in the Vladimir District Regional Museum. The description here is an amalgamation of information from these and other sources. There are some inconsistencies between the different sources, and when possible they have been sorted out using the diagrams, and especially the discussion and in situ photographs, provided by O.N. Bader (1998). In the discussions of the graves and their contents, it should be kept in mind that many of the objects found in the graves and clearly associated with the human remains also occur in reasonable numbers in the cultural layer (cf. Bader 1978). This applies to the ochre, the several varieties of ivory beads, small stone pendants, animal figurines, tubular bones, pierced canines (arctic fox and wolf), and ivory spears (or fragments thereof). Additional decorative objects not found in the burials, such as shell beads and engravings, also derive from the cultural layer. It remains unclear whether these finds from the cultural layer were artifacts and aspects of body decoration that were common among the individuals at Sunghir (some of which happened to be preserved in abundance in the graves), whether their occurrence in the cultural layer is the result of pieces lost in the process of preparing the burials, whether the isolated pieces are from disturbed (unknown) burials, or whether (as suggested by Bader 1978) they come from discarded pieces of clothing.

Résumé :
This contribution aims at highlighting some key issues of the evolutionary process of universities, underlining in particular their role in promoting economic development and local communities. The recent shift in paradigm from the ivory tower to the entrepreneurial university has been dramatic and raises both consensus and criticism. This research proposes that this evolutionary process does not entail the emergence of one model of university, on the contrary, it entails the emergence of differentiated models. These possible models can be outlined along the two strategic dimensions of geographic orientation (local, global, glocal) and core activity (teaching, research, both). The glocal university addresses contemporarily the needs and opportunities provided by the local environment together with those deriving from the global one. They develop a two tier system of ties, both local and global, thus enhancing the exposure of the local society and economy to the influence of external knowledge. This contribution proposes a model where a more complex role of universities is highlighted and the “entrepreneurial and technological” paradigm — as suggested by the triple helix model — is complemented by a more comprehensive role, which portraits universities as catalyser of local development also in human and social sciences. Moreover, universities characterise — in some cases distinctively — the urban environment and landscape, thus activating tourists flows, generate a local “culture” not only in terms of goods but also of events and activities, of people and buzz and contribute to connect the local system to the global ones.

Résumé :
You may think of polymers as entirely manufactured and therefore unnatural, but they are often the chemists’ attempts to supplement and improve on the biological polymers that nature produces. Cotton, ivory, leather, linen, paper, rubber, silk, wood and wool are wonderful materials made from the biological polymers that plants and animals produce, and which have evolved to serve such useful ends as providing protective outer layers, insulation, reinforcement, weaponry and so on. Humans learned that with a little modification they could turn these polymers into quite useful articles, such as briefs and briefcases, condoms and tea cosies, tickets and toothpicks. Sometimes we want polymers with features that never evolved in nature, such as non-cracking insulation for electric cable, clothes that can be unpacked after a long voyage and still be without creases, or pans in which to fry eggs without them sticking. For these polymers we have had to look to chemists. Most of the portraits in this Gallery are of these kinds of polymers—materials that do not have natural equivalents. Polymers are rather special kinds of molecules consisting of long chains, usually made up of carbon atoms, to which other atoms, such as hydrogen, fluorine and chlorine, are attached. The older name for polymers is plastics, and you probably know several of them by name— polythene, polystyrene, Teflon, Orion—but these are only a few of the many that now play an important role in our lives. Whatever role polymers play, they cause many of us to adopt quite strong attitudes towards them. A few of us admire them, many of us ignore them, but a growing number despise them and a few abhor them and will avoid them at all costs. To a chemist, this opposition to polymers seems rather strange. By the time you come to the end of this exhibition I hope that visitors with strong views will have seen enough to persuade them to change their mind. Attitudes towards plastics have changed over the past half-century. In the 19305, when cellophane, PVC, polystyrene, Perspex and nylon were launched, plastics were welcomed.
