Résumé :
Thirty accessions of tomato including twenty eight introduced accessions from The World Vegetable Center-AVRDC and as controls, two commercial varieties Mongal and Calinago, were assessed for agronomic performances at the Experimentation and Production Station of Angud dou of the National Agronomic Research Centre (CNRA) located in the South of Cote d Ivoire. The trial was arranged in a randomized block with three replications. The following parameters were determined at vegetative development stage: plant height at flowering stage, susceptibility of accessions to diseases, day to 50% flowering and day of first harvest, production duration, fruit length, fruit diameter, total number of fruits, number of fruits per plant, potential yield, net yield and fruit damage rate. Results showed that the commercial variety Mongal, with a potential yield of 15.9 and a net yield of 13.1 t ha-1, was the most productive. All the introduced accessions from AVRDC recorded the lowest potential yields from 2.2 to 9.7 t ha-1, and net yields from 1.7 to 8.6 t ha-1. In addition, accessions WVCT8, FMTT847 and WVCT13 were severely infested by bacterial wilt. The reduction of the net yield of tomato accessions resulted in the high fruit damage rates. For the future tomato breeding work, it would be appropriate to introduce into the trials bacterial diseases tolerant varieties. Moreover, some studies could be undertaken to determine the nature of the bacteria involved in the plant wilting and to find out the causal agent of the tomato plants burning at the fructification stage reducing the harvest duration.

Résumé :
BackgroundMeasles still remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality among children in many developing countries, especially in refugee settings where fatality rates as high as 33% have been documented. From January to April 2004, concurrent measles and rubella outbreaks had occurred in four transit camps hosting 2,767 Liberian refugees in Cote d'Ivoire.ObjectiveThis study describes the epidemiology of concurrent measles and rubella outbreaks, and the investigation of a Disease Surveillance Team.MethodsPatients meeting the case-definition (rash and fever > 38°C) were detected actively. Blood sample were collected for measles and rubella IgM antibody confirmation.ResultsSixty rash and fever cases were identified. During weeks 8 to 13, measles IgM testing had resulted in 61.1% positive tests. The highest incidence (18.5%) was observed in children below 9 months. Ninety-three percent of children aged between 6 months and 12 years received a measles vaccination but the rash and fever cases continued to occur. This prompted a systematic test for both measles and rubella IgM antibodies. Rubella IgM testing had resulted in 74.0% positive tests. The highest incidence (3.88%) was found in children between 5–15 years. Supplemental immunization with a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine was conducted, following which, no fever and rash cases were documented.ConclusionsThis study indicates the importance of an early serological testing for measles and rubella together or the use of the MMR vaccine rather than only measles vaccine in disasters settings. Good management of surveillance data will be an asset for effective immunization strategies in refugee settings.

Résumé :
The aim of this study is to estimate the level of inefficiency and to identify the causes and consequences of Cote d’Ivoire public hospitals inefficiency. To that effect, we are using the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the double Bootstrap procedures to analyze the data. The analysis of data from the Ministry of Health in Cote d’Ivoire reveals that districts’ hospitals are not technically efficient. This situation has a negative impact on hospital output in the country. Thus, the health system is impacted by the inefficiency of districts’ hospitals in accommodating the demand of health care. That technical inefficiency remains dependent on environmental factors that constitute an impediment for some of the levers ((ratio of doctors per capita, malnutrition, average length of stay, geographical access, and correlation Tuberculosis / HIV) and others (number of doctors in medical staff) able to increase hospitals technical efficiency. The outcomes of this study reveal two main stakes: firstly, the need for improvement of hospitals productive efficiency and secondly, the need for a better planning and utilization of the resources allocated to the health sector. Providing adequate responses to these concerns is extremely important for the country’s ambition to establish a universal health insurance system and improve the quality of health care services.

Résumé :
Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows have been increasing in developing countries over the past decades. However, there is only a few evidence about their impact on the trade balance on the recipient countries. This study empirically examines the issue for Cote d’Ivoire from 1980 to 2017. To that end, we extend the traditional trade balance function to include FDI and employ alternative cointegration testing and estimation methods. The results show that domestic income, real effective exchange rate and foreign direct investment are important drivers of trade balance. A real depreciation of domestic currency improves the trade balance both in the long and short run, thus consistent with Marshall-Lerner condition. Furthermore, FDI adversely affects trade balance in the long run.

Résumé :
This study uses data collected by ENSEA within the framework of the Agricultural Sector Support Project in Côte d'Ivoire (PSAC) carried out in 2015 to measure, firstly, the financial availability, use and quality of financial inclusion of farmers in the rural region of Sud-Comoé of Côte d'Ivoire and, secondly, to examine the factors that influence their choices in terms of financial inclusion. To this end, we construct indices for each of the three dimensions (access, use and quality) and a synthetic financial inclusion index. The results of the univariate analysis reveal that farmers in the zone are poorly financially included in terms of the "use" and "quality" dimensions, and that the overall financial inclusion situation of farmers in the Sud-Comoé is low (33% of farmers are financially included). To achieve the second objective, we used a logit model. The empirical results indicate that farmers with no schooling and fewer qualifications are more likely to be financially excluded; that the high cost of banking services and the low income of farmers limit their financial inclusion and, finally, that the experience acquired by farmers on the farm and the savings products offered by financial institutions are the factors that stimulate the financial inclusion of farmers. In addition, the education variable partly explains why financial inclusion is more frequent among rubber tree farmers than among oil palm farmers. In view of these results, economic choices and decisions must be targeted according to these empirical findings to increase the level of financial inclusion of producers, the true pillars of the economy of Côte d’Ivoire.

Résumé :
This study strives to unravel the impact of leadership crisis and political instability in Africa with specific reference to the Gbagbo-Quattara leadership tussle in Cote d’Ivoire. The study relied on secondary sources of data and the post-behavioural theory as its theoretical framework. The study adopted the descriptive research method while data for the study were analysed using qualitative method and content analysis. It was observed that the Gbagbo-Quattara leadership crisis and several others in Africa are driven by personal interest and refusal to accept the result of the presidential election declared by Independent Electoral Commission of Cote d’Ivoire. Further findings from the study revealed that the pressure mounted by the African Union, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations contributed immensely to the early resolution of the leadership crisis in Cote d’Ivoire. To avoid leadership crisis and political instability in Africa, regional and international election observes should be deployed to monitor all elections across the world. In addition, regional and international organizations and agencies should also sanction citizens and leaders whose actions and conduct constitute a threat to peace and security at all levels.

Résumé :
Doubt about the quality of tap water, due to its color, taste and unpleasant odors, forces a large part of the population of the city of Daloa (west-central of Cote dIvoire) to turn to spring and traditional wells waters whose quality is unknown. This study aims to assess the level of nitrate pollution of these shallow aquifers through 29 points including 9 spring and 20 traditional wells spread all over the city. Nitrate concentrations range from 2.5 mg/L to 301.1 mg/L, with 30% of the wells containing an excess of nitrate, beyond the WHO drinking standard (50 mg/L). The map of levels of nitrate concentrations in the citys wells and springs shows the exposure of the populations of the old downtown neighborhoods to a high health risk due to the high pollution potential of nitrate in the water.

Résumé :
This paper tests the hypothesis of double deficit in Côte d'Ivoire in non-linear aid framework, using an autoregressive smooth transition model (STAR). The main results validate the hypothesis of double deficit in Côte d' Ivoire. The effect of current balance on budget balance is greater than budget balance on current balance. Moreover, the rapid effects of current account instability on fiscal balance reveal the lack of expectation by economic agents that leads to current account deterioration compared to the deterioration of budget balance. Thus, economic policies aimed at influencing the effect on current balance would be more effective than those aimed at the effect on budget balance. In other words, Ivorian economy adopts a Keynesian performance in the event of current account shocks and performance that tend to be more or less Ricardian in presence of fiscal policy shock.

Résumé :
The study was set to assess a complementary irrigation effect on seed cotton yields in the Northern Côte d’Ivoire where the cotton is the main cash crop. Firstly, the soil samples were collected from the surface down to 30 cm depth and analyzed. The soil was sandy and silty. So, 65 kg of 46%urea and 285 kg of NPKSB15-15-15-6-1 were applied for its correction. Secondly, in a complete randomized blocks, four tests were conducted, within those were T0 (no complementary irrigation and no crop protection products and fertilizers), T1 (no complementary irrigation, with crop protection products and fertilizers, the cotton cultivation ongoing practice in the Northern Cote d’Ivoire, therefore the reference), T2 (complementary irrigation, along with crop protection products and fertilizers), T3 (only complementary irrigation, without any crop protection products and fertilizers). Thirdly, the tests were replicated in 3 blocks. As a result, from T1 to T2, the plants heights, the plants density at harvest period, bolls number per plant and seed cotton yields were respectively 88.58±1.78 vs 96.08±1.78 cm (+8.47%) at day 73; 53,934±1,260.78 vs 67,593±1,260.78 plants per ha (+25.32%); 23.11±0.81 vs 26.39±0.81 bolls per plant (+14.19%) and 1,616.26±67.86 vs 2,657.77±67.86 kg/ha (+64.44%). Conversely, the complementary irrigation led to higher pest damages on bolls, because 13±2.2% of T2 bolls were attacked, while just 4.6±2.2% of T1 bolls were damaged by insects’ pest. Looking for solutions linked to climate change effects, a complementary irrigation in cotton farms in the Northern Côte d’Ivoire could be profitable to the cotton growers. Nonetheless, the farmers should pay a great attention to the pest management.

Résumé :
The aim of this paper is to determine the differences of fertility between HIV 1 infected and uninfected women in Abidjan, Cote d Ivoire, using data available in an observational study conducted in 1995 and 1996 in 2 antenatal care centres in the district of Yopougon, Abidjan, within an intervention programme to reduce mother to child HIV 1 transmission DITRAME project, ANRS 049 . Fertility indicators have been constructed from retrospective data on pregnancies and births, and univariate and multivariate analyses have been performed on these indicators and stratified by age groups to compare HIV 1 positive and HIV negative populations. The main outcome measures were the number of pregnancies, the number of miscarriages, the risk of miscarriage and the proportion of primigravida. Four thousand, three hundred and ninety six women agreed to HIV testing: 12.1 were found to be HIV 1 infected. HIV 1 positive women had significantly fewer pregnancies than HIV negatives in age groups 25-29 P =0.05 and 30-34 P =0.008 . The risk of having had at least one abortion or stillbirth was significantly higher for HIV 1 infected women than for HIV negatives OR=1.28, 95 CI: 1.02-1.60 , when controlling for social and demographic factors. This study suggests that HIV 1 infection has deleterious consequences on female fertility, with lower fertility rates and more frequent adverse pregnancy outcomes. Family planning and antenatal care services should consider antenatal HIV counselling and testing in women in areas of high HIV prevalence.

Résumé :
The geographic distribution of tungiasis is poorly understood, despite the frequent occurrence of the disease in marginalized populations of low socioeconomic status. To date, little work is available to define the geography of this neglected tropical disease (NTD). This exploratory study incorporated geostatistical modeling to map the suitability for tungiasis transmission in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In SSA, environmental suitability is predicted in 44 countries, including Angola, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Cote de Ivoire, Mali, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Gabon, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, and South Africa. In total, an estimated 668 million people live in suitable areas, 46% (304 million) of which reside in East Africa. These evidence-based maps provide vital evidence of the potential geographic extent in SSA. They will help to guide disease control programs, inform policymakers, and raise awareness at the global level. Likewise, these results will hopefully provide decisionmakers with the pertinent information necessary to lessen morbidity and mortality in communities located in environmentally suitable areas.

Saving is one of the preeminent integral of economic growth. The desideratum of this study is to investigate the determinants of national saving in four West African countries, namely, Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Cote d’ Ivoire. The study uses annual data from the World Bank database for the period 1997-2016. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test, Cumulative sum of residuals (CUSUM) test, and autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds test were used to examine the stationarity, stability, and cointegration of the variables respectively. ARDF model analysis was carried out to determine the short run and long run determinants of national saving in the studied countries. The long run results reveal that gross domestic product, per capita income and real interest rate has a statistically and significant positive effect on gross savings, were as age dependency ratio has a statistical, and insignificant negative relationship with gross saving. The short run results suggest that gross domestic product and per capita income possesses positive statistical significant effects on gross national savings. It is recommended that, in other to promote saving, growth and development, pragmatic and realistic economic policies should be formulated to strengthen all monetary and financial institutions in the respective countries.

Résumé :
Some biochemical parameters of juices from two red and yellow cashew apple varieties from three regions of Cote d Ivoire were analyzed. The parameters such as proteins, total soluble solids, total sugars, dry matters, and ashes had contents in juices ranging from 0.35 ± 0.01 % to 0.65 ± 0.02 %, 9.66 ± 0.28 % to 14.40 ± 0.10 %, 270.20 ± 5.15 g/L to 381.04 ± 9.86 g/L, 8.94 ± 0.02 % to 11.45 ± 0.43 % and 1.19 ± 0.01 % to 1.51 ± 0.03 % respectively. Besides, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicated that the region and variety had significant effects (P≤ 0.05) on these parameters. It so appeared significant differences (P≤ 0.05) between their contents. As for pH, these values varying from 4.00 ± 0.10 to 4.74 ± 0.10, differed meaningfully (P≤ 0.05) from one variety to another, whatever the region is. Otherwise, the results revealed that both red and yellow cashew apple varieties juices contained high rate of Tannins (1081.99 ± 34.64 - 2561.61 ± 95.11 mg/L), Flavonoids (223.83 ± 2.94 mg/L - 490.04 ± 5.32 mg/L) and total phenolic compounds (1587.59 ± 76.99 - 3043.03 ± 69.87 mg/L) whereas the carotenoid (0.97± 0.02 mg/mL -2.94 ± 0.02 mg/L) and Anthocyanin (6.57 ± 0.17 mg/L to 10.38 ± 0.15 mg/L) contents were found low. They also indicated yellow cashew apple variety juice didn't contain Anthocyanin content. Besides, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) showed that the region and variety main effect had significant effects (P 0.05) on these parameters. Thus, there were significant differences (P 0.05) between their rates. Furthermore, studies mineral elements (K, P, Mg, and Na) were only affected by improvement zone except to Na and they varied significantly (p 0.05). Red and yellow Cashew apple juices were the best sources of mineral elements and could be used in the diets of infants and young children. It was also rich in Vitamin C (210.61±5.01 mg/100mL and 403.73 ± 8.88 mg/100mL) and should be considered a potential supply source of adequate daily nutritional requirement for children and adults.

Résumé :
Poverty, health inequity, high cost of food prices, high electricity tariffs among other socioeconomic challenges are common futures of West African economies. This paper examined socioeconomic indicators of the West African economy between 1995 to 2019 using the profile and trend analytic approaches. The socioeconomic indicators examined are poverty head count ratio, under-5 mortality rate, government education expenditure as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), government health expenditure as a percentage of GDP, carbon dioxide(CO2) emission, electricity consumption (Kwh per capita), food production as a proxy for food security and real GDP. The selected West African countries include Mali, Benin, Cote d’ Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria following availability of data. Findings from the analysis revealed that the 15 West African economies are diverse across these dimensions of development. It further showed that with the exception of Nigeria (although, by far the largest economy in the region), the focused countries have performed averagely in relation to the socioeconomic indicators. Moreover, tepid economic growth (Real GDP) was observed for these countries as a result of lower commodity prices and impact of pandemics (Ebola and COVID-19), while income per capita ranged from $452 to $3,678) within the region. However, much gap is still existing towards achieving the related Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) and Targets. The policy implication of the findings inter alia is that sound socioeconomic policy framework at the regional level based on pro-development strategies is needed to improve the socioeconomic status of the West African countries for Agenda 2030 in line with the evidence from the paper. This agenda should not be divorced from structural transformation and enhanced regionalism and integration.
