Abstract At ∼9 km3, the six dacite domes (db1–db6) of Burney Mountain, northern California, USA, constitute the most voluminous Quaternary dome complex in the Cascades volcanic arc. Whole-rock geochemistry, electron microprobe, and petrographic data indicate that the domes are magmatically related, which when integrated with geomorphology and stratigraphic superposition, indicate early (db1, db2, and db3) and late (db4, db5, and db6) erupted groups. Abstract Shear-relative distributions of four types of precipitation/convection in tropical cyclones (TCs) are statistically analyzed using 14 years of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) data. The dataset of 1139 TRMM PR overpasses of tropical storms through category-2 hurricanes over global TC-prone basins is divided by future 24-h intensity change. It is found that increased and widespread shallow precipitation (defined as where the 20-dBZ radar echo height <6 km) around the storm center is a first sign of rapid intensification (RI) and could be used a

This study assessed the relationship between cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning and storm type on high-lightning days in Central Alabama during 2007 – 2011 with an emphasis on identifying which types of storms produce the most lightning. Five variables were used to classify high-lightning thunderstorms into 4 types. The storm types include: 1) spring linear events with high CG flash rates; 2) summer airmass events with a high percentage of area above 40 dBZ; 3) spring weak events representing several thunderstorm modes and; 4) summer Mesoscale Convective Systems with high flash rates and the highe

Introduction: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive hematopoietic malignancy in children and adolescents that is associated with high rates of treatment failure and early relapse. T-ALL patients frequently harbor NOTCH1 activating mutations as the driving oncogene in this disease. A multitude of strategies preventing NOTCH1 cleavage and activation, such as Gamma-secretase inhibitors (GSIs) have been developed. Despite promising pre-clinical data, the rapid development of Notch1 inhibitor resistance in early clinical trials, prevented the translation of these inhibitors into the

AbstractCumulus parameterizations in general circulation models (GCMs) frequently apply mass-flux schemes in their description of tropical convection. Mass flux constitutes the product of the fractional area covered by cumulus clouds in a model grid box and the vertical velocity within the cumulus clouds. The cumulus area fraction profiles can be derived from precipitating radar reflectivity volumes. However, the vertical velocities are difficult to observe, making the evaluation of mass-flux schemes difficult. In this paper, the authors develop and evaluate a parameterization of vertical velo
