Résumé :
Node deployment is a reflection of cost and performance in Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs). In this paper, we compared three different node deployment strategies, namely random deployment, grid deployment and tetrahedral deployment, on aspects of node number, end-to-end delay, localization accuracy, coverage and connectivity. Simulation shows that tetrahedral deployment strategy has the smallest localization error. As connectivity is to be ensured, coverage can be reduced depending on the ratio of r/s.

Résumé :
We present Any-Precision Deep Neural Networks (Any- Precision DNNs), which are trained with a new method that empowers learned DNNs to be flexible in any numerical precision during inference. The same model in runtime can be flexibly and directly set to different bit-width, by trun- cating the least significant bits, to support dynamic speed and accuracy trade-off. When all layers are set to low- bits, we show that the model achieved accuracy compara- ble to dedicated models trained at the same precision. This nice property facilitates flexible deployment of deep learn- ing models in real-worl

Onboard image analysis enables real-time autonomous capabilities for unmanned platforms including aerial, ground, and aquatic drones. Performing classification on embedded systems, rather than transmitting data, allows rapid perception and decision-making critical for time-sensitive applications such as search and rescue, hazardous environment exploration, and military operations. To fully capitalize on these systems’ potential, specialized deep learning solutions are needed that balance accuracy and computational efficiency for time-sensitive inference. Résumé :
Traffic congestion causes Americans to lose millions of hours and dollars each year. In fact, 1.9 billion gallons of fuel are wasted each year due to traffic congestion, and each hour stuck in traffic costs about $21 in wasted time and fuel. The traffic congestion can be caused by various factors, such as bottlenecks, traffic incidents, bad weather, work zones, poor traffic signal timing, and special events. One key step to addressing traffic congestion and identifying its root cause is an accurate prediction of traffic flow. Accurate traffic flow prediction is also important for the successfu

Résumé :
This US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, technical report details the pilot deployment, accuracy evaluation, and best practices of the citizen-science, coastal-image monitoring program CoastSnap. Despite the need for regular observational data, many coastlines are monitored infrequently due to cost and personnel, and this cell phone-image-based approach represents a new potential data source to districts in addition to providing an outreach opportunity for the public. Requiring minimal hardware and signage, the system is simple to install but re

Miniature natural gas sensors weighing a few hundred grams with 10 ppb s-1 sensitivity towards methane and ppb s-1 sensitivity towards methane and ethane present the energy industry with cost effective ways to improve safety, comply with State and Federal regulations, decrease natural gas emissions, and attribute natural gas indications to thermogenic or biogenic sources. One particularly promising implementation is on small unmanned aerial systems (sUASs) flown by service providers or in-house personnel or even more ambitiously as part of larger network conducting autonomous, continual monito

Résumé :
There are a significant number of new technologies aimed at combatting sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV)—primarily in the form of “emergency mobile apps”, but they are generally geographically and culturally limited, and under-studied. There are fewer applications of new technologies addressing conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), as regards prevention, monitoring, and early warning systems. Well established issues related to the under-reporting of SGBV also impact the accuracy of digital monitoring tools used in both conflict and non-conflict contexts. The use of digital tools to co

Résumé :
Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are increasingly used for a variety of applications related to INDOT’s mission including bridge inspection, traffic management, incident response, construction and roadway mapping. UAS have the potential to reduce costs and increase capabilities. Other state DOTs and transportation agencies have deployed UAS for an increasing number of applications due to technology advances that provide increased capabilities and lower costs, resulting from regulatory changes that simplified operations for small UAS under 55 pounds (aka, sUAS). Résumé :
This report discusses the potential uses of in-use vehicle data to generate aggregated data to calculate Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) and track safety performance of Automated Vehicles (AVs) throughout their deployment lifetime. The two primary benefits of collecting this data are to provide a feedback loop to AV Manufacturers and Operators to improve their safety performance as well as compare the safety of AVs more broadly against conventional driving and other transport modes. This work identifies a set of SPIs that can be recorded using in-vehicle data and other available data sets

Résumé :
State departments of transportation (DOTs) have traditionally utilized fixed road weather information sensors (RWIS) to improve road safety during inclement weather; enhance the management of labor, equipment, and materials for winter road maintenance; and reduce adverse environmental impacts from road maintenance activities. Despite the benefits of these fixed RWIS sites, their coverage and effectiveness are limited because of their stationary locations. To overcome these limitations, recent advances in mobile road weather information sensing technology and cellular communications have enable
